I cannot tell you how incredible my experience with Dren was - literally I found my new, long-term stylist and I am SO excited. Not only is she an amazing human, she's an unbelievable expert who takes the time and care to ask the right questions and explain what the plan is before she begins. I booked partial highlights and a haircut with a very specific intent: begin a transition process to eventually live in my natural greys as well as receive a haircut that is tailored to my 2A hair type (thin and wavy with a tendency to frizz), so I wanted to meet and have time to talk this all out with a master stylist. Not only did Dren walk me through what she would do during our first session but how it would translate into future sessions and a cadence of visits and how often I should come back to keep up with the whole plan. I've been coming to the Birdhouse salon for a few years now, first started at the Gowanus location and always had such a pleasant experience. I recently started coming to the Bushwick location to get color with Ona. I'm always in love with her work. I'm a naturally dark brunette, and she takes the time to chat with me about what I want and bring my vision to life with dimension. I always feel welcome and well cared for here. I am writing to give LIAM a tremendous review. He spent 4.5 hours with me and transformed my brassy, orangy blonde locks into a beautiful and nuanced ashy blonde with tremendous layers of color, from a darker blonde/light brown, closer to my natural color, to platinum. He was kind and patient through and spent so much time applying my highlights I couldn't believe it. Everyone has been raving about my color since. This was my best experience at a hair salon since I've lived in NY! The whole process was amazing, from Reception to the actual Stylists. I booked my appointment with Quintana after reading reviews that she does natural highlights very well, and she killed it. First of all, they give you wine which is always a nice treat. Secondly, Quin took the time to really listen to what I wanted, what I like and don't like, and what I considered my problems with my hair color were. She then spent hours meticulously working through to give me the most perfect sun-kissed, lived in highlights of my dreams. It is rare for me to walk out of a salon with highlights that don't feel too warm or brassy to me, but she nailed it. She also gave me a beautiful long-layered cut, which is exactly what I wanted. On top of all of that, she is an absolute joy to be around. I had such a fun day in the salon with her! I highly recommend booking services with her, and will definitely be returning. The ONLY negatives: 1. parking is tough, which they tell you in advance! Give yourself enough time to find parking if you're driving. 2. I wish I had found Quin sooner! read more

Ash has been doing my hair for 4 years now at the Bird House in Gowanus and I'm so excited for her to be managing her own space at the Bird House - Bushwick!! She is such a star. When we first met my hair had tons of bleach damage and discoloration - and its the healthiest its ever been! I get compliments constantly on my balayage and it lasts for months. I went to the Bushwick location to see Ona just before flying back to England - that night! I had been over-highlighted and needed the regrowth stripe down the middle of my head, sorting out pronto. It's so hard to find someone who not only understands what you're asking for (even when a little unclear yourself, lol), but actually executes it, too! Ona really did go above and beyond and absolutely knocked it out of the park. 6 weeks later I don't have any evidence of regrowth, (despite being a brunette with blonde highlights). I have natural highlights - the grey kind- and I wanted to lean into these so that I don't need to be back at the salon every 8 weeks. Horrible service! Do not book with Ash! I booked with the owner directly and she burned my scalp and left me in severe pain! She did not offer to fix it or compensate me either! I had to go to a doctor for my scalp and then to a second hair salon to get my hair fixed! I had to pay more money then what I was going to initially pay! I found the Birdhouse because I was looking for Jocelyn Wood, who'd cut my hair at another salon. Had a bunch of unhappy haircuts from other places so hunted her back down to this location. First off, the salon is very nice, friendly. But ultimately I really only care about whether I'm happy about my cut. If it's between going to a posh, good-smelling salon with a meh cut or having to sit on a discarded broken toilet in a back alley but a great cut, I'd choose the latter. Fortunately here I get the nice environment AND a great cut. I bring her photos and she just gets what I'm going for and I've asked for some drastic (for me) changes . Like I recently did an undercut and asymmetrical baby bangs. And it's exactly what I wanted! She's that magical combo of skilled, confident, adventurous, and honest. And funny and nice also. She's the only person I've gone to in recent years where I haven't come home, whipped out the scissors, and made adjustments to the Not-Quite-Right or Very Wrong. Highly recommend. read more
