I am confused. I use to be a client of Maria's and even use to tip her double the amount because she was inexpensive and I like to see myself as being generous and I like supporting small business but during my last two visits she raised the price to double what I use to pay her. No explanation and no notice. I guess she can charge her clients whatever she wants and that is fine with me but a friend of mine also goes to her once in a while and she says she charges her the lessor amount. I also texted her several times the last month but she doesn't respond back. Before you come here, make sure to bring cash! This review is also a little overdue, as I had gotten a haircut back in March. But Maria did an amazing job with my hair. I have what is considered as thick, coarse hair that is a little wavy (Asian hair). THE SALON: It's easy to miss, but it wasn't such a big issue for me. There was plenty of parking as well. The salon itself is a little more on the small side, but it was clean and it smelled nice. THE APPOINTMENT: During the appointment, she made sure to wash my hair, which was one of the most relaxing services I had ever received. If you're a little short like me though, you might strain your neck from leaning your head back into the sink (but at least my hair smelled super nice!). Right after she led me to the chair, she made sure to ask if I was comfortable with the length of hair she wanted to cut. She took her time with my hair and made sure to not use thinning scissors on me (yay!). When she was finally done, Maria straightened my hair to make sure I had volume. The end result was hair with volume that didn't look weighed down and moved easily. She was able to tame my hair and managed to make it look polished. I showed her the exact picture I had shown the previous hairstylist (different hair salon) an she actually did what I ask. She is amazing!! Environment: Quaint. Clean. Awkwardly quiet, she clearly feels more comfortable speaking spanish. While there, Maria's power breaker went off twice; she had a fan and blow dryer running. Hair experience: I have thick hair with subtle waves. Upon entering, Maria didnt even look at my hair, which i made sure to leave natural so she could see how it falls; she went straight to washing. I showed her a few pictures and she got to cutting. When it came to texturizing my hair she brought out the dreaded thining shears... makes your hair look frizzy when growing out. I made a face... she was like, "oh, you want me to use these ones instead", as if i was suppose to know the difference. Both awere similar in design. She continued. When it came to my "blow out" it was even clearer that Maria could't handle my hair; she ended up whipping out the flat iron. I saw Maria back in January. My hair hasnt grown as it typically would with a good hair cut. As suspected... frizz. And even clearer, uneven hair cut. Maria nice, welcoming and cheap; hair cut-meh. I had my previous hair dresser for over 10 years. I was scared of trying someone new. I'm so releived. Maria did a great job with my new purple hair =) I didn't think it was going to take 8 hrs but it was worth it. Maria really cares about not damaging hair. I much rather take 8 hrs at the salon and leave with healthy hair than 4 hrs and leave with damaged hair. I loved the fact that when I was there, she was only focused on me. By appointment only. She took her time and was very meticulous in keeping my long layers just as I asked. Hair cut was not that great but it wasn't bad neither... the only thing i didn't like about it is that she started to blow dry my hair when I told her not to (my hair gets really puffy when is blow dry and I was going to go wash it and put some new treatment I had just bought at home) anyways, she insisted to... I don't even know why we wanted to, she just started blow drying with out using a comb. and she left my hair all puffy just like I didn't want to. I walked into the most gorgeous salon and the service was the best I've ever received! Maria was excellent! She spent so much time and gave my two sons the best hair cut they have ever had! Then she told me how to help me with hair issues that I've been having and I LOVE my new haircut! I can't say just how talented Maria is and how you can tell that she truly loves what she is doing! Had the worst experience at this place. My regular salon is not open on Sundays so I went to this place. I was just going in for a blow dry and to have my hair styled (curled). I didn't get the ladies name but I'm assuming she's the owner because she came in just for me when I called the phone number listed. I told her what I needed. My hair was already washed and dry when I came in so she didn't even have to do that. Now on to the part that blew my mind. She parts my hair and grabs a strand. She put hairspray on that strand then starts to roll it up on the curling iron!!! I could hear my hair sizzling from the hairspray and heat of the curling iron! Are you kidding me?!?!? Are you trying to burn my hair!? She did that to about three strands, until I finally asked her to stop. She showed me what she had done and all I had was these stiff ugly curls! I was so upset but I didn't want to be rude so I asked her to just straighten my hair with the blow dryer. I showed her a picture of what I wanted which is SOFT big curls (which my stylist does perfectly in about half an hour). She looked lost and confused and couldn't figure out how my stylist did that with just a blow dryer and flat iron. Needless to say, all this lady did was leave my hair straight but frizzy. No curls. And she still charged me $25!!! I don't mind paying to have my hair done but when you can't do what I ask and you just dry my hair (which like I mentioned was already washed and dry) and you waste an hour of my time, I have a problem with that. I will NEVER go this place and I don't recommend it for your hair needs. This place needs to send their stylist to beauty school and freshen up on the latest hair trends and styling techniques. Got my hair cut with Maria on Saturday and loved it!! I was a little skeptical at first because the salon was hidden behind a shopping center and it was my first appointment. But Maria was very sweet and welcoming. She asked me what I wanted and made sure to tell me that she would not cut more than I asked. Although there were other salons that caught my eye (and had good ratings) I decided to give this place a call. Maria was able to fit me in the same day. I was always iffy on getting facials because I had always heard horror stories. Now that I know who to go to (Lisa at Beauty Studio). DO NOT JUDGE A BOOK BY IT COVER! This is a small salon in Sylmar that sits behind a main building off of Foothill Blvd., but the inside has a modern look and is super clean. Lisa really knows what she's doing. I've done the mini facials as well as a full facial, they last between 30 minutes to an hour. But be warned... if you do the mini facial, you'll be left with wanting more! Maria explained to me about her process to the perfect haircut : cut, style, and check. First she washes your hair with amazing products then sits you down, does her 3 step process, has you stand to make sure its perfect at all angles, and blow drys the hair for a final touch. All the products lisa uses are high end-- no typical corner beauty salon gunk! She goes above and beyond to satisfy you. I have serious and I mean serious hair loss she gave me great advice. By the bulk I could see that my hair was falling out when she was brushing (a preexsisting condition I noticed before). She advised I don't use conditioner and told me the main reasons for hair loss. After leaving the salon my hair has volume, is supple, and most importantly no more hair loss! If you want quality service by a caring and good listening person for an affordable price please book an appointment with her! I usually get my hair cut 30 minutes away from where I live but a couple weeks ago I had an urgent occasion to attend to that required a hair cut. Soon enough I found this place through yelp and trusted the reviews posted for this salon, and I can say I am truly satisfied with the end result. My hair was washed, cut, and styled for a good price and I will continue to come back here.
