If you're near Causeway St and Medford St and even if you're not, make a beeline to this hidden gem in the basement of an office building. I had time on my hands this morning and stumbled on this place. It's awesome. The coffee is robust and delicious. My breakfast, which was a Veggie Omelet, Home Fries, and a side of Crispy Bacon, definitely crushed it. The food was so fresh and piping hot that I could have sworn they had livestock and a mature garden at hand. (The mushrooms were canned, tho--no worries, it's all good.) Ample seating for dine in, very clean. Customer service is second to none. I'm unsure of how long they've been here, but I know I'm coming back for lunch in the very near future. I discovered Bean & Leaf on a recent trip to Boston. I'm a late breakfast eater and the hotel bistro was closed. Bean & Leaf popped up with a quick Yelp search and I started walking around the block. The only negative is the entrance off of Medford is a bit hidden but, once I went down the stairs, I saw a beautiful huge clean space with menu boards full of amazing made to order breakfast and lunch items. I ordered the Western Wrap and a Latte. It was made quickly and served piping hot with the freshest ingredients. Highly recommend you seek this place out! read more

Hidden gem in Boston. Everything is delicious! They have a huge variety of lunch items from Turkey, cheese and avocado on your choice of Iggy's breads to mulligatawny soup. You can even order breakfast items at lunch. The owner Christine is awesome and is very accommodating. I opted for the ham & cheese omelet with home fries and with coffee, it came to a round $10. A few minutes later, the young lady brought my breakfast to my table. Huge omelet. The fluffy kind, not the flat kind, which is my favorite. A good amount of ham and cheese in there, I could only eat half of it. Potatoes were good but I thought too salty. Small place with couple of outdoor tables. Serves mostly soup, salad etc. mostly Mediterranean food. I went to quickly grab some food with my colleagues. They order some Mediterranean roll ups. I found the daily special interesting and wanted to try it. It was Mango chicken with salad and rice. It was hot in temperature and sweetish in taste. I am not a big fan of sweet food but this was flavorful. Loved it!! My colleagues seemed okay with their lunch.. so it was definitely not bad. I don't think I will go back because I didn't find anything else in the menu that I wish to try. It's not a bad place though. Fresh, tasty food. We stopped here for a quick breakfast bite before a day of sightseeing. I was bummed I had purchased a cup of over-priced fruit at Quincy Market, because the Bean & Leaf also had a cup of fruit that was reasonably priced, and looked more fresh. We ordered two coffee drinks and two breakfast sandwiches. Only four stars for the Cafe because they didn't get our order 100% correct. My husband ordered a macchiato, which I appreciated comes very traditional to the Italian way. No extras... it will have the shot of espresso (or a double-shot if you order that size) and the appropriate milk ratio. My husband is used to the versions at a well known chain, and so he wasn't expecting this, but I reminded him that this was the true way to make a macchiato. :) I ordered a decaf americano, which came out piping hot. I love that. It was a bit too hot to drink for a while, but I was grateful that the half and half I added didn't cool the coffee down, or that they didn't accidentally put cold water in and try to cover it with hot (this happens more often than you'd think it should... I'm a frequent americano consumer, and I am accustomed to trying my coffee before I walk away from the counter in case they need to re-make it. We both ordered sausage, egg, and cheese on English muffins. Unfortunately, we got one bacon, egg, and cheese, and the other sandwich was correct. They also came out piping hot, and tasted perfect, just not exactly what we ordered. Despite that, we would definitely return if we visit the area again. read more

So, we stopped by on our first morning before setting out to explore the city, and it was a great way to start the morning. I had a macchiato, my husband had the Americano, and we each had a parfait. The parfaits were very good with fresh fruit and granola. The coffees were both very good as well. They weren't anything to rave about but for the price, we have no complaints. Very well priced for what it is. It's a no frills cafe that is clean with decent food/drinks, friendly service, and low prices. I've passed by the Bean & Leaf Cafe numerous times. It is located down the street from the Custom House, which now houses a Marriott Vacation Club, and sits in the shadow of the building that somewhat resembles a crown. Open for breakfast and lunch on weekdays, I've been meaning to give them a shot for a while, but since I don't go out for work day meals as often as others might, I never made it out to the Bean & Leaf Cafe till just recently. After perusing their menu, and their Yelp reviews, I figured I'd try two things: Turkey Chili ($5 for 12 oz, $6 for 16 oz) which comes with your choice of pita or crackers, and their Rainbow Chicken salad. I noticed that they also had a veggie chili listed on their online menu, but was hesitant to jump without a description, since I wasn't interested if it was just a mix of beans, tomato, and onions. However, the description I elicited when I picked up my turkey chili was an appetizing list of vegetables... another time! The turkey chili was made of ground bird, so it was more smooth and mushy than chunky chewy, but it tasted fine and made a warm and satisfying meal with the tender white pita that came with it. They offer an impressive selection of 7 types of chicken salad for sandwiches $8.50. Their Rainbow variant come with red and green apples, dried cranberries, parsley, and corn covered in a special dressing. With their bread sourced from Iggy's Bread of the World consisting of Sourdough White or Wheat, Seven-grain, French Baguette, White or Wheat Rollup, I opted for the white rollup since I was planning for the sandwich to be my lunch for a hike the next day. Let me say - yum! And I only had it simply with lettuce, chilled, the day after it was made. If I was eating it immediately, I probably would have selected the seven-grain with tomato and whatever other veggies they might include as optional add-ins. I wonder if they'd be willing to toast the bread if I asked... For such a narrow space, they have a small but decent sitting area for those who would prefer to eat their lunch in. And the fellas serving me were pleasant. Breakfast is served till 11am. With their egg, cheese & avocado breakfast sandwich at $3.75, and $2 for a side of home fries, I may have to come back to give that a shot sometime. It comes with a coffee. Too bad I don't drink coffee. *** 12/2016 *** Their vegetable chilli is very vegetable, but not very chilli, unless chilli means kidney beans in a tomato base, cause then this fits the bill. I would describe it as a chunky soup with large chunks of zucchini, squash, onions, cauliflower, tomatoes, and beans. Said beans were tender, while the bulk of the veggies were still firm. I order Seamless from her regularly, and I always order the same thing- turkey avocado sandwich with brie. The brie costs an extra 50 cents but its so worth it. They use Iggy's bread which is a local bread store in Cambridge. The sandwiches are delicious and well stuffed - you can add lots of veges to make it healthy! If you want a delicious sandwich, go to Bean & Leaf. You won't be getting cold stale sandwiches sitting in the fridge, these are freshly made! read more

Sorry Bean and Leaf... but you're going to have to try a bit harder to get 4 stars from me. The service was friendly, and there was a great selection. The star was lost because of the Falafel wrap. I asked about the Falafel, and the guy behind the counter strongly recommended it. The falafel itself (6 bucks)was moist... but not great, and not a heck of a lot of flavor. The Tahini sauce was also largely flavorless. There was no option for hot sauce. In the end, I would have been happier if the guy hadn't built it up, or even suggested the Middle Eastern Rollup (7.50) which includes grapeleaves in the sandwich. Might be worthwhile to go back to try some of those avacado sandwiches or for breakfast. At 5 to 7 bucks for lunch it weighs in as being inexpensive for boston with a good selection, I'd try it again. read more

Breakfast burrito was on point with a multitude of hot sauces to choose from. Their drip coffee was surprisingly smooth, and I had no complaints with their dirty chai. I don't know how you mess up a grilled cheese but it was so dry and hard and these cheese was burnt in some places and barely in the sandwich-it was awful. The turkey sandwich was flavorless. Wow! Have been in Boston for past 7 days and no breakfast place tops this! Starbucks has never served coffee this smooth and delicious. My hubby claims the avocado and cheese omelette with toasted bagel and home cut potatoes was the best breakfast he's had in Boston. I loved my avocado egg and cheese on toasted bagel. Too bad we found this place our last day because their lunch menu and soup selection has us wanting to dine here again. The team running this place were super upbeat and helpful!
