What a delightful bed and breakfast mansion complete with host in a tuxedo and amazing history! I felt right at home and absolutely loved my amazing suite complete with chandeliers in the bedroom and spa bathroom. The beds are SO comfortable, so many pillows to choose from you'll find the perfect one. Gorgeously decorated Victorian Mansion! We stayed here for Valentines Day and spent two nights at this gorgeous mansion. Because it was winter, we did not get to see the beauty of the grounds but when we pulled up to this house we were in AWE! It is a gorgeous mansion, especially lit up at night. We were greeted by "Jim" the owner who also plays a wonderful role as butler! This man has SO much personality and information and is familiar with the era and can tell you story after story! He was just a joy to talk to. He took us on a tour of the house and explained everything. This place is like a museum and everywhere you look there is something to explore and see! Their taste in decoration really went the full nine yards! Our room was the veranda room. It had a huge Queen size bed with feather comforter. The bathroom has an awesome whirlpool for two as described. The lighting is fantastic. Not much storage for clothing if you stay more than one night as there is no closet. The veranda has adorable wicker furniture. Had it not been winter we would have sat out there. Our bed was turned down with chocolates and we had ice upon arrival just as described. Only complaints we have are that we encountered numerous stinkbugs in our room and one on the chocolate bar. We brought it to the owners attention who felt bad but explained there was nothing much they can do and we understand that. The chocolate bar was a bit skimpy. By night two several choices were completely empty or had 2 pieces only left in the bowl. We felt this should be stocked better as it is mentioned numerous times in the advertisement and is a very neat feature of this bed n breakfast. There is a continental breakfast included but we felt out of place and not sure what to do. It is a help yourself but the paid gourmet breakfast guests sit at the dining room table. We felt awkward so didn't eat the continental breakfast as it takes place in the Butlers Pantry. The 24 hour beverage bar is awesome. Stocked with many teas and coffee and all the accompaniments to that. We loved drinking tea at night and looking in the parlor and reading all the articles and history of the area, the owners of the b&B and the B&B itself. There is SO much to do here and look at not only at the inn but in the surrounding areas as well! We only met Sandy the day we were leaving. I would have loved to chat with her more. The entire best part of this all is feeling at home in this beautiful place and how the owners will do anything to make you happy!! If you're an antique collector or lover this is the only place to stay in Alton. I went here for a work trip and have extreme diva standards when it comes to hotels. In Alton there isn't much to choose from. For a decent hotel you'll have to drive to St. Louis which is 30 minutes out of my way for meetings. I chose this place because it's a B&B and it was gorgeous from the pics and literally 6 minutes from my meeting the next day. Once I booked it, I got a call from one of the owners, Jim, who asked me about my tea preferences and what he could do to make my stay there more comfortable. I was ecstatic. Tea and antiques! Once I got there I was blown away at the detail they put to maintain a long gone era of Victorian décor. Everything was carved and commanded a presence of luxury. Also, I immediately notice how calming and quiet it was, which was a pleasant surprise! I really dislike loud noises of any kind (high anxiety here), and I felt peace in this place. Jim helped me take my luggage to my room and even gave me a tour of my room outlining all the details and amenities just in case I wasn't sure. My room was absolutely gorgeous! There was an 8 or 9 foot tall carved teak armoire, a great size bathroom with separate shower and bathtub and homemade lavender infused bath salts his wife made! I took a bath every night and I felt like a queen! I was ecstatic. There was even a separate antique vanity strategically placed in the corner of the room right in the middle of two windows so that light would surround it evenly. It was fabulous. I enjoyed all the attention to detail. They made sure a guest would not need a thing. The bedding was perfect. Down comforters and down pillows and cotton sheets, none of that microfiber nastiness. It smelled and felt like home. The most important thing was the food! They had a tea station in the dining room for 24/7 use. And the kitchen was open in the morning for breakfast. Tea, oatmeal, bagels, fruit, eggs. Perfection! I would've been happy with just the 24/7 tea station. And let me tell you it was just bliss to be able to obtain some decent tea and hot water at any point throughout the day. I am HUGE tea drinker! And this was the reason I fell in love with this place. There was also coffee and their own brand of tea which was also quite delicious. They even had stevia if you didn't want the 5 other choices offered for sweetener. On the other side of the dining room there was a station for CHOCOLATE! I was a mess. They were all carefully placed in crystal dishes with the flavor or type of chocolate being offered just above it. Just shoot me. It was amazing. Sadly, I stayed here for less than the time I actually booked it for since I had a cancelled flight and rushed to book something earlier as a result of the airline. I was in such a panic to leave that I left my very expensive leather backpack in the room and didn't notice until I was already at the car rental location. When I called over I spoke to Jim and he went to my room to locate it and said he would overnight it to me as per my request. It contained not only my laptop but also my house and car keys! I was distraught, but knew Jim would take care of it as he had taken care of everything else while I was there! Overall the price was more than fair for the room. Cleanliness 1000%. Quiet. Beautiful. EXCELLENT customer service. Oooh and there also was free brandy in the parlor. I gotta stop because otherwise I'd be writing a dissertation. The Beall Mansion came highly recommended by a friend of mine who had stayed here a few months back with her boyfriend. When I was thinking of a good place to stay for one night as a small weekend excursion, I couldn't stop thinking about her gushing about this B&B. I reserved the room with the queen bed and whirlpool. I also selected the basic continental breakfast. I found it a little unclear what I was selecting when I was booking online. Retrospectively, I would have selected the breakfast in bed package (even at the additional cost). When we arrived we got a tour of the downstairs and were showed to our room. The canopy bed was filled with pillows. I immediately wanted to dive in. Instead, we plopped our stuff down and went out for a quick dinner. We came back to Beall to enjoy the complimentary brandy and to indulge in the unlimited chocolate bar. Yep, you heard that right. All the chocolate you could ever want, available at all hours of the day! We sat in one of the rooms downstairs, reading some of the books strewn about and sipping on our nightcap. Heaven! The next morning we went outside to check out the front and backyard. There's a hammock and several benches to hang around in. Since it was fall, there were fallen leaves everywhere and the mansion was incredibly picturesque. Although Alton is only a 30 minute drive from where I live, staying at the Beall feels like you have been transported to an entirely different place and time! We stayed for the weekend. It was given to me and my bf as a gift. Wasn't sure what the expect since it was during the covid regulations, but it was absolutely awesome! The couple who run it are friendly and you could tell they wanted to be of service. The entire house is gorgeous and had loads of historical artifacts and pictures of the original owners from the 1940s! The bed was so comfortable we both slept well...which is hard for me even at home! The whirlpool bath relaxed me in minutes and we ate breakfast every morning on the attached porch to the room. If you're looking for a quiet get away that has you able to relax and do some site seeing, this place is it! Only 10 minutes from St Louis as well but out of the traffic and hub bub of the city...also 30ish minutes from Grafton and all it's glory! We will be back! read more

I love B&Bs. I'm a total B&B junkie. I prefer B&Bs to standard hotels. A B&B with a historical past? I'm IN. So when it came time for my boyfriend and I to visit his parents in Alton, IL, I immediately went on the hunt for a B&B near to where they lived. I stumbled upon the listing for the Beall Mansion on the B&B search site bedandbreakfast.com and instantly fell in love. Historic background? Check! Let me just say my boyfriend and I were simply overwhelmed when we arrived. The quaint beauty of the place is inspiring and so romantic. We actually whispered a "holy ****" to each other when walking through the home's entry hall. We stayed in the home's Mary Harris room which consisted of a huge queen sized canopy bed that we felt lost in (in the good way) and a whirlpool tub in the bathroom. The room amenities (shampoo and conditioner, water bottle, towels, blankets, wifi, bath salts) made us feel comfortable and right at home. Downstairs, the attention to the smallest detail continued with the home's decor down to the chocolate buffet table and the never ending supply of gourmet teas (a HUGE plus in my book) in the dining room, and the brandy decanter in the music room. In the library sat two photo albums filled with photos from the restoration of the home, and it's evident that owners Jim and Sandy put a lot of love into the home. That love is felt throughout and adds to the overall ambiance of the place. Being the picky vegan that I am automatically places me in the diva guest list, even though I'm actually not that difficult. We were sent an email long before we arrived asking us for any dietary needs/restrictions/allergies, and therefore Jim and Sandy were kind enough to provide me with almond milk even though it was difficult to find in those parts. They apologized for not having a larger selection for me, but I did not find anything to complain about. I was able to partake in the cereals and fresh bagels and jam every morning, and you bet I took advantage of the signature teas every chance I got. Again - the attention to detail was astounding and very appreciated. We thoroughly enjoyed our romantic and relaxing holiday and have decided that the Beall Mansion will be our home whenever visiting the in-laws. We can't wait to come back. Thank you Jim & Sandy. I never got to stay here. My train was canceled from Chicago the night I was to leave, so I left early the next morning and returned late the same night. BUT, while in Alton after the meeting I went for, the folks at Beall Mansion hosted me and my cousin while we sat in their parlor with a fire, had tea and had a wonderful visit. I can't imagine a better place to spend a few hours. The place is immaculate and even it's ultra-ornate Victorian theme was delightful. And being greeted by the owner wearing a tux was awesome! Jim and Sandy really set the bar high for bed and breakfast locations. This was our first experience going to one. I believe that we will never find one as unique and pleasant as this one. The excellent experience started with the pleasant conversation on the phone booking the room and even continued all the way to check out. The residence is beautiful inside and out, and Jim narration of all the old Antiques takes your mind back to the beginning of the century. The history and detail of this house was so amazing and even more crazy was the extensive knowledge that Jim knew all about it. This place is great! I just realized that I have never done a review even though I have stayed here ( I'm here now) at least 6 times and been completely happy each time. They have done a wonderful job creating what I think is an ideal and high end version of a bed and breakfast. The decor is Victorian. Every time I stay, they are so nice and professional. It's in a pretty, historic part of Alton. One of my favorite things is getting up in the morning and running around the neighborhood and seeing all of the old mansions. They offer a more elaborate breakfast but I have never had time to enjoy it. They have fruits, yogurt, pastries, cereal and hard boiled eggs in addition to coffee and tea if you are on the go. The grounds are lovely and would be nice to just hang around in and have your coffee or wine etc. The beds are very comfortable and feel like your in a high end hotel. They don't engage you too much which I love. However, if you would like a higher level of contract and attention, I know they would be happy to give it. read more

My boyfriend surprised me with a weekend away for my birthday, and chose the Beall Mansion because he knows I love bed and breakfasts. The house is gorgeous and when we arrived, Jim was there to receive us in a tux. He was extremely polite and helpful and gave us a brief tour around the house. I loved the history of the mansion (it's over 100 years old!) and all the beautiful antiques and furniture. They offer a complimentary nightcap in crystal glasses of brandy, 24 hour complimentary coffee, organic teas, and soda, and also... A FREE CHOCOLATE BAR. They had an ENTIRE antique buffet table covered in all different kinds of chocolate. It was available 24 hours a day at no cost. I definitely took advantage of that many times during the course of our stay! My boyfriend chose to book the upstairs former servants quarters, and I loved it. Even after peeking at some of the rooms on the second floor, I was happy he chose the upstairs room. It has more privacy and is quieter, and feels almost like a little apartment. There is a sitting room with a large tv that had been pre-set to play classical music when we arrived. Our bedroom had an antique bed carved out of rosewood that was gorgeous. Our bathroom had marble flooring and an antique claw-foot bathtub, complete with handmade lavender bath salts. I love taking baths so this was heaven for me. All in all, I loved my time at the Beall Mansion. The service was wonderful and the accommodations were great. I will say that I was not particularly impressed with the "no frills" continental breakfast (we had bagels or a danish) but we are students and I couldn't have justified the expense for the breakfast in bed option although it did look great. Jim and Sandy Belote have done a wonderful job in restoring such a splendid home to it's original magnificence. They do not skimp on any details during our stay. My partner and I stayed here instead of at one of Alton's low-end generic hotels during our annual Christmas visit to my family. It was pricey, but worth it! The innkeeper and owner, Jim, is there in a tux to greet you when you arrive--and while he could talk and talk about the inn, he can take the hint that you want to be alone or enjoy some silence. His wife isn't around as much, but was very nice when I did see her. Special compliments to one of the staff--Jean--who was exceptionally friendly and helpful throughout our 4 night stay. As others have said, the furniture and decor throughout the inn are period pieces and are consistently beautiful and interesting. Our room was lovely, although a bit overdecorated for my taste. The bed was comfortable with nice linens; there are very effective black-out stades so you can sleep in; and the bathroom is to die for: awesome whirlpool tub with homemade lavendar bath salts! The areas for improvement, in my view are: --the bathroom linens are not high quality and seem old; these need an upgrade! --there was no dresser or other furniture in which to unpack and store clothes; we hung things in the closet, but also had to live out of our suitcases. --the continental breakfast is lame. You can upgrade to the hot breakfast, which I'm sure is fantastic, but the breakfast that comes with the "no frills" package is disappointing. The selection is OK: pre-packaged danish or english muffins, some fresh or dried fruit, yogurt, coffee, etc. But there's just something lacking here. In fact, I think I've had better continental breakfasts at the aforementioned generic local hotels! I love breakfast food, but after the first morning I didn't even bother to eat here. I'd rather drive to the St. Louis Bread Company to get a fresh bagel and good coffee It's a quiet neighborhood and there's plenty of parking behind the inn and on the streets. I enjoyed driving around looking at all of the other old mansions nearby. We will definitely be back next Christmas! read more

We discovered the Beall Mansion on what turned into an extended weekend trip to my parent's house. I was unable to travel far due to a kidney stone, but I couldn't even be upset about it because I was able to rest in such a wonderful space. The house is impeccably decorated with antiques, but still feels welcoming and usable. Jim and Sandy were perfect hosts checking on us periodically to make sure we had everything we needed to be comfortable, providing interesting anecdotes about the history of the house, and encouraging us to take full advantage of the 24 hour chocolate buffet. My husband surprised me with a stay at the Beall for my birthday and our 6-month wedding anniversary - what a perfect place to celebrate! The mansion retains its period grandeur while being modern enough to provide all the amenities you could hope for. The whirlpool tub was spotless and fabulous. There was even a chandelier in the bathroom which made me feel like I was staying in a castle (see photo). Jim is very knowledgeable about the history of the home and happy to share that knowledge with his guests. The chocolate bar ("bar" as in buffet, not a measly piece of chocolate) was an unexpected treat, and we appreciated extra touches like the complimentary sodas in the 24-hour refrigerator. The pastries in there were all individually packaged and labeled for the continental breakfast; they looked wonderful. Normally I would prefer this self-serve option, but as my husband splurged for breakfast in bed on my birthday, we enjoyed a multi-course breakfast complete with dessert wine. Sounds strange, but it worked. Location feels very safe and convenient for walking to lots of great restaurants in downtown Alton. Definitely recommend! read more

My coworker and I just stayed overnight. I called to make reservations a few weeks ago. Jim was so professional and courteous on phone. We couldn't wait to arrive. He met us at door and introduced us to his beautiful home. He gave us a wonderful, informative tour of the mansion. It is so beautiful. When you step inside, it's like going back in time. I'll call it the "Magical history tour ". My room was beautiful and the beds were like sleeping on a cloud. So very peaceful and quiet. I had my own large bathroom. Nice, big flat screen tv and free WiFi. The chocolate bar, tea and coffee bar were nice treats, as well. I loved the pillows so much, I bought one to take home. Hope to visit Jim and Sandy again soon. read more

That first room pictured with a queen four-post bed is the room my husband and I stayed in. The bed was comfortable; we slept like babies. The blackout curtains helped us sleep well into the morning. All previous reviewers' comments about Jim, the chocolate bar (note: the pictures on Yelp do not do it justice; we're talking a bureau top FULL of various chocolates), and the attention to detail are spot on. Though we wanted to getaway from the cares of this world, having a TV in the room playing classical music was quite a nice, elegant addition that transported us back to the Victorian era. If you're trying to decide which package to spring for, I'd suggest going for one that includes breakfast in bed. Jean, who made our breakfast, had me get into bed before placing my breakfast tray over my lap. The breakfast comes complete with an appetizer, entree, dessert, and palate cleansing liquor. We biked from St. Louis (30 mi) to enjoy the elegance of the Beall Mansion and it was well worth the painful (for me), hot ride to enjoy such opulence! read more

First and foremost, I was beyond impressed with the gracious service that Jim offered from the moment I booked the room to the moment we completed out stay. That alone would be justification for 5 stars. But that was only the beginning. The property is absolutely gorgeous. It really feels like stepping back in time. They have done an amazing job at restoring and decorating this home. There are so many little perks that prove that the owners will go above and beyond to create an incredibly welcoming experience for their guests (ie. the chocolate bar, homemade bath salts, toiletries, and glass bottled water in each room). They are also incredibly knowledgeable about the property and it's history, as well as places to visit around town. I would not hesitate to recommend the Beall Mansion to anyone who is looking for a relaxing and accommodating getaway. This is not a review of the property as I did not end up staying there or having my wedding there. Essentially, the Beall booked the rooms I was trying to reserve for my wedding weekend while I was waiting for them to send me the special events agreement and never told me while we continued to contract for my event. I would never have guessed that the proprietors were booking the rooms I wanted while I was waiting for them to send me the special events agreement - we picked the weekend I was interested in because it was the only one that month where all five rooms were available and we were actively discussing the services I wanted and it was very clear that I was not even remotely on the fence about booking that weekend. All of my conversations with Jim had been such a pleasure up to that point that it was really a shock. Standard practice would be to put the rooms on hold for a few days while we were finalizing their written contract, particularly as I am not local and can't just come over and sign it, and the proprietors were delayed in getting the contract to me. Lastly, because of the scope of the liability waiver language in their contract, had I gone ahead and signed the agreement without checking the room status online myself, I would have been legally stuck in the event contract even though the rooms I wanted were no longer available. Given that, I'm really surprised that they didn't tell me. Jim seemed very nice, the property seemed very nice, and I'm sure if you were local and could book on the spot this probably wouldn't be a problem, but I otherwise I would be wary. I doubt the proprietors have any intention of pulling one over on anybody, but it seems like that would have been the end result in this case. read more

I recently visited the Beall Mansion when I had a photography assignment due (subject: architecture.) They were kind enough to let me photograph the place. Jim have us some good history on the mansion. This place is beautiful and immaculate! I'm amazed at how well it is maintained. It feels like you're being sent back in time. There are not enough good words to describe this place and the experience it provides! My wife and I came down to Alton for a short getaway. We needed a few days to relax after I finished my second year of medical school. I was tired and burnt out but my wife was even more stressed than I as a high school science teacher. It was a sacrifice for her to take off work and we had to put our already small budget on the chopping block but we decided to do it as our lone vacation this year and to celebrate our 2-year wedding anniversary a month early. We don't have even the slightest bit of regret! We arrived late in the evening but Jim, who is incredibly kind and accommodating, was still there to greet us and give us a tour of the house. He allowed us to store our bikes in the shed, which was very gracious. I could go on and on about the elegance, service, beauty, and comfort of the Beall Mansion. Not to mention the chocolate bar! (From which we frequently and superfluously dined.) To sum it up best: My wife wrapped herself up in the luxurious bath robe and lay down on the bed. After a while I looked over and she had her eyes closed and a soft, gentle smirk. She quietly whispered, "I'm more relaxed than I have ever been." And that's when I knew it. We had such a wonderful time staying here on a weekend getaway! Jim was so knowledgeable about the history of the home and such a great host! Bed was super comfy and breakfast was delish.
