A friend and I wanted to paddle board in Luquillo because it was close to our hotel. We had to do some research to get a hold of Beach Boys Paddle Boarding, but we were very happy with our experience. The owner, Ty, was very helpful and cared about our safety from the start. He kept in contact with us the day before and the day of while we were in Puerto Rico to let us know if it was safe to paddle board the river. Turns out that a woman had died recently while she was in one of the main rain forest artery rivers because of flooding from a rain storm. So, Ty wanted to make sure we would be safe from that risk.
We met Ty and his assistant "Capitan" at the entrance to the main Luquillo Public Beach and then followed him in our own rental car to the launch site. We had to walk for only 5 minutes to get to the river. Ty and "Capitan" carried the large paddle boards and we carried the paddles. Ty gave us instruction on paddleboarding and we were off. Along the way, Ty tried to get a feel for what we were interested in. I told him I loved the wildlife and so he continually looked for that along the way. In fact, he taught me about iguanas and had a pregnant female iguana hop aboard his paddle board and took a ride to the iguana nesting grounds further down the river! Very cool! He also pointed out rare Puerto Rican birds and Capitan cut down a bunch of coconuts for us to drink the juice while we played in the river and rested. The trip back was a bit harder because we were paddling against the wind. But, us petite girls made it just fine. Would do this trip again and definitely with Beach Boys Paddle Boarding! read more
