Came in for coloring. Asked for ash brown balayage/ombré and showed a couple of different pictures, all slight variations but basically same concept. Explained I wanted to keep the roots dark/my natural color and just have it gradually go completely light at my ends. I ended up with brassy, uneven highlights. I tried explaining that it wasn't what I asked for and the owner spent at least 15 minutes trying to convince me that I got what I wanted, then when I wasn't giving in said that I hadn't been clear with what I asked for and that I had changed my mind. She finally told me to google pictures of ombré.... She offered to have me come back and get it fixed for $80 to cover the cost of products but I will definitely be staying away. I was excited for all the good reviews but I'm not comfortable with a place that will spend more time trying to change your mind than trying to figure out what it is that you wanted in the first place. My friend did get a quick, basic trim that she was happy with. Owner was also generally kind of rude to my stylist (who was very nice and friendly) - that's just another reason for me to stay away. read more

wowwww! this place is incredible. they were able to fit me in at the last minute for a haircut & styling when a different salon cancelled on me. anita did a shampoo wash, haircut, then blow dry. she even gave me some little curls at the end. she was so nice to chat with & she really listened about what i wanted. i haven't liked my haircuts in years going to many different places, but i have settled because the coloring is good. i'm blown away by anita's work. i feel like a princess!!! highly recommend this spot. read more

I really recommend this hair salon! Good vibe and experience. Everyone is super friendly. I had my hair cut and colored by Valdi and it looks amazing. I wanted to minimize the blonde highlights in my hair and bring out my natural color as well as covering a patch of grey hair in the front. I've been a devoted client for years - the hair stylists are intuitive, courteous and make you feel at home and above all they are multi-talented with a pair of scissors, hair color and a blow dryer. I that they take their time and want to get it perfect- if they don't have enough hair style magazines they offer you the ipad to make your vision come to life. I recently called up and was quite happy the owner said to come right in (this is a rarity). I was introduced to a new stylist and all I wanted was to have my hair washed, cut, styled and blown dry. She did an Amazing job - I felt more like myself with this bold new short cut. When it was time to settle up, I was shocked to be charged $60 - I had no idea my salon was now charging Manhattan rates for a haircut! Its not like I asked for a blow out (which I didn't) or a hair treatment and I felt I got charged double for a simple cut. Its a shame - I really liked going here. I felt comfortable but if their rates shot up since the last time I've been here I'm going to have to sadly find another hair sanctuary. I feel that I should be issued at least $20 for the overcharge-$40 is fine but $60 is stretching it. read more

I needed a blowout for a photoshoot, and Anita was great! This was the fastest blowout I've ever had (I have long, thick hair), and my hair was so shiny and smooth. She even added extra waves with a curler for more movement. I had my makeup done so the shoot wasn't for a few more hours after the appointment, and it still stayed perfect. read more

Got my hair cut by Adrian today and it looks amazing! His focus and attention to detail is unparalleled. When I told him what I had in mind, he assessed my hair and was honest with me on his opinion. He ended up using a techhnique I've never seen before and my hair came out great! I have very thin hair and he was able to add volume and revive my damaged hair. Why oh why does a place has 5 stars with the experience I went through here? Long story short: I went for a simple toner, nothing crazy. I ended up with my hair going from red, to green, to orange all in the timeframe of three hours. All I wanted was to TONE DOWN my hair color which was a caramel balayage. The lady there acknowledged the situation & didn't want to charge me. I still left $20 but to this day I would like those take those $20 back. My hair is still recovering from all the damage of re-applying dyes. Safe yourself the hassle & just don't do it! read more

Never had a wax this good. I've had Brazilians other places in Manhattan, and not only is the process less painful, and the lady sweeter (Barbara, what a gem!), but the result is far superior. No in-growns, none of that crap. Also, very affordable. I got my hair cut here once, and they did a great job. They kinda make you wait, even if you have an apt. I really like this little salon near my apartment for last-minute blow-outs or up-dos. It has a clean and pleasant environment. They always give a great scalp massage and I never feel rushed, also most importantly they never burn me with the blow dryer! I can't speak to other services but I've been here about 10 times and always had a good experience. They take walk ins but if you can call even an hour in advance it helps. I'm pretty sure this is my first ever review but after going to Beauty Design on Wednesday, I was the happiest I've ever been with my hair color and I knew I had to write a review. My roommate actually found the place on Yelp. Like me, she was looking for the perfect blonde and for someone who doesn't leave your hair brassy. She loved the reviews on Anita and booked an appointment. Her hair looked so amazing that I too did my research and made an appointment with her. I called on Monday and was seen on Wednesday. Anita was completely thorough and listened to my needs and wants. Im always nervous when I get my color touched because in my experience it's either veered towards orange or the hair stylist barely made a noticeable change, and for a ton of money. I knew I would love my hair before she even rinsed it out. I got full highlights and she also put color over it (not affecting the highlights) To even out the base. We chatted the whole time and her and Elvira made me feel so comfortable. The final outcome was amazing and totally worth the price. I paid only a little bit less in astoria for half highlights and a blow out. With Anita the blow out is included. I have most definitely found my perfect blonde and perfect stylist. I came here to get my hair cut six weeks ago and had a great experience with Monika, went back over the weekend to get layers done and had a different stylist hack away at my hair without asking how short the shortest layer should be. It took her less than 10 minutes to give me the haircut and its way shorter and looks much worse. She didn't take the time to figure out my hair is thick and curly, she just started cutting.
