Went to Pacific Beach to hear a band on Saturday and wanted a place close by to stay overnight. Made a great decision in choosing Beach Haven. Check in went smoothly and put out stuff in the clean, comfortable room. Didn't need to drive, everything is just a few blocks away, yet it was so quiet that night, didn't hear any sounds. Got a good nights sleep in the comfortable bed. And spending some time in the hot tub Sunday morning before the 2 hour drive home was the chef's kiss on the weekend. Will be definitely be returning the next I head to San Diego, actually spent time figuring out how far it is from another concert I'd like to go to in May and found it's only about 7 miles away. The Bad: This property requires a $250.00 deposit per night for damages. My deposit wasn't returned to me until a week after checking out. It wasn't my bank's fault, as it kept being a pending charge for the entire week, until I called them on it. I did read in some Yelp reviews that some people did not secure their deposit back at all. I get that this property is in a party town, so they most likely have had tons of damages done to the rooms. However, even high-end Las Vegas hotels don't require anywhere near such a high fee. Perhaps because the property itself is so small, they feel the need to take it out on their patrons in the form of a hefty deposit. Beach Haven also has some of the snarkiest, most unwelcoming, rude and condescending staff. If you attempt to speak to manager Mickey, good luck with that. Speaking to her about anything will not yield any better results. She is even a worse example than the people below her that work the front desk. We had the only room outside the securely locked gate surrounding all other rooms. #115, which was adjacent to the city sidewalk. This made for a noisy situation until around 2:00am. I also considered #115 dangerous since the door locks were questionable as to whether or not they were actually locked at any given time. This is a security issue that needs to be taken care of. ALL other rooms in the small 2-story property were located securely inside. Those rooms surround a very small pool and both rooms and pool require a key card to access them. The Good: -The beach is right around the corner. -The hotel is clean and bug free. -The beds are comfortable. -Our room had a kitchen, which I did not ask for. (I don't think all of their guest rooms have a kitchen. I'm also not aware if I did or did not pay for a kitchen, because I got no positive feedback when I asked.) -The bathing area is large, but I had a problem with the shower. Beach Haven should consider upgrading their showers. Most standard showers in ANY hotel have hand-held shower sprayers and handicap rails. (Beach Haven has only one ADA room and the fact they told me that it's always booked and difficult to get should tell them something). -It's within walking distance to many restaurants, bars, a 7/11 and a Ralph's Grocery Store. I would not consider staying at Beach Haven again unless the current owners sell and replace their entire hospitality staff. read more

Stayed here for three days. They let us check in before 4( check in time) It's one bed room ( queen size bed) one full bathroom. And a pull out couch. Mini fridge and stove. My room had one pot and a toaster, knife plastic plates and bowels. Coffee. The things I didn't like is they don't have room service unless you stay certain amount of time ( think 6 days). With being 2 min walk to the beach. Sand gets all over. And no you don't have broom to sweep the floor yourself. Our toilets where not bulted to the foor.. ( still usable) just wables. Stayed here over Christmas for our vacation in San Diego. The room was clean enough, a good size for our family of four, and the pool/hot tub area was nice. I felt that the front desk staff was not overly friendly, but the service level was correct for the type of hotel it is. The price was right at around $200/night, given that fancier hotels in San Diego cost alot more per night. I do also like that it felt safe, with having to use your room keycard to even get into the area where the rooms are (motel style - enter from outside). The location is great, and it is located on a cute street with lots of restaurants and only one block from the beach. There were some changes that I would suggest. They did not tidy/refresh your room each day and I was expecting that for $200/night. Also, the bathroom was really musty. The floor always seemed to be somewhat wet and we went through alot of towels because of that. They did replace your towels no problem if you did go to the front desk. Overall between at 3.5 and 4 star for me. read more

CHOOSE ELSEWHERE. I gave this hotel 2 stars because the location is truly exceptional, but that is literally it. If location is ALL you care about, you'll be fine; but if anything else matters about a stay, avoid this place. First the good: The rooms are cute (enough), the location is exceptional, and the pool and hot tub were quite clean. The day shift staff were very nice and friendly; the evening staff exactly the opposite. BUT: Everything else was kind of awful, frankly. We stayed for a week, so we rented a space with a kitchenette. Most of the places we have rented here with kitchenettes have full size refridgerators; this place has the same mini-fridge you find in your standard hotel room WITHOUT a kitchen. The worst part, however, was that in said kitchen we were provided with 2 paper plates, two paper bowls, a few paper cups, and those plastic packages of utensils you get from fast-food takeout. That was IT! We asked the front desk, and were told "that's all we provide" (very rude!). So off we went to Walmart to buy decent plastic bowls, plates, cups, and actual, you know, real silverware. Not remotely acceptable for a place that bills itself as having "kitchens". The bed was not comfortable at all. Not the worst I've ever slept on, but definitely sub-standard. The floors are carpeted, and not particularly clean. The shower is a bit rusty, and there is NO WATER PRESSURE. It's the kind of shower that you have to stand still for five minutes just to get your hair wet. Finally, the walls are paper thin and the place is very loud. We were lucky it was a very slow time, so this wasn't so bad, but other reviews have talked about how AWFUL it is when the place is busy. TO SUM IT UP: The photos on the website look great, and the location really is awesome, but overall it is NOT worth staying here. We will never come back. We visit San Diego twice a year, and this is truly the poorest place we have ever stayed. There are many other places in Pacific Beach with much better service and amenities, and around the same price. Pay a little more to have a MUCH better stay. Wow, after reading other's reviews, I can't believe anyone would book a stay here. Where do I begin, first and foremost, the staff, they are so rude, and they don't know how the TV's work. The cords were rearranged by the last guest, and not put back correctly for us, so we had to ask the front office girl for help, she managed after some time, to get the cords correct, but that should have been rectified before we checked in. Our room #115 had a kitchenette, the worst equipped kitchen ever. They should tell you on booking what it's like, so you can pack dishes, cups, silverware, etc. what we got were plastic utencils wrapped in plastic with a tiny napkin and a little packet of salt and pepper, something you get at Smart and Final. Styrofoam cups for coffee. One pan, not pots. 4 paper plates and 4 paper bowls. The refrigerator is so tiny, and rusted. Everything was the bare minimum, toilet paper, and towels. The beds were very uncomfortable, the lounge chairs around the pool again, very uncomfortable, you had a bar running along your lower back, terrible. The only good thing about this place is the location, but you have to walk a few blocks and down a long ramp, down the cliff, to get to the beach. The parking is ridiculous, very narrow, and you had to maneuver around cars, and curbs to pull in to a space. We were never told that there was a $250 deposit for staying there, that was a huge surprise upon checking in, also we were told it was $15 for parking per day, but upon checking in, it was $20, and trying to discuss anything with the staff is a joke. This is one of the worst places we have ever stayed from beginning to end. First impression is everything and the lady that works in the front office should never be allowed around people. Period. Her attitude and facial expressions are quite the opposite of welcoming and friendly. Check in is at 4pm. We called and asked for an early check in and she was a little snippy and said it was $35 extra to check in. Never in my life have I been charged to check in early. But ok. When we arrived at 4pm there was a sign on the door saying that they stepped out and would be back soon. We waited 15 minutes until the front office girl came in, opened the door, and with a scrunched up face with a look of disgust said "can I help you, with something". The way she said it was VERY off putting. My sister lives two blocks away and we did not rent a car since we knew we would be borrowing hers. We told the front lady that and she said we couldn't register that car for our room. But our room comes with parking. So how in the world does that make any sense. We explained that to her, and she very flustered said "oh fine, since we aren't busy I will allow it". Very rude. When you check in they give you a full typed page of rules that you have to sign. Again, never in my life have I had to do this. And it wasn't just one signature. You have to initial EVERY SINGLE RULE. little excessive? One signature couldn't work?!? My sister has a service dog and she got yelled at saying animals are not allowed on property. Which is fine she wasn't staying here. But she went to walk us to our room and the front office lady about bit her head off. The rooms were sub par and dirty. There was a used soap bar in the bathroom, a stain on the floor, dusty, not very clean. They do not have maid service for your room unless you specifically request it. I think you might have to pay for it. There are no dogs allowed but there is a noisy dog right outside our window. LOUD construction on property started at 7:45 AM and woke up our 2 year old. So that was SUPER cool. we are only able to sleep in on vacation due to our schedules and work life. But I guess we can just sleep in on our next vacation next year. DO NOT STAY HERE. All the reviews are right. For 300 dollars a night, here is the positive. The room is sufficient. It is clean "enough". There were hairs in the shower but whatever I guess. For the most part it was clean enough. Here is the worst part- the attitude and bullshit we had to deal with upon check in. My boyfriend was exhausted, I had my credit card on my phone, and he had all of his physical credit cards with him. We wanted to pay and move on with our lives, but they ridiculed us and condescended us for not having my physical card. And they said there was nothing we could do and their attitude was abhorrent. They weren't even nice about it or trying to help us out, they just looked as us with disgust. Eventually someone else came and reluctantly tried to make it work, probably because *ahem* we are GIVING THEM MONEY and we are a customer. I never leave bad reviews, but this place needs a reality check. I am constantly advertising to others about places I love, but I will actively tell everyone in my life to stay away from this place. Brother stayed here with his friends. They liked it. It's modern inside and clean. The beach is super close, you can walk to it. Also you can walk to the pier. Everything is close by like restaurants and etc. There's even scooters outside if you need them to rent. Parking was easy. The fridge wasn't that great. The freezer was good. This is the worst hotel I have ever been it. It is less than a 1 star hotel. Parking is a problem. I had to park on the road. The room was next to the road. I got the room with a kitchen. When walking into the room, the first thing we noticed was a very bad smell. There was mold in the vent and the kitchen walls. The fridge did not stay shut, not working and was rusty. The stove was rusted. The plated provided were 2 thin paper plates and 2 styrofoam bowls. No cups or glasses. The bathroom was dirty and the faucet was wriggling back and forth. There were spiders and bugs in the room. Very dirty. Do not stay here. We booked for 5 nights. We did not want to stay the 1st night but the clerk left soon as we checked in after 10pm. We slept in the car, and asked for a refund the next morning when they opened. The manager said they had to charge me for 1 night. I disputed, because the clerk left before we even got into the room to check it out. We had to find another hotel for the rest of the stay. I really wanted to give this place another chance considering its so close to the beach but, it was a bad experience again... My boyfriend and I found this place a few years ago and were hoping to make it our go to hotel as we visit PB every year. Our first experience wasn't bad so we decided to book again the following year. This time we wanted to travel with our dog who is elderly. Our dog is also my boyfriend's registered service animal. We called prior to booking to confirm it was ok for him to stay with us. I also called the day before our trip and again we were told it's no issue. The day we arrived we checked in, unpacked and walked down to the beach. After a few hours, our dog was worn out due to his age. He is 16 yrs old and cant be as active as he use to. We took him back to the hotel to let him rest/sleep while we went back to the beach for another hour. As we were walking back we received a call from the front desk girl who very rudely told us our dog cant be alone in the room or else we would be charged $250 fine EACH time he was alone. We were so thrown off guard by the attitude and sudden change of rules. We were then told we had to wait for the owner to drive to the hotel to make a decision. After waiting 45 min for her to arrive she blamed us for "not understanding their policy". We had no choice but, to repack up everything and find another hotel. The front desk also made distasteful comments saying things like "good luck no hotel will allow it". We called the hotel literally next door Diamond Head Inn and were told it's no issue. We stayed at diamond head the rest of the time and had no problems. Their rooms were also nicer and cheaper. Beach haven could have cared less that they ruined our first vacation day and blamed us. Fast forward to current day. A few of my girlfriends and I planned a trip to PB. Beach Haven was brought up as a place to stay and even though I swore I would never come back due to my last experience...I decided to not make it a big deal since we would not be bringing an animal. Us girls arrived on 5/30 and our stay has been once again less than. We were treated poorly by the front desk girl who again was rude for no reason. The same day we arrived we got a call 30 min after being on the beach by the front girl telling us her cleaning lady "saw our weed" and we would be fined $250 if the room smells like weed or if we smoke in room. (Their policy is you are allowed to have weed in the room just not use it in the room) The said "weed" they were talking about was a gram that was in a sealed jar. It was also put away in a cabinet that has a sliding door that shuts. When we got back to the room it was taken out and put on the counter indicating the cleaner went through our belongings...I walked to the front office to discuss the situation to which I was informed by the same front desk girl who called us saying "She had to call us because the cleaner reported it". I assured her that no one was or will be smoking in the room and also confirmed we were allowed to have the weed in the room as long as we were not smoking on the property. Additionally, I let her know it made us uneasy that her cleaner would go that length to "find" said weed and report it when it was put away and did not smell at all. The front desk girl just replied she would let the manager know. Not even 15 min after I got back to our room the same front desk girl called our room to not only tell us the same thing for the 3rd time but, also changed her story and said that actually she herself went in our room before the cleaner did to "ensure it was ok for the cleaner to enter" and that she also saw our weed sitting out before the cleaner even reported....like huh? Lol this made no sense. Not only was she calling us liars but, also if she saw it way before the cleaner..why didn't she contact us right then? It was all very odd and off putting. Seems like they try and find any reason to charge you a "$250 fine". My friends and I have not caused any issues while here yet we got harassed by the front desk for nothing... None of us want to ever come back again. Needless to say book at another hotel nearby. There are way better options for lower price and way friendly/professional staff. read more

While staying here for the past few years I have truly enjoyed my stay. But I must say with deep sadness that they have let me down this year. I would like to just highlight the few things that ruffled my feathers while staying here, because if I was to go on a long rant this would turn from a short yelp review to a 3 page essay. I left both keys in my room and ran back to Beach Haven at 10 PM at night on New Year's Eve and happen to find someone still working and they let me in my room to get my keys. They were a lifesaver. The customer service at this hotel is top-notch. I mean New Year's Eve 10 PM at night I know that's early to some, but a lot of places close early for New Year's ,and they were more than happy to help me. Excellent beach getaway! If you are looking to stay within a short walking distance to the ocean and want a clean, cute, beach stay- Beach Haven is the place! We rented the one bedroom with a living room and kitchen. It was perfect for 3 of us! We walked to the ocean within 5 minutes, it's a half a block away. Felt safe here. People had their doors open, towels hanging out to dry on fence near rooms. Front desk gal was extremely kind and helpful. Maintenance and cleaning personnel care about the guests experience as well. I have never had a problem with a hotel but this hotel is the definition of thinking a refresh coat of paint on not the best facility; putting that nicely. Facility looks nice but TV kept struggling to work, wall mounts literally fell off the wall, bed is really hard. The walls are so thin and the 9pm-9am quite time wasn't enforced at all. At 3 am the first night and 1 am the 2nd night a bunch of drunk people were right outside our room running in and out of the gate and banging on the wall next to our front door. When safe was informed after the 1st night they said "It was outside we can't do anything about it (it was right next to our room door....)we will inform the manager" nothing was done and same thing happened 2nd night. Hubby booked 2 nights online for our 10 year wedding anniversary. We were looking forward to a quiet and relaxed vacation away from our young children. Pro's: location, free parking, kitchenette, shower water pressure. Con's: older building with thin walls, we were on ground floor with very loud neighbors above us, could here their conversations and everywhere they walked. For some reason they decided to run their garbage disposal for 5 minutes straight at 7:15am...which resulted in an alarming thunderously loud jack hammering vibration sound in our bathroom, clanging thru the shower pipes. Kiss sleeping in goodbye . Master bedroom headboard is under a window that faces courtyard so u can hear everyone walking by right above your head while you are trying to sleep. This is NOT a hotel to escape to if you want to relax in your room, or sleep past 6am. Pool was heated but in the shade most of the day (april), so not warm enough to enjoy. We slipped into the hot tub a couple times warm up. No full length mirror. Only 1 towel bar for your towels AND wet swimsuits, bar barely fit one towel. Rooms have an updated look...but building is old, don't expect a boutique version of a W hotel, more like an IKEA motel. Our room had two windows that faced the courtyard/pool and walkway; and the other two windows an alley/parking lot...so if you are into voyeurism this may be the hotel for you. Service was non-existent. Agent that checked us in had the personality of a wall, did nothing but the bare minimum and read the hotel's policies and handed us our keys. We definitely overpaid for this place, not worth more than $125/night. Biggest value is the parking. read more

I've stayed here before and came back for the convenience. San Diego is a special place to me. My mother passed from suicide a few years back and her ashes are on this beach.. she specifically asked me in a letter before leaving us. I decided to take her old dog/my new service dog here, a 10 lb Chihuahua. My service dog is in his last year and we drove 6 hours from Arizona. We planned staying Thursday - Monday. First thing Friday morning, after take him to the bathroom, I went to go run to the store and the front office called and told us he would need to be with us every second. Prior to coming I called and went over that I was bringing my service dog and they never told me this policy. If so, I would have made other arrangements. They are now telling us we need to be out by 11am and it's 10:20am currently. We are now stuck in California on the beach with no hospitality and need to figure out a whole new plan. The GM told us no hotels will allow an animal being present, and we called a hotel right next to here that allows animals for $45z Horrible place to vacation. The basic human decency and empathy of this place is a 0/1 - 10. I would never recommend this place to anyone after this, honestly heartbreaking. DO NOT WASTE YOUR FUN FILLED VACATION HERE. Located just a block from Pacific Beach, Beach Haven Inn is a treasure in a bustling area of activity. I'm almost afraid to post a review because I want it all for myself. But...here goes. Beach Haven Inn is a delightful, family friendly inn. I'm led to believe that all the rooms are slightly different and unique. We were located on the single story side, right next to the pool. Actually all rooms are right off the pool. The inn had recently had some rooms remodeled and the front office was being finished when we checked out. We were in a double bed room. The room was spacious, super clean, had hip black and white surfing art, and cool desk and chair. The beds sat on platforms and were really comfortable, with ample pillows. There was free wifi, air conditioning, and cable tv. The bathroom looked newly remodeled with a gorgeous sink and counter, & pebble shower. There was no towel hanger, hook, or rod...which made general towel drying or beachwear drying troublesome. I think that should be something they address. I worried about parking, which seems limited. But parking was never an issue for us, as we came and went daily. We had a Beach Haven Inn parking pass and there seems to be plenty of parking along the street. We were fortunate to be parked outside our room window each time, which I liked. The staff was incredible...just superb! Pat, the wonderful lady who checked us in and out, made great recommendations for food and fun. She also remembered our names as we came and went...days later! That's excellent customer service. Beach Haven Inn is also in walking distance to a number of restaurants, stores, and coffee shops. The night life is pretty cool if you venture down a couple of blocks. If I had any criticism, aside from the lack of towel hooks or hangers, it would be the walls seem very thin. We didn't notice the first night, but as the room next to us got a guest the next night, we could hear every single thing he said or did (belches, phone calls, you name it). He could have been a loud talker, but we could hear everything nonetheless. I never, never heard traffic noise...just my loud neighbor. Would this deter me from staying here again and ever time I visit San Diego? Not at all. It's not five star luxury, but it's really a gem...so please don't stay here! What a great find! Only one baby block to the beach, this small hotel (less than 25 rooms) is perfect if you want to see Pacific Beach on a budget. There are parking spaces too, for one car per room, which is great for a place so close to the beach. Their rates are very reasonable, but I recommend booking in advance (at least 2 months) because it does fill up quickly, especially the less expensive rooms. Room rates range from about $120 for a two queen standard to around $300 for a suite with kitchen. Rates vary with season though. We stayed in a two queen standard room. The bed was pretty comfortable and the pillows were fluffy. The bathroom needed a remodel, but it was clean. Cant say enough good things about this hotel. It is literally half a block from the beach. 15 minutes away from la jolla cove. 20 minutes to old town San Diego. Location is great. Lots of bars and restaurants near by. Ralphs is down the street. Great pool and jacuzzi. The hotel room was so clean. Gave us a lot of extra towels which is a plus when you travel with a family. Big screen tv 100 plus channels. Nice working ac. Great customer service. Front desk was great. Free parking onsite. Will be coming here again next year!!!! read more

My stay here was beyond disappointing. The hospitality here is extremely unfriendly, unprofessional, and not accommodating. The only redeeming quality was the location relative to the beach. I tried checking in early (2:45) when standard check in time is (4:00) and they charged me $25. never in my years of travel have I had to pay a fee to check in an hour early...not to mention Danielle at the front desk did not appreciate us asking and could care less about quality customer service. Also, don't bother calling the emergency number posted on the door. When I called to replace my key and asked for help getting in she said to me "I'll be there when I get there." Come to find out she was in one of the upstairs rooms on the property. The overall experience here was awful and I do not recommend coming here if you plan on enjoying your vacation. read more

I enjoyed my two-night stay at Beach Haven! It's close to the beach and was easy walking distance from great eateries and shops. We didn't have a problem with parking at all. Our room had two queen beds. We really liked coming back from the beach and showering in hot water. I get why people say its just an motel - but I'd say this is just as equivalent to staying at a chain hotel. I really liked the decor and vibe there too. Definitely keeping this place in mind for future SD trips! read more

All we can say is this place is just OK. Good location, 2 min walk from the beach. I don't think any of the rooms had a beach view since there are a few buildings in between. Good restaurants and everything around but this place was just okay. Beds were nice and clean. The bathroom was ok, kinda small and the light and fan turn on with the same switch so that's a little annoying when you just have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night and the loud fan turns on with the light. Water pressure was alright. My husband had a harder time washing his hair since the pressure was kinda low. The dark blue paint on the back splash area in the bathroom wasn't even fully painted there were spots all over it. Overall for the price, you're paying for the location. I think next time we come to SD we'll stay somewhere cheaper and a little bit further from the beach. read more

Independently owned, not a big chain. We love this place, perfect for families! We have a super clean 1 bedroom suite, mini kitchen. Couch in the LR is a super comfy fold out. Centrally located, we can walk to all the restaurants, a block away from the beach, free parking space w/ room. It's not a super fancy chain, but we love the Mom & Pop businesses! read more

Great place to stay! 2 minute walk to the beach and amazing service. The staff were awesome and definitely go out of their way to make sure the customers have a good stay. The ice machine was broken, so they had bags of ice to provide to us and when we arrived early, they allowed an early check in. The room was nice, and had a small kitchenette equipped with silverware, dishes, and even pots and pans for cooking on the stovetop. The hotel is a very short walk from the bars and restaurants, but far enough away to be in a quieter area. We did not use the pool or hot tub, but it appeared clean and well maintained. The couch in the room has a pull out bed, and the TV had many channels so we could catch the NFL games. I highly recommend this place and I definitely plan to go back! read more
