I stayed at this hotel and eaten at this hotel restaurant before several time. Customer service is okay, the hotel room wasn't clean and smelled bad. It felt like I was staying in a Motel 6 vibes. Even though it was very pricing to stay here. For a hotel that's basically closest to the water, you would think they take care of the property. I'm not sure who the guest service or hotel property manager but this hotel need a major renovation and cleaning. As someone who lives close to La Jolla, I expect better for the prices I pay.

We had a perfect stay here. First, we found a spot in the underground garage, checked in quickly, and received a room with a great view of the ocean. This place is a little older with some kind of noisy air conditioning units, but none of that bothered us. The location is great and having almost like your own beach area is awesome. We will definitely stay here again!

My family and I took a walk to the beach this morning and decided to pop in for some quick breakfast. The dining area was very nice and clean. Service was fast as well. I can't speak for the rest of the menu, but the breakfast left a lot to be desired. I got the two egg special with sunny side up eggs, bacon, toast, and home fries. The bacon was charred and cold. The home fries were under seasoned. It's not the worst hotel breakfast I've had, but I'm sure there are better and cheaper spots nearby.

The room carpets need to be replaced or aggressively steamed.

Hotel claims to be a 5-star but is really a 3-star with a great location. Rooms are outdated, dirty old carpet (that turned our baby's legs and feet black!), musty smell, loud AC window units, bad pillows, small TV, bathroom from the 80s. It was like a beachside Motel 6. If you aren't too picky it's fine, but at $350ish a night I expect carpets that are at least regularly shampooed. On the plus side, all staff are kind and attentive. Housekeepers do their best with what they have to work with. The restaurant has decent food. The bar is excellent, great cocktails. And the hotel reimbursed some $$ after my MIL spoke to a manager about room conditions.

This hotel is the only beachfront hotel in La Jolla. Perfect location and the view is amazing. They also have a pool and jacuzzi. Reasons for the 3 stars: The hotel is dated which is fine, but the elevators have a bad old urine odor, the old ac's are loud and the showers may need new filters as the water pressure can be improved. The view from the restaurant is unmatched, however, the food is not worth it. Eat elsewhere and come back for drinks and the magnificent view of the sunsets.

This is a wonder location right on the beach! You can sit outside and gaze into the ocean for hours. There's plenty of water activities to take part in as well. The hotel is a bit dated and my bathroom had a few big bugs in it. The AC machine also needed a new filter so it barely worked. The staff is very nice and helpful. Larry who drive the hotel shuttle service is a gem!! He's super knowledgeable and friendly. This hotel is also walking distance to plenty of other restaurants to enjoy. La Jolla is a very cute place in which to take walks.

TLDR: This was not a great place to stay in general. It had great views and friendly front desk staff but the rooms were not great and the hotel is noisy and old. La Jolla Shores was one of the hotels we stayed at during our recent San Diego trip. We booked LJS off of the recommendations we got on a Facebook group, and the photos and reviews seemed good. We booked 2 rooms, one with a partial ocean view and 2 queens, and a king oceanfront. First off, this hotel is in a very beautiful and safe location. It is easily accessible for an Uber to drop us off from the hotel. There is a slight fishy smell in the area where the hotel is located from the sea lions. I personally love the smell but you can smell it in the water a bit and through the air conditioning in this area. The front desk staff was nice but quite clueless. The rooms were ready when we arrived. On first impression, the hotel is definitely dated. There was some construction going on, but the facilities are old and showing age. The elevators have an absolutely horrible odor and paint/stairs are chipping. The ice machine was broken and the area around it was flooded with melted ice. The pool is smaller and full of screaming kids and their drunk parents. These kids and their parents were screaming until 11pm that night. The Queen Room appeared clean and was visually fine, but it had a horrific musty odor. Within 10 minutes we found that the AC unit was coated in black mold (see video below). We had to leave that room immediately as we had a headache and didn't want our belongings to pick up the smell. Luckily, the King room did not have this odor. We stayed here for the night and got the Queen room refunded. The room was definitely showing age but it was cute. The ocean view was stunning. The bathroom was very old, so was the carpet, and the AC was rattling and leaking Freon all over the wood patio. We enjoyed La Jolla Shores beach a lot. It was easily accessible from the hotel and it was crowded but very nice. Do note that you will hear screaming kids as the walls at the hotel are thin. We did end up eating at the Shores Restaurant, which I reviewed separately. (Our verdict was: great service & ambiance of the beach, but mediocre & overpriced food). We only stayed one night, because the hotel is old, noisy, and not worth the price of staying the full stay. The staff was nice enough to refund us for the other 2 nights after we showed them the videos of the mold.

Beach balcony view from the room.

As a San Diego native, my husband, one year old, and I really enjoyed our staycation here. It is literally steps from the beach, service was AMAZING, staff were friendly and helpful. They even put up an umbrella and beach chairs out for us for the day. It was honestly one of our best vacations we have ever been on. It was so serene waking up and falling asleep to the gentle lapping of the waves crashing on the beach. HIGHLY recommend!

(review for my recent stay on the week of July 21st) My fiancé and I stumbled upon the La Jolla Shores Hotel during an impromptu trip to La Jolla just a month ago (back in June), and it immediately captured our hearts. The charm of this coastal gem was undeniable, and we knew we had to return. So, when my fiancé's birthday approached, we couldn't think of a better place to celebrate. From the moment we booked the stay, the Guest Services team went above and beyond to make our stay extraordinary. Their warmth and attention to detail truly embodied the spirit of hospitality. Every interaction felt personal, and it was clear that the staff takes great pride in creating memorable experiences for their guests. The breathtaking views, the relaxed yet refined ambiance, and the exceptional service all contributed to a birthday celebration we won't soon forget. La Jolla Shores Hotel has quickly become one of our favorite retreats, and we're already looking forward to our next visit. To the wonderful team - thank you for making our stay so special. We'll be back very soon.

Right next to the hotel, kids play area and scuba diving !

Review of La Valencia Hotel…read more I purchased a day pass here as someone who works in the hospitality industry and is always curious to experience new properties from a guest perspective--and La Valencia absolutely delivered. I arrived pretty early in the morning (optimistically expecting sunshine), but even with the typical coastal overcast, it didn't take away from the experience at all. In fact, I somehow ended up with the pool almost entirely to myself--in the middle of August, which felt like a hidden luxury. The setting is just beautiful. The views, the calm atmosphere, and the overall sense of escape made it easy to settle in and relax. I spent about five hours there and never felt rushed or overlooked. The staff, especially at the cabana bar, were fantastic--attentive, respectful, and genuinely pleasant to interact with. I ordered food and drinks throughout the day, and everything added to the ease and enjoyment of the experience. The only small downside is parking, which can be a bit tricky--but that's pretty standard for La Jolla. Overall, this was an incredible day experience and absolutely worth it. I'd do it again without hesitation.

Multiple social media searches told me this was the place to stay in La Jolla, so despite the…read moreexpense I decided to book a room for one night, my first night after flying into San Diego. I paid $500 for the room, arrived around 10 pm and had to check out by 11am, quick $500! There was a $45 resort fee, whatever that means. Still would love to know what that was for. Anyways, the bellhop guys were nice they gave me recommendations for where to eat and also helped carry my suitcase up to my room. The bedroom was small, really small and the view was of a back lot with dumpsters and the side of a building. Sure, the room was hip and funky and cool. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was small but functional. Listen the room was fine, but for $500...and this was a heavily discounted room because I booked through Hotel Tonight. Anyways, I walked the hotel at night and it was nice because I had the place to myself, the pool is really pretty at night, it's lit up, I recommend walking outside and having a seat on their comfy couches above the pool. In the morning I continued exploring the hotel and when I went to check out the dining room I was receiving unfriendly glances from the hostess or whoever she was. So much so that I stopped and asked if it was okay that I was looking around, to which she replied, "Well are you eating?" I said no and that I was staying here and just wanted to check out the view. I am a pretty average looking chick, was in work out clothes, maybe I didn't fit the high end clientele look and it seemed to bother her. Anyways, the people at the front desk upon check out weren't the friendliest either, seemed annoyed when I asked if they had change for the bellhop. The man at the concierge desk who I believe has a job of making sure everyone in the hotel is happy and having a grand time didn't even acknowledge. me the four or five times I walked past his desk. I felt unwelcome to be honest.

Absolutely would not stay here again…read more We stayed one night at the Empress Hotel in La Jolla on Valentine's Day, paying over $460/night, and the experience was bad considering this was not "exceptional service." Parking is in a public garage across the street. You pay $25 through an app and use a QR code to enter/exit. The scanner repeatedly failed. We had to get out of the car multiple times on a steep underground incline just to get the gate to open. We kept showing the QR code on our phones and nothing. We tried again and again. This would take 5 minutes every item trying to enter and exit. Finally it would respond. And the people in front of us and behind had the same problem Around 9 PM on a Saturday night (Valentine's Day) the garage gates were closed. The hotel staff should've warned us that parking closes early around here. Several hotel guests were standing outside with us , frustrated and confused. We called and the hotel told us to use an alternate entrance on another street. Once inside there was no way to find your car. You're on a different level having entered in a completely different side and at night. It took 17 minutes walking level to level to find our car. My husband is a Type 1 diabetic, so this stress and exertion became very stressful since his blood sugar started to drop. The microwave in our room also died mid-use, and the hotel had no replacement, which is odd since being familiar with hotel hospitality, they usually have back up coffee maker, microwaves, clocks, etc. We were in the area to visit our kid in college not for VD. We got frozen dinners at pavilions to have meal in our room since restaurants were booked. We had to heat our dinners upstairs in the breakfast area. Breakfast the next morning was awful -- mushy powdered eggs (they melted in your mouth like hot mush), strange bacon, warm milk, and soggy potatoes. Management offered a $17 adjustment, which does not cover the $25 parking fee. This dismissive and insulting given the extent of the all the things that went wrong. The front desk staff Hayley and Josh were friendly and professional. Not worth the price. We won't return.

The hotel has a charming, older vibe, but it's well maintained and fits the beachy, Balinese-inspired theme perfectly. Our room came with an above-average kitchen setup, which made it easy to prep snacks and simple meals during our stay. Free water bottles in the lobby were a nice touch, and the complimentary breakfast (7:30-10:30 a.m.) was way better than your standard hotel spread, fresh, even the bacon was crispy but not over cooked, tasty, and filling. It's just a short walk to the beach, the kid-friendly "children's pool" area, and of course, the famous La Jolla seals. Be warned: La Jolla has its fair share of hills, so if you're bringing a stroller, be ready for a bit of a workout. The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful, even offering a golf cart service on a first-come, first-served basis for late-night rides back to the hotel, which was a nice touch. Our room was nice, but not exactly what we expected. We had requested a king ocean-view room--the view was absolutely amazing--but the bed was definitely closer to a queen size. The construction is bothersome but I was never bothered by the sounds. Progress comes with inconveniences so it didn't bother me personally. Here's why I lowered the rating. The elevator is HORRIBLE. Something should be done in the massive renovation and it was completely unreliable. Especially, since there's only one carrying luggage down the stairwells is risky at best. The brand new lighting in the bathroom was a big fail! The lights are mounted behind the mirror and my wife could barely see because it's so dim. I'm incredibly thankful I did because she responded admitting that she had booked our reservation for the wrong dates. I was shocked. We had booked our room block nearly a year in advance and had confirmed everything multiple times. Because of that mistake, my husband no longer had the suite we had reserved for him and his groomsmen to get ready in. Instead, they were placed in a much smaller room with construction directly outside. The getting-ready photos we had envisioned--and paid for a professional photographer to capture--were completely different because of an error that was not ours. What disappointed me most was the response. Rather than making every effort to fix the situation or offering a comparable solution, it felt like we were simply told, "This is what you get." As a bride, that was heartbreaking. On the morning of my wedding, I also had to spend time dealing with hotel issues instead of simply enjoying one of the most important days of my life. No bride should have to experience that. To make matters worse, after our stay my husband paid for one of our rooms, yet another charge for that same room was later processed, leaving us trying to resolve a duplicate charge after our wedding. After returning home, I found other reviews describing similar experiences involving room block mistakes and communication issues. Reading those reviews made me realize our experience may not have been an isolated incident, which was incredibly disappointing. I want to be clear that Wedgewood Weddings was absolutely incredible. Our wedding itself was beautiful, and their staff made our day special. If you're getting married in La Jolla, I highly recommend Wedgewood. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about La Jolla Cove Suites. If you're trusting a hotel with your wedding weekend, I would strongly encourage you to consider staying elsewhere. A wedding weekend is something you'll never get back, and ours was overshadowed by avoidable mistakes and unnecessary stress.

We had a weekend getaway planned and ended up at The Shoal La Jolla Beach. The highlight was the…read moreroom we reserved. The hotel itself feels like a nicely renovated Travelodge--which it actually is--but the room made all the difference. We chose what felt like a rooftop addition: a single top-floor suite with a large private, semi-wraparound deck. It was genuinely impressive, and we loved it. The young gentleman who checked us in was charming and friendly, and we were glad to arrive. Our room was clean, and the view from the top was excellent, even with a slight obstruction. One of my least favorite post-pandemic trends is how many hotels have adopted the "reduced service" approach, which often reads as "we can't be bothered." When you're paying hundreds of dollars a night, basic service shouldn't be a negotiation. The Shoal did mention this policy upfront. The next morning, on our way out, I stopped by the front desk to keep things simple for housekeeping. We only needed two things: replacement pumps for the broken shower product dispensers (two of them), and the bed made. Straightforward. They did replace the pumps, and we appreciated that. But they didn't bother making the bed. Oddly, they did clean the bathroom and replace towels--something we didn't ask for. When a guest makes a basic request, why is it missed? Policy? Forgetfulness? Inefficiency? Hard to say. The hotel's location is excellent--about two miles from the village in a mostly residential area. There's a charming little gourmet market down the street and several restaurants within walking distance. The beach is just steps away. Even with the on-and-off rain, we genuinely enjoyed our La Jolla weekend. The food scene in this town is strong. Do a little research, because there are some fantastic restaurants packed into this small, very appealing area.

My husband and I came to San Diego for a quick getaway and saw this hotel on Priceline. I googled…read morethis hotel and saw there was a better deal online so we booked it through their website. We checked in and the lady at the front desk was super friendly and helpful. However, our room was a lot smaller than I had expected. If cars are passing by, you'll hear it from the room, which made it hard for me to sleep. Also, there was a lady saying that her laptop was stolen and called the police. On the upside, it is pretty convenient to walk to downtown La Jolla and is very close to the ocean. Parking is also easy! Overall, I would probably pick somewhere quieter if we were returning to La Jolla, but other than that, not a bad price for what you're getting!
