The views are lovely, the rooms quite comfortable, but: There's a mini fridge with no microwave; there's no trash receptacle near the "kitchen;" and most annoying-- the hotel doesn't provide cleaning services unless you remind them, 2 or 3 times. So we go out around 10 to enjoy Sea World or the Zoo, and we go out to lunch, and we just want to rest in our room before going swimming and we get back around 3. No one has been in the room. We call, and they apologize and no one shows up. We call again around 4, and at around 4:30 the room gets cleaned. Not once, not twice, but four times in our one week vacation. It's a 1st world problem and maybe I'm just a Karen, but I didn't like that. read more

I stayed at this hotel and eaten at this hotel restaurant before several time. Customer service is okay, the hotel room wasn't clean and smelled bad. It felt like I was staying in a Motel 6 vibes. Even though it was very pricing to stay here. For a hotel that's basically closest to the water, you would think they take care of the property. I'm not sure who the guest service or hotel property manager but this hotel need a major renovation and cleaning. Overall we had fun, the structure itself is old and definitely needs some upgrading however very clean, location is spectacular. They do have alot of kids running the place which means you get the bro, and people standing around talking crap about other patrons. We checked in Friday very minimal staff, fire pits didn't work in the restraunt nor the garden which was frustrating because no one was around to fix. Saturday more staff available, better experience. House cleaning came every day. Private beach was very clean. For $650 a night i would have paid just for the location. The air conditioning location in the room made it difficult to sleep if your sharing a bed because it was blowing in my daughter's face. The parking fee of $45 every night is feel is really unreasonable due to it was so crowded due to the holiday weekend we didn't use our car in fear of not coming back to an empty space. So we still had to Uber everywhere on top of the fee. I feel like there should be no fee or a $25 fee but 45 a night to just let your car sit in felt was unreasonable. read more

I had a similar experience to another yelper regarding a room situation. I booked through a third party and I wonder if that's why? We checked into a king room and immediately had to leave. The room had a thick musty smell of mold and mildew. We had to step on the balcony just to breathe. The front desk moved us into a room down the hall that had two queens as that was the last room available for the night. Thankfully this room did not have the same smell and we were able to stay. Had we not moved rooms, I would have to leave and stay somewhere else. The rooms are in need of a deep clean but the location is great. We had a great experience during our stay. Yes the hotel is older and could use some updates... definitely needs more outlets in the room. But it has a comfortable beach atmosphere so slightly outdated furniture and carpet fits the vibe. Our room and the common areas were all very clean. Friendly staff with an easy check in and check out. Sparkling pool and ideal beach access. Free beach umbrellas, chairs, boogie boards and towels. Plenty of seating in the courtyard with fire tables and games. Tables in the back facing the beach are the perfect place for morning coffee. Very family friendly with happy kids enjoying the outdoor corn hole and ping pong. The location is great and the views can't be beat. Yes you have to pay for parking which nobody loves but there were lots of spaces. There was visible security and I always felt safe. I didn't want to leave and I can't wait to come back. read more

We spent over $28,000 at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club for a three-night family celebration, including eight rooms and a private event, and the experience was extremely disappointing. Several rooms were in poor condition, and one room facing the parking lot had a serious pest problem, including cockroaches and spiders. The bathroom was outdated, worn down, and far below what anyone should expect from a property charging premium rates. Frankly, it felt more like a budget motel than a luxury beachfront resort. We also spent over $5,000 on a private dinner event and were never informed that the event would need to end by 8:45 PM so staff could begin putting away tables and chairs. Had we known in advance, we would have planned accordingly. To make matters worse, after already paying more than $24,000, we were presented with an additional charge of approximately $7,000 with little explanation. After requesting an itemized bill for each room, we were refunded $6,000. The beach location is beautiful, but that alone does not justify the prices being charged. Between the poor room conditions, pest issues, lack of communication, and unexpected charges, this experience fell far short of expectations and did not come close to delivering the level of quality advertised. I would not stay here again and cannot recommend it for special events, family gatherings, or anyone expecting a luxury resort experience. If you're thinking about staying at La Jolla Shores Hotel, I would strongly encourage you to consider other options. This was actually our second disappointing experience here. What makes it even more heartbreaking is that we got married at this hotel. After our first stay, management reached out to apologize for all the issues we experienced. They told us that if we ever came back, they wanted to "roll out the red carpet" for us and make sure we had an amazing experience. When I booked this stay, their idea of "rolling out the red carpet" was offering us a 20% discount on our room and assuring us they would make sure this visit was everything the last one wasn't. As part of that promise, they also offered to have something special waiting in our room for my husband's birthday. We booked this staycation to celebrate his birthday, genuinely believing this visit would be different. I also requested early check-in and late checkout. Unfortunately, early check-in never happened. When we finally got to our room, there was absolutely nothing waiting for my husband. No birthday card. No dessert. No bottle of wine. Nothing. They had completely forgotten about the very gesture they had offered as part of making this stay special. Later that evening, I checked my bank account and noticed the hotel had charged us for our room multiple times, along with several other unauthorized charges that had been processed multiple times as well. When I brought it to the staff's attention, they weren't sure why it had happened and couldn't explain the duplicate or unauthorized charges. At that point, I had enough. I went to the front desk and told them I wanted to pack up and leave and receive a full refund. They apologized once again for "dropping the ball" and said they would process refunds for the unauthorized charges, but that it could take up to 10 days for the funds to be returned to my account. They then offered us our room at 50% off. I explained that if they truly wanted to make things right, they should comp our room for the night considering everything that had gone wrong. They told me the best they could do was 50% off and that they would send a sweet treat up to our room. By that point, I was already past it. They had already "dropped the ball." A birthday surprise isn't something that should happen only after a guest has to complain. It should have been done from the beginning--especially after promising to "roll out the red carpet" and make this stay a memorable one. Ultimately, on my husband's birthday, we packed our bags and left the hotel. That was never how we envisioned celebrating his birthday, especially at a place that holds so many special memories for us. Instead of leaving with another happy memory, we left feeling disappointed, frustrated, and let down. To make matters even more disappointing, the manager I had been communicating with throughout the entire week leading up to our stay never reached out to us afterward. Considering everything that happened, I expected at least a follow-up phone call or email. That never happened. While I was sitting in the lobby waiting for the assistant manager to get off the phone with her manager, another guest walked up to the front desk with a complaint of their own. I overheard the employee apologize and say she was sorry for the "miscommunication." After everything we had experienced, it made me realize this wasn't simply a matter of miscommunication. From my perspective, it was a pattern of employees not following through on the commitments they made to their guests. For the price of this hotel, and considering the sentimental connection we have to it because we got married there, this experience was incredibly disappointing. The customer service and communication throughout our stay fell far below what we expected, especially after being promised such a different experience. To make matters worse, several front desk interactions felt dismissive and unfriendly. The only employee who truly made us feel welcome during our stay was the bellman, who was kind, professional, and deserving of recognition. I rarely leave negative reviews, but after two disappointing experiences, I can honestly say I won't be returning. It's heartbreaking because this hotel will always hold a special place in our hearts as the place where we got married. I sincerely hope management follows through on the promises they make to guests and improves the level of customer service and communication so that no one else leaves feeling as disappointed as we did. read more

My family and I took a walk to the beach this morning and decided to pop in for some quick breakfast. The dining area was very nice and clean. Service was fast as well. I can't speak for the rest of the menu, but the breakfast left a lot to be desired. I got the two egg special with sunny side up eggs, bacon, toast, and home fries. The bacon was charred and cold. The home fries were under seasoned. It's not the worst hotel breakfast I've had, but I'm sure there are better and cheaper spots nearby. read more

We had an incredible stay at La Jolla Shores Hotel and can't say enough good things about our experience. The location is absolutely beautiful, and the view from our room patio overlooking the beach was a highlight of our trip. The rooms--and the entire hotel--were spotless. It's clear the staff takes great pride in keeping everything clean and well maintained. We really enjoyed the pool and spa area, which had plenty of lounge chairs and shaded spots to relax. The courtyard was another favorite, with foosball, ping-pong, and other games that kept everyone entertained throughout the day. The fire pits located around the property were such a nice touch, especially in the evenings. The restaurant right on the sand was a stunning setting, complete with fire pits and heaters. The food was delicious, and the views made it even better. What truly stood out was the service--everyone we encountered went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. The location is also very convenient, with easy access to nearby shops, restaurants, coffee spots, ice cream, and rentals. The underground parking with direct access was super convenient, and the beach concierge (who sets up umbrellas and chairs) plus available boogie boards made beach time effortless. Hotel claims to be a 5-star but is really a 3-star with a great location. Rooms are outdated, dirty old carpet (that turned our baby's legs and feet black!), musty smell, loud AC window units, bad pillows, small TV, bathroom from the 80s. It was like a beachside Motel 6. If you aren't too picky it's fine, but at $350ish a night I expect carpets that are at least regularly shampooed. On the plus side, all staff are kind and attentive. Housekeepers do their best with what they have to work with. The restaurant has decent food. The bar is excellent, great cocktails. And the hotel reimbursed some $$ after my MIL spoke to a manager about room conditions. read more

At that point i was just being patient.I called the hotel a week later when still nothing had been updated and the man i spoke with at the front desk ABSOLUTELY ASSURED me that the mail was sent. Well here we are a few weeks later and tracking for all 6 envelopes i gave the front desk to send show no update at all and i'm getting messages from people saying they never received anything. so a couple days ago I called the hotel again as one last shot, even though i'm 99% sure they lost them. the lady i spoke with at the front desk ASSURED ME she would look into it and update me later. well it's been days since she said she'd call me back so i'm assuming she forgot or just didn't care enough to actually help and my letters remain laying around the hotel on a desk somewhere. but honestly now i'm starting to think the guy i gave the letters to stole the contents, after feeling the envelopes i handed to him. dumb me didn't get his name, and dumb me didn't go straight to the post office like i usually do so here we are. If anyone working there actually cares to help... the guy i gave my envelopes to was a larger dude working the front desk, darker hair/skin, and had black frames for his glasses iirc. and handed them to him on Sunday 8/24 at ~approx 8pm. still all 6 envelopes have no tracking update whatsoever, no one will get back to me or give me any kind of update at the hotel (except for lying to me that they were sent which i have tracking info that says they were NOT), and the hotel hasn't and has made no indication that they will take any responsibility for this issue they created. i'm frustrated, disappointed, even a bit angry now. with basically no help from any employee there's nothing i can do from here except never give them my business again. as 30+ year long annual customers, my family is very sad we had a bad experience and won't be returning, but we will not give our $$ and family vacation time to an unethical and unhelpful place like the la jolla shores. if u still choose to stay here, whatever you do, make sure it doesn't require you to trust the front desk. they are either unethical, which is what i'm leaning towards after all my interactions to date, or incompetent and cant take 6 envelopes from point a to point b without losing them. i'll own my mistake of trusting the front desk was competent and/or trustworthy which will be the last time i ever do that, but shame on all of you employees at la jolla shores for not helping me at all, instead lying about knowing the letters were sent because i have proof they were not, and not helping or getting back to me after i called and u told me id have an update by the end of day. just so so so disappointed. yeah sure losing the contents of the letters hurts my pocketbook a little, but losing a vacation place our family loved because they did this and won't help me one bit, despite repeated requests, hurts more. read more

This is a wonder location right on the beach! You can sit outside and gaze into the ocean for hours. There's plenty of water activities to take part in as well. The hotel is a bit dated and my bathroom had a few big bugs in it. The AC machine also needed a new filter so it barely worked. The staff is very nice and helpful. Larry who drive the hotel shuttle service is a gem!! He's super knowledgeable and friendly. This hotel is also walking distance to plenty of other restaurants to enjoy. This hotel is the only beachfront hotel in La Jolla. Perfect location and the view is amazing. They also have a pool and jacuzzi. Reasons for the 3 stars: The hotel is dated which is fine, but the elevators have a bad old urine odor, the old ac's are loud and the showers may need new filters as the water pressure can be improved. The view from the restaurant is unmatched, however, the food is not worth it. Eat elsewhere and come back for drinks and the magnificent view of the sunsets. read more

We have stayed here several times over the last few years. There was a special through TraveZoo and we thought we would take advantage of it for a little staycation. While, this special waived the resort fee it did not waive the parking fee. As with most hotels today that fee is high, but since you were parked right at the beach, it did not seem excessive for underground parking. All of the employees we came into contact with were very friendly, engaging and welcoming. The room we stayed in, which they listed as a garden view room, was good size but very dated. Appliances in the bathroom were old. The toilet was a very old style and low. Everything was clean and functional. Since it is a dated facility it's very loud and we could hear the individuals staying on either side of us and anyone that walked the hallways or were in the garden area. We went and enjoyed their happy hour in the bar and had a very nice cocktail for a reasonable price. They offer a very nice feature of a shuttle to take you anywhere within a 5 mile radius of the hotel. There are a lot of sightseeing opportunities within that 5 mile radius, including the La Jolla Cove and the Birch aquarium. Since they only have one shuttle a reservation is needed. The problem, though, is that if you have a reservation to take you somewhere and are uncertain of the return time, you may not have the shuttle available and will need to utilize Uber or Yelp, which is not a significant problem other than you're paying for the return trip. We enjoy staying at this property, but under its current dated condition it certainly does not get more than a 3.5 rating. read more

TLDR: This was not a great place to stay in general. It had great views and friendly front desk staff but the rooms were not great and the hotel is noisy and old. La Jolla Shores was one of the hotels we stayed at during our recent San Diego trip. We booked LJS off of the recommendations we got on a Facebook group, and the photos and reviews seemed good. We booked 2 rooms, one with a partial ocean view and 2 queens, and a king oceanfront. First off, this hotel is in a very beautiful and safe location. It is easily accessible for an Uber to drop us off from the hotel. There is a slight fishy smell in the area where the hotel is located from the sea lions. I personally love the smell but you can smell it in the water a bit and through the air conditioning in this area. The front desk staff was nice but quite clueless. The rooms were ready when we arrived. On first impression, the hotel is definitely dated. There was some construction going on, but the facilities are old and showing age. The elevators have an absolutely horrible odor and paint/stairs are chipping. The ice machine was broken and the area around it was flooded with melted ice. The pool is smaller and full of screaming kids and their drunk parents. These kids and their parents were screaming until 11pm that night. The Queen Room appeared clean and was visually fine, but it had a horrific musty odor. Within 10 minutes we found that the AC unit was coated in black mold (see video below). We had to leave that room immediately as we had a headache and didn't want our belongings to pick up the smell. Luckily, the King room did not have this odor. We stayed here for the night and got the Queen room refunded. The room was definitely showing age but it was cute. The ocean view was stunning. The bathroom was very old, so was the carpet, and the AC was rattling and leaking Freon all over the wood patio. We enjoyed La Jolla Shores beach a lot. It was easily accessible from the hotel and it was crowded but very nice. Do note that you will hear screaming kids as the walls at the hotel are thin. We did end up eating at the Shores Restaurant, which I reviewed separately. (Our verdict was: great service & ambiance of the beach, but mediocre & overpriced food). We only stayed one night, because the hotel is old, noisy, and not worth the price of staying the full stay. The staff was nice enough to refund us for the other 2 nights after we showed them the videos of the mold. read more

We stayed here last minute and they were able to accommodate us for a couple of nights. I was surprised and impressed by the customer service from the staff. They were all so nice and welcoming. The building is outdated but not bad, the location being right by the beach definitely makes up for it. They have a restaurant in the hotel and other restaurants that are walking distance. I like how they have a service to set up beach chairs and umbrellas, it's very convenient. Paying for parking is kind of crazy but we lucked out with street parking since it's not a busy season. Problems w in room dining (I'm w toddler and then had a major surgery so needed the in room dining) The tv is from 2000. No streaming. No on demand movies. THE ASSISTANT MANAGER OF THE RESTAURANT LAUREN (ironically) gave me attitude for calling so much and forgot my order twice. I'm amazed that people in those positions are capable of behaving this way and still keep their jobs. This just sealed the deal for me and my opinion of this hotel! The location and beach view is amazing The staff was nice. I planned a little one night get away for family from out of state that just graduated High School. We walked in the early evening along the beach path. My girls were on the swings adjacent to the hotel and a man came up to us and was obviously on a substance or perhaps mental illness. Cursing and yelling profanity. A little scary and concerning. We reported the incident to the hotel front desk. Then we go back up to the room: the girls were still a little shook up then a drunk man knocks on their door thinking it was his friends room: my daughter and I asked him to leave: ( we had connecting rooms ) I know we can't control people's behavior but it was just odd and bazar. I've stayed here before and it was perfect. This time not so much. We go to breakfast the next morning. Yes it was after 11 am so we missed breakfast. We asked for a simple Danish and the server says "we have no Danish" Danish is like bread it's in a package - take it out heat it up and done. Maybe none of this is a big deal but for the amount of money it costs to stay here maybe things like this shouldn't happen- danish no big deal but being uneasy at a hotel stay was strange: again staff is nice and the location and view is amazing- I'd appreciate a response. My favorite beach! If you are in Southern Calif end a this is a top 10 beach. Perfect for the family. We go there to paddle board, surf, and swim. Easy access to food for lunch if you want to grab a bit to each and then go back to the beach. All within walking distance. It's a spot I feel comfortable reading when I'm done with by boarding which the kids play all around me. Speaking of boarding, you can rent boards or bring your own. Paddle into some caves or around the area. You will see divers and swimmers all around. It's just lovely. read more

Where to start? I called to make a reservation for our 1st wedding anniversary and while speaking to 3 different people everything seemed to be set up. The gentleman who had taken my reservation confirmed that I would have a 3rd floor ocean view king bed room and that the champagne and chocolate covered strawberries would be delivered and set up in the room along with the ordered flowers before our arrival. He then transferred me to a lady who placed the order for the champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. She as well confirmed that everything would be set up for our arrival and the surprise for my wife. Upon arrival I learn that my room is on the first floor, no champagne or strawberries were set up and to make things worse, they put us in the worst room possible on the first floor with the view of the ocean and sunset obstructed by a large plant and poles. When I called the front desk to ask about the reservation, champagne and strawberries I was told they will have to look into things and call me back. I was hoping to be having the champagne and strawberries while we enjoyed the sunset from our balcony but by the time they got back to me it was too late and I was told that the strawberries would take 2 hours to make for the chocolate to harden. As far as the room and being changed to a bottom floor room, out of their control and they don't promise any rooms. Well, then why did 3 people confirm my room choice on the phone when I made the reservations? They could not explain that to me. So the next best option was to have them make the chocolate covered strawberries while we were out at dinner and have them along with the strawberries set up while we were out. Well, to my surprise... no champagne or strawberries were set up but were put in the refrigerator... Ok, so I will have to set things up, ruining any surprise for my wife...only to find that there are no champagne flutes and no bucket with ice for the champagne and the strawberries were melted as if they were just made. I make another phone call to the front desk and explain to the lady the situation and she snaps at me that the champagne was delivered... I explained there are no flutes and that is what I am calling about. She says they will get them right to me...fast forward 30 minutes later, almost 9pm now and I decide I will go get them myself. I head to the front desk and gave the lady my name and room number and where can I go to get the flute glasses and I was promptly snapped at by her telling me they are on their way. I walk away not wanting to make a scene but they finally do arrive, 20 minutes later... I am sorry, what a mess! We decided to sit at the bar and watch the sunset on the beach! It was beautiful. The bartender David was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. I was not sure what to drink and he recommended the Shores Surfrider drink based off my preferences. Hands down the BEST mixed cocktail I've have ever had! Highly impressed. Bartender David was awesome. Kept his cool and was super attentive despite it being super busy and few ladies being insanely demanding ordering coffee. Lol. This was our first time visiting La Jolla and booked a hotel the night before. We booked this hotel based on La Jolla Mom's reviews. It did not disappoint. Great location right on the beach, beside the Kellogg park which had a playground for the kids to play on and walking distance to local restaurants. We loved being able to use the pool and hot tub (which was very small) but it was not busy during the time we were there. Although the hotel can use some updates it was great for the price and the rooms were very clean and beds were comfortable. I would recommend not paying for underground parking and just parking on the street. There are some Thursdays you can't park from 7-11am for street cleaning but just move your car if this is the case. read more

This hotel location couldn't be better. Beach front and in the middle of a very cute area with beautiful houses, nice restaurants and a lot of lil kayak and shops to chow from. They have some great tennis courts, a nice pool, table tennis tables, a nice lil restaurant and a very cute Spanish style patio. The rooms are very simple and not modern but it matches the hotel style. Everybody on the staff was very cordial. You also get a welcome drink on check in, what is a nice gesture! The view is beautiful but over rated and not what I expected. They charge 3 different charges hotel stay, resort fee, parking. The furniture is run down. No microwave. My fridge didn't work.,ruined my food. The bathroom wasn't clean, sheets were stained, the drapes on one side broken, the ac leaked and they just put towels under it to soak up leak. They charge automatic 20 percent when ordering room service plus 6 dollars for delivery. Only complimentary coffe in morning. A giant hole under the sink. The furniture looked second hand. Nothing like advertisement. They give the tiny one was shampoo ,conditioner, hand and bath soap, which doesn't do the job especially if you have long hair. Their gym looked like a tiny room , 4 people max could fit in ir. After sharing feedback. We were comped 125. The man who called us was not pleasant at all or understanding. He made me feel dumb. He said we would be comped full resort fee and parking. I told him so does that mean the room was only 40 dollars, he said the resort fee is 40 a night. I said help me to understand you guys charge 3 different fees? He said yes. Well why didn't he say that in the first place. He should have just said that in beginning. Before all this happened I was planning to come back with my family. But after this I most definitely will not. I will stick to the Hilton. Where there is 6 star service. Clean beautiful rooms, complimentary buffet breakfast and exceptional customer service. I will say though caleigh was pleasant but at the end of the day they about there money. Not about customers satisfaction. This is unfortunate but lesson learned. Hilton is half the cost but amazing customer service .full complimentary breakfast buffet, they provide full bottle shampoo and conditioner, body soap, lotion that is amazing and leaves your hair silky smooth and body fresh. Furniture is beautiful, they have microwave,fridge heated pool and have a jacuzzi, huge workout room. Everything is clean and your appreciated there. read more

Room view onto sea cannot be beat, wonderful; 30 seconds from walking on the beach. Front desk staff super helpful. Room furniture poor for long stay. Hotel security (to outside) poor. Many non-front-desk staff are surly. Restaurant poor in all respects (food, service, physical ambience, feeling, price/quality), but up the street are good restaurants so one can avoid the hotel. I stayed 7 nights so could find places outside hotel to eat all meals well. read more

If you need a hotel to stay at in La Jolla, this is it! I have to give this hotel 5 stars. We will definitely be coming back and will be asking for the same room! We had the perfect beachfront view with a balcony! Everything was convenient and customer service was great. This is a public beach but really felt like it was private to the hotel. They provide beach chairs, towels and umbrella. The chairs are not reclining, just regular sitting which was fine. They have a shuttle that will take you up to 5 mile which is awesome. We didn't use but that's great to know for next time. It's next to a huge park for kids and they have a restaurant on the property but there are other restaurants 5 minute away walking distance and shops! I recommend the beachfront view but I'm not telling my room number! read more

The is a sweet place. It is hard to beat the location. I was here several years ago and am thrilled to report that they have replaced their louvre windows with solid windows. They have also put new sliding glass doors in the rooms. This helps with heat insolation and sound. Sadly, the walls are still not insulated, so I can hear the people in the room next to me as though they were in my own room. Also, depending on where you room is, the sounds from the outside courtyard can amplify as they rebound off the walls. So, if you are sound sensitive, you want to bring some earplugs. The staff are all very helpful and friendly. They always wore masks indoors. The place is clean and has that relaxed beachy vibe. They are offering housekeeping every day but Sunday. That was a surprise to me since I haven't seen hotels offering that during the pandemic. You can always put up the "do not disturb" if you aren't comfortable with folks entering the room. Hard to beat the view from the restaurant, especially the window tables. They don't offer room service, but you can call and order a meal for "pick-up." It's just a short walk to the restaurant from your room and mostly outdoors. Very enjoyable. read more

Ahhh La Jolla Shores. Well, folks, this may be one of my favorite spots.... Ever. So much that we decided to get married here. Our wedding was INCREDIBLE (much thanks to our wedding planner), and of course the hotel is amazing. We have stayed here 6 times over the course of the last 4 years (we live outside of Chicago and research the crap out of places before we go~ so that's saying a lot!) and we have always had a top notch experience.
