So I've been coming here for yearrrrs. It was the first salon I went to in Brooklyn where I actually left happy with my hair. I tend to be pretty picky but the bigger issue is that I'm a redhead and apparently getting the right shade of red for a lot of stylists is challenging. Well, not here. I'm schooled in color theory so I was able to explain the exact shade of red I wanted and Justin delivered. Besides being a sweetheart, we immediately connected. He's a total smart ass and I loved that!! So if you lack personality or sense of humor, this may not be the stylist for you. He's creative, experienced and gives great recommendations, especially when I want something done to my hair that I really shouldn't be doing. I have also gone to Rebecca, the salon owner, in Justin's absence, and she's a badass as well. I have gotten microblading done with Kristina when she had only done like 10 people and she did a great job! Being a professional make-up artist and helping many people who don't know how to articulate what they want, it can be challenging to please the customer. If you don't really know what you want or how to articulate it, find pictures to show. Be realistic though. If you don't look anything like Beyonce or whatever flavor she's wearing for the week, that may not be the best screenshot to show. Look at face shapes, skin tone, hair texture, etc. and accept wether or not you have the kind of hair and face that you can really do ANYTHING with. I went to Hello Beautiful to have my roots dyed and toned from my black natural color to match the champagne gold blonde that I have on the rest of my waist-length hair. After almost five hours I walked out with terribly over-processed white roots that made my champagne gold blonde hair look yellow in comparison. It was hard to tell in the very dark salon (perhaps the fact that there is so little light in a color salon is part of the problem). When I called to complain the owner (Rebecca) said that I must have done something to it myself after I left because she and four other people working there all agree that it was all one color. This despite the fact that the picture I sent to her phone was time-stamped from 45 minutes after I left the salon. She agreed to correct it for me, but her correction involved adding three rounds of golden toners to my hair that she applied in such a sloppy way that it turned a lot of the hair right next to the bleached roots to more yellow which looks terrible with my skin tone. During the process she also dug her nails into my bleached scalp, ripped out a lot of my hair with violent brushing, splashed dye and water all over me and somehow managed to drip a bright coral Manic Panic into my hair leaving me with some new pink spots, which when I pointed out she said "Do you want me to put a little bleach on it?!" and "It's semi-permanent so it'll come off eventually". All this while bragging about how she has learned to be super fast while working with celebrities. As a result of my $200 (including tips) excursion to Hello Beautiful I now have badly damaged hair that though is now a little more evened out than the white roots they originally gave me, it is not at all the color that I asked for and walked in with. read more

This place is a joke! from the cuts to the stylists. I got my hair cut from Justin, during my cut he told me that hair styling come to him naturally. The entire cut took about 10 minutes, he missed about a quarter of my bangs and the rest basically he took the length off no layers or any style. There was about a two inch square of hair on the floor I'm certain he missed half my hair as well. When I got home I thought that I could always go back and get them to redo it, but I will never step foot into this place. Keep in mind for Justin hair cutting comes naturally and he also told me that he hates people. I ended up cutting my hair myself and it is easily 100 times better than what Justin did. I've been going to Hello Beautiful since their sister spot on Havemeyer, Glamour Garage, closed, mostly to see Justin who has been doing my hair since 2010. Most recently I went to get my hair dyed blonde from dark brown again, 2 days before my brother's wedding. I bleached my hair for years with Justin with no issues and Rebecca, the owner took it back to my natural brunette earlier this year, so despite their excellent care my hair is pretty fried. Toshi was realistic and knowledgeable about how far we could take my hair back to platinum without melting my hair completely off. We bleached and toned and honestly, it was darker and more orange than I anticipated, due to my hair's condition, no reflection on Toshi's excellent expertise. I gave it a day, but really didn't want to have orange hair in my brother's wedding photos and called Toshi back the next day. Immediately she offered to do the ENTIRE hours long process over again that afternoon. Now it's lightened back up even more and the photos came out great. Hello Beautiful staff are incredible, talented and stand-up professionals, committed to their customer expectations while not damaging your hair. I love every visit there. Thank you guys! read more

I had my hair cut by Rebecca this weekend - she is very talented but in my opinion also quite rude. She left me waiting for 45 minutes (even though I had an appointment) and did not even apologize or offer a discount. I know that salons can be busy and appointments can run over, but she acted like she had done nothing wrong, as if I had showed up 45 minutes early for the appointment. Not to mention the level of conversation among the stylists was way too personal, so don't go here if that would make you uncomfortable. The 15 minutes Rebecca spent on my hair, she was nice enough and cut my hair just how I wanted her to - I have curly hair and like a lot of layers. If I hadn't been so desperate for a haircut I would have absolutely walked out. read more

WORST SALON EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. Truly. I rarely give reviews like this, and never for people that I think are okay. I've been getting extensions for over ten years, and NEVER have I been so LIVID and disappointed with the service. Heres the deal, I came into the salon for extensions with Rebecca. She gave me the fusion ones, the ones that use keratin glue to bond to your own natural hair. I left the first time with some kind of terrible mullet. She was too lazy to add enough hair to the top so it wouldnt belend, and gave me a terriblem half ass haircut that she didnt even razor cut. It just looked horribel. I wanted to take them out then and there. So I come in for another appointment telling her that I'm either taking them out now, or she needs to cut it better and add more hair, which she did. It looked better but stil needed a lot of blending. My hair is very fine. As the "professional" she should have been more honest with me, telling me that I should either not get these extensions at all, or that they were possibly the wrong kind to use for me. I decided to make another appointment for removal: this is the two week point, mind you, and my extension hair is completely gross and damaged. The "remi" hair that she gave me had gome completely to shit. Good hair doesn't do that, and I basically had a nasty tangled mess on my head. I walk into the salon after having made the appointment that morning, and she doesnt have the removal solution in the salon. She said nobody told her about the appointment. I proceed to buy it myself because I hate my hair so much. WORST PART IS THIS: the removal solution was not working well to remove the product, so she was essentially pulling and combing it out at the ROOT! I have bald spots all over my scalp now. As I was sitting there for hours in PAIN, she tells me that I'm not losing any hair. STRAIGHT LIES!!!!! It felt like I was getting a brazilian wax. She actually said "You should never have babies. You can't take pain." When I got home and looked at my scalp, there are many large bald patches all over it. TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE experience. And and I'm like $700 poorer. read more

Note to the owner: just because you say you don't mean to be rude, while you're being rude - doesn't make you any less rude. There are nicer ways to phrase things. And when you're blowing out someone's hair and make it look like shit and ask them if they want to change it and they say no - it's not cause they're happy with the job you did, it's cause they don't want to be berated about the quality of their hair in front of 5 other people. I had a weird experience when I got my hair cut recently. The stylist I saw didn't seem AT ALL interested in my cut/styling. Or with talking to me. Everything I said was required to be an extra sarcastic remark -- including my request to have the back of my hair cut a bit shorter so the cut would last longer? At the end of my cut (which was shorter than I asked, with bangs WAY more blunt than I requested), he asked if I wanted it shampooed. I assumed I didn't properly book my cut and said not to worry about washing it. However, when a friend went to the salon yesterday (she was desperate), she told me we paid the same amount -- I got a dry cut, no offer for styling, and an unpleasant, annoyed demeanor for the same price as her pleasant stylist, shampoo, and style. Also, I think it should be noted that the Yelp check-in promo isn't exactly a promotional (either that, or I am just completely confused about pricing there). You check in on Yelp, and your haircut will cost $50. It is not a $50 coupon towards a haircut. My haircut WITHOUT shampoo or styling was $50 + tax; my friend with the shampoo and styling used the Yelp promo and paid $50 + tax. read more

Naomi Yasuda is a high end nail tech but as it is she's booked up for like months in advance because she's done work for celebs etc. Now I had went in expecting to get her - wrong! It's Naomi and a second girl - Chi Now I love Chi's personality I really do but my nails came out to 75$ AFTER "taxes" and it was so NOT worth it. They fell off in less than three weeks and they looked dull after a week!!!!!!! The only way I would ever go back is for Naomi but it just sucks that I paid all of that money for no reason :( read more

Let me start off my saying that finding a great hair stylist is like finding a great boyfriend or girlfriend. You need trust, communication, and a little adventure. I have just had my 4th visit at Hello Beautful (with Rebecca doing my hair) and she is my new lover FOR SURE. I came in one day just to get a haircut, and after having extensions in years before, I truly missed them. Good hair extensions in NYC can run you about $1500. I got the deal of a lifetime when Rebecca offered to put in the same natural hair, and even more of it, for the AMAZING price of $700. This is not a friend/family discount, this was on my first visit. Angela was the one to do my extensions, while Rebecca was coloring my friends hair. I walked out of the salon feeling amazing, so excited to have this confidence boost for such an amazing price. As the week went on, I noticed a few things about the extensions that made me a little hesitant. A few were loose, and the cut was less than so so. I called right away and asked to speak with Rebecca. She was BEYOND sweet and told me to get over there as soon as I could. I went over later that day and spent the next two hours talking with Rebecca, and having her COMPLETELY REDO the extensions, assuring me she only wants me to be happy with my hair. She didn't charge me anything for the new (fantastic) job she did on my hair, and I assured her I would be back soon. Two weeks later, (now my 3rd visit) I booked with Rebecca for a color job. I am pretty adventurous with my hair, and already felt amazing energy and trust, so I told her I wanted to go RED. Like, Rihanna, and Ariel the little mermaid....RED RED RED. Not only did she completely nail the look I was going for, but she moved up the extensions (a typically costly service) JUST CAUSE SHE WANTED TO. The vibe in the salon is amazing, Rebecca is beyond talented, the receptionist is a doll, and the manicure are incredible. Anyone who feels otherwise must be more conservative and not looking for a laid back rock n roll vibe that Hello Beautiful presents to a T. I love the Salon and I certainly LOVE Rebecca. I just recently moved to the New York area. Maintaining a cut and color has been very important to be since I was very young, so one of my first priorities when moving here was to find a salon. I came across Hello Beautiful, and saw how hip and funky it was and made an appointment almost immediately. When I got to the salon, I was pleasantly greeted with a smile and waited, very comfortably, for Rebecca, who I was very lucky to have an appointment with. She was very talkative and made me very comfortable. I was able to communicate the cut I wanted, and she did it exactly how I envisioned. The finished product was great, both cut and color. I've been going to Rebecca for a while and I think she is a very talented hair stylist - she does a great job with my cuts, color, and blowdrys every time I've come to the salon. Once in a while she gives me a piece of cake and she always gives me a hug. So, I kind of feel loved and I like coming here. I also dig the funky Betsy Johnson/Patricia Field-ish decor and the cool urban street style of the other stylists. I have a few complaints. One is that they don't sell too much product here - I know some people hate having product pushed on them, but I like the convenience of picking up products when I'm at the salon. I also like buying a product that's been used on my hair that I like. The second is that I think this salon has a lot of potential to be truly great, but they probably need to survey their customers to get an idea of how to make the salon better. I've had other friends complain at the lack of attention they get and inconsistent haircuts, etc. Also, I referred one of my good friends here and someone completely screwed up her hair color. I was so embarrassed! I will still continue to go here because I've had a great experience - the two stylists I recommend are Rebecca (the owner) and there is a guy here with tattoos and a mohawk that is also excellent. My favorite stylist left Medusa Salon in Park Slope and recommended another person at the salon to do my hair. Unfortunately, this person gave me one of the worst haircuts I've had in a while. I thought it was maybe just me, that I wasn't blowing it out right or had winter hat-hair, but after a week it still didn't look good even when I took the time to blow it out. I let this haircut grow out for about a month, wore my hair in a ponytail, and then decided I needed to to get it fixed pronto. I went back to Hello Beautiful, remembering that although the service wasn't always perfect, the haircuts were very good. I'm so glad I went back and I'll be dedicated to them from now on! Faith spent an hour painstakingly fixing my bad cut, leaving me as much length as she could. She pointed out that my layers were different lengths on either side of my head and that they weren't blended correctly. After the cut, Faith blow dried my hair exactly how I like it - no crazy barrel curls from a big round brush that I can never duplicate at home; just nice, sleek hair with the ends ironed straight. I have been getting my hair done at Hello Beautiful for 3 years now and I have never had happier hair. I started going to Kanako and formed such a great relationship with her, that I invited her to my engagement party and to do my hair at my wedding. Needless to say, that asshole is out of my life now, but Kanako is still there! :) I never have a problem getting an appointment, especially on the weekends, I have brought countless friends and family to HB to get them hooked as well. My own 50something mother goes to this wild little salon! I recently cut 9 inches of my hair off and I have never been happier. Rebecca the owner is amazing (Kanako was on vaca) with her attention to detail and speedy precision. Everyone there is sweet and very social and it wont cost you a days pay to get a great haircut.... I went into Hello Beautiful Salon to venture to the blonde side. My natural hair color is a very dark brown. I scheduled and appointment with Kristina. I didn't exactly have a color in mind, just blonde. She was incredibly understanding and knowledgeable about her craft. And I'm more than happy to say I have gorgeous golden locks now, that are still silky soft. On top of that, the price was incredible. Normally changing that man shades would cost me $200. Here you'll get the tastiest gossip along with the hippest of hip do's. The hot pink walls and leopard print couch have always turned me off, but the ladies seem to just love the uber-girliness of the place. Located inside the Williamsburg Mini Mall, Hello Beautiful takes walk-ins and those who want a wild do. Cuts are reasonably priced (even by my cheap-o) standards. The guys cuts are even cheaper. Kanako. Kanako.Kanako. She is the best best best. I carry around her business card just because I get asked about once a week who cuts my hair. She is amazing and fun to talk to. Once I went to another stylist there and my cut was uneven on the sides and much shorter than what I asked for. I spoke to Rebecca and she fixed it for free and gave me a complimentary cut the next time I came in. Very good service. Plus! They have a very cute dog and cat hanging out there! Only downside: they don't seem to use any high end products, but it doesn't really matter because that also means that they're not pushing you to buy them. Sweet. read more

If you've got an undisciplined dog living in your shop and running loose, and it bites a customer and draws blood, "He's just playing" is NOT the appropriate response. I've got welts and scratches on my arms from spending thirty seconds in that store. They're lucky I didn't call the cops. After comparing notes with a friend, I learned that the same dog went through her bag and destroyed a bunch of expensive makeup she'd just bought. The staff treated it like a joke. That dog should not be in a place of business, and the fact that it's misbehaved is clearly the owners' fault, not the dog's. Nobody should spend a dime here! read more

Leaving Atlanta and my nail stylist left me feeling sad and lost. Who was going to take care of my glamorous tips in NYC? Finding a nail artist who can keep up with my slightly outlandish style is a challenge in any city, but Hello Beautiful has definitely filled the void. I heard of the salon while browsing blogs, so I decided to give them a try after only 3 days as a New Yorker. What a pleasant surprise! Although the salon was tucked away in a space not visible from Bedford, the decor was as off-the-wall as I wanted my nails to be. The old Hollywood style vanity and leopard print walls reassured me I was in the right place. My nail stylist took great care of me working with precision for the entire 2.5 hour session. I didn't have a design in mind, so I let her do her thing. She still asked for my approval before she began to work on my nails. The end result was of high quality and the price reflected the work. You get what you pay for, so I have no problem paying the price for the services rendered. I will be back! Everyone there is so chill, fashionable, and friendly. You can tell the ladies in this salon are serious about their work, and they are all great at what they do. If you're looking for plain Jane single color nails don't come here. This place is pretty good-- I'm not one to get my hair cut much, I went here to get it trimmed and get a different look going. My hair-cutter was nice, was a bit cautious in cutting off too much at once [i had to ask for more cut off]-- so it wasn't scarry. I did walk out with a "hipper" hairstyle than I walked in with. For a girl's cut, style, and blow dry, it was $52 + tip. The whole process took about an hour, from start to finish. I will say they have a WIDE range of hair colors, I was looking into purple, they've got about 12 shades of just purple! Now if I can just find the goo to do it myself instead of pay $80 for a streak..... I recommend it-- for the area, if you want to step up from the unisex joints-- this is probably one of the cheaper in the Bedford area. read more

I honestly can't believe this place is still in business. I came here for hair color... I asked the colorist for a "sable Brown" and they turned my hair ORANGE. I was under the dryer when I heard her say "oh shit!". My hair was burnt to a crisp and a hue of orange I can only describe as "burnt sienna". But that's not even the worst of this experience.. The owner, who was pregnant at the time, watched the whole event transpire, and did NOTHING. Yes, she was busy with her own client and looked very concerned, but she offered nothing. In retrospect, I was so upset and just wanted to run out of there, that I didn't even speak up. And here's the real kicker... I ran into the stylist a few days later at the coffee shop. She was with a friend, and when I approached her about the hair, she and her friend LAUGHED and she said, "Oops!". This place does not deserve your money.
