Terrible store. I bought a drill that was recommended by the manager, and it turned out to cost TWICE what it costs online. On top of it, it was defective. When I tried to return it, all of the sudden this item was "final sale", even though it was not on sale and nowhere does it say it was final sale. My recent experience with the staff at Beacon Paint and Hardware (especially Bruce) is worthy of a sincere acknowledgement of their service and professionalism. I had purchased a widow air conditioner unit from them just over a month ago. Unfortunately the unit was defective and the manufacturer was unwilling to replace the unit. The staff at Beacon Paint and Hardware went to my defense and worked with me to have the unit replaced in very short order. Purchasing from local vendors on the UWS has its advantages. Moving is stressful. Repainting a wall on your own because the building's maintenance person did not ever call you back and you have ugly spackled holes in your wall is extra stressful. Finding out that the only place in the neighborhood that sells the same paint color that your apartment uses is closing in 10 minutes is uber stressful. This was my situation. I called Beacon and asked if they had the paint I needed, and the man on the phone said yes. I then told him I was going to sprint from my apartment to get there before closing and asked if he could wait for me if I get there a couple minutes late. To this, he responded, "No." Plain and simple. I double checked that I heard right, because in my experience with customer service the phrase "no" tends to come accompanied with some words of apology or at least consolation: "I'm sorry, but we don't stay open late," or "So sorry, but we can't. But we open at 10 tomorrow." Alas, he once again said, "No. We close at 5." So I sprinted and got there before 5:00. They had exactly what I needed (the reason this is not a 1 star review). After purchasing my paint I spoke to Bruce, the owner, about what had happened on the phone. Bruce's response was in defense of the store's closing time. I told him that I understood that they have a closing time and that a "no" answer would have been completely fair had it been delivered as a slightly softer blow to my already stressful situation. To that, he said, "Well, you know, my guys can't do everything perfectly." He was not rude but not receptive at all. I was impressed by the selection at Beacon but this inattentiveness to the most basic customer service was not pleasant and was enough to deter me from ever going back. What a shame. read more

I own a business and used to go to the HD on 23rd street. About 2 months ago a friend told me that I should check out Beacon and made an introduction to the owner, Bruce. At first, I was a little hesitant, mostly because I felt that they were inconvenient being that my business is in Union Sq and they are on the UWS and also I was under the impression that HD would have better prices. I decided to give them a shot. I am SO HAPPY that I did. Bruce and the team really know their stuff. I don't even have to go to the store. I call or email and place my order and they bring it down to my office. Their pricing on some stuff is comparable and others is better. The most important thing is the service they provide. It makes dealing with Beacon an ABSOLUTE PLEASURE. BEACON PAINT AND HARDWARE is my absolute choice. read more

It's been happening for years and now reached the point where you can do better at any other Benjamin Moore affiliate in Manhattan. Case in point: went to buy a gallon of BMoore Stix Bonding Primer, which is $55 at the BMoore on Broadway & 102nd (and $59 on Amazon). Beacon quoted $249.00 -- then had the balls to say this was a great deal because it was the contractor price and the retail was $300. A hit or miss with this place! Although they sell a lot of useful hardware items, sometimes they are nice and sometimes they aren't. They don't EVER give suggestions or recommendations of other places if they don't sell it - which is super annoying if you have zero knowledge on construction. I view this aspect as bad customer service, so I use this place as my last resort. Also, they open super late on Sundays (11am) for being a HArdware store because workers come in at 8am. I was helped by Steven who was helpful with paint selection. I ended up going there the next day to buy more paint. I called him and my paint was ready for pick up. I bought a window AC unit this past weekend and had a WONDERFUL experience. This is my first time going to Beacon after the new management took over, and they did not disappoint -- just as good as the old management (which was always excellent). I live on the first floor of an apartment building so my windows have bars over them with no AC cutout, so I didn't know if a window AC would fit. I stopped by Beacon to ask a question about it, and Angel, a great guy, immediately said he would come to my apartment to look at the window and see what he could do. He measured everything and then told me about an AC unit that would fit, and then immediately delivered and installed the unit, even getting special plexiglass to fit my unusual window. I would recommend Beacon Hardware (and especially Angel, if you need help with installation or other handyman services) to anyone and everyone. read more

I live right across the street, and I always try to shop locally. For example, I buy groceries at Fairway (and before it closed down, Westside Market); I get pet food from a family owned store on 76th etc. I've given this place numerous chances, and *every* time, I end up having a negative experience, and it's mainly due to the arrogant, dismissive, inattentive staff. Chief offender: the bald guy in his 60s. I'll give you the two most recent examples: 1) Last month, I went in looking for some netting and cable ties. I had a specific question, so I waited at the counter whilst the bald guy served someone. After that, for TEN FULL MINUTES, he (and two other employees) just wandered up and down ignoring me, and deliberately refused to make eye contact. If any of them gave a damn, someone would've enquired as to whether I needed assistance. After being ignored, I left. 2) Several days ago, I showed the bald guy a photo on my phone of the aerator on my sink. I asked him if he had a tool in stock that I could use to remove it. After looking at the photo for a millisecond, he responded: 'NO', and that was it. No other explanation. No attempt to be helpful or make any suggestions, just 'NO'. This was a HARDWARE STORE filled with tools, and he had nothing that could remove a THREADED BOLT?! Are you f***ing kidding me? I asked again to clarify, and he said 'we have nothing to remove that'. And that was it. So, as I was walking out, I noticed a wall of tools with about 20 different types of plier, which was the type of tool I was looking for. However, at this point, I'd already made up my mind never to come here again, so I left and walked 10 blocks to Lowes and bought a pair of pliers there. This place is an absolute joke. Horrible customer service, and it all stems from smugness, arrogance, and complacency. They've been on the UWS for a long time so they clearly feel like they don't have to put in the effort anymore. I could be giving my money to this place several times a week, but I trek to Lowes or Bed, Bath, and Beyond just to avoid the horrible service. They should be more attentive to customers, especially locals, or risk alienating potential long-term customers like me. There's just no need for this level of unfriendliness and poor service. It's a disgrace. Beacon will eventually go the same way as many other (far superior) local shops: into the crapper, and I will not shed a single tear. In fact, I hope it does close down; they deserve it, and when (not IF, but WHEN) they go out of business, they'll have no one to blame but themselves. STOP BEING SO ARROGANT AND DISMISSIVE TO CUSTOMERS. If you can't handle the business of being attentive, then RETIRE ALREADY. The UWS deserves better than this. Oh, and P.S. I had some keys cut here a couple of months ago. Quelle surprise, due to the shoddy workmanship, they didn't fit my lock. I went here last Saturday to purchase paint and I will never go back. I was treated so poorly and spoken to so rudely that I literally left in tears. When I called ahead, I was told they wouldn't be able to match my paint but I bravely ventured in anyway, hoping to find something at least close. Upon entering the store, a surly bald man asked if I needed help. He then proceeded to condescendingly explain to me that of course he could match my paint and made me feel like I was an idiot for ever thinking otherwise, even though is coworker explicitly told me it was impossible. Despite his mean attitude and general rudeness, I was still feeling relieved that there was an answer to my problem. He asked a few questions that I did not know the answer to so I returned to my office down the street to get the final info he needed to finish my order. When I returned, the Bald Man was gone and another bald man asked how he could help. I explained that I had been working with his co-worker and had returned to follow up with him. He looked at me and dryly said, "Well that doesn't help me at all." Full eye contact. No smile. No hint of a joke. Taken aback by his aggressive tone, I tried again to explain that my order was complicated and it would be easier for everybody if I were to just wait for his coworker and finish the final details with him and pay. Before I could finish my sentence, the Meaner Bald Man barked at me saying,"I don't know WHO helped you. I wasn't there, ok?! Just tell me what you want." I told him that actually, for the record, he had been standing right next to us and then I attempted to describe the Original Bald Man in hopes that he would relent and finally grab him from the back, but was interrupted, yet again. As I had been speaking at the time, I did not hear what he was saying. Funny how that works. Asking him to repeat himself resulted in him fully shouting his question at me. By now, everyone in the store (several male employees/ male customers) was staring at us, silently watching the Meaner Bald Man loudly berate and humiliate me. When I began to choke up, the Meaner Bald Man then yelled in my face "Why are you upset?! I'm trying to help you." Unable to hold back my tears any longer, I began to cry and told him he was being incredibly rude. He screamed "I'm trying to help you!!!!" at my back as I walked out of the store and away from his verbal abuse. I cannot fathom why anybody would treat a customer like this, let alone another human being. Nobody deserves to be yelled at, interrupted, talked down to, intimidated, or humiliated, especially not when that person is actively trying to give you their money. The condescending, unfriendly, misogynistic, and just plain mean Beacon Hardware employees have clearly not progressed in the 119 years they have been open.They have lost my company's business permanently and I advise anybody, especially every woman, who wants to be treated with respect to follow suit and shop somewhere else. When the painter opened it, cleared it had never been shaken. With a bank and a Starbucks on every other corner, the Upper West Side has grown increasingly corporate over the last decade. But a few Mom & Pops remain, and Beacon Hardware is among the best of them. All the dudes there are down-to-earth, a few seem to be lurking below ground and the combined effect is excellent customer service, a few laughs and something to learn each time you visit. If they don't have whatever oddball thing you're looking for, they'll get it. If you don't know what you're doing, they'll try not to laugh at you while they really help you minimize the damage. read more

This is the best hardware store in the neighborhood. And they are better than any of the big box stores in other neighborhoods. I always find what I need, and the staff is ALWAYS helpful and friendly. I am a woman and I have never felt ignored or pandered to. My last visit was on last Sunday. There was a gap between our baseboards and our floor and yucky bugs were getting into the apartment through that gap. My husband is NOT a DIY person, so it was up to me to fix the issue, unless we wanted to pay through the nose for a contractor (we didn't). I went to Beacon and told them the problem. The employee who helped me asked how big the gap was (1/4 inch) and then suggested I use latex & silicone caulk to seal the gap. He showed me how to use the caulk gun, cut off the tip of the caulk for me, showed me how to puncture the tube once I was ready to go, and explained the whole process. He told me I could absolutely do this by myself and gave me confidence. Guess what? I did it! And it looks great! So now I am going to try tackling re-caulking our tub. And I will absolutely be going to Beacon Paint & Hardware for supplies for that project. I often hear people complaining that the UWS is becoming Soho-ized. We continue to lose the one of a kind stores that add character to the neighborhood as rents rise and the corporate stores are able to pay the sky-high rents. But guess what!? If you don't patronize the mom & pop stores, they will eventually go out of business. If you DO shop local and shop small, there is good chance that the stores that make our neighborhood interesting and different will be able to survive. So who cares if a hammer is 50 cents more at Beacon than it is at Home Depot? You are paying for service -the staff at Beacon take time to help you, unlike the impossible to locate staff at Home Depot. Plus shopping locally owned businesses keeps money in the community- not in the pockets of shareholders all over the country. read more

I have always found what I needed when I needed it for a price that worked out given the variables. The staff is fine, they are not casino greeters but this is not Harrahs. In response to some of the complaints I have read: 1)Convenience costs money. Several have complained about the high prices compared to big box stores and internet. Stocking a small number of a large variety of items is expensive. A small store in a residential area has far higher expenses relative than Home Depot. Comparing to online prices without considering postage, delay and overhead is apples and oranges. 2)Adulthood involves responsibility. One reviewer complained that the store did stay open late for her, that they should have since she was so stressed out. I don't know where to begin with this, other than to say fail to plan = plan to fail and retailers are not caretakers. read more
