    Chocolate bar...yum!!
    Raya K.

The Beall Mansion came highly recommended by a friend of mine who had stayed here a few months back with her boyfriend. When I was thinking of a good place to stay for one night as a small weekend excursion, I couldn't stop thinking about her gushing about this B&B. I reserved the room with the queen bed and whirlpool. I also selected the basic continental breakfast. I found it a little unclear what I was selecting when I was booking online. Retrospectively, I would have selected the breakfast in bed package (even at the additional cost). When we arrived we got a tour of the downstairs and were showed to our room. The canopy bed was filled with pillows. I immediately wanted to dive in. Instead, we plopped our stuff down and went out for a quick dinner. We came back to Beall to enjoy the complimentary brandy and to indulge in the unlimited chocolate bar. Yep, you heard that right. All the chocolate you could ever want, available at all hours of the day! We sat in one of the rooms downstairs, reading some of the books strewn about and sipping on our nightcap. Heaven! The next morning we went outside to check out the front and backyard. There's a hammock and several benches to hang around in. Since it was fall, there were fallen leaves everywhere and the mansion was incredibly picturesque. Although Alton is only a 30 minute drive from where I live, staying at the Beall feels like you have been transported to an entirely different place and time! I think it is safe to say that I will have to come back here again. Definitely for two nights next time.

We went for a school project and we're pleasantly surprised! The tour was very detailed and thought out by our AMAZING tour guide. The whole thing was just overall a great quality.

However, this review is about them, so let me focus on them only. If you go to Post Commons, you gotta get a biscuit. Their biscuits are homemade and they are delicious. My personal favorite biscuit sandwich is the Sausage. In addition to the sausage patty, it has cream cheese and pepper jam. The pepper jam is what really makes this sammie special. If you're wanting a more hearty breakfast, you can create your own plate with items from the A La Carte menu. I've created one with two scrambled eggs, bacon and breakfast potatoes. The potatoes are cut into little cubes and fried to a crispy golden color. It's a great place to meet friends for a cup of coffee. The staff is cordial and makes you feel welcomed. Why go to a chain coffee shop, when you have a unique one in a old post office building? There is, no reason to go. When: February 4, 2026 Why: Biscuit Sandwich

This place is within walking distance of many great Alton eateries and shops. Also only a 16 minute drive to Grafton or Edwardsville for for entertainment. One drawback is the parking. No dedicated lot so it's only street parking. There are dedicated spaces out front and side parking is available too. We cannot wait to come back and utilize this space again! *Wasn't able to picture of all the rooms just mine*

The outside is rustic and historical and inside is spacious, flowing and beautiful. I recently attended a family wedding here and the attention to details in the set-up were top notch. The organization of tables, buffet and most importantly the bar, had an easy and smooth flow for the 230 guest. It was set up for a small happy hour before the ceremony for the guest and future Mr. & Mrs. to mingle. Then the ceremony took place in the main room with all the guest seated a their dinner tables. Once the vows were exchanged, it was time for dinner and more cocktails. The buffet was set-up in the smaller room that you first enter from the outside. The staff and caterer (you select your own caterer) had the table organized well allowing for an easy traffic flow of those coming and those returning to their seats with full plates. This bride & groom selected Johnson's Corner to cater their wedding and they did an impressive job. Once all the guest had completed their meal, it was time to party. WOW knows how to set a wedding/party up. The tables were already organized and set up so well, the center aisle easily became the dance floor. If you need a venue for a wedding as my family did, or if you've got a special anniversary, retirement or monumental birthday celebration, consider WOW for your party. Acoustics are great, you are able to hear well at all points without it being LOUD. There is a great deal of room upstairs for the bridal party, and the same with the room for the grooms party to get ready, with a separate room for them to hang out once they're finished. The only con I saw was the floor being a bit wonky in a few places (not in the natural walkways, thank goodness). It can catch you a bit off guard when you are skirting the dance floor when in heels. Not a huge issue, but it's something to scope out before the event so you can warn your unsteadier elderly guests away from those few areas to avoid mishaps. This is in to way a criticism of the venue, it's in a much older building and that just sort of the way things are in older places. :)

Some say it is fitting, as Alton is known to be one of the Top 10 haunted places in the United States. The building itself was a hotel that opened over a century ago, and several paranormal sightings have been reported over the years. You can kind of get the idea once you set the foot in the place. Its only five dollars admission, and you get to learn a lot about, well, ways people tortured people for centuries. First off, this museum is not for everyone. There are some offensive and disturbing parts here, as one would sense. This is basically for the open-minded, and for those who have a keen sense of history. The museum is a bit small, but there are several things that await the visitor. The woman who operates this museum has apparently done so much research and collected so many artifacts about the 'torture' subject. You can definitely tell she had an enjoyable time doing this! The weapons/chambers/photographs are accompanied by several materials that talk about how people were tortured. The first paragraph usually explains how the device operated, and the history behind when it was used (like what time period and what country/continent). The always controversial topic of slavery (in most countries of all periods of time) is also explained here. I'd rather not give away too much. You may find the subject on torture interesting! When reading these, I had to put myself in these people's shoes. Whether they were the victims, or the people who lived under one supreme ruler who frequently used the torture devices on the folks under them. Some of these torture methods are still being used today in some parts of the world, sadly. If you make a weekend trip to Alton, check this place out. Unfortunately, the museum is not open during the week, just on Saturday and Sundays. Be sure to check the hours.
