Ladies, don't lie - y'all know we all have 'em - a "whisker" or two... where we ain't supposed to. Or if you don't yet - well, just you wait, Miss Thang... To all my fuzzy wuzzy sisters out there - this is the review that is going to save you a ton of TIME and MONEY, and y'all owe me big for this one. So here goes ELECTROLYSIS 101: The Basics. After a year of plucking in my car mirror (oh my goodness girls, whateva u do - DON'T PLUCK! it makes them come back BLACKER and THICKER till you've got it goin' on like Poncho Villa) I just couldn't deal with my macho man prickles any longer. I tried out pretty much all the electrologists in town. Seriously, I shopped around 'cuz I'm on a budget and I don't have money to be throwing around. And since I didn't know too much about electrolysis, they all seemed pretty much the same, more or less. I'd get all these little red zits, and, unlike my money, the hair wasn't going a-n-y-w-h-e-r-e. I finally came to Be A New Creation Spa on the recommendation of a long time friend (of mine) and client (of theirs). Her exquisitely feminine chin and upper lip is smooth as a jar of honey, and had surreptitiously been the focus of my envy for quite a while before I wrangled her out of her little secret. Once there, I realized what was wrong with all those other places I'd been: they'd been zapping and then PLUCKING my dang hairs!!! See - it's like this, girls: killing a hair takes a lot of experience - the electrolygist has to slide this little tiny probe into the hair follicle and, basically, use her electrolygist's intuition to sense when it hits right where the root grows. Then she can deliver a little electrical zap and it kills the follicle so the hair doesn't grow back. Ever. Yessssssss! The problem is, it takes a super steady hand, a sharp eye, and YEARS to develop the intuition to know when you're in that follicle right where you're supposed to be. You can be too shallow and miss the bulb, or you can go too deep and pierce the skin. And you can only zap around in there so many times before the follicle gets all pissed off and develops a nice whitehead. That's when, if they haven't gotten it yet - they just PLUCK it out and move on. And what does PLUCKING do to our hairs, class? Of course they don't TELL you that they goofed it - they just say "ooooooh, darn, that one was stubborn!" and change the subject, while you're paying to make your chin even hairier than it was before. See how that works? This is the DIFFERENCE at Be A New Creation Spa, plain and simple. I've had appointments with hair removal gurus Roberta and Christine ... and one other talented lass, whose name escapes me at the moment... but the point is - THEY NEVER HAVE HAD TO PLUCK A SINGLE HAIR. Not one... single... one. Bottom line - I get my money's worth each and every time. It's simply a matter of talent and experience, and these ladies have well over a decade of it. To top it all off - I've spent more other places, but NEVER less!! And if you pre-pay for a package (really, it's the way to go) you can save a mint. My horrible little patch of hairs has become just a memory ...that I'll repress ...and in time, come to deny altogether... "ME...with a Poncho Villa 'stache??! Girl, you lie like a rug! Yup, they are true sisters, who know that peri-menapause just aint cool (literally -haha), and will strain their eyes and their backs so that you and I can feel like women again, instead of extras on Bonanza, or that guy from the Treasure of the Sierra Madres who goes, 'Badges? You can direct what gets done, and in what order, but they will give advice as needed to keep you from doing something really stupid. Or you can let them guide the whole thing with your input. Being the first place I've ever gone to for Electrolysis, I was rather scared about the whole process, pain and scars. But after a while talking with them and making decisions together, I was ready to proceed. Electrolysis is painful, and all you can do is control the pain. I took some ibuprofen as they suggested and that helped, but not so much at the upper lip. They have an agreement with the Dentist's office upstairs to give you a local anesthetic for the area which is really nice. Or you can buy Emla Cream (2.5% lidocaine 2.5% prilocaine) which requires a prescription (unless you find an overseas site that'll sell it to you without a prescription). All these things help manage the pain, but working with a warm, friendly, fun, loving and very-very-patient Certified Electrologist really helps. Your fears go away with these Gals!! And can you talk about anything! The time slips away on you when you are talking the whole time. It also helps focus your mind on the conversation instead of the pain. You just genuinely feel cared for at this place. Your fear is replaced with determination because your team is strong and you feel motivated as heck! The sessions feel faster each time I go. I really like this place and it's people! I hope they add another Electrologist to help with the workload because they are pretty busy, but now you know why - they are really good! I use this spa for their electrolysis service. I was really concerned about how they might treat me the first few times I went to them. Let me assure you, no matter who you are or where you wish to have hair removed, the three women who work here will treat you with respect and concern. All three of the women remove hair equally well, you just pick the personality you like best. They range from very out going and energetic to soft and relaxed. I like them all but personally for having hair burned out the soft and subtle helps me relax during the treatment. My first appointment with Roberta Smith at Be A New Creation Spa was on 7/30/2011. After doing some research on hair removal and looking into different businesses, a long-time, trusted friend put me in touch with her colleague who directed me to this fabulous place in Shoreline: I was promised great prices and effective, permanent hair removal. Well, Roberta delivered on both counts AND she gave me my life back. No kidding! For years, I was absolutely tormented on a daily basis by numerous course, wiry hairs on my chin. I was practically obsessed about these hairs and when I felt a new one cropping up, I had to resist the urge to run home and start plucking. Nevertheless, I used to spend countless hours sitting under a light with a magnifying mirror and a pair of tweezers going after those stubborn hairs! Thankfully, I've been pluck-free for the past 16 months. Roberta convinced me that plucking only made them worse. Plucking can actually distort the hair follicle making the delicate process of electrolysis much more difficult. The good news is that repeated electrolysis treatment can actually help straighten out follicles that have been distorted (either by curly hairs or the process of plucking) - and a straighter follicle means a more direct route to the root! At first, I was concerned that Roberta might miss some of my lighter hairs and only zap the darker ones. But, it didn't take me long to relax and just let her work her magic - she's the Whisker Whisperer! I don't know how she does it, but she manages to find even the light colored, course hairs. Her years of knowledge and experience have really paid off for me. Initially, I had monthly appointments that ended up going for more than an hour each time. After 6 months, I made appointments every other month - and at about 10 months, I realized Roberta needed less than an hour to get all of my course hairs. That just tells me there are fewer hairs growing back - so the process is really working! That is reason enough for my loyalty and gratitude to Roberta - but I also very much enjoy her company. When you're in a room with someone for an hour at a time (or more for some folks) you want it to be a pleasant experience. And, I can tell you that Roberta is soft spoken, kind and professional, but she's also a gifted story-teller with a great sense of humor! A Great Electrologist! I'm transgendered and began my mtf transition October 2008. My facial hair is a blend of dark, blond, and gray hair. For the dark, I decided to try laser reduction, for the rest, electrolysis. I asked all the transwomen I knew for a good electrologist in Seattle. The younger women, though, were using laser, the more mature women having completed electrolysis long ago. While I received several recommendations for laser, I got no help in my search for an electrologist. So I researched online. The paucity of consumer-client recommendations baffled me. I emailed a leader in my transgender support group. She recommended two electrologists, one south of Seattle, the other at a spa here in my Shoreline neighborhood - Be A New Creation. Armed with this recommendation, I surfed to the spa's website http://beanewcreation.com . Electrologist Roberta Smith's credentials impressed me. She's a Licensed Practical Nurse, a Certified Professional Electrologist, a member of the American Electrology Association, and Secretary of the Washington State Electrologists Association. Allure magazine recognized her as one of the best in the business. Seeking additional independent verification of her skills, I focused an online search on Roberta and discovered that several transgendered clients had posted recommendations for her. These recommendations on blogs and other independent websites seemed legitimate and sincere, so I decided to give Roberta a try. Roberta has been a godsend. It's sometimes hard to believe that I actually look forward to my visits with her. I'm certainly not masochistic - I generally run from pain - but Roberta is so technically proficient, and her personality so bubbly, that I forget she's repeatedly poking a needle in my face. An hour or two with her seems more a nice long visit with a good friend than an electrolysis appointment. What's more, we seem to be making good progress. I started at the end of October with just an hour of treatment a week, and for two weeks now have increased to two hours a week. Already, after just twelve hours of treatment, large areas of my face are clear. The redness following treatments is minimal. Roberta uses a blend of thermolysis and galvanic, and has been good at adjusting blend and power settings in accordance with my skin's sensitivity and tolerance to the treatments. Roberta could not possibly be more trans-friendly. One of her best friends is a transwoman, as is her accountant. Both are former clients who have completed transition, so it's probably safe to assume they were happy with their electrolysis. Roberta is not merely a great electrologist - she's a great human being - sweet, generous, compassionate. Nothing better illustrates her nature and character than what happened during my afternoon appointment with her Christmas Eve. I was her last client of the day. Just before she began my treatment, we discussed my first laser session, which I'd had nine days earlier with a doctor in another office. I told Roberta I was feeling depressed about the results. I had not realized how rough-looking and long-lasting the post-laser shedding process would be. I expressed doubts about continuing with the laser, telling Roberta I believed it more cost-effective to have her remove all my facial hair, both light and dark. Half the hair on my face being dark, I essentially was offering Roberta the chance to double her profit on me. If she had wanted, she could have easily firmed up the deal for herself, reinforcing what I already believed. Instead, she showed class and integrity, remarking, "Well - I think you should give laser a couple more tries before you give up. We've got enough gray to work with in the meantime, so when we're near finishing that, we can talk about clearing any dark that's left." I should point out, Roberta has no financial or business connection with the doctor giving me laser. What Roberta did next felt like "Gift of the Magi." Roberta double-checked her appointment book and told me she had a Christmas gift for me. She asked if I needed to be somewhere after my appointment. When I told her I didn't, she said she didn't either, not for a few hours. So, when my hour-long appointment was over, she kept working on me - two hours - three hours. At first, I thought she simply was continuing my electrolysis, but finally realized she had, at some point, stopped electrolysis and begun testing each and every dark hair on my face and neck with those little forceps she uses. She was removing all the shedding hairs that had been loosened by laser. Her Christmas gift proved magical. When I got home and looked in the mirror, the unsightly, rough-hewn dark stubble was all but gone. A sleeker feminine countenance looked back. I wept.
