This hotel is at a beautiful location. The staff was so friendly. Serves a casual complimentary breakfast, had great coffee there (I never like hotel coffee). The view is beautiful and calming. You can hear the waves at night. It's steps from the beach. Pool and jacuzzi onsite with ocean view. A few minutes walking is downtown with lots of shops and places to eat from casual to fine dining. It felt safe walking around. 15 mins away is an outlet mall as well as a high end mall. I loved this hotel it's one of my new favorites at a SoCal beach and can't wait to return. My ONLY complaint is that it was weird how dusty the remotes were- it was off putting when we came into our room BUT after looking around everything else was so clean it didn't matter. Another odd thing is they do t provide you any extra toilet paper- we had a roll and had to ask for another one. But it's SoCal so could be an environmental issue that we were unaware of. They also have chairs and towels and boogie boards for your use. We were thankful for that! Across the street is a bike rental place. All in all 5 stars and will recommend to everyone I know. Madeline was so sweet and kind at the lemonade stand on Sunday! She always smiled and was welcoming every time my husband and I came by. She certainly deserves a promotion and will be super successful in anything that comes her way. She also upsold us the most delicious chocolate chip cookies which were mouthwatering and so yummy! The fresh squeezed lemonade is a huge hit! I love the resort and the service! Maddy also brought me another round of lemonade to the pool which I really appreciated! There is so much to love about this place. Great location, beautiful rooms and great housekeeping. But unfortunately we got room 52 which had a broken phone, broken clothes steamer and was directly under a roof deck where they loudly moved furniture around in both the evenings and early mornings which sounded like a high school basketball game was happening upstairs. I can't believe they expect people to put up with this. If I ever return I will make sure I don't end up in this room. Shame on the management for thinking this is remotely acceptable for $650+ a night! read more

As everyone has already said the location and being right on the beach is GREAT. Overall the room was nice with a great view off our terrace of the sea and pool area. The carpet had seen better days for it was torn and worn out. The bathroom did have a odor that I think was the mold growing around the whole base of the shower. We were in room 61 and check out the photo of the mold growth, pretty scary. Would I stay there again? Not for the prices they charge. read more

Pros: Beautiful view with a picture perfect location. You wake up and fall asleep to the sound of the ocean outside your door. The rooms are massive and the bathrooms are sleek and clean despite being right on the beach (the worst is when there is sand everywhere. A+ job to the cleaning crew!) It's a short walk away from Carlsbad Village Drive which is home to a bunch of cute shops, and restaurants. Keep in mind - most of the stores close at 9pm. Cons: We stayed on the bottom level and there was absolutely no cell service. Texts and calls were impossible to send and receive. The wireless internet was slow as well, so it was a bit frustrating, especially since my job is internet based. The breakfast was delicious but it's mostly carbs, and we really wish they had a restaurant in the hotel. There are also no elevators so be prepared for stairs! Not many, but if you have trouble walking, ask for a room close to street level. Customer service needs a revamp as well. The kids working by the pool were wonderful, it's the front desk representatives were pretty useless. There was a lack of professionalism. It was August, aka the peak time of their season, and there were very few employees present. Overall we had a wonderful and relaxing time and I would definitely suggest if you are looking for a vacation where you can disconnect! read more

My family and I really enjoyed our stay here. We had an ocean front room with a balcony that's literally on the sand . At night you can fall asleep to sound the waves. Alex at the front desk was courteous and accommodating. He exemplified excellent customer service. Just about every employee we came into contact with had a smile and asked if there's anything they can do. I really appreciate that . Great view and inescapable roar from the surf. This place is right on the beach and one of the few hotels where the rooms & views look exactly like the photos on the website. We checked in for a couple of days during spring break, and we're not disappointed. Big room, big bathroom, comfy couch and small but well apportioned balcony looking right out on the beach. We had a "Beach Front" room and you could throw a cell phone into the ocean from our balcony! There are some other rooms which have a "Beach View" but not actually on the beachfront itself. Parking was right across the street (but there's very little traffic). Light packed luggage we carried ourselves. This place was recently upgraded and they were installing handicapped chairs for pool and hot tub access while we watched. There are stairs so if you are chair bound or otherwise seriously handicapped, this place is really not for you. If you want the ocean with very little tidal movement, but beautiful roaring surf all the time, then this is the spot. Older folk are welcome, and families with kids were playing Frisbee, and hitting a sponge ball into the waves. The big bathroom has a private toilet, an amazing big nice modern shower, and immediate hot water. The only thing lacking was a magnifying vanity mirror, but wasn't missed much. The staff are super friendly and can direct you anywhere. If you enjoy the free continental breakfasts (like we did) in the lounge you can talk to Dorothy whose been there almost three decades. Rooms are super big and the single king room size leaves plenty of entertaining space. We had an awesome comfy king size bed, full sized couch from which we watched the sunset one night, desk area and very nice closet space. Fridge under the coffee/bar sink, nice to have right in the room. Wall to wall carpet was very clean and sand free. If you are going to work there, just avoid needing any roaming web access, the wifi was just way too slow and totally useless. Well recommended, we will return. read more

He told me several times that if i smoke in the room they have very sensitive smoke alarm it will go off. The staff was so busy they forgot to move out items to another room even after two hours of waiting. Also we were walked in on several times by maintenance and maids. I'm on day 2 of my stay-cation, and so far this ideally-located, boutique hotel is perfect in every way. It's hard to go wrong being literally on the beach, but this property doesn't rest on its prime location.... Rather, they seemingly strive for a level of professionalism and unbridled hospitality that has thus far made my stay perfect. The room is beautiful. My floor to ceiling plantation shutters open to the Pacific Ocean. The modern decor and recent remodel has put off some of the older clientele (who were used to bargain rates), but to me it felt luxurious without being ostentatious. The location, amenities, refinements, and staff make this hotel worth every penny of the rather stiff rates. I will be back, sooner rather than later, and I highly recommend this property. read more

Came here for a girls birthday weekend in October . First off Carlsbad is such a beautiful city. This hotel was top notch and lived up to all of our expectations. The included complimentary breakfast was better than most and the coffee especially was not the usual watered down mess that is served at a continental breakfast. We just checked out after a two night stay. This place was great! It's literally right on the beach! The breakfast each morning overlooking the pool and the ocean was much better than your average continental breakfast. This is a great unpretentious family place. The guys that work on the beach setting up the chairs and umbrellas each day are so accommodating. The only reason I'm not giving it five stars is that we were there with our two sons ( a family of four) and the beds are really small. I think they are full size. 2 full sized beds is not really big enough for two adults and 2 tall teenagers to share. The rooms are certainly big enough to fit two queen size beds. Next time I will book it earlier so we can get a room facing the ocean with 2 king beds. Other than that, it was an awesome stay! read more

I love this little hotel. When I lived in LA, I formerly escaped here for a day or two at a time. Since moving to San Diego for a new job, I had skipped it but I decided to return this year. The hotel was undergoing a bit of construction, but the noise was minimal and the staff was absolutely great about it. Still, there is no better place for face time with the beach. Sitting on the balcony, the waves are 25 feet away, one can see dolphins, pelicans...it's like Blue Planet out there if you just cozy up on the balcony sofa and stare at the ocean. The rooms are huge and very cool looking with lots of space. Such a nice break from tiny hotel rooms! When I've stayed here before, I had breakfast in a large public room, but the hotel was renovating it so they delivered breakfast in a cool orange picnic basket to my room. I made coffee that was provided and I was so happy that breakfast meant more balcony sitting time. They also offered to set up chairs/table ON THE BEACH if I wanted to eat there. So awesome. This was a superb hotel, and I enjoyed my stay. My husband and I stayed in a room facing the ocean, and this is definitely the way to go. Our balcony featured an extremely squishy/comfortable couch which we made use of while watching the waves crash right in front of us. The bathroom was magnificent, and had one of the most amazing showers I have ever seen in person. I felt like I was showering in a warm tropical rain. The room itself was lovely, fresh, and clean. It was beautiful. We had free breakfast in the morning in the lounge. I filled up on the uber fresh godsent strawberries, but they also had a variety of pastries, bagels, cereals, etc. Unfortunately, there was no hot breakfast (other than toasting your own bagel). We did not use the pool or jacuzzi, but these were on the first floor and had a sweet view of the ocean. The entire hotel is directly on the beach, so all you have to do to get there is step outside the hotel's private beach access door! I honestly loved every moment of staying here. We encountered several staff and everyone was beyond helpful. From the first person at the front desk, to the last person at checkout, all of the staff was friendly and polite. Check-in was very easy. We did have a bit of trouble connecting to Wi-Fi initially, but someone came to our room and helped me log in. I had zero problems with Wi-Fi anywhere in the Inn after that. The room was very large and comfortable. We had a two king room. Both beds were great. The bathroom is also very large with an awesome shower. Everything was in great working order in the room and has been kept up well. I loved the two wine glasses in the room because of course I brought vino! I could have sat on the balcony of my room drinking wine and watching the ocean waves crash for eternity. The pool area was also great. There is almost always a staff member around to help you check out beach gear. It was so nice to not have to worry about packing anything sandy back into the car. They had chairs, toys, umbrellas, and boogie boards that were all in good condition. There is also a small shower to rinse off once you're done on the beach. And oh boy, I loved the couches near the pool. What a wonderful way to unwind. I truly believe that people who are rating Beach Terrace Inn with lower stars are probably people who are very hard to please. This hotel earned every star that I gave it and more. Don't get me wrong, part of me is worried that if I write out how I truly feel about this place, it'll only make it get busier. What can I say, I have to let people know what a hidden gem this is. At this price point, I did NOT expect to fall so madly in love with this place. In fact I had no idea what to expect. Well...You have to be here to truly experience and feel the vibe. So hard to put it in words. Large rooms. Beautiful views. Delicious breakfast. Excellent customer service. Very close to the greatest restaurants. We used grub hub at least once a day during our stay, and ordered from some of the most amazing restaurants. So the lack of room service mentioned in some of the reviews didn't really matter to us. We got the pool cabana room. Our boys (6 and 11) had the best time. I would say that lack of an elevator and no cleaning service did make me cringe for a good second, but all the amazing things this location offers more than made up for it. Not just because it's right on the sand, but you have 20-40 restaurants within a .25-.5 ml walk to Carlsbad village. Our room was very large. Plenty of room. Bathroom was very well done. Large showers, good water pressure. Looked newly remodeled. Mini fridge was a plus for leftovers too. Staff was very friendly and knowledgable. Free breakfast was good. Coffee, tea. Bagel, toast. Yogurts, cereal, fresh fruit. I would have loved to of give this hotel 5 stars. But couldn't for lack of wifi connection. Good thing it was free because it was worthless. Pros- This is a beautiful hotel. We stayed here to go to LegoLand. The room was very clean and the balcony on the ocean was amazing. Loved the wave sounds when we slept. Cons- No pull out bed in the room. You have to pay 40$ extra to get one. I have a four year old and we just put some cushions down on the ground with some blankets and it worked. The breakfast was really nice, but don't expect it to be a cooked meal. It's cereal, yogurt, pastries, fruit, instant oatmeal, and frozen egg sandwiches that were heated up. Don't expect eggs and bacon and someone making you an omelet. We would probably stay here again, maybe without kids and/or going to LegoLand. read more

Beautiful Oceanside boutique hotel experience! My mom and I stayed here for our girls trip along the San Diego coast. I'm glad this was our last hotel because it was by far the nicest room & best view of the ocean! Prudence checked us in early and helped make local suggestions & get an iPhone app that shows nearby activities! She was a sweetheart! We had a double king room, unit 16 that was on the lowest floor literally 5 feet over the beautiful carlsbad sandy beach. One of the only negatives to this stay was the horrible cell reception & impossible wifi! I couldn't even get a text to go through while staying here... But that might have been part of the "escape"! Also no bell hop or valet- in fact the parking is very shady across the street. We saw a van had it's back window broken in the night we were there. The room had a mini fridge & wet bar that had wine glasses, a wine opener, and two huge complimentary bottles of water. The shower was roomy & the water pressure perfect! Loved the sandy feet wipe in the bathroom as well as mouthwash. After staying in 3 other San Diego area hotels this one had small extras that make a difference. My mom and I decided next summer we will just stay at the Beach Terrace for our entire trip! read more

Right on the beach; this place is perfect. Breakfast is served to your door every morning (continental, not home cooked or anything). You choose what you want for breakfast and they drop it off in a picnic style basket. You don't even have to answer the door. Bed is very comfortable. Outdoor heated pool and jacuzzi. I've stayed at this hotel many times over the years. It's still not bad but only if you're good with the clientele being about the same as a holiday inn. The staff is cool but almost too cool because they let kids just run a muck around the whole freaking property. They have a nice California residents discount and I suspect these people are taking advantage(I don't live in CA anymore so I'm paying full price). We can even use the pool or hot tub because it's inundated with loud obnoxious children(Yes I have children but I left them at home and I would be embarrassed taking them to this property if they acted like these brats) This is not the place you want to stay if you're looking for peace and quiet. Also, they don't seem to have amenities they use to have and of course they're blaming it all on covid. I'm so sick of that excuse to save money or be lazy. Hopefully managment and ownership can pull their heads out of there keysters and make this more of a classy hotel it was in years past. read more

They had ongoing construction going past 6pm at night and starting g at 7am on Saturday morning. It was so loud I couldn't even here the waves. Beware!! Stayed here for a night and got our car window smashed in while in their "private parking" right in front of their reception office. We were not offered anything you would think that at least a room discount after the couple hundred I'll have to pay to get the window fixed. Once WE asked for something to clean the car with since I had a toddler in the back and there was glass everywhere they called the maintenance guy who was really helpful and vacuumed the car for us and taped the window with cardboard while we made it back home and is the only reason for the second star. And when asked for some sort of discount the staff simply played it off. The rooms are not worth it to get your car broken into. read more

We have stayed there three times and love the proximity to town, the gorgeous ocean views and the comfort of our rooms. Was excited to see how spacious the room was and the view was great. My problem with my stay here is that there is absolutely no customer service even though there are cards and information booklets in the room telling you about their complimentary services to make your stay more comfortable. 1. The card left on the pillow says we care about your relaxation all the way down to the pillow, and lists 5 different types of pillows that you can request. When I called the front desk, I almost hung up because he took so long to answer. When he did answer, he initially had no idea what I was talking about. I repeated my request and he said I think we are all out but I'll go check and call you back. I never got a call back. 2. The booklet claims they have 24 hour guest services and that "your comfort is of utmost importance to us. As a result, complimentary amenities including razors, shaving cream, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and mouthwash are available from the Front Desk 24 Hours a day". Turns out I left my dental floss at home, asked my husband to go down and ask if they had any dental floss, which didn't seem like an unreasonable request given the amenities they list, the door was locked and no one appeared to be there. My husband came back up to call to see if anyone would answer and was told that they didn't have any. Beach Terrace Inn: Please update the information you provide your guests. I would not have wasted my time asking if I had not read about these services on the materials that were provided. Honestly, I would not stay here again. For the money, I can definitely receive better customer service elsewhere. Trying to dress up your property as a luxury resort while providing zero customer service is just a lie. If you take away the fact this property is beach front, the property itself does not even compete with a Courtyard Marriott. At least Marriott provides excellent customer service. read more

I was a little nervous booking due to the fact I wanted everything to work out flawlessly, since my girlfriend was graduating college and I was going to propose this weekend. From the top down I was treated with such great service. I contacted Constance (the manager) before I booked and she personally assisted in any way possible. She offered her staff to also help in most cases as well (although I did not need anyone to assist with the proposal part). Since I injured my back the staff was willing to take all the heavy luggage down/up the stairs for us! The inner smile from the service transitioned to physical smile once we saw the room. No better view of the ocean than to be right on it. Everything was perfect and we couldn't have asked for more. I have stayed at plenty of hotels of my 35 years, and I must say that this place is the status quo. I will now compare all hotels and quality of service to you. I won't book anywhere else when I'm even close to Carlsbad. I knew exactly what I wanted when I booked this hotel. I did my research and wanted a hotel with an oceanfront view close to the sand. That's exactly what we got. Pictures on the website are exactly how the room looked. We stayed in Room 27. The room was very large and clean. The bathroom was very large as well with a large shower that could fit 3 people in it. The view was breathtaking and you can hear the ocean waves crashing all the time, even with the slider shut. We slept with the slider open every night and it was very peaceful. This hotel is the perfect romantic getaway or family fun trip as well. The only thing I would add is a vanity mirror in the bathroom. They have a really nice complementary breakfast and the hostess Dorothy was extremely nice and informative. Just a suggestion to the owners that maybe in the future you could put together complimentary cheese and wine for the evenings. Even without those things this place was the perfect get away.
