Ive never been to this salon but booked a curly cut with Nada on a whim. My hair is extremely dry, lacked shape, and was becoming too difficult to manage. For reference, I have 3C-4A hair depending on where you look. The salon is cute and the receptionist was super sweet -- she nailed a great first impression. Shortly after checking in, I was in Nada's chair discussing what I was going for. I showed her some photos and emphasized that I didn't want a triangle cut. For some reason, when people hear "curly cut," they immediately think of the triangle shape which looks awful on me. Nada was kind and patient, taking the time to go through all my inspo pics carefully. She's not chatty like some stylists, which was fine by me. Since my hair was in a bun and my curls were stretched, a dry cut wasn't an option. Instead, Nada washed my hair, cut it while wet, rinsed it, applied product, then diffused and did a final trim to perfect the shape I usually hate how everyone styles my hair, so I was fully prepared to go home and fix it myself--but Nada absolutely killed it. My hair looks beautiful! It feels light, bouncy, and perfectly hydrated, and my curls have never looked better. The shape is on point, and everything just falls into place effortlessly. She provided me with some strategies she uses to help with grow out and she was meticulous while cutting my hair. If youre looking for attention to detail, I would recommend Irina. Edit- I have to remove two stars. The next day, woke up to tiny pieces of hair all over my pillow, which was nothing new but the fact that I paid so much for a cut and didn't even end up getting a proper trim is pretty unacceptable. My hair is super damaged but in the past, trims have been effective enough to at least eliminate breakage for a couple of weeks. Maybe the case is that my hair was beyond repair. I would have appreciated hearing that and not being charged for a master cut if they were not able to deliver on it. Alyssa was really sweet! My hair is very difficult to work with and needs a lot of TLC. While I don't think I walked out transformed and looking photo-ready, which would have been nice for a $250 haircut, she worked with what she had and put me on the path to recovery and recommended some good products and services (namely, extensions) so 4 stars for that. I think l'd only recommend getting a cut here if your hair is in good shape to start. Definitely talented and kind, but expect no miracles (especially if you have ethnic hair). read more

3 stars because everyone was nice. I've been on the search for new salon ever since my person moved. I've read all the great reviews about this place and after mulling it over, I decided to book an appointment with Lola. Lola was so kind, however she didn't really listen to what I wanted and in return I ended up with a terrible cut. Because I was a bit unsure of what I wanted, she said she would just cut a bit and we'll go from there. BTW , she cut my hair dry. I thought we would take It slow, but she just did her own thing. I had to take off my glasses so I couldn't see. I have straight hair but if it's cut past a certain point the ends curls outwards, which I did not want and I had informed her of this. Not only did she give me layers that were short, but the layers themselves don't look great. So now the end of the layers kind of stick out. I think Lola realized I wasn't happy and said I could come back in 2 weeks. But the hair is too short for anything to be done. For me, this place was not worth it, this is unfortunately one of the worst haircuts I've received in my adult life. EDIT: I would like to add that one of the co-owners did reach out. She was kind and understanding, she did offer a complimentary cut and to give them another chance. Perhaps, when my hair grows out again, I'll be open to it. I had Ericka as my stylist and she was incredibly personable, professional and talked though exactly what she was envisioning for my hair. I booked with her again almost immediately. The salon itself was clean and tidy, but felt fun. It really gives you the sense that you are relaxing with friends fam rather than being made up at a stuffy salon. But tonight, this extremely kind and talented and thoughtful stylist went above and beyond to take care of my teenaged daughter. My daughter was unacceptably late (through no fault of her own, NYC, holiday season, weather, need I say more)? Dominque was kind enough to wait for her and give her the holiday present I'd hoped she would have. My girl came home feeling good about herself snd at her age, that's not an easy thing to say, I'm always grateful and appreciative of the staff at the Birdhouse but taking care of my kid in that way is a whole different standard of generosity and kindness. At the recommendation of a friend, I went to Bird House for the first time for a hair cut. Their booking process is very easy, with lots of different options. I'm obsessed with one of their offerings: "Emo Cut" ("This cut doesn't cost any more than a standard haircut [unless you're making a huge change, in which case, book "transformational cut"], but we want to be able to care for you during these important moments. Leave us a note when you book with whatever details you want to share.") The team bios also make it really easy to tell who specializes in what. My hair's not curly enough for a curly cut, but I booked with a curly specialist, Harley, and she was AMAZING. She has amazing loose curls herself and she was SO knowledgeable. The shape she gave my hair looks great, and she gave me lots of great tips for leveling up my daily routine (but in realistic way). I've also usually had stylists dry my hair straight after a cut, but Harley did a "curly set" and omg my curls have never looked better! (I went home and had impromptu professional headshots done to memorialize!) The salon itself is the most peaceful space with lots of space, great light, plants, spa water. Like, just a pleasure to spend time there. The cut was more than I'm used to spending, but I felt like I'd just gotten my first "grown up" hair cut - definitely felt like the quality of the whole experience justified the price. I visited The Bird House Salon for the first time today, and had my hair cut and styled by Harley. I was nervous about being a first time client, but Harley and the lovely vibe in the salon in general put me at ease. The salon is modern, clean, and bright. There is music, but not overly loud (am decibel sensitive). The staff that greeted me were exceedingly friendly and pleasant. The overall service was highly professional, and thankfully, without an iota of pretentiousness. Harley asked me what I wanted in the way of a haircut, and we discussed that and my [thinning] hair at length. She provided me with many great and specific tips for styling and maintaining my curly hair, which was really helpful given that I am totally lazy and low maintenance when it comes to style upkeep. I got bits of product recommendations in response to some of my questions about upkeep, but there was no hard sell whatsoever (true of the Salon in general)-- what was suggested was all very helpful and went far beyond the issue of product. I chose to have an appointment with Harley because her profile on the website exuded an energy and enthusiasm and friendliness that I felt would suit me-- plus she has specialization in curly hair. I went in today for a curly cut and "a lot lighter" hair coloring, and left with my hair darker than I went in... Honestly, I'm really disappointed. When I went in I mentioned how I wanted my hair to be a lot lighter and how I wanted to have a reddish tint to it, I showed some pictures, all of hair that was lighter than my own. The stylist looked the pictures over and then mentioned grey hair coverage and applying the gloss to the greys and I said I don't really mind but I guess whatever makes it easy to maintain. Maybe this was where things went wrong? (I don't really care about my grey hair, it's the least of my worries) does that mean "I'm going to darken your hair instead of lightening it"? Maybe it does and I just didn't know. We also talked a bit about length and I mentioned wanting the back much shorter and we talked about the length in front being between my shoulder and chin. Anyhow, after the foil things and washing and doing the gloss we went back to a chair with the mirror and she did a quick trim, I wasn't sure if it was the final trim or she was just tidying things up (I paid for the $140 curly cut so I assumed some of the cutting would be done dry) She dried it and applied some products to it and asked what I thought. I hesitated and it took me a lot to say it, but I said that I expected it to be lighter since that was the main thing I wanted (and my hair was clearly darker than when I came in). She explained that I have a problem area on the back of my head so she had to make it darker, and than it was in order to cover my grey hair. Now, I don't really have much grey hair on the back of my head, but my hair is thin there, so maybe that's what she was talking about. Anyway, she then said that over time the parts that were light before will fade a bit... I don't know if she was just covering for it not coming out the way she expected or if she really was aiming for this color, but I was just upset that she had not mentioned anything about this prior to starting. I wanted lighter hair and if I knew it was going to be darker afterwards I would not have had the service done... I also want to point out that I was not going for blond or anything extreme, just a lighter reddish brown, and my starting point was a natural medium/dark brown with some of it already lightened quite a bit. Afterwards, she seemed maybe frustrated, maybe not, maybe embarrassed --I don't know-- and asked how the haircut was. I was a little taken aback because I honestly didn't know she was done. My hair was mostly dry and it's tough to tell how long it will be since it's curly but at that point it was still past my shoulders on the back and sides. I mentioned how I was hoping it would be shorter in the back since that was the other main request I had, she quickly cut a straight line along the back and asked about the front, I apologized and mentioned hoping it would be a bit shorter too, and again, a quick snip snip. I apologized again and then she started shaping the sides a bit, and it did look much better. I'm still not sure if this was something she was planning on doing or if she was really already done before all of this, I have no idea if I crossed a line but at this point I was really just trying to not cry (which, I know is an overreaction, but I'm extremely insecure about my hair and was not sure what was going on or if I had done something wrong or what). She talked about products and seemed genuine and recommended something and then that was it, she kind of just left. I paid, $485 + tip When I got home, my girlfriend's first response was "what? I thought you said you were going to get it lighter, not darker!?"" Overall, I am happy with the cut, and am very unhappy with the dye. I'm still not sure if she had already finished the cut before asking me about it (and at that point, I would not have been happy about it). There was a lack of communication all the way through that really left me unsure of what was going on, and what decisions had been made. I would have been happy to not have my hair dyed at all and just have gotten the cut if I knew in advance my only option was to go darker... read more

These stars are for customer service! I'll continue to update about my bangs as they grow out but Nicole, the owner, called me today to hear me out. I thought she was really nice. The owner calling me herself instead of a manager made me feel heard. Her sympathy and the fact that she insisted she was going to train the hairstylist again was really refreshing. She also refunded me and generously offered to have her head hair stylist help me re-shape them as they grow out. I really appreciated that she didn't just apologize but proactively is helping make it better as well. Obviously my bangs are still pretty tragic but I already have an appointment booked for restyling in 3 weeks. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Based on customer service alone I'll give The Birdhouse another shot. Next time I'll just book with a more experienced stylist. I was honestly afraid that I was going to be turned away because of the extensive damage that my hair had taken after a badly done bleach job from another salon. I came after to The Bird House after reading all of the reviews. I was in desperate need of advice and treatment as my hair was very brittle. I got the Olaplex treatment and a blow out. I was pleasantly surprised by how much softer my hair came out. I wanted to cry from pure joy because I was honestly afraid I would have had to cut off all of my hair. Nada was my stylist and she listened to my sob story of a bad bleach job. She even gave me advice on how to continue at home treatment without giving that up-sale pressure most people do when they're trying to get you to buy more things. I've been seeing Gillian for years at this point and I recommend them SO HIGHLY. From maintenance cuts to big changes, they always deliver. I come to the salon with a general idea or vibe for my hair, but I always ask Gill for their advice. They're great at listening to / understanding what I'm going for--while providing expertise to make it that much better. When I started wanted to do a really short haircut, Gill was all on board but didn't push me to actually go for it until I was finally ready (and of course the cut is major and I love it so much). When I wanted to color my (very dark) hair for the first time, they suggested a color & service that would be the least damaging. They also clearly set expectations for what the process & maintenance would be, which was super helpful to know upfront before taking the plunge! All in all, can't say enough good things about Gill. Especially if you have curly hair, book with them if you're looking for a stylist you can stick with! Plus, I am a big fan of Bird House in general.
