Everything about this place was good. Fast friendly service and the food was delicious. Some of the most flavorful meats we have had. Didn't even need the barbeque sauce. Great with sauce or without. Just left after eating at BBQ 65. First , we have eaten here for years and I have never left without being full or dissatisfied. This time I ordered 4 bone in ribs, Brunswick Stew , and Baked Beans. When I received my order the 4 ribs were the smallest I have seen. I would have gotten more meat on the pork sandwich. I let the lady behind the counter know about the small ribs. She said, sometimes they're small and sometimes large. The people behind the counter were not friendly The baked beans were good , but the Brunswick Stew had so much of a vinegary taste that I tossed it. My wife's veggie plate was excellent! For $29.98 you would think you would be full when you left the restaurant? The people behind the counter act like they do not want to be there. We won't be back. Fantastic find on our way back home from the beach! We were needing gas and wanted a quick and tasty non-chain lunch, this place was it! Soft and juicy piled high pulled pork sandwich with white sauce and marinated slaw on top, it was probably one of best pulled pork sandwiches I've ever had! This is ok barbecue. It doesn't deserve the ratings it is getting on Yelp though. It has about the same rating on Yelp as Hook's has in Troy. Hook's is far better. If the secret is in the sauce then there is not much secret. The sauce is not as good as the meat in my opinion. I will say that their fried green tomatoes were very good. They are probably (??) pre-breaded but I'm not sure. In any event they were cut thick and were piping hot when served. The potato salad was ok. I have had worse and I have had better. My dining companion had peas and she thought they were quite good. We got a smoked chicken to go and it was probably better than the barbecue as far as I am concerned. The white sauce---well I'm not a fan of white sauce. They have apparently started offering the sauce in containers and you add what you want after people complained. In summary, I would say it really did not belong in the Best of the Best list by the Ala. Tourism Dept for the "Barbecue Trail". On the other hand, there are not an abundance of choices on I-65. Maybe I will try the other barbecue places in the area. That they are rated lower is not encouraging. read more

I may get the Mac & cheese instead of the broccoli casserole next time but the squash casserole, ribs and pulled pork, out of this world. This place is right off the highway; that, and the decent reviews were enough to get us to stop. You order at the counter, and the woman was very helpful in explaining things, such as marinated coleslaw, which is a vinegar based slaw. I tried the 2 meat combo, ribs and chicken, with the slaw and baked beans as sides. The chicken was the only thing I liked, and the reason for the 3 stars. The ribs were not moist or tender, and had little smoke flavor. The marinated slaw was way too heavy on the onions and celery seed. The onion pieces were too large and had taken over the other flavors, as onion will do. The baked beans had onions that were crunchy, so essentially raw, in them too. I don't mind raw onion in manageable quantities, but this was overkill. The chicken was delicious; perfectly smoked and served with that Alabama staple, white sauce. Not sure I would return for the chicken alone, however, as the rest of what I ate deserves a one star review. read more

On a girl's trip to FL, and we wanted BBQ. This was the next closest place, so we pulled in. It is located adjacent to a Shell station, so we knew it would be good! BBQ 65 exceeded our already high expectations. Between the 4 of us, we had the ribs, pork, chicken, broccoli casserole, mac n cheese, tater tot casserole, marinated slaw, and cabbage and sausage. It was all excellent. The meat was perfectly seasoned and smoked, and even the chicken breast was juicy and flavorful. We cleaned our plates! Stopped by here today after reading other reviews. I can't begin to find the words to describe how amazing my chicken sandwich and Brunswick stew were. And I'm a BBQ connoisseur! Usually, I end up disappointed. Not today! It is definitely a hole in the wall type of place. When I told my husband it was a Shell station, he almost didn't stop. But the ladies working were super friendly and my husband and I were raving the entire time we were eating. If you get a sandwich pay the extra .50¢ for white sauce and slaw (the Cole slaw was amazing- but I'm sure the marinated slaw is great too). You'll be in BBQ heaven. I've been coming to The Smokehouse intermittently while traveling for close to 15 years. I loved stopping by on the way to New Orleans as a child and this was the first BBQ place that I loved. I haven't been in years and I stopped by with my boyfriend only to realize that it is now BBQ 65. I missed the cluttered, crowded atmosphere before, but that's personal taste. It is now clean and relatively spartan in decor. We ordered ribs, pulled pork, and a few sides. I like vinegar slaw, so I was happy to see that make an appearance. It was ok, not the best and not the worst. Tater salad tasted mostly of salt, but it wasn't overly dressed and the potatoes were fully cooked. Again, not good but not terrible. However, the barbecue was very disappointing, personally. The ribs were very tender, but they tasted as if they'd been steamed. There was no crust, no smoke taste, no burned crunchy bits that most love about barbecue. The pulled pork was also tender, but relatively mealy with no flavor. The only barbecue sauce offered is tomato-based and quite sweet, which I personally don't prefer. Overall, it seemed as though the new owners want to modernize the barbecue experience, but the funkiness and old school charm of Smokehouse, along with the great barbecue, is what made me come back. The food was not poorly cooked or inedible, but it tasted of a "barbecue meal" one might receive at an event catered in an area not known for barbecue. I will not be returning. read more

Wow! Glad I was checking Yelp for a good place get get lunch on our way back to Atlanta. The other reviews hit it spot on! Great BBQ pork and smoked chicken w/ white BBQ sauce. Buns toasted perfectly, portion sizes great and inline with the price. Some of the best Onion Rings I have had. Cole slaw was great and so was the Mac & cheese. This little BBQ places has the best southern sides I've probably eaten at a restaurant. Worth the stop! The only reason I didn't give it a perfect 5 is the location is inside of a shell station. The pulled pork was just okay. There was plenty of it and it was very tender and moist but lacked that intense smokey flavor I look for with good southern bbq. However, the sides saved the day! Sausage and Cabbage, Squash Casserole, Baked Beans, Mac and Cheese were all top shelf. The .50 up-charge to get jalapeno cornbread instead of toast on the bbq plate was a steal and the sweet tea really topped off the meal. Don't let the hole-in-the-wall location keep you from checking out another great bbq location. read more
