We relocated to the area in late December and I have been dreading the process of finding a new colorist. After reading multiple reviews I scheduled an appointment with Sun. Because she is so busy I had to wait two weeks but I had already waited three months at this point. And it was worth the wait! I've always previously gotten highlights every 6 weeks but after a thorough consultation and showing her pictures from my Pinterest board, we decided to go with a balayage technique. While more expensive and time consuming I'm so happy she introduced me to this technique. My hair looks amazing and I feel so much better. I had been searching for a hair stylist for the last 7 years now since my other moved away and have only found one disappointment after the other. My hair is baby fine and naturally curly. I have gotten highlights for 20 years and the length of my hair is past my shoulders (med). Since he left I have been going to other stylists hoping to find that special one that knows not only how to make me feel beautiful, but protect my hair as well. Since my daring search, my hair has been over processed (fried) cut off more than 5 inches at a time when asking for a trim more than I can count, to simply destroying my hair. This is my first official Yelp review (even though I use this site religiously). What motivated me to finally take the plunge? The absolutely amazing experience I had with Sun. I live in New York City, salon capital of the world. I have, however, always struggled to find an affordable salon that could deal with my incredibly fine and thin hair. My family lives in the area, and as I was coming home for the holidays, I decided to try someone here...which led me to Sun. From the moment I walked into until the moment I left, I couldn't believe how tremendous the experience was. She took the time to hear what I wanted, but also provided her opinion about what would work/wouldn't work. She really knows her stuff. She gave me advice on cut and color that no one had ever taken the time to do. What surprised me the most? She taught me how to style my hair. She gave me all sorts of advice and ideas and as she was styling it explained how to to do everything. The color she did was amazing and certainly the best I've ever had. Most importantly, I understand WHY we went with that color because she took the time (wasn't rushing) to explain every detail. The cut is awesome. Sun is fantastic! I recently moved the area and tried out Beauty by Sun in the hope that she could fix my not-so-great haircut. She did all that and more! She serves wine with every haircut and tries to make you feel as comfortable as possible. She won't try and sell you products throughout the entire appointment and she actually tries all the products she sells so she can give an honest opinion. She showed me how to style my hair in a way that looks great and gave me realistic information about how often to shampoo for my hair style and the types of products I would need. I have pretty thick, frizzy, slightly wavy hair, which can be really hard to cut. Not only has Sun done a great job cutting my hair, but she's also helped me figure out how to tone down the frizziness. I've been to chain salons, designer salons, and everything in between and i can say, without a doubt, that the haircut/hair style/hair advice from Sun is the best I've ever gotten. I arrived with bad layers/cut. Sun not only told me that my hair was too short for my neckline, but also how to cut it to tame my cowlick. She explained everything she was doing and exactly how my hair was growing that the wrong cut produced unfavorable results. I met Sun when I was getting my hair done for a friend's wedding. She was so polite and knowledgeable that I immediately booked an appointment for my mom who had never found a hairstylist she liked enough to see more than a couple times. We have both been seeing Sun for a year and a half now. She has an incredible sense of color and after some convincing, I trusted her experience and let her dye my hair red. I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do to my hair, just that I needed a change. Sun told me about balayage and showed me a picture of beautiful hair that she did and talked me into it for my appointment. I was so excited! She asked me twice to come in earlier for my appt so she would have plenty of time to do my hair. Got to my appointment and an hour into it she proceeded to talk me OUT of doing the balayage. She said it takes too long and she hates doing it and it's so much work and that it's much more expensive (but wouldn't give me a definite figure). Remember SHE was the one that suggested it to me in the first place! I said ok just do regular highlights then, but I was really disappointment she had hyped up the balayage and then didn't want to do it (it seemed like a bait and switch). She very quickly cut my hair after the coloring and then simply blow dried it (no styling at all) and I was rushed out as another customer was coming in. I left there with a cut I didn't love and highlights you could not even see. Even weeks later, you cannot tell my hair was even highlighted at all. So bummed with the whole experience. What was worse though is my daughter had an appointment for the following Saturday but when she found out last minute she had a basketball tournament I wrote Sun to ask to reschedule and she never even responded to me! No phone call, no response, nothing. We will not be back. read more

Sun has been my hair muse for the last three years. It is not an exaggeration to say that she has truly changed my relationship with my hair. When I first met Sun, I was lost when it came to knowing what to do with my hair. I was the ponytail mom. What really makes her stand out as a stylist is that she truly cares that you look beautiful & goes out of her way to make sure you do. That makes her a rare gem in my opinion. My hair is naturally a mousy medium brown color, thick and straight. She manages to make the color blonde and it looks really good and natural.
