Just OK. This was one of my reasons for traveling to NYC and I was a little disappointed. The store is cramped and overwhelming and it didn't feel like any rhyme or reason for the pricing. A lot of items were priced as "$X.94." So like, "45.94," etc. Most of the items were way out of the price range I would pay for secondhand clothing. I can go home to Philly to a similar store and buy the same pieces for way less. I just was not blown away, even though I did think some things were cute, there was nothing I was willing to part with my hard-earned money for. Not for the prices I saw. Geesh. read more

I had an emergency need for a dress shirt to wear to an event. I am a frequent flyer at beacons closet. I RACED across town to get there before closing, arrived at 7:50. I was not allowed to enter. I clearly expressed I was looking for one specific item and could race through in 60 seconds or less. I was denied. I caught the eye of another worker. Surely she would remember me, I've been spending thousands of dollars here for 10+ years. She averted her eyes. Sadly I can't ever come back out of pure vengeance. read more

I was speaking with an employee that was assisting me with something in the store. But I answered/responded with confusion since I felt I was unclear to them which wasn't what I wanted to do to them. However, their tone was impatient and absolutely rude to me when I was just confused about something. Very disrespectful and unprofessional!!! I've been coming to this location since my fashion college years since they showcase a variety of garments which are neatly organized based on color, season, and textile. The prices have changed throughout the years since there are more high-end pieces. But some of those pieces are clearly dirty, worn out, or missing buttons / damaged zippers. I have heard it before, but since I go to the one in greenpoint and they usually take most of my vintage and or perfect condition stuff, I always just get a credit also, I thought as I was over there I'd bring a bag... big mistake... not sure what they are buying but there's stuff with moth holes and stains yet they don't take your stuff... I don't think they even went through as it was folded the exact same way I had it...hmm. Stopped by yesterday and it was kind of a zoo with a steady flow of people weaving through the very limited aisle space. Found a few unique things but was thrown off by how expensive items were. I guess I didn't expect vintage stores to cost so much if not a designer piece. If you want to sell items, proceed to the back and you'll need to give your ID. You have the option to drop items and come back or wait 15 min and they decide with they want to buy. I was told they are really full and need to clear items during the current sale. So they only take very unique pieces. Don't try to sell your used items from stores like gap, target, h&m. They won't offer anything. Kinda surprised since I saw pretty worn down Nikes and other heels that were very used. While the stuff I brought in wasn't a high end brand, the clothes were in great condition. Overall, items were clean and organized nicely based on color. However, very cramped space making it hard when it's crowded. The staff could be nicer with greeting people or if you want to sell. Don't expect that warm hello at the door. They have fitting rooms. Didn't see a restroom. read more

Walking into Beacon's Closet felt like walking into a cool kids closet. The music was incredible, it was filled with students, and had racks and racks of clothes to pick from. This is a spot you could spend over an hour in. They offer a variety of clothes sorted by type (top, dress, pants, etc.). A lot of the tops are color coordinated. They sell really fun jewelry here too. You can tell something is new if it has .50 cents at the end. This spot was crowded when I went and it was a bit hard to squeeze through the rows of clothes and people at one point. You can find some designer items here. A lot of the clothes are priced at newer clothes prices, but I think this is because they go by label. You're able to find some cool designer brands if you're looking for something like that. They also had a huge shoe rack. There are several dressing rooms and although it is packed, you can get one relatively quickly. On my visit I tried on a lot of different things, but ended up leaving with one cute top that cost about $18. They charge you about .50 cents for a paper bag or $3 for a reusable one. The workers are super rude especially if you're selling clothes there. I get it, you don't wanna be working, but unfortunately we all have to- so just be a nice (ISH) person. Selling clothes anywhere never gives u much money- so I'm not upset about the low value they gave me, but it took 3 hours (lineup was busy that day). They estimated 1.5-2 hr... ok. 3 hours was crazy though and when I came into check they were taking their sweet sweet time laughing hanging out going through my stuff. This is an example of a brand that self-sabotaged out of greed. Beacon's Closet was a much adored vintage & used clothes store. People loved it. And it was very popular. So what did they do with all that popularity ? They hiked their prices up two, three, four times. And I guess people stopped coming. And their in-store staff especially - W13th Street - became miserable and super rude. And now what you've got is a very sad shopping experience. Lousy stuff for ridiculously high prices, (laughably high) sold to you by sour, grumpy, obnoxious people. It's awful. And sadly it'll go out of business soon. A very unfortunate example of poor business practices. Give it a miss. Go to a hundred other great places in the city. Picture the scene: weary and wary Bostonian in NYC for a wee break, looking for adventure, and to perhaps prop up her wardrobe in whatever way possible. I went to Macy's, and then to the flagship shops, with a pocket full of money, and nothing tickled me into buying, until I hit Beacon's Closet. I regularly shop thrift whenever, and where ever I can. Somehow, finding racks full of trousers, shirts, jackets, all the same, seems to make me itch (not to mention the incumbent issues of precious resources and labor used to make garments that are literally "throw away fashion"), and perhaps I was relieved that I found nothing in the Village, or along 5th, or other destinations that slaked my thirst for something unique and new... ...Until I tripped into Beacons Closet. Mind you, I only visited one location, but still, I found about twenty items that quelled that itch. I walked with four items. The total bill was under 50.00, and even if that's considered high by some thrifters standards, consider this: The items are well edited; They are clean, and in good condition; the store I visited was organized, and it was easy to find things in the category you were searching within (jackets, jeans, blazers, whatevs); no weird smell like many second hand shops; and they also offered some really cool and interesting accessories to enhance your outfit(s). While it may seem blasé to someone from NYC, for some of us who live in the hinterlands of New England, you are the Carnaby Street of NYC. Very organized. The racks are colored coded which is super super useful. However, the selection skews mainly fast fashion to a lot of super vintage items. Overall, I would come here to look for unique pieces to draw inspiration from and not necessarily wear. I didn't get lucky and walked out with nothing. read more

Would not sell at this location. Cross roads and Buffalo exchange are kinder in general. Dropped off a buy around 5 pm on Saturday, waited in store for 30 mins, checked status, was told to check back. I came back into the store around 7 pm to check again as I received at text that they were "ready to begin buy" the person working told me mine was not ready. I went home as they closed at 8 pm and never received another text that my buy was ready, waiting, paused, or done. I return Monday to find out that their policy is to donate everything not picked up at EOD. That's a fair policy had any one told me, especially since it was near closing when I checked on my buy? I understand and respect policies, but less so when your employees are unhelpful and the language you use on the only communication channel is not clear. I was given 10% off my next purchase as compensation. Just be more informative and less pretentious, I'm certain they will be selling the lot of clothes they didn't "buy" from me and claim to have donated. Go to cross roads read more

What a fancy thrift store. This is definitely a place to go when looking for designer second hand clothing. We arrived to a line waiting to get in. The place is pretty tight on space once inside and with covid, I'm sure they must limit patrons. They have a great assortment of second hand items as well as boutique style new accessories. This was a very confusing place. There seemed to be no reason to how clothing was organized. There were racks and racks of mixed items in mixed sizes, making it VERY hard to find something of any particular size. Also, the prices were high, like $40 for a random solid colored t-shirt in crappy shape. Adding to the confusion was the fact that the place was crowded with people pushing through the racks. All of this made me wonder if Beacon's Closet is entirely hype. Are all of these customers here because they believe they're supposed to be? If so, then I guess they deserve 5 stars for marketing and 1 for the authentic experience. The security guard by the front door was the only employee I witnessed interacting with customers in a friendly way. At this point I am convinced that the terrible "bedside manner" that Beacon's Closet is infamous* for is actually part of some (genius) branding by the company. I've lived in NYC for 14 years now and every couple of years I stop by and do a temperature check on how cool I've become--or how cool my stuff has become to merit being bought. That or the buyers are incredibly exhausted and can't be bothered with bare-minimum niceties, even if it's as simple as explaining some basic rules on how they operate, "No, we don't hold things overnight," or "Do you want to know how much we priced each item or not? Otherwise if you leave them you'll only know the total. [Snark]" Bottom line, be alert, be ready, and don't ask too many questions. This was a horrible experience. I brought in 2 bags of designer clothes in excellent condition. Kate spade, Steve Madden, vintage pieces, etc. They made me leave it overnight even though I came in early, and when I got there to pick up it was clear they didn't really assess anything at all just because they didn't feel like it. They were super rude to me, told me "yea, we're just going to pass on everything". Mean kids vibe, huge waste of time and on top of having to lug everything back, they took some of my items and just didn't comp me for them. Avoid for sure. I'd also avoid buying if you're into making sure you only purchase from ethical companies! read more

The prices are slightly more fair then other Manhattan thrifts depending on what you're looking at, but I did snag a juicy couture jacket and a coachtopia hoodie. Beautiful clothes keep me coming back, but the staff is so pretentious and arrogant, it makes it a very unpleasant, even humiliating experience at times. Maybe it's ageism (I am 51), but even when I am with my eighteen years old daughter, it can be bad. But again, we found some real treasures at Beacon's, for reasonable prices. read more

I came here on a Saturday to drop off a box of clothes, and I had such an annoying/horrible experience. I will never come back here. 1) The music was blaring, and it was very crowded and hot (in January). 2) I dropped off this box (including some expensive items) at 3pm. They told me it was a 2-hour wait for processing and that I wold receive a text when it was done/ready for pickup. I called at 5:30pm, and, after much confusion on their part, they said they accidentally skipped my box and would do it immediately and send me a text. I called again at 7:30pm, and after more confusion, they said they went through it but didn't select anything, and I still had to come by 8pm if I wanted to take back my items. I never received any texts, and I spoke to at least one very rude employee. My guess is that they lost my box. Sell your clothes elsewhere! read more

Manhattan store has huge selection, but be aware - some items have visible damage and even more items have damage/durty spots not immediately visible. The lighting in the store does not help when inspecting merchandase. I just bought a top there with lining all nasty dirty. Beacon's Closet is not a cheap thrift shop and I believe it must follow some sanitary guidelines, which was not the case with the item I purchased. read more

Raced from the UWS to get there before closing (which is listed at 8pm). Got there at 7:40 due to a delayed train but were so excited that we made it in time to at least shop a bit, only to find the door locked. We saw a man inside who opened the door and told us that no, we could not come in because although they DO close at 8, they "don't let anyone come in at this time" and 8 is when they ask shoppers to leave, not when they actually close (?) Will NOT be coming back, and will no longer recommend to friends in the future. read more

They donated my clothes without consent. They asked me if I wanted clothes donated in case they decide to not purchase them and I said NO. They texted me same day to go pick up the clothes - without a note that if I do not pick it up they will donate the clothes. I could not go same day and went day after. This is illegal and please make sure to be super careful. Manager tells me the policy is on the receipt written with the tiny shift that nobody would notice. read more

Fantastic quality of items in this store worth searching through. Shoes were leather, bags were updated and the prices were reasonable. A great selection of bags, sneakers, boots, bras, shoes, fur jackets and coats. I find the items in the store are worthy of your time they do need a bigger store. The one in Brooklyn is nice as well. I often find nice dresses of all sizes and quality. The customer service is polite. I was able to sell my items and use that money to purchase another bag that I added to my collection for my daughter's to shop in my closet. The mens' clothing was nice as well and their shoes. Whenever I'm in the area I get my bubble tea and shop. Nice finds. Worth my Time and money I am hardly disappointed. read more

I've tried to sell clothes at this location several times. The tragically hip buyer took one look at me and decided I couldn't possibly have anything of value to them. They took out the clothing and without looking at them put them back. Then told me I had fast fashion. They swore they saw something from mango in my bag. I had no mango. I had Alice and Olivia, Donald Pliner boots (worn just once), brand new biker boots from Anthropology, Stewart Weitzman clogs, and free people skirts. . . but they couldn't be bothered with actually looking at the clothes. Too involved with their epic conversation. dont bother selling clothes unless you too are tragically hip and enjoy making other people feel less about themselves. read more

Would never recommend anyone to sell to them. Gave them a whole suitcase and bag full of clothes and shoes that were in perfect condition and in season with styles relevant to today. They accepted none of it. Would bet everything that because I told them to donate the rest, that they kept some to sell on the racks. Hope the 100% profits were worth this review.... read more
