Ok, let me start off by saying this place has the greatest variety of vintage t-shirts I've ever seen. I appreciate that they categorized accordingly including a section dedicated to country music, WWE, hip-hop and more. With that said the price is absurdly high, with a Janet jackson and NSYNC tee for $150. If I was rich sure, but that price is too steep. The workers aren't attentive or helpful at all. Nice place to browse, appreciate the great sourcing of vintage tees. TLDR; excellent variety of vintage tees that are not affordable. $150 is the average price. Metropolis Vintage you've blown my socks off! There was a super special event this weekend at the famous, vintage, t-shirt connoisseur shop, Metropolis Vintage this Saturday that could not be missed. "John Holmstrom" would be doing an in store signing and the first 50 people would receive a FREE t-shirt! John Holmstrom is known for his cover illustrations for PUNK Magazine and the illustrated Ramones cover of "Road to Ruin". I had no option but to wake my lazy butt up and mosey my way to the East Village by 1pm. I made it with two minutes to spare. For the signing event there was a huge collection of vintage Cramps and Ramones shirts to drool over that were not for sale. Totally cool! The line wasn't insane. I was in luck for a free shirt. I also scored some free buttons and stickers. I got a couple autographed PUNK Magazines for my personal collection. I was really wanting the Ramones map signed but they were hand printed and numbered and therefore earned the $90 price tag. I'm happy there was still stuff people could buy that might not have deep pockets. Holmstrom was a total sweetheart and signed everything for me, even the t-shirt. Drew "fadedignity" was dj-ing the event with some sick tunes. The crowd slowly arrived since it was pouring rain. The staff was chill, cool and suave in keeping everyone happy and responding to all the insane questions that came their way. Like "why are these categorized by band"? I mean ...how else should they be categorized. People here are the same music nerds that are buying records. They want their band shirts is similar order. Also the peeps working here are in bands which is an added bonus to the Metropolis Vintage experience. They're tons of great shirts but you will be warned that there is a price to pay. These shirts are curated or rare and with those descriptions you have to show the green. The Bo Diddley "You don't know Diddley" had to be one of the best! This place is no secret and I hope it continues to do what it does best and throw in some rad events while they're at it. Keep on, keeping on! Stay far away from this incredibly discriminatory and unprofessional store manager Rome! My boyfriend and I were shopping in the store as we have many times before. He tried on a sweatshirt (right where we took it off the rack) and while he was trying it on from at least 20ft away, Rome was asking the employee helping us, "where did he get that, it was supposed to be behind the register, we aren't selling that," and the employee helping us responded that we had just taken it off the rack. When we got up to the register Rome was there and said the sweatshirt which was tagged as $65, was mistagged. He went on and on about how the price marked wasn't correct and put it back behind the register away from us, when in fact he just didn't want to sell us the sweatshirt. The service was so shocking, and outright illegal and discriminatory. When I informed him that the law in NYS stated that the prices on mistagged items still need to be honored, he became confrontational and called my boyfriend and I stupid, in the store full of people. He was incredibly unprofessional, loud, argumentative and was just behaving like a child. When I insisted on still purchasing the sweatshirt, he ripped the tag off and then charged me $150. After the fact when I showed him the law on the NY State .gov website he looked shocked. After spending $5000 in the store at the last store's pop-up not even 2 weeks ago, I cannot believe this is the level of disrespect, discrimination and outright unprofessionalism received today. I will never be returning to this store and will most definitely pass on this information to friends, many of which have actually have made complaints about this very same manager being rude and unprofessional in the past. read more

Literally the most overpriced vintage clothing store I've ever been too. None of the clothing they sell is worth what they sell it for. Despite the amount of inventory and clutter in the store, the owner is extremely price stiff as well. I find him to be abrasive and rude with his customers. Customer: "Will you do $30 for this t-shirt?" Owner: "NNNo" Customer: "Ugh, but this shirt just isn't worth $35 - you and I both know that" Owner: "So then don't buy it." New location is conveniently located, so they get one star for that. And they still have some great tees, however l noticed many of the expensive ones on the wall aren't priced, probably because they change the price according to who's asking. They no longer carry much of a selection in any other category. No shoes. It's definitely a downgrade. My biggest complaint is the staff. Zero customer service, they barely look up from their phones when you walk in the door or the entire time you shop. Although they couldn't be bothered to even say hi, both guys sitting at counter made sure to point to the area right inside the door where I'm supposed to leave my drink. They all seem miserable, tbh. Not the same experience as the old location, where they were always friendly and helpful. Maybe get your current staff to at least pretend they wanna be there. If you need a tshirt from your teenage years here your place. Who would have guessed all those old concert t shirts from the 70's and 80's would be worth so much. Here's a two level shop crammed full of racks of almost any concert shirt you could wish for. As well as those parachute pants and letterman jackets. The day we were there the store was quite full of inventory and customers, it was almost hard to move around. Don't forget to go downstairs to see the coats and more. One of the best vintage clothing stores I have ever been to! While the prices can often be high, they can even be kind of crazy with a rare $400 nirvana T-shirt. Wowser!!! But seriously, the buyers do an excellent job of finding great vintage graphic tees, windbreakers, letter jackets, you name it if it was cool it is in the store. The buyer also has a keen eye for good looking graphics, they have rounders and rounders of AWESOME band T-shirts. In theory, I love vintage shopping. The idea of scrounging around and finding a one-of-a-kind piece for a good price is, in theory, appealing. In reality, I'm too lazy for that shit. Metropolis makes vintage shopping a bit easier. Everything is well organized and there are hints of items everywhere that seem to catch the eye. I do think the clothes are overpriced, with yellowed house dresses going for no less than $35 apiece, but the shoe selection is on point and really rather stellar. The shoes are stupidly easy to browse, divided by both style and size, and they're mostly in the middle double-digit range. The styles are in tune with current trends that favor masculine brogues and the like, and I picked up an awesome pair of black leather ankle boots for $45 that I would've noticed and loved in a department store. They wear like new, but they allow me that special smugness unique to vintage shoppers. Thanks to Metropolis for doing all the work. read more

I recently bought a crewneck sweatshirt the other day (yesterday) and was super excited to wear it. I put it in my suitcase as I was traveling through New York right after my bus ride there. When I got to the Airbnb, I took it out in excitement to see it and try it on again. Instantly I noticed something was wrong, there was a huge white streak going straight down the middle as if somebody bleached it or sanded it down. I felt awful as I had just spent 65$ on it and it was only in my suitcase for 4-5 hours. My thinking is that it was so "vintage" that after I folded it down, put it in my suitcase, the pressure was too much for it and the fabric ended up changing color. It really bummed me out as I loved the color way and I knew there was probably nothing I could do. All of my other clothes in my suitcase were perfectly fine and nothing bad had happened to them. The next day I tried to call them to see if I could get in store credit or a refund of some sorts. I was even willing to settle for 30$ or something because I know I did nothing to this sweatshirt for this to happen. Their instantly reply every time was "it's not in the condition it was when you bought it, there's nothing we can do about it. It was outside factors that were your responsibility" I begged them to see if I could do anything about it and kept a polite tone but they eventually ended up telling me to send a picture to them on Instagram. I did so, and they just told me the exact same thing. I knew then and there it was just a way for them to get me off the phone. For anybody in the future, please watch out for their clothing. There's a very high possibility that the fabric is too old and sketchy to handle any type of wear and they will not give two shits if something like this happens to you. They only care about the money they make and they have terrible customer support. There was no indication on the clothes saying "don't fold too hard or you may cause discoloration" and what the fuck... it was literally in my suitcase for 5 hours just FOLDED what kind of clothes can't handle that. There was no chemicals touching it and it's 100% just bad quality clothing that they're just selling to naive customers. Also, watch out for the Levi's jeans that they charge 90+$ for. Most of them aren't even vintage and you can instantly tell because they have nylon care tags (introduced in the mid to late 2000's)... clearly not vintage and NOT worth your money. read more

Metropolis also has a wide selection of boots, so I might come back here during the fall/winter when boots are more appropriate. I stumbled upon this cool thrift store while looking for a bar lol, but I was happy I found it. The staff is friendly and inviting. This thrift store has some of the coolest pieces I've ever seen. They had some of the things I've had and wore as a kid and teen (wish I would have kept them lol) they have something for everyone, literally. Two floor location and so much to choose from. I will say they are not cheap by any means. I understand why they can't be too cheap but some of the prices were like sheesh. Nevertheless, it's definitely worth visiting and browsing. read more

This place is sooo overpriced, and they don't even sell that nice of things! Just hear me out! The things they have are not the worst, and there's even more vintage shops around these areas that charge more for even worse stuff, but my issue was the customer service. Each employee was not friendly, and treated the customers as if they were doing them a favor for allowing them into their used clothes shop. A specific example was when I asked how much a not so nice looking "Hanes" t shirt with an artists picture on it was the guy said "oh! That's way too expensive" and I asked how much he said 250! When I asked why he said "there's not another one like it" . A lot of the clothes were dirty with stains of all sorts, but still so boldly priced above 70 bucks. Definitely a tourist trap! Rude on the phone and not helpful when calling to ask for directions. Arrived 20 mins before closing, after having called to tell them I was on my way but slightly lost. They closed early, literally locking people out who were walking in, staff seemed annoyed that anyone wanted to shop, though they knew I was coming and they saw others walking toward their door. Everyone was surprised they'd be so rude; they could have just let folks know they closed in 20 and it probably would have been fine, not to mention we were all obviously going there (as customers do) in hopes of finding items to buy. I have loved going to this shop, stopping in to buy vintage t's every month or so, up until this weekend. I purchased two shirts on Friday just before closing, and came back Saturday afternoon to see if I could exchange one. As soon as I started to speak, the store manager started to shake his head "no". Before I could finish inquiring about the exchange, he cut me off with the store police. "No receipt; no exchange." I had indeed lost my receipt. Bad me. 10 years ago, the policy might have made sense. But I had paid with a card, and the shirt had a tag with a barcode. It would have been possible to check the last few transactions of the previous night and make things right with a repeat customer. Even if the policy were to make sense, the manager's attitude just sucked. It was a shining example of chin-jutting, petty-tyranny. "This has been our policy for, like, 30 years." I left the store feeling like a punk. If I'm going to pay top-shelf prices for vintage t's, I'll take my business to a shop with at least a modicum customer service. Boooooooo read more

On a visit to NYC stopped in this place. What a score. Great selection of vintage T's. All price ranges but most on the high side and still worth it. Staff was friendly. No food or drinks allowed in the store and you can not take any bags or purses into the down stairs space. Also have nice selection of denim jackets and basketball jerseys. I went to Metropolis in search if a vintage men's motorcycle jacket. Knowing this store extremely well I headed downstairs to the leather section. As I descended to the lower level, I was accosted by a Metropolis employee and told that no large bags were allowed downstairs. I had only my handbag, so I said, "I don't have any large bags, are you talking about my purse?" he said, "No, your bag. You could totally fit a pair of shoes in there. Anyway- there is only mens stuff downstairs". As someone who has spend thousands of dollars on over priced "vintage" at Metropolis I am first and foremost flabbergasted that I was treated like a shoplifter. But more than that, I am offended that I look like someone who is going to steal a pair of $49 used, old, dirty, mens loafers by shoving them in to my Miu Miu pocketbook. Nevermind that I am expected to trust my life's possessions at the upstairs counter of a dingy thrift shop when downstairs there are 3 employees, who if they were doing their job, could keep an eye out for used shoe thieves on the prowl. Metropolis- your early 2000's "vintage" is overpriced and in crap condition, and your customer service is offensive to probably the only people who actually buy stuff there; costume designers shopping on the networks dime. I'll go out of my way to find what I need elsewhere in the future. read more

As soon as I came into this thrift store, I liked almost everything I saw. But as soon as I looked at the price tags, I suddenly liked everything A LOT less. My boyfriend found a messenger bag for $45 he liked a lot, until he looked inside of it and saw a Goodwill price tag for $8.99. They have nice stuff, but WAY WAY WAY overpriced for a "thrift store". Even for Manhattan. It's a nice place if you have $35 to spend on a raggedy "vintage" t shirt, but I don't, so that will be my last stop at Metropolis. COMFORTABLE: The workers never bother, let alone pressure you. But they're chill and helpful. You really can take all the time in the world without getting pestered by annoying employees. 3. ORGANIZATION: The organization is fabulous so you don't need to spend hours shuffling through clothes after clothes as you normally would thrifting. 4. I always believe used stuff shouldn't be expensive but vintage can be. Because the former is based on living necessity, thus called thrift stores; and the latter, on fashion. They are boutiques. It's especially true at Metropolis, now my Metroboots. Surely it's not a cheap place but definitely cheaper than places like Flying A and much less pretentious (cause it's East Village, of course!), more rock n roll. With that kind of range of selection, sizes and quality (obviously not new, but are taken care of: very clean; mended heels) I will never complain about the price there. $65-$125 for tall boots isn't THAT bad afterall, and never have you to worry someone else in the whole New York copying your style. More on the boots: they get a lot of them from LA; sizes are all marked, easy to find; very cute heels; any plain-looking pair of boots always, always has some hidden gem in the thoughtful designs; a lot of the cowboy styles use very hard leather, so make sure to walk around in them. And on the staff there: super laid back, very interesting. Once at the cash register I said to one of the guys "I love your store!", without thanking me for the compliment, he said "It's fun, isn't it." Haha. They usually leave you alone but are friendly. Usually I leave vintage stores with a sense of moth ball scented buyer's remorse. Other times, it comes a few days later, when I wear what I bought and realize I look like a trashy grandma. However, I've never had that feeling about anything I've bought from Metropolis (and I've even bought something bedazzled!) The salespeople there are kind of uninvolved, which can be good because they're also pretty cool from my experience so far. A lot of stuff there is overpriced ($25 t-shirt? no thanks), but that is pretty normal for New York vintage. I've gotten some really cute tops there for $15-25 though, so that's not bad. They do have a lot of vintage lace-up leather ankle boots, which seem to be popular in NYC. I have never seen so many leather boots for women in MY size and slighty bigger or smaller. And for men, racks and racks of button-down shirts from dressy to western to everything. For women a small rack with dresses marked down since it's the summer and lots of hats and bags. But the men hit the jackpot here, pants, slacks, denim, hats, belts TIES oh my and TIES galore. Seriously, everything is under $175 and priced according to it's wear, cool-factor and size. Womens boots are mostly $50 - 150 mens slightly higher and the clothing are all under a $100. I was talking to my friend about how I was wondering if they had a blur shirt and a few minutes later a guy with blue hair comes with a blur shirt saying he overheard me talking about it. They are literally selling "vintage" items for $65+ Now, are some of the items worth $65? Sure but most of what I saw wasn't. I get that it's in the East Village, so it is appealing to a certain clientele but geez?! I've given it 2 stars because the staff is very helpful and they have this really cool Batman t-shirt that I've never seen before. Since I'm a Batman fan/I am Batman, this appeals to me greatly. Metropolis is great, and yes, is is the place to shop for boots. While they do stock the run-of-the-mill 80's dresses, they do not charge $90 for them, unlike some other "vintage" establishments in the the city. They also have some collectible clothing, which is marked up, but not unreasonably priced. Like the other reviewers mentioned, the music is perfect, the atmosphere is great, and the staff is quirky as hell. One of them reacted to me coming out of the dressing room in the 80's-does-40's dress by saying " See, before you looked so-so, but in this dress--much better!". This is an amazing store! I went there with my very picky partner (and collector of vintage rock band- t-shirts ) The store is well organised and has a wide range of different t-shirts.
