Decent tour, insightful facts and history about mainly the Point neighborhood (historical houses in downtown), highlights on Robert Smalls & a sneak peek of Civil War hospital history. Our horse was Bandit and our guide Kirsten who was very easy to like! The only questionable statement was that they say they only do 4 tours a day for their horses, but after spending the day downtown- we noticed it was the same two horses all day. I'm not a horse expert, and they are Belgian horses which do like to work, with the carriages packed at 4 people per seat I just hope they really do take the horses to a 15 acre farm at the end of the day. If I were to have the opportunity to do the tour again with someone who's never done it, I wouldn't do it again simply because it was $27-32 a tour for 50 mins. However, I wouldn't persuade anyone NOT to do it because you will definitely learn something new about the rich history of Beaufort! read more

I wasn't wild about doing a carriage tour. We had done one in Charleston, SC and I wasn't impressed. My wife talked me into it though, and I'm glad she did! This was a wonderful tour. We got to hear so much about the history of Beaufort as we toured the Historic District. Our tour guide, Charlotte, was super friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable! The good experience began even at check-in though. The young lady who checked us in, Anastasia, was equally as enthusiastic and friendly. It was such a pleasure seeing these young ladies as they worked together at the beginning and end of the tour. They obviously got along well, loved working together, loved working with the horse, Max, and loved working with their guests! A great, informative tour of a beautiful area rich in history by a wonderful staff. My wife and I would absolutely recommend this tour as a thing to do while visiting Beaufort! read more

She gave them both little plastic animals to play with and to keep. she was extremely knowledgeable and charismatic. Rose who is the owner of the carriage ride was extremely flexible and patient with me as I was trying to book a carriage for a ladies outing from my church. I kept having to change the number of people. And she was extremely flexisble slmost right up to the point of us getting on the carriage. They care greatly for their horses. Rocky, a beautiful white horse, lead our four-row carriage through historical Beaufort. Our guide is very knowledgeable about Beaufort's historical significance and is an excellent story teller. He shared about the Civil War, the various styles and architectural designs of the homes we passed, as well as a small piece of movie presence that Hollywood gifted Beaufort. The carriage seats were comfortable and the roof provided coverage from the sun and tree branches. Our guide also pointed out the arbors and horticulture of the area. The living oaks were amazing. It's hard to believe that these strong roots and trunks have been around for hundreds of years surviving many storms, flooding, and other natural disasters. The low level land is only nine feet above sea level! Many homes were built accordingly with added protection from the elements and flooding. Some of the roads and ground were made from Tabby; a mixture of sea shells, sand, water, ash. Loved our experience so much that I plan on looking up and reading more about the Civil War in this area. read more

This was my first carriage ride. We did so in October, 2014 and it was wonderful! The driver was so knowledgeable and pretty funny too! Though I've lived locally for 9 years, there was so much I did not know about Beaufort, and it's history. The homes that we saw were absolutely beautiful and just made you want to live there! He took us on some back roads that I don't normally travel, and I am so glad that he did. Also, as a long time horse woman and previous owner of many horses in my lifetime, I was a bit hesitant to ride this carriage, I always feel so bad for the horses and what they must go through. However, I was relieved to hear the care our driver took with our horse, and how gentle he was with him. There were signs posted about how they relieve their horses and do not over work them. The horses did look healthy and well-cared for...at least from what I could see. I especially enjoyed the definitions our driver gave of some long time sayings like "saved by the bell" and "dead ringer", etc. Apparently these were coined from past incidents of folks being buried alive...EEEEEEEK! It was very interesting. He also told us about Tom Hanks and Barbara Streisand's filming there and many things I had never known about the things they did while there. We were so inspired by the facts we learned about the cemeteries that we even went back after to walk in them. I felt like the ride was a good length of time...though it was so enjoyable I would have enjoyed even longer. I am sure it would be hard for other riders though, like the child in front of me that was complaining of hunger and having to go to the bathroom :-). As a mom, I know that can be challenging. So, probably not the best ride for a young child. I would say kids 8 and above would enjoy it. All in all, definitely recommend. Plus, it helped ease the pain of the horrible Bed & Breakfast we were staying in, as it helped us get away from it for a while. You can read about that in another post :-)! read more

I've done this carriage tour around Beaufort a few times and it's certainly a delightful way to see the town. Lots of historical facts along with fun anecdotes about the recent movies that have been filmed and where the stars have stayed. I'll admit that I've been really wary of past carriage tours that operate in the southern summers and how they treat their horses. I was relieved to read Southurn Rose's policy on keeping their horses healthy and happy, and I do believe that they keep and eye on everything. It was easy to hear your guide, comfortable on the buggy, and they took excellent COVID precautions! So thankful for our tour guide - I wish I could remember her name. We had a lot of people, 4 Adults and 1 child. 1 Adult is petite (5 feet tall), that's me with my 4 year old daughter. So when its time to get on the carriage, they seat us in the back row. There are 5 rows of seats. At first I asked, could I sit closer to the front so I could see, but they said no. The entire ride I was looking at taller people's shoulders. A lot of fat people too. My daughter could not see either. Well I guess we could see the pee from the back of the carriage on the street after the carriage passed an area where the beautiful large horse pee'd. He was a retired Omish working horse from Ohio I heard. But come on people, look at your customers. If you've got young children and petite women, please, put us in the front 2 rows of the carriage. They saw all the people there and should be paying attention to the heights of there passengers. Also the tour guide made some errors. Historical Architectual things we know because we are into historic architecture. When we heard her say the wrong thing, we spoke up to correct the girl. Also its a little annoying when tour guides use fillers of jokes together with the ride which is like, no that is not the historical point. I expect more from these services. Study up and do better next time! This could be a lot more fun if they just improve there services. Know your customer and if they are fat or large, seat them in the front. If there are small children or petite women, put us where we can see and hear. That was another problem, could not hear or see the tour guide with all the taller fat people in front. read more
