Support your local businesses is always encouraged in every neighborhood. When it pertains to Beastly Bite, I'll make an appearance occasionally when I am running out of cat food. Years ago, Beastly Bite was located across the street although I've no idea if they were the same owners. Regarding this store, there's a sign on the window stating that they are family owned and run and " your business is appreciated". Here's the scoop. I think pet stores might be trending as a dying business. As another pet store in Carroll Gardens admitted, they cannot compete with online websites. For the most part--true--as I usually do most of my pet food/supplies shopping via Chewy.com. and even their prices have recently risen. But back to Beastly Bite. The store contains a decent variety of cat food (can't speak of dog food) but not as much as Petco & Unleashed. Still, my cats being as fussy as they are, Beastly Bite carries the ONE brand my cats will eat which is why I shop there occasionally. Their prices are $0.20 more per can than the online store I mentioned earlier. The store is spacious, bright and immaculate. Most of a cat's needs can be found here: litter, carriers, toys, collars, scratching posts (although any cat owner knows that cats will scratch where they please) and wet/dry food. I never know who the owners are but have seen the same two guys rotate at the register depending on the day of the week/schedule. Lukewarm friendly. I like to support my local businesses but also need to be financially practical. They carry the brand I need which is why they're my back up store. read more

Lots of selection from your standard brands to more organic. Dog loves all the treat selection and we'll go in there on walks and just pick out a new one to try. Very accommodating also! They've got the good mice. I don't know about your middling cat's pedestrian tastes, but my cat is a connoisseur. He turns his splendidly shaped nose up at the neon green/pink, unrealistic mice that one finds in the PetSmart around the corner. He will only play with mice of the the classic grey variety, found in the back right corner of Beastly Bite. If only I could figure out where he hides them all, I would be able to stop buying them every month. Seriously, WHERE ARE THEY?! Our apartment is not that big. Beyond mice purchases, the staff at Beastly Bite has been perfectly nice, and somewhat helpful. I would love to say that all my pet needs are fulfilled here (I want to support local businesses more than anyone), but unfortunately most of the food is priced at a substantial markup over other outlets, and it's pretty tough to swallow that on a regular basis. That said, they do have a very fat cat that I thought was a pillow on my first few visits. So there's that. read more

Beastly Bite is the perfect neighborhood independent pet business. The owner is incredibly accommodating with ordering specific foods for our dog Maisie and he always remembers what kind she likes. When we needed to switch food brands recently, he was very helpful with suggestions for what she might enjoy better. That's the kind of customer service you won't get at Petsmart or Petco! I've always found the guys in there friendly - they are nice to both my wife and I. As far as prices, I have never compared the price for the big ol bag of cat litter anywhere else, but they are the closest to where I live and the bag is heavy. Cat food. Cat litter. Open late-ish. I honestly don't understand the bad reviews for this place, the employees might not "chat you up", but they're far from being rude. They are always very helpful and friendly whenever I stop in. In fact, my cat need special food for her bladder, that i can't find anywhere else, and the few times they were out they called their sister store in Carroll Gardens to see if they had any, without me having to ask. I feel lucky to have two good pet supply stores in walking distance of my apartment. True, the staff doesn't kiss up as much as some places in the neighborhood, but I don't need retail workers to grovel and scrape before me in order to have decent self-esteem. Seriously, if store clerks acting like your equals makes you feel bad, you should be checking Yelp for therapist reviews, not pet supply stores. They do an excellent job stocking food. I usually go to the place on Smith Street first, because it's closer to me and more on my way home from things, but if they are out of what I need, it is always at Beastly Bite. read more

The only thing the store has going for it is that they deliver. Otherwise be ready to pay incredibly inflated prices and contend with the rude, off-putting staff. Local pet supplies store that had great prices, and has a ton of stuff to choose from. The staff are always nice and if you need help they will help you, if you don't they stay by the registrar. woof, in a bad way. the inventory is good, but the staff sucks. the same dude is always there, and always on the phone. if i ask a question, he says 'i don't know' and then keeps talking on the phone. i used to stop in since it's right next to Trader Joe's but now i am boycotting because when i go into a pet store, i want to talk to pet lovers and someone who is knowledgable about the product. I really like this store right around the corner on Smith St called Loving Pet Food. Nothing but helpful, friendly staff. I Have been coming here since we moved into Carroll Gardens. They order what you need if it's not in stock. They carry the novel non-chicken/beef protein foods my allergic pittie needs. Prices are comparable if not a tiny bit better than other small pet stores in the neighborhood. Seems like a decent spot to buy silly things for your pets...went in here and dropped 50 bucks on a new scratching post (which my cat refuses to scratch, ha), cat food, and a realllly fun (for cat and human) toy. I got some good advice about which pet food to buy (I knew Science Diet was not good, but it was explained to me...down with weird preservatives!). Overall, convenient to me from work, has good hours, and can be helpful if poked and prodded a bit. read more

Well, some say the staff is uncaring but I've been coming here for about 20 years and it is a big improvement over the old days when they had a super-scary boss who was very gruff. The staff now is quite laid back and it does take time to get to know them. But once you do they are very nice and funny and kind. It may not seem that way to people who've only been living here for a few years as so many people do but can you blame them for not wearing their hearts on their sleeves when so many customers will be moving on to new digs in the 'burbs or elsewhere once they start having kids? Just think of how cats are and let the staff come to you. They may not take a shine to everyone but I promise, they are really very friendly once you get to know them. read more

I love this place. I think all the bad reviews are funny (and a lot of them are way old). The guy behind the counter during the week is just shy, and the guy on the weekends is a doll, very chatty. You do have to know what you want if you are ordering a delivery, since there's no "menu" to order from. I just made a list when I was in the store, and now I can order when I need more, or go by. They have a good inventory and the store is clean. Plus they have lots of store cats that they have rescued -- always good, in my book. read more

This store is well stocked, clean, and they will deliver. They stock everything we need for our two cats and they have a great selection of the basics like dry food, kitty litter and cat food. The employees are usually knowledgeable, helpful, pleasant and friendly, although late at night they sometimes seem tired, not surprisingly. I too like the atmosphere at Loving Pet Food on Smith Street, but their selection is not as good, and I much prefer the clever name "Beastly BIte." read more

I used to go to a pet shop in the West Village that was so incredibly friendly; knew all the customers names and their pets names. The place was always packed. This place couldn't be more different. Doesn't matter how many times I've been in there, I never get a hello. Never an acknowledgement that I exist. Yet it has this sign in the window to support local business. Guys, nothing would make me happier than to support you, but you need to be an actual part of the community. Engage with your customers. Make it a pleasant place to visit. I had long avoided this business because I heard that in the Park Slope location they mistreated a store cat. Fast forward many years and I am in a desperate rush to get a pet gift and am flying out of town the next morning. I brought an unmarked Cat Dancer toy up to the register, and they tried to charge me $7.99! These are about $3 everywhere else! A glance around the store told me other items are also marked up a lot. Now I am reading that they have a store cat they let get unhealthily obese. Makes me so sad. Forget this place! read more

Great neighborhood pet store, I have been shopping here for years. The guy who usually works there is great, he always remembers me and says hello, even remembers what kind of pets I have... Plus they have three adorable store cats, and I usually also manage to pet a customer's dog or two while in there. They have a reasonable selection at decent prices - it's not a huge chain, big box store so they can't have miles of choices, but I much prefer a small mom-and-pop store. Some items, like my cat's favorite toy, the paw-breaker, I haven't been able to find anywhere else, so I keep going back to Beastly Bite! read more

Beastly Bites has a a morbidly obese cat. The cat is so fat that she can barely walk and is unable to clean herself. Her fur is dirty and she kind of smells. When a cat is that big, they can't properly clean themselves and the fact that she kind of smells tells me they don't clean the litter box, which I'm sure is located in the basement. This is pure and total neglect and coming from a pet store I find this quite disturbing. The fact that the cat is so big tells me that they just put out dry food and allow the cat to graze. Cats are not grazers, they are hunters. Doing this messes with their metabolism. She will have diabetes for sure. And judging from the condition of her coat, lack of shine and overall texture of her fur, she isn't fed healthy food either. No moist food, just dry. When I questioned the man working there if they ever brush the cat, he said they do. I asked him for the brush so I could brush her and he couldn't find one, which means in a store full of pet supplies, they don't use one on their cat. I took one off the shelf, bought it and brushed her. Her coat was loaded with knots and it is dirty and flaky from lack of care. She is the sweetest cat, so I don't believe she is physically abused, just emotionally neglected. This would be expected at the local bodega, but at a pet store! I am ashamed for them. Not sure what some of these negative reviews are about. This store has the best toys, the best food, the best litter, the best catsitting contacts and most importantly, the guy who works there remembers who I am, when I've been on vacation and asks how it was, make recommendations about my cat's behavioral issues and generally improves my day in a way that doesn't try to sell me things. Maybe it's a bit more expensive than other stores, I have not noticed. If you're worried about differences of pennies, maybe you don't love your pet as much as you should. read more
