I just completed my will and trust as well as other related documents with Beatrice and her team. As a child of immigrants who has had to figure things out alongside my sisters and friends who are also children of immigrants, I felt the need to find an attorney who not only was an expert in this field but was also someone who was willing to help me learn about the process. My sister and her husband initiated contact with Beatrice and her team and now our entire family has had our wills and trusts done by her! Before I even committed to working with Beatrice, she must have spent about 3 hours just educating me about the estate planning process. I actually talked to two other attorneys, including the attorney who had originally helped my parents with their will and trust about 14 years ago. After cross-referencing multiple reviews of different estate law services in Orange County and LA County, hands-down the ones that impressed me the most were about Beatrice Phan. Sometimes I make great decisions when intoxicated. My friend asked me if I was interested in 'drinking while planning for the end-of-life'. I was like... I'm down, sounds like fun. I thought we were going to play some board games like dungeon and dragons while at a brewery. But it turned out to be at wine tasting event discussing "wills". WTH?! Buzz kill right?! G out! Honestly, I wanted to cancel after hearing the details of the event. Bah. In any case, I really dislike canceling out on friends, so I decided to go and besides... free wine. Yes, please. But slowly as the talk by Beatrice went on, I realized that my living trust (created from some website) was basically notes with no legal binding agreement, and the house that I own would go to probate if I died; And other stuff like... health, etc. Man, I was so uninformed before the talk. I personally have known Bea for over 15 years now. What I didn't know about is what to do when someone passes away, especially when it's someone close to you. It's hard enough that you have to deal with grief, but the red tape that follows is just absolute madness. I had a glimpse of this when my own father passed away; I was not prepared or ready to deal with the bureaucracy. I reached out for help from my friend. After attending her free work shop on the whole process, I realized that a living trust was so much more. With a complex martial situation, I felt that the living trust was such a valuable asset for my family. Why so valuable? As an example, anything you leave a minor child without a guardian will automatically go to probate. This will not only triggers an automatic percentages charged to the total amount on your asset, but the time it takes to go through the process. In addition, the attorney fees will be greater than the amount you pay for the living trust. Hopefully, this helps someone else out before it will cost them an arm and a leg. Bea is not a sales person. (She's terrible at it) She won't be trying to sell you anything other than to help. She will walk you through the process and still "Bea" there after you're done with the process. 2005-'06 were difficult years for me when my then-wife asked for divorce. I gave her EVERYTHING (for a speedy process) n moved into a rental with only 2 suit cases driving 1 of my sister's cars. I remember i put down my suit cases in the entrance of my rental n cried in dismay at how my life came to that point. But i knew it was time to roll up my sleeves because there were 2 kids to raise. 12 yrs later, today, 1 kid is finishing engineering school n the 2nd kid is planning a path to med school. The crying guy 12 yrs ago with only 2 suit cases to his name went from having a tough time paying rent to owning that condo, a fair stock portfolio n 2 rental properties by way of cheap credits, thoughtful investments n crazy good luck not to mention business partners who were determined to include me in every great deals; cannot thank them enough. I gave back my sister's car n went from a used Toyota to a new Toyota. All was too good to be true until i fell off my bicycle ended up in a coma n when i woke up i realized i hav came to a point in life where i needed a LIVING TRUST for my kids. My family doctor told me that he had his living trust done n set me up for an appointment with his living trust lawyer, Ms Beatrice Phan. The first meeting was informative. Beatrice meticulously (i will use that word a lot) explained how probate court eats up time/money n how living trust protects my assets n how assets will be passed on to my kids. Within 5 minutes i knew living trust was the way for me to protect my assets n family. I highly recommend a pad of paper with a pen plus 3 cups of coffee because there was important information n Beatrice was...high energy. I walked outta Beatrice's office totally committed to proceed. I did not get that done in 1-go. Beatrice was meticulous with every document follow up. Dox-gathering turned into an educational journey. I did not know how to get ALL NEEDED DOX n had to hav Beatrice guide me, twice, real-time on the phone. I went thru several doc searches, divorce papers, escrow dox, bank accounts, proper bank accnt creation, etc. Beatrice was always patient in her guidance n supportive/helpful at every turn. As it turned out, the biggest part of the job of creating the trust was all the info/dox gathering n then transfer assets into the trust. Admittedly, my case was a bit messy and Beatrice actually straightened out several weak points in my assets. Not only do i now hav a functional living trust but my business n business holdings are all solid n, in some cases, legal. I did set up a few things wrongly. Beatrice helped me with proper structure for ANY future business expansions. Gone are the days of "...i think it is...but i'm not too sure..." Most importantly, both my kids now know exactly what to do, where they stand n where everything is. It's been a tumultuous 12 years but, now-a-days, i breath easier because i am..."trusted". We had our original trust prepared in 2017. The attorney who prepared our trust presented us with some basic information about the process. After we signed the trust documents at the attorney's office, along with electronic copies of our trust, health directives and power of attorneys, we were provided a paper with some general trust funding instructions. We were however not clear on what needed to be done. As a result, after three years, other than our house, nothing else has been transferred to the trust. Even though we thought we had a trust in place, if something had happened to both of us, our children would have no idea what assets we had. We happened to attend a seminar on Wills & Trusts by Beatrice in October 2019. It was very informative as well as enjoyable. Beatrice had a way to make legal concepts and issues sound simple and easy to understand. She presented real life scenarios, with lessons to learn, and mistakes to avoid. After that seminar, we asked Beatrice to review and if need be, amend or prepare a new living trust for us. First, Beatrice is very thorough and dedicated. She would go the extra mile to help get the information that the client needs but does not have. For example, Beatrice needed to have access to the original deed of our property to determine whether it was properly transferred. We could not locate it. Beatrice was not able to look it up online. She reached out to a former colleague who happened to be in the real estate business for help. And that evening, before our meeting, to our surprise and delight, she was able to get a copy of our deed. Second, Beatrice is very honest. After reviewing our original trust, she told us that overall it was okay, but she thought it needed some amendments. She explained to us that some parts of that trust clearly were not what we intended. Third, Beatrice is very meticulous and organized. She had a long questionnaire that took some time to fill out, but once it was filled out, it would expedite the subsequent funding process tremendously. Fourth, Beatrice is very responsive and accessible. For example, we had some questions when we filled out the questionnaire, and after we uploaded the questionnaire, Beatrice promptly called us to address our questions. Finally, Beatrice's instructions are very detailed and extremely helpful. After we finalized and executed the trust, she provided us with a "Funding toolkit", which includes: (1) an excel copy of all our assets that need to be transferred into the trust, including account numbers, with clear description of "action needed"; and (2) a word copy of "General Instructions for use of self-funding Toolkit". With that "funding toolkit", we were able to transfer most of our assets into the Trust within two weeks. Beatrice also gave us a very practical recommendation that we keep copies of our documents accessible and known to our children. Now with the trust mostly funded, and copies of relevant trust and health directive documents accessible and known to our children, we feel at peace that regardless what may happen to us, our children will know what to do and what assets we have.
