We stayed at the Beacon Grand in Union Square for 3 nights and had a very mixed experience. The highlight of our stay was the staff overall--the doormen and most of the hotel team were friendly, welcoming, and very accommodating. The exception was the staff member at the front desk during check-in, who came across as rude and seemed uninterested in engaging with us. The lobby itself is beautiful, open, and full of historic charm. We stayed in a Grand Suite on the 17th floor, which had great views and plenty of space. Unfortunately, the room did not meet our expectations. The bed was extremely soft and uncomfortable, and the duvet cover had a noticeable black stain with writing on it, which was disappointing. The bathroom was very small with no counter space, the shower setup was inconvenient with no shower door, and the pocket door did not fully close with an over inch gap on either side, leaving almost no privacy. We were also unaware of ongoing exterior construction before booking. The scaffolding outside and loud drilling during our stay were very disruptive, and a constant whistling wind noise from the windows made it difficult to relax. There were also smaller maintenance issues, including messy paintwork and a bathroom floor that did not appear properly cleaned. The overall experience simply didn't live up to the level of luxury I expected for the price paid. While there were certainly some positives, beautiful lobby, great location, and many wonderful staff members the quality of the accommodations, attention to detail, and overall experience fell short of what I anticipated from a hotel at this price point. read more

The Beacon Grand's biggest strength is its historic charm. The grand lobby and stunning staircase are absolutely worth seeing, and the updated rooms strike a nice balance between classic and modern. The Union Square location is near tons of bars, restaurants, shopping, and transit just steps away. A heads up for visitors: this is downtown San Francisco, so you'll see some unhoused people and occasionally catch a whiff of piss on the street. Unless you're staying on Nob Hill, that's pretty standard city life and not a reflection of the hotel itself. Overall, a beautiful historic hotel in a great location. Came here during Super Bowl weekend, which says a lot on its own. While the city was absolute chaos, this hotel felt like a little pocket of calm in the middle of everything. The atmosphere is beautifully designed--stylish, intentional, and somehow still relaxed. The bar was a huge highlight: really good drinks, well-made, and surprisingly affordable given the weekend and location. If you're hungry, there's food available too, which is a nice bonus if you want to settle in and not keep hopping around. The staff deserves a shoutout. Even though they were clearly busy, everyone was friendly, welcoming, and kept things moving without making it feel rushed or stressful. I've been here a couple of times now, and honestly, I'll probably keep coming back whenever I'm in the city. It's one of those places you go when you want to find a little serenity among the chaos--and that's not easy to come by, especially on a weekend like that. read more

We were fortunate to plan our sister get away in San Francisco and the best choice we made was to stay at the Beacon Grand. The hotel was centrally located for all our events. The room was very comfortable. The beds were like heavenly after a full day out. The staff was so pleasant and helped in every way. Shout out to Dan (best doorman ever). You have to go to the Starlite at the top for a beautiful view of the city. We will miss our room service coffee. Great coffee and food. We will be back. The hotel is nice. They tried with the remodel. Esp with such an old hotel. From a design perspective, some things were very tastefully done, such as the fixtures in the bathrooms, some of the updated furniture in the rooms, and updated fixtures and window treatments; however, you could see little things - or at least I could - such as paint on the side of a light switch (messy application - did not tape the switch down before painting)...paint on the floor where the floor boards meet the floor. Perhaps I am just being picky - but as a discerning traveler, I notice these things and these are little things to me, that make a difference. It does look like an older hotel messily remodeled vs a full remodel with attn to the utmost detail. There is ZERO counter space to put toiletries. I could not do my makeup easily - there was no counters to put them on. This was a BIG issue for me. There were no robes in the room and little storage area. There are also no glasses in the room (water glasses) or mugs. There is a coffee maker, but no mugs. :( There are paper cups though. The sheets are scratchy too, :( Now, let me get to the BIGGEST issue I have with this hotel - and probably why I will not stay here again for a business trip - and why I removed a full star. The Internet is HORRIBLE. I was doing coding tonight. I stayed here because there was the commitment of "High Speed" internet. It is anything butl I am sitting here at midnight trying to deploy something for tomorrow and should not be faced with intermittent outages, being kicked off the internet entirely....it's not acceptable. I am getting "network error occurred" and being kicked off internet on both my iphone and my laptop if I go into hibernation for more than 5 minutes. It's NOT acceptable for a "4-star hotel". On the positive side - the best part - is the service! The service in the downstairs restaurant was EXCELLENT, esp given the fact a couple of the dishes we ordered were not cooked correctly. They took them off the bill. The service team was truly apologetic and kind. I feel like the upgrades they did were not done to the most impeccable standards, but maybe I am just being picky. The front desk gentleman was also so nice! I appreciated the wonderful welcome by the front desk, The drink coupon and the friendly welcome and free upgrade. A nice touch! :) read more

The staff is exceptional and many we recognized from our stay the previous year. The location is perfect for exploring the city spots close by or afar. Was here last week for a meeting in one of their Meeting Rooms and the remake what used to be The Sir Francis Drake Hotel and the Beefeater Doormen of which the most iconic on was local boy Tom Sweeney. This was my first visit to the BG and they have done a wonderful job with interior as you walk up the grand Staircase with the lounge steps above the main floor as well as taking the elevator to The Starlight Room on the 21st Floor. Highly recommend having a drink at the lounge or The Starlight Room as well as staying here since it is located in the heart of the Union Square area. Note: rooms may be on the small side if my memory serves me correctly from when it was the Sir Francis Drake. read more

Our room was lovely, spacious, quiet, and comfortable. The only compliant: the shower head is way too high (even for my husband who is over 6'). The decor and city view feel fancy. The concoctions at the bar upstairs are novel and tasty -- including one "smoked" cocktail that mimics the fog rolling in by "pouring" an effervescent "smoke" into the drink. Visually engaging, I can't say that it had much impact on flavor. The restaurant was convenient but overpriced and not especially memorable. The location was perfect! Able to grab a cable car right out the front door! An easy walk (or trolly or metro ride) to the wharf, pier, Chinatown, or North Beach. Reasonably priced too! The room was clean, beautiful and comfortable. I loved the historic charm of wood floors and paneling in the elevators and gold fixtures in my bathroom. I did not realize that TripAdvisor makes you wait for three months before writing a second review. A couple of weeks ago there was a minor misunderstanding, I experienced at the Beacon grand that was quickly and very efficiently, thoughtfully, graciously and expansively rectified with a superior room an early check-in, a late checkout and wonderful dinner complementary of a very attentive staff and general manager. I'm thankful I spoke up and I'm even more thankful for the extravagant response I received. I have stayed here twice for staycations and loved it! In addition to its great location where you can walk around the city, the hotel itself is beautiful. You walk in and feel transported. The customer service is fantastic and the rooms are beautiful. You don't hear anyone else in their rooms (which is a common issue in hotels) but you do here whats going on in the city. We ordered room service each time and were surprised by how quickly it came and it was delicious. The convenience of the Starlite on the top floor for drinks and yummy appetizers is fantastic! You can either explore the city from the Beacon or you can never leave the hotel and still have a memorable experience. I am so glad we discovered this gem. read more

Step into a little bit of history as you enter the Beacon Grand Hotel off Powel Street in San Francisco. As you enter you are greeted by grand, twin, staircases. You feel as though you are stepping back in time with the beautiful architecture, wooden faced elevators, and ornate ceilings. The rooms are a good size, especially for the City. There is a bar on the lobby floor that offers hand crafted drinks(check out their twist on the classic Old Fashion or Expresso Martini). On the 21st floor is the most gorgeous view and full bar and perfectly staged areas for dinner. At night there is a live dj and lots of people hanging out. I absolutely love this hotel! A couple of tips. There is a parking garage around the corner for only $45 to park for 24 hrs. It closes at midnight and reopens at 5 am. Also, if you're staying at the hotel send someone the postcard provided in room. The staff will mail it for free just drop in the mail slots located in front of the elevators on each floor! read more

Came here to stay for a company on-site Monday through Thursday, which unfortunately was during the hotel strikes that were going on in SF. The Grand Beacon itself wasn't part of the strike but the Marriott hotel which my room faced was. The windows of the place are very thin which is to be expected from such an old place but I didn't go back to my room until past 10 PM each night because that was when the sound from across the street would stop and it would pick back up at 7 AM in the morning. I know that there's nothing that they could have done in regards to the strike from across the street and my experience at the hotel was otherwise pleasant. They also give you a complimentary drink card for a drink at the bar that's across from check-in. The shower was fine, it was interesting that the head was not adjustable because it was kind of high which led to somewhat low water pressure. I was at the end of the hall which I think might have been the room next to the water heater because when I took a shower I was able to get it hot enough, but I had co-workers that were in the middle of the hall on the same floor that said that they had to take cold showers because their water wasn't getting hot enough. read more

OMG this place was the right pick for us! Like in the heart of the city! We couldn't ask for a better location because we were able to walk around the area, Starbucks was next door, across the street was a Walgreens and it was very walkable to stores. We actually were able to ride the trolley for the first time because it was on our street which was pretty cool! The inside of the hotel was beautiful, very grand just like the name beacon grand. We stayed in room 1708 and the beds were comfortable but the only con was the bathroom-it was too small. Like one at a time and no where to put your toiletries-not enough space. The staff were really nice, welcoming and helpful. Overall I would definitely come back here and stay but I would not share the space/room with other people. The room I had would be perfect for one because of the bathroom or with a spouse but even then because of the bathroom I would rather have the space to myself. I love the hotels location. It is next to Starbucks, Union Square mall, next to Walgreens. it is beautiful. it was built since 1928. The service was wonderful. I would have loved to get their parking cost a bit lowered. I also think that menu should be available for dinner at 4pm. As for the room- they need more water bottles. I had the pleasure of staying here for 4 nights for a work retreat. What a beautiful hotel and room! The room was a little bit small but clean, classy and comfortable. The bed was super comfy. Be warned, the bathroom did not have any counter space. The hotel is conveniently located in Union Square, near public transit and cute coffee shops and restaurants. I love that the hotel provides a free postcard that you can send to your friends and family! Staff overall was professional and courteous. The parking is crazy expensive ($~75/night) so I parked at a nearby parking lot. Would definitely stay here again if I can afford it. read more

I stayed at the Beacon last summer and I'm still thinking about the amazing experience I had! My ex & I, who I stayed with, are no longer together and I still feel the need to write a review! It started when we first arrived from the airport & made our way to the hotel. I left my phone in the uber & didn't realize until he had drove away. The bellmen at the door were the nicest and most caring people I have ever met. They made it their mission to make sure I got my phone back, they did everything in their power to help me. Luckily I was able to retrieve it with their help! That was my first experience with this hotel and it left an everlasting impression. Everyone else we encountered at the hotel was top tier. The staff who work there make the hotel what it is. I did not speak to a single staff member who wasn't providing 5 star service. I seriously would come back only because of the employees. The rooms were nice! Not super big but it's San Francisco & we didn't spend that much time in the room. The bathroom was nice (we got a room with a tub), bed was super comfortable, and the room was spotless. All the main things I care about. The restaurant inside the hotel!!!! Definitely check it out for a good meal but be warned it is on the expensive side. My only complaint was that their room service menu online was not up to date & that caused some confusion. But the hotel was relatively new last summer so I'm assuming they got it all figured out! If I'm ever in San Francisco, I would stay here again in a heartbeat!!! read more

Got to enjoy the Beacon Grand for a few nights stay due to work. And really loved the experience. The welcome and check in process was pleasant and seamless. Got a room on the 8th floor. Not much of view though, but what can you expect in the middle of San Francisco. I also got to order in one of the evenings from the restaurant and it was delicious! The whole cauliflower and the mushroom side was so delicious I was still craving for more! Overall the location was beautiful, central to many of the main sights and food from the restaurant room service was delicious! Would love to come back! read more

This place deserves 4.5 stars for its beautiful structure and great architecture! Very elegant and eye catching...The room was nice but the bath tub specially the shower head was real headache! It was very hard to take shower...The bedroom was little bit small in compare to what we saw in pictures...It seems they remodeled but still price wise, it didnt make sense! Too expensive for what we got! The front desk was very friendly but the hidden cost ruined half of the fun! I prepaid the room and when i came out it was $125 extra charge! So many charges so make sure if you want use valet know that they have one of the most expensive fee $72! For oversized vehicle it was $82. First hour $12, and additional 1/5 hour $4. Also they charged me for urban fee something like that! There is no pool or hot tub in this hotel and the restaurant inside very gorgeous! Overall, overpriced but if i knew before it was understandable but i don't like surprises like this. Dont get me wrong, We enjoyed our trip and everyone in this place was very welcoming and friendly but that bill wasnt desirable! Be careful with extra fees! read more

First off; the hotel has amazing old charm, and the staff is AWESOME! We were greeted by Alma. She was not only friendly, but made us feel at home. She was so kind and took very good care of us. We spent four nights at the Beacon Grand this May and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. We booked a King Bed Suite, which was a corner room on the 19th floor. Three large windows provided lots of light and a gorgeous panoramic of the city (when the fog allowed). It was technically not a suite because it was open concept rather than two separate rooms. However the room is double sized and seating area is encompassed a couch and two accent chairs flanking a cocktail table. The TV was large and supported connecting your phone to it. Streaming from Spotify was seamless but if you like a more complete sound with bass you may want to bring a portable speaker as the TV, like most flat screens, has just average speaker quality. The bathroom had an accessible roll in shower, which was great but the layout of the shower was not well designed for wheelchair use - the soap/shampoo/conditioner element was bolted high to the wall, out of arm's reach. The staff, did, however, bring an additional set for accessible use. The redesign of the hotel is gorgeous and exchanges the red of Sir Francis Drake for a rich putty blue. The penthouse Starlite bar received a similar makeover and is a wonderful way to wrap up an evening with stellar cocktails. The lobby bar has limited but delicious options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The staff was extremely friendly, and the Union Square neighborhood is brimming with excellent bars and restaurants. I would like to give a public shout out to Beacon Grand. I went tonight for Thanksgiving Dinner and I am so happy with everything - the service, the food, the ambience, everything. The food for Thanksgiving was, in my opinion, fantastic. All of the usual cravings were there - the most savory turkey I have had (brined and cooked perfectly) with gravy, cross rib (translation: prime rib), porchetta, and lots of entrees and sides including cioppino, truffle risotto, pasta with a nice sauce, salads, deviled eggs, and more. I loved the ambience. Sitting at a round table in a beautiful ballroom with a buffet of food that was genuinely delicious was the perfect Thanksgiving for me. We had a tableful of friends with wonderful food and great service. Shout out to Tessa, who held the table with many drinks and requests, with a smile on her face the entire time. I really really loved this place and can't wait to go back. If I have to wait until next Thanksgiving so be it; I have something to look forward to for a year. Bravo. read more

My husband and I had a great two-night staycation at the Beacon Grand. A great location in Union Square that's steps away from many of the staple places one would one want to visit in this area of the city. This hotel has recently been remodeled and the work completed has done a good job of maintaining the charming environment/decor while offering a modern facelift to the rooms and common area. All of the staff we interacted with were welcoming, hospitable, kind, and extremely helpful whenever we needed something or had questions. An all around awesome experience. As noted above, the rooms had a beautiful, classy vibe from their remodel. As others mentioned, the standard rooms are a little small, but as someone who travels often and has stayed in hotels throughout the country in major cities, this room was much roomier than expected. They've constructed the rooms in a way that utilizes space well to ensure all of the necessities of a hotel room were present. There was a lounging chair and end table, tv with dresser, a nice sized desk to work, and a beautiful bathroom. There were ample charging ports and electric outlets for all of our devices and electronics. We had a room with two queen beds that overlooked Union Square. The view couldn't be beat, especially at night and during the holidays. Some quick facts about the hotel: - it's dog friendly - the parking is valet only. It is pricey, but expected, in a city that generally has little free parking options especially in this part of the city. Our stay was relaxing, fun, and we felt safe inside the hotel. Though we are local to San Francisco, without a doubt, we would return to the Beacon Grand if we ever needed a place to stay in this area of the city or wanted to take a little overnight trip. read more

This place would have been 4 stars if not for my recent credit card charge and the valet. I gotta hold myself back from going full Karen on this place, but I'm most likely not staying here ever again. My girlfriend and I wanted to take a trip up to SF for thanksgiving weekend. We found the beacon grand for a pretty good deal so we decided to go for it. Picking this place for the location was a complete mistake on my end. It was so difficult to get around and there was simply no other options than to use the valet. Even accessing the valet area was so much more difficult than I had imagined. If you're gonna be shopping in Union square then it's great, but otherwise, you should absolutely avoid it. Super touristy and hard to get around. The valet fee, which was 76 dollars PER DAY, is the most ridiculous price for valet I've ever heard of. I'm from LA so it's not like I haven't paid a lot for parking prior to this instance. I guess SF is on another level. Ridiculous. The rooms were much smaller than I had expected. Nicely decorated and comfy bed/pillows, but it felt a little cramped. The bathroom also had one of those showers that doesn't have a sliding door and is half open so water would just spray everywhere ??? Dumb design. The overall vibe of this place is really nice and elegant. It's pretty clean overall and service was not bad, which is why I didn't give it 1 star. The bar was also a really nice spot, but drinks were pretty pricey as wel, including more fees on top of the drinks. But the valet fees plus the "urban destination fee" which I think was around 35 dollars per day really irked me. If you're super wealthy and don't care how much your paying, then disregard this whole review, but as someone who is not (yet, at least), it was quite annoying. All together, the valet fees plus the extra fees they added came out to be almost how much the whole reservation for the weekend cost!! We are dorks so we actually picked this place because it used to be called the Francis Drake hotel and we love the Uncharted video games series. IYKYK. Anyway, the lobby was pretty but the room itself was just ok. It seemed really old so if you're into historic places this would be it. For me, I'd prefer a place with a real bathroom door so the entire room didn't have to smell it if I took a poops. Also the water temperature was way high and heats up quick so washing my hands was an adventure I'd like to not repeat. read more
