We…read moreopted to go for the adult only retreat as our youngest child (the only one left) had no desire to go and if we weren't taking our kid we certainly didn't want to deal with anyone else's. Going into this trip I didn't know much, other than they had horses and that was what I wanted to do - ride horses. We arrived really early in the morning and was picked up at the airport, which was the size of a postage stamp. It was really easy to find our person, who grabbed our bags and loaded them into the trailer while we sat in the van. Met some others that were on the trip on the way to the lodge. Upon arrival they had a tent setup in the front where they greeted us, gave us a bag with a map of the property and list of that week's activities, told us our rooms weren't ready yet but they would find us when they were. Now - I'm going to note that they said they would find us when our room was ready and I didn't think they really would. We continued to check in to see when the room would be ready, but then later I saw them literally hunting someone down to give her keys - so they will indeed find you. When we checked in the room was a standard lodge room, we had a fridge but our friends didn't, in mentioning this in passing to the staff they brought them a fridge. Talk about service! We spent the next four days riding horses mostly, but also enjoying the company of the other guests and hearing stories from the staff. While we were really heavy on the horse rides we also enjoyed taking a tour of the elk preserve and clay sporting. We got a ride up to the yoga spot for a view (weren't too keen on hiking up there) and spent a good amount of time in the bar with fellow guests chatting up the staff. Everyone was amazing and so accommodating- I had said it was a bucket list trip but the staff at the Averill ranch has me seriously considering returning next year. Thank you for the memories.

The accommodations were even more luxurious than expected and the people on the ranch became family. Chuck, Dave, Deb and Mikayla made us feel like we were guests in their home. Absolutely Incredible Trail Ride!…read more This was hands-down one of the best horseback riding experiences I've ever had! Jaeli, our lead guide, was amazing--informative, calm, and so kind. She gave clear safety instructions with great explanations and focused on what to do for the best ride possible. Shelby, who rode in the back, was super supportive and made sure no one got left behind. The horses? Beautiful, well-cared-for, and each with their own personality. We loved learning that all the horses live in Montana year-round under the care of one dedicated owner who knows and loves them deeply. That kind of consistency and attention really stood out. The trail took us through peaceful backwoods and up to a ridge with stunning views. Jaeli even offered to snap photos of our group at the top--so thoughtful! At the end walking our horse we rode to get water was icing on the cake ~ best time talking to the horse and loving on him. It was a great send off ~ see the pictures!! If you're looking for a safe, scenic, and genuinely memorable trail ride--this is it! Highly recommend!

Tried calling several times, no answer. Went on line to their booking page via acuity. The MHW rider info form specifically states " please complete this form AFTER you have booked your trail ride via Acuity. If you have not booked yet, stop here and return once your reservation is confirmed." They stated the riders have to be 10 years old. We have a 9 y/o. Other places allowed him to ride with mom. So we booked 2 rides the next day. Still not able to contact them. Then we filled out their rider form. At the bottom of the form it says also " no double riding" and also minium age was 10. This was 7 at night and no way to contact them. Called Saturday morning and told them the situation. They basically said too bad. You didn't cancel within the 2 week minimum so you lose the deposit. However on my credit card, they charged be full price for both slots saying it was all on their website which I never saw. DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE!! SAVE YOUR MONEY AND BOOK WITH A REPUTABLE PROVIDER. I'm a local physician and I have never seen such poor treatment. There must have been a reason they had a number of last minute slots open when everyone else was fully booked. Don't believe their "star" rating.

My friend and I shared our guide Abigail Lichens on Stormy with a mother on Sonny and daughter on Otto. I rode Nightlinger and my friend was on Mugshot. All of the horses were well cared for and really good looking horses. They had their own personalities; they like to snack and rub against trees and branches along the trail, even though we did our best to keep them from snacking and going off trail. There was a fallen tree on the trail that the horses navigated around fairly easily. Abigail informed the people at the corral about the fallen tree to have it cleared and filled us in about plants, wildlife, trees and the area. She was friendly and very helpful. Her first priority was safety. All of us had a fantastic time.

BEST GUEST RANCH UNDER THE BIG SKY!!!…read more What an incredible experience! The Bar W Guest Ranch went above and beyond to make my stay exceptional. Clean comfortable accommodations in a picturesque setting, knowledgeable, helpful staff made my Adults Only week one to remember. I traveled alone but never felt that way thanks to the incredible hospitality the staff offers, but I can see how the ranch would also be the perfect place for couples, girlfriend getaways, and family vacations. The food was plentiful, good, and healthy and they make adjustments per the guests' preferences or dietary concerns. I rode to my heart's content, which is what I came here to do. The horses are gorgeous and healthy and treated well. I was a little rusty, not having ridden in a while, but the staff had me feeling confident after the first day. I would definitely recommend the Bar W to anyone looking for an exceptional quest ranch experience. I loved it so much, I hope to come back next year!

Safety demonstration was super easy and we got comfortable quickly on our horses. My only two cons: First, I felt two hours was too long - this is my personal opinion. I was very sore by the end and I got a bit bored about halfway through. Second, it was pretty quiet the whole ride. There was no explanations or guiding, little to no conversation - which is definitely hard when you're in a line. For two hours, the silence just made it feel long. Overall, this was a great and unique experience and Bar W does a great job!
