I cancelled my reservation 2 weeks before my trip - they wouldn't give a refund - in the bussiest season for San Diego - June... meaing they sold the room to someone else and kept my money. I have never seen such a dirty business. Book at your own risk. If this is how they treat a reservation I can only imagine how they treat guest. Our first time here for our Anniversary getaway! It's was very clean and such super nice staff here. We walked a cross the street to the beach. We along the beach I think we did over 14,899 steppes that day. And watched the the sunset..beautiful sunsets Great fire pits 3 to choose from with very nice fireplace too Lots chairs and tables to read & covered areas too. Pool and jacuzzi in the back. Parking is all round the building first come first serve They have good size suites, some with yards it's turf green not grass. This resort is well kept. Flowers all around very green and with Big tiki's too And quiet too which is very relaxing here and close to the Village and stores & restaurants are walking distance is plus. We stay here every time we visit Carlsbad with our pups, and it's a great spot! The location can't be beat- right across from the beach and in the heart of Carlsbad Village. Peak-season rates are understandably higher, off-season rates are very reasonable. Some tips for future guests: first-floor rooms may have the occasional insect (part of being near the beach), the pullout sofa isn't the most comfortable, breakfast is modest, and the internet can be tricky if you're streaming or on video calls. Paper towels aren't provided in the kitchen, so bring your own. A little mold near the shower tile is normal for a coastal property. If it were possible to find solutions for these it would be perfection. The property is clean (especially for how pet friendly it is), the staff is welcoming, and everything is convenient. We love the front patio, there's plenty of nearby grass for the doggos, and the neighborhood feels safe for evening walks. It's a perfect choice for a cozy beach getaway with pets, and we'll definitely be back! read more

My family and I have been coming to this resort for 3 generations (grandparents, parents, and now me as a parent with my family) and we were greeted with the worst front desk customer service I've ever encountered at this resort. So much so, the rude customer service made me cry on my daughters first birthday because of the horrible check in experience. Although the front desk made an exception for me, I couldn't shake off the hostile encounter with the front desk (I didn't get his name). I will never forget the moment I apologized and said it wouldn't happen again, and he reassured me that he will never be making that exception in the future. With that being said, I vow to never stay here again. Leaving behind generations of memories at this resort, I'm disappointed to have experienced such a horrible encounter on what should've been a memorable experience for my family. I will say the other younger gentleman with the curly hair was much more hospitable and showed professional and exceptional customer service. If you're reading this, thank you for showing me not all the staff is that horrible. Thanks for helping me find parking! Aside from the customer service part, we found two cockroach-like small bugs :/ one on the bed and one on dishes I had recently cleaned. Awesome boutique hotel in Carlsbad, CA! I absolutely LOVE this gem of a place. **limited parking available, so large vehicles (sprinter vans, vans, full sized trucks will be difficult to park) This place is awesome. Over 120 boutique hotel rooms nestled in a tranquil, lush, and quiet area. Within 2 minutes walking distance to the public beach access point (sand volleyball courts) where you can swim, surf, sunbathe, or just chill on one of the several park benches overlooking the water. Check-in is within a specific time window, so pay attention to what time you'll arrive. Again, this is a boutique hotel, not a Marriott, so the office hours are not what one would normally expect. This place offers a continental breakfast, coffee (no decaf), and an assortment of teas. There's a small gym too (hours 07:30 a.m.-1000pm and you'll need to ask the front desk for a single use key card to get in). Free weight stack from 5lbs - 50lbs. A large combination machine, includes leg press, chest pec Dec, reverse fly machine, triceps,and preacher curl. There's a treadmill, elliptical and a bike, as well as an adductor/abbductor machine. They even have a squat rack with a flat bench, and an adjustable bench. If you're somewhat familiar with gym equipment, you'll be able to make it work. Additionally, this place has a pool and a hot tub. Rooms are upgraded interiors, nice shower and single sink, full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, oven) minus the microwave (rm 221), other rooms may have different set ups. Really beautiful grounds, super close to the beach (literally within walking distance, right across the street). The patio area has fire pits Thad come on each night, making for a great place to hang out. We enjoyed the Starbucks coffee in the lobby. If you are looking for lodging that is uniquely SoCal beach, this is the place for you. Though not extravagantly appointed- no gold gilded chandeliers- it is both lovely and comfortable in a genuine sort of way. I stayed in one of their least expensive rooms ( luxury studio). It was generous in space and decorated in a vintage California beach sort of style . The grounds are remarkably lush and serene for a location just across the street from the ocean, with ample outdoor seating options. Included are a pool and jacuzzi. Also included are beach chairs and towels to take to the beach with you. Very child friendly vibe. If you like to stay in places that actually represent a particular area rather than a more generic chain ( for instance), Ocean Palms is a great choice for you and for your family. read more

I want to take a few minutes to write a review for a hotel that interestingly could be FIVE STARS for some travelers or ONE STAR for others -- thus I went with three stars for this review. We had a family reunion at Ocean Palms recently. As a result I got to spend time in three different rooms. The first point is there is a HUGE difference between rooms. Our "mini-suite" was a little disappointing. My parent's room (one of the unique rooms, centrally located) was amazing. That room was sunny and it was nice laying on the beds and looking out. There were dedicated picnic tables outside their front door for our family to gather and eat outside. On the other hand, our mini-suite was in a dark corner, half way through the visit we got neighbors who smoked pot which smelled up our room. (I just fact checked on the website and our room and my parent's room are approximately the same price). Please note THE WALLS OF THE RESORT are VERY THIN - you hear everything outside as if the people are in your room. (Advice to management - you have an amazing hotel and amazing location and you obviously put love into the room decorations - soundproofing the rooms would greatly enhance the experience.) The resort advertises daily cleaning but we were skipped one day even though we pulled in our 'do not disturb' notice at 9:30 am. The next day we had to speak to the front desk (resulted in towels) and then ask the cleaners to finish the job (done hours later). The room had a full kitchen but no microwave! A microwave will matter more than a stove to most people. (some rooms have microwaves) The utensils were of dollar store quality - some rooms had no wine opener. The cleaners did not touch anything that was dirty in the sink (so plan to do your own kitchen cleaning). We also had obvious paper bags with trash overflow in them and they left them in the room. On a positive, the beach access is just across the street. There is a pool but it is a micro-pool. The front office will lend just about anything you need for the beach - although the lender items are dated/rusty - still it is helpful. We returned everything and did not incur charges - but be careful - they list beach towels at $50 if not returned. Boogie board was nice quality/newer. Who may this be a FIVE star for? Young families; extended families not looking for luxury; young couples on a budget. Bottom line: I'd consider staying again but would also research other options. I hope this review is helpful. Again, this resort will be great for some travelers. If I was in my 20s I'd absolutely love it. read more

Location location location right in the heart of Carlsbad beach surrounded by endless entertainment and lots if restuarants. Most of all super dog friendly and a stone throw from the beach. This is a very family friendly spot with a kitchen fully prep for dinner time if going out is out of the budget. I love how they light up a few fire pits and tiki torches at night by a good size seating areas plenty of space for privacy. Parking is a little challeging but expected for the location. We went early and was able to check in at around 2 pm at 4th of July weekend! You do need to pay up front at least 6-8 months out so be prep for that. read more

ALL of them at the front desk are consistently excellent..helpful, professional, friendly and a pleasure to interact with (Beau, Barry, Kendra, Lori and shame on us for forgetting the other names.). The property is so well manicured and maintained and the rooms so clean and comfortable..location could not be better with respect to the beach and restaurants..we consider ourselves regulars now and will definitely be back..pool, hot tub and fitness center giant plusses as well. Walls are paper thin, I do not like hearing the upstairs neighbors have horizontal boogie, rude talkers late at night talking outside of rooms, but the WORST- is the maids that wake you up at the crack of dawn! Oh hell- maids at 0745 on a Sunday. I will never stay here again, no consideration for travelers that need a little R&R. This not a resort for relaxing- it is LOUD, and there are children everywhere. So if you are traveling with kids this is your place! You will not sleep and but your kids will have fun! read more

We have been coming here for years and we are obsessed!! One of my favorite hotels I have ever been to. It really is an immersive experience. You feel like you are transported to a tropical paradise. The property is filled with trees and Polynesian decor and it is such an uplifting place to be. They have a little convenience store on the property for ice and small necessities that you might have forgotten. They also provide beach towels and chairs upon request! The owners are so nice and accommodating! As well is the rest of the staff! I highly recommend coming here!! Ps. It could be cheaper to book on Expedia than their website! Ocean Palms Beach Resort is a small sized resort, just a block away from Carlsbad State Beach. It is also within walking distance of the many fine restaurants, cafes and boutiques. What makes this a nice vacation experience is the above mentioned. While the other resorts in the town are huge with a lots of people and activity, Ocean Palms feels more low key, fewer people and less noise. Simple amenities are offered in their Check In office such as a self service Starbucks coffee machine, fruits, snacks, juices. Outdoors, a pool and lounge area with fire pits. The rooms are nicely decorated, simple but comfortable enough accomodations for a daytime refresher or overnight stay. If you want a less crowded resort, right across from the beach, away from the busy part of town, Ocean Palms Resort is a nice choice! read more

The hotel is right by the beach! Our room was very nice and clean. I love the fire pits that they have going a couple of hours at night. The wide range of amenities makes this hotel worth the price. It is located near downtown Carlsbad and the small eateries are within walking distance. The service is very friendly! They have towels you can take to the beach and they also let you borrow chairs. They probably have sand toys too. The continental breakfast is convenient. I knocked Off one star because on the dates that we were there it (June 17-19) it seemed that the ladies at the front desk were not as enthused about their jobs as they guys were. Harassed and forced to check out early. My family and I stayed during the 4th of July weekend. The place is beautiful, family owned and BO (owner's son) was very hospitable. I got good vibes from him. But my issue with this place is an ethical one. Apparently there was a guest next door who complained we made too much noise on the night of 4th of July (fireworks going off all night). How much noise can a family with a 3 year old and 9 month baby make? The fireworks didn't keep you up lady? The manager (Jose) notified us that we made noise. He did not even give me 5 minutes to correct the issue and then sent a security guard to my room. Scared the hell out of my wife and kids. Then i realised, this was not about noise. This was a discrimination against us muslims. My wife covers herself from head to toe in a muslim garment. This other guest who made complaints against us obviously did not like us. I notified the manager, that I have realised that this is an act of discrimination and not about noise. Its 4th of July, there are fireworks going off louder than my children and it sounds like a war zone. If your hotel does not stand for this, now is the time to make a stand. Actions speak louder than words. I demanded a full refund from the management and checked out early (10:40pm). While trying to pack, jose calls and asks when will I be checking out? (Basically means hurry up). We left the hotel and I ended up getting a room At the Omni resort. We didn't get any noise complaints there because that place is civilised and accepting of us; A real resort. I am sad to say this, but the management only gave me one night's refund. I did no wish to write this negative review, because I understand times are tough. I really liked BO because of his hospitality. Perhaps if BO was present that evening, things may have turned out different for us. However, I think because of the humiliation my family and I experienced, if the management has any humanity in them: we deserve a full refund of our whole stay. read more

We have stayed at Ocean Palms several times over the past few years and have totally fell in love with the place. The rooms are amazing super clean and well furnished plus it's nice to have a full kitchen and separate living room. The property is extremely well maintained and the courtyard has total Hawaii vibes tons of palm trees and and tiki statues. At night they have several fire pits that they light up and it super nice to just sit and listen to the ocean. The location of the property couldn't be in a better location it's real close to all the restaurants and bars all within walking distance. And last but not least is the front desk guy Bo. He's always super welcoming and extremely helpful with anything from restaurants recommendations or to getting you some water for the day at the beach. Ocean Palms Beach Resort has the worst customer service you will ever experience!!! November 2023 Just happened tonight. Absolutely the worst experience I have ever experienced, trying to get into the hotel. My wife and I flew across country for a business event and went straight to the Ocean Palms Beach Resort in Carlsbad, California. When we arrived at the Ocean Palms Beach Resort in Carlsbad, the door was appropriately locked. It was 11p. We called the number on the door which was a call center. All we had received was an email advising a security guard would take a copy of our ids and provide us a key. The call center advised we would receive a call back. NO call for over 10 minutes so we called back. We are on the sidewalk with our luggage on a Saturday night at 1100p. We again called and advised that we considered the situation dangerous. The call center advised someone would call us. My wife then receives a call from the hotel night manager Barry. He advises that it will be 20 to 30 minutes until someone would arrive to let us in the hotel, as I'm staring at a sign that clearly states the hotel is open 24hrs. He was not apologetic and very dismissive. Had he at least apologized for the situation I wouldn't be writing this. It truly felt like we had created an inconvenience for him. I take the phone and Barry starts to tell me the 'the gal' he was just talking to .....I cut him off immediately and advise that's my wife and she is not a gal.. she is a customer and woman... I advise Barry that we are on the street with our luggage for 30 minutes, it's now 1130p in a town we don't know. Yes, I'm irritated. But, I obviously hurt Barry's feelings. Barry hangs up on me. I call the call center back and they advise that Barry feels like he was 'verbally abused' and we can find another hotel...we walked around Carlsbad with our luggage in tow, now it's past midnight. 3 hotels are full. We finally find one. We are in our 50's and professional business executives, who frequently travel globally. You can imagine our disbelief of the horrible treatment we had experienced by Barry, and especially this being our first time in Carlsbad. I will be reaching out to the Chamber of Commerce and all other sites to ensure that everyone knows the extremely dangerous situation we were put in by the Ocean Palms Beach Resort in Carlsbad, California. This is a true story and if I were you and looking for a place to stay in Carlsbad CA., stay away from the Ocean Palms Beach Resort. You may hurt one of there employees feelings and get locked out or kicked out. An absolute nightmare in customer service... I wonder if we will get a refund!!!!! read more

This place is NOT worth the rate we paid. We were so excited to getaway to the beach for one night and enjoy some relaxing time. The rate was high in my opinion, but would have been worth it to me had the room been nice. Upon arrival I immediately noticed the smell when we walked in and when I used the bathroom there was a huge spider in the corner. You couldn't miss it, so I'm not sure how the cleaning crew left it there. The room was mediocre and stinky. And super old and rickety. Our room was literally right next to the gate that opens to the back alley way outside the property and all we heard the entire night was the gate SLAMMING shut. We literally got NO sleep. This place really needs to be updated. Nice location, but will never be back. The air conditioning unit seemed like it had mold or mildew smells coming from it. And my boyfriend didn't feel well at all after running it. Stay far away from this low budget motel. read more

This was a wonderful experience! The location is amazing, walkable to everything you need or could want. The resort is so cute and tropical, the pool area was nice and quiet, there are bbqs scattered around and the fire pit sitting area had plenty of space for a nice big group of people. I highly recommend staying here. It's a very relaxed atmosphere and homey. There are no elevators so if you get a 2nd floor room, you will have to carry luggage upstairs but we were well-warned ahead of time. We came here mid-week to escape the heat. Bo checked us in and was so helpful and courteous!! We were super pleased with the front desk service!! We were visiting family but needed one night at a hotel. This was a great find, a block away from the beach with amazing grounds. Our room had a kitchenette with a jacuzzi tub. A continental breakfast was included. We also enjoyed the hot tub and fire pit. The staff was super friendly and called us to let us know we had left something behind before we got too far away. The resort also had several goodies to loan out for the beach including towels, boogie boards, beach chairs, etc.. loved the tropical gardens around the pool and fire pits. My family and I stayed at the Beach Palms Beach Resort for three nights. I'll start with the positive; The location is wonderful, the resort is located in Carlsbad Village which means if you're staying there you're within walking distance to cafes, bars, and restaurants, and public beach access is across the street. The setup on the resort property is fun with its tiki torches and palm tree carvings. The common area has nice fire pits with seating and the pool and hot tub area seem to be well maintained. Also, shout out to the staff, every employee that I personally dealt with during our stay was super friendly and helpful. Because the room was ready, the gentleman who checked us in allowed us to gain access to our room prior to official check-in time. That's always nice. The negative; The air conditioner in the room didn't work the three nights we stayed there. after our first night there I asked the front desk to have maintenance look at it while we were out and about, which they did because it was on and blowing cool air when we arrived back to the room. It was pretty chilly in the room so we turned it off. Then in the evening when I went to turn it back on it again didn't work. We had to keep the windows open to get a breeze going to cool down the room which meant that we were subject to pedestrian noise on Friday and Saturday nights. I didn't get a good night's sleep, but the location and staff are outstanding. I imagine that the issue I had with our room's air conditioning unit is not common. I'd stay at the Beach Palms Beach Resort again, but perhaps in a different room. read more

My brother and his wife stayed here and it was awesome! Welcoming, great staff in the office, beach chairs and towels available to borrow, wine glasses. coffee in the office all day, parking pass, close to everything, cozy and clean. This is not a high end resort, just a very cool neighborhood hotel across the street from the beach--laid back and easy. No one showed up and when we called the call center, they called the night manager Barry. He said maybe someone would show up in 20-30 min and when we said that was not ok, he hung up on us. we were standing in the middle of the street with our luggage and had nowhere to go. when we called the call center again, they said they could not help us because we apparently "hurt barry's feelings". seriously??? they left us stranded in the middle of the night with nowhere to go. they are pathetic and ridiculous - worst place ever. do yourself a favor and never call them for a reservation. read more

We have been staying here every year for about 5 years. Our favorite thing about this resort is the location. When we first started staying here, we felt very welcomed by the staff. But this property has taken a turn for the worst in terms of service. We arrived after a long drive, my husband needed to use the restroom in the lobby. The boy with curly hair in the front desk (think Kenny G.), hollers at him, "hey, are you staying with ME?" My husband says yes. He then proceeds to say "don't make a mess!". What the actual heck?! What hospitable staff would tell their customer "don't make a mess"?! Same boy (yes I'm calling him a boy because no mature person in the hospitality workforce would act this rude) was in the front when we needed towels for the pool. We asked for three-- for me, my husband, and our 4 year old. He said we can only have 2. I have no clue why, but I don't think lending one additional towel would hurt the hotel at all. Not good customer service. The lady who's there in the mornings don't even look up when guests come in the lobby, maybe she's on her cellphone. Idk. The maids are LOUD in the morning. This property was supposed to be a relaxing one, but the bad customer service is such a turn off. read more

Overall the stay was average. The resort is a conversion of an old motel; it's been done very well; we had a single room upstairs overlooking the parking lot. The resort only has nine parking spots and one handicap. So when it says parking is included, that's not quite accurate. You must use what is on the street unless you can get one of the ten spaces. We had to ask for help on Friday evening about where we could park. This could be a problem on a busy summer weekend. The little breakfast you can get is really the equivalent of shopping the bakery section of 7-11, but it is on par with most. Having a kitchen in your room will stretch your money or dine out for breakfast at any location within walking distance. Their landscape is beautiful and the grounds are clean. I suspect the place can get noisy as there can be many people staying in one room or suite. We had a large group of kids( about 12) with four adults next to us, they had a good time, but it was noisy. There are lots of staff working to keep the place in good shape. I was not impressed with some comments made by the front desk staff regarding what he believed is appropriate for a Disney movie. I will not stay her again. read more

As a hard working single mom I treat my daughter to fun night away quite a bit ! The young man at the front I didn't catch his name but he is lovely ! Longer curly hair so sweet , warm and welcoming . The property is clean and safe the pool is warm . The room is quite nice ! But .... The people next to us I'm not joking it sounds like they are in our room and they have kept me up all night ! I can hear them pee , spit , shower , bang around . The walls are so thin it's like they are next to me . This place would be great if you didn't have any neighbors ! Or we're planning to be up all night . I work 120 hours every 2 weeks I'm tired !!!! I LOVE THIS PLACE. In fact, I wrote this review in 10/2012 and (for 4 yrs) I PLANNED trips to Carlsbad just to stay here... OK, let's get the CONS out of the way first. 1. Wi-Fi. Worked fine in the morning, but not at all past 6pm. If you have important business or that porn just cannot wait, I suggest going wired. 2. The hot tub controls should be easier to locate (they're behind a bush so big I've seen it in an adult film from the 70s). And they need to be easier to read in the dark. It was trial and error, pressing the buttons while my friend sat in the tub. So many buttons, like a blender. I was afraid one of the buttons might be puree. SORRY! NOW FOR THE NON-CONS (PROS): #1: The incredible outdoor shower pressure is set to "1965 Watts Riot". You can wipe off sand. You can also shred a head of cabbage, too, if you want to make some cole slaw. I'm pretty sure Michael Jackson used this shower to become white. #2: Location to the beach. You walk ACROSS THE STREET to the stairs that lead directly to the surf. It's not just "steps to the beach". It is "steps to the steps to the beach." And because it's below the cliffs you don't get the people noise, just the roar of the waves. #3: Location to the village. Lots of bars and restaurants a short walk away. See my reviews on Norte, Boar's Crossing, Knockout Pizza, Coyote Grill, Naked Cafe, Las Olas, Village Pub, the Compass, Vigilucci's, Casa de Bandini, Pedego Carlsbad & Golden Tee. Do not see my review on Koko Beach (it was taken down for being too mean) or Charlie's Tacos and Tampons. (horrible kotex-mex) #4: The customer service is incredible. I must assume that the one-star reviewers were exaggerating or lying or mad ex-girlfriends, but our service was great. Tina and Miles and Barry were friendly, informative, and funny. Miles gave me recommendations on pizza places, offered to personally show me how to turn on the hot tub so I wouldn't NutriBullet someone, and lent us boogie boards and chairs without making me sign anything or leave a deposit, license, or room #. Oh, that reminds me: Write me if you are interested in buying a gently used beach chair and boogie board. #5: The grounds are super lush, clean, and cool. Plus, the rectangular block-side grounds and properly lit paths make it easy to navigate past the different style rooms with outdoor ceiling fans and outdoor BBQ grills, with secure back gates that lead to parking or the village, and a cozy feel with nothing higher than a two-story. The center has a gas fireplace and fire pits for chilling out (or unchilling out) to the sounds of the waves. And, I'll give you a nickel if you can pet that stray cat that hangs out there. #6: The pool and hot tub change colors, from pink to red to dark blue, purple, light green, dark green, yellow, orange to pink again. That might not seem monumental, but it was cool. I felt like I was in Puff Daddy's hot tub. And, despite initial concerns, I did not come out looking like an Easter egg. However, I urinated later that night and my pee was PLAID. #7: Parking. Two reviewers complained about parking? Sure, there are only 7 or so spots in the lobby area, but the entire perimeter of the rectangular grounds is made up of parking spaces with 24 hour parking and back entrances. I think maybe these whiners were hoping to park IN their room?? #8: The lobby store. OK, no "Tums or milk" like one reviewer said (great party, lady) but everything is easy and rounded off- no crazy resort mark-ups, no tax, no receipts or lines. Bottle of water? A dollar. Sunscreen? 2 dollars. Ice? Free. Nice ice, baby. #9: Free fruit, danishes, donuts or cookies. All day. Not just in the morning. And they had the good kind out there- you aren't just stuck with Raisin. Stupid raisin. #10: Free use of boogie boards and chairs. First come, first serve. #11: Free wi-fi* #12: Full kitchen, even in cheapest room. #13: Air conditioning! #14: No attendants to avoid tipping for towels or pool chairs. And, most importantly, we like the value. The same price in a place like Santa Barbara puts you in something dirty, further from the beach, with no a/c. (See my Fiesta Inn review) Whether you get a deluxe room or not, they are roomy, functional, clean, temperature controlled, and quiet, with an ipod dock alarm clock and big comfortable bed. I'd give it more stars if I could. I don't understand the few bad reviews. The staff is great, and I cannot imagine them not taking care of a broken air conditioner or any thing else, seriously. I mean, I had the feeling they'd help me start peel an orange or help me with my homework. As for "no maid service", some days we see more maids than guests. At one point I thought it was a maid convention. Yes, the shower door was small, but who gives a shit? Maybe that person was pissed that she couldn't get her mobility scooter in. read more
