When you book this walking history tour ask if Janet will be giving you tour. If not don't take it !!!!! Our Charleston based tour planner and staff at our Beaufort B and B raved about Janet's tour and how she brings the city of Beaufort and its magnificent homes and history to life. Unfortunately her delegate who gave us our tour on June 5 was UNACCEPTABLE. I believer we would have enjoyed our two hours more just walking around on our own. We learned more of Beaufort's history, houses and residents on our Dolphins Adventures Tour than we did with this replacement guide. There were only 4 of us on the tour and the guide spent the entire time talking with two phd child psychology students, a couple, trying to impress them with his knowledge of their field of study. He spent more time on this than talking about Beaufort. We traditionally love walking tours as it allows for engagement with the guide etc. We were ignored like we were not even on the tour zero engagement the exact opposite of every other one of our tours on our two week trip. . A church was unlocked for us to walk in. Unfortunately a number of others sauntered in the open door and we had to wait a good 15 minutes while the others moseyed around the interior used the bathroom (queued) etc. as our guide had to wait until they left. A golf cart tour is one of the best ways to cover a lot of ground and experience what Beaufort has to offer. We took the history and movies tour as part of a quick day trip into Beaufort. Parking was easy to find in the waterfront marina departure point. Raul led the tour, and did a decent job in covering the history of Beaufort and going over both history and architecture of homes in the area, as well as pointing out where some movies were filmed locally. I liked that the tour ventured out of the historic part of town to go to the Beaufort National Cemetery, as it's one of those places people visiting would otherwise likely skip out on. Overall, I'd rate the tour 4 stars, as I didn't like it as much as other Atlantic coastal town tours I've done in the past (Southport, for example), and this tour was a bit more expensive in comparison (but still worth it). I also thought it was a bit much to be told to leave a review by the guide, and also receive messages via both email and text message to review as well. read more

Great tour! Bill was extraordinary! He really knows his stuff- all the history in Beaufort about the civil war, plantations, movie filming locations including Forrest Gump, White Squalls, Prince of Tides, Great Santini... and all houses where actors lived during filming. He also explained the history and architecture behind the buildings on the tour that were fascinating. We also appreciated Bill taking the time pulling over in front of the buildings or locations to talk to our app- Otter (that transcribed what's being said) so that we could be part and understood the tour. Much appreciated for being accommodating. The golf cart is comfortable and has seat belts so we felt it was safe for our toddlers. Highly recommended for a tour near downtown Beaufort. We enjoyed a wonderful tour with Janet, which included a three-hour van-based overview of Beaufort highlights, Dataw Island plantation ruins, and best of all St. Helena Island. We were hoping to learn more about Gullah culture and local history - the good, the bad, and the ugly - and that is exactly what we received from a knowledgeable, culturally sensitive, and courteous guide. The Mercedes sprinter van was spacious and comfortable, and Janet was able to speak over a microphone with a video display on a screen near the front. The Beaufort portion of the tour was perfect for people interested in learning about the homes, architecture, citizens of note, and Hollywood connections, in other words, a great introduction to steer your future solo ventures. The real highlights were outside of town where Janet's special access to tabby ruins at Dataw Island set this tour apart from others. Ask Janet questions! It is clear that she has a passion for reading, learning, and teaching. She's added to my list of must-watch documentaries and recommended reading. The true highlight was St. Helena Island. Janet has access to the Coffin Point Praise House. I learned about things that I am embarrassed to admit I knew little about, including Gullah Geechee culture. Reading about heir property and title injustices is on my list. If you're looking to get out from behind the gates of your resort community, I recommend Beaufort Tours - ask for Janet. read more

Had friends visiting from Wisconsin who are history buffs and love the Beaufort area. Bill, our guide is personable and very knowledgeable regarding the history of Beaufort. We really enjoyed seeing the area by golf cart as it was comfortable and because they use wireless headsets it was very easy to hear the guide. Overall, it felt like a private tour. read more

I have been on quite a few tours in the area and the plantation tour I took this day was by far the best! Our tour guide Kelly was so knowledgeable and entertaining. We got to meet her dad who wrote the book "Gullah Mailman". We went to several plantations stopping along the way to hear stories of the area. My favorite was when we stopped by a cemetery and Kelly let us know that the Gullah people said we could get out, if we wanted to. However, we had to walk backwards both in and out of the cemetery as to not let the spirits in or out. This particular place had a 400 year old tree sitting right in the middle. Boy, if that tree could tell stories! Don't miss out on taking this tour if you are in town. I am going to retake it because I here you'll learn something new or go to new places each time. Took my mom to Beaufort for the day and booked this tour online. We have been to Beaufort previously and taken a tour with a different company in the past but this one was much more informative and interesting. I am the type that usually gets restless and uncomfortable but it was a very comfortable ride in the van and I could have ridden around and listened to Bill all day. It really shows how much he loves Beaufort and how involved he is in researching the information he gives in the tour. I was glad also that this was an easy tour to take my elderly mother on as well. read more

James was our driver on the Movie/History one hour tour through Beaufort. There were five of us from our family and we were the only customers which made the tour very personalized. I learned more from James on this tour than I did a few years ago it was very interesting. James was very accommodating and even took extra time on the tour which lasted 1 1/2 hours. Billed as Gullah and Plantation Tour, it wasn't. At $60 per person, irresponsibly expensive, too. Instead of a Gullah & Plantation tour, we received the meaty oral history of our guide, Beaufort Kelly. We slowed by the billboard that advertised her former boyfriend. We gazed at the horizon where she was sent for school, and to another island, where she shot her first deer. We cut into the property where her dad put up his Sears & Roebuck mail order home. We glanced at the blur of white porch in town where she used to babysit. We listened to how she went from an insurance agent in heels to a shotgun owner with a Leopold scope after some ill defined dispute (and outcome) with her ex. Fascinating, and maybe worth $60 as a case study for a social anthropologist. NOT worth it for me. So where was the Gullah part? Buried in some lingering Confederate sentiment perhaps. Out there on the Island, Penn Center today is 19 historic buildings including a museum marking 300 years of habitation. At least that's what I found out after the tour. At Penn Center's former church cum school, we stopped without getting out of the van. Then, we were driven away from the rest of the Penn Center grounds completely. If I had been aware of what we were blowing past, I would have demanded that we stop. But ignorance in the back seat wasn't making a Gulah tour happen. While pulled over, Kelly emphasized the difference between a grave yard and a church yard. OK? She told us more than once that she was educated with a University history degree. She had read the Penn founding teacher's diary. She summarized with a quote about teaching "the savages," and she frequently referred to the 10,000 slaves as "contraband," without further explanation. We later learned elsewhere that this was a pejorative term used by the Civil War militia for runaway slaves. I asked about the consortium of Gullah who combined their monies to pay unpaid taxes and gain ownership of tracts of land after Emancipation. She said it didn't happen. We asked what people did to earn a living on the island now. It appeared from the drive by that rice growing by conscripted Africans 200 years ago had been replaced with tomato crops tended by Hispanics. She took us to the road where the latest drug bust had been made, and said she scans the newspaper's Wanted mug shots each day. We passed a young Black man on a bike. She said there's a lot of crime on the island now and "those people" don't work, don't want to work, and just collect welfare. Ever heard that before? Cringe worthy. Later I saw on the Gullah heritage website that Gullah Tours was not a sponsor. Pretty mean, considering that this company exploits the culture and profits from the come-on. The only time we got out of the van was at a reportedly vacant plantation house sitting behind an untended pecan grove. We were invited to look in the windows from the porch, and to watch out for the fire ants that carpeted the ground. We contrived a reason to return a half hour early, and Kelly said OK, but ignored the request, preferring to roll in at high Noon with a self congratulatory comment that she was right to the minute. My husband and I took the 2 hour walking tour with Collin. We were they only ones on the tour, so we got to ask a lot of questions and have a personalized tour! Collin was very knowledgeable on the history of Beaufort and growing up there, knew a lot about Pat Conroy, who is my favorite author. He told us personal stories of knowing the author and even pointed out the Italian restaurant where Conroy would eat every week. Over all it was a wonderful tour of the beautiful town. I very much enjoyed it and would suggest taking this tour to anyone. Even though it was very hot that day, it was worth it to walk around where some of my favorite movies were filmed and see those famous places in person. We learned a lot of the history of Beaufort and some of the surrounding islands too. We had a delightful time!! read more

Went on a tour with Trisha. She is not from Beaufort. She brought her creepy eyed husband along and every time I looked up he was staring at me. It was more of a architecture tour than haunted stories! She told maybe 3 ghost stories in 90 min and only 1 was local. read more

Tour guide never showed for morning walking tour. We brought friends visiting from Kentucky, got them up at dawn, drove 40 minutes and NO TOUR. No one answered phone. Nothing. The next day I received a full refund and verbal apology, but that does not make it right. read more

Just took the History & Movie Tour, and had a great time! I would like to see & hear more about the movies, and less about the history, but that's just me. This is a van tour, in which you never get out of the vehicle. They need to do a little work on the AC, as the back of the van gets pretty warm during the summer! Our guide was funny, and personable!
