After reading the reviews, I'm noticing a pattern. So don't let the Black and Brown faces behind the register fool you. If as a Black person you would like to spend your money to be treated like trash, this is the place for you! Today, October 24th, I called to inquire if the store had a specific product in stock. The young lady on the phone was polite. I spelled the product name and she read it back to me and stated that she was going to check. She came back to phone after a few minutes and confirmed that it was in stock. I asked for the price and she stated that they are not allowed to give out prices over the phone but that I would find the item on aisle 25. When I arrived, I couldn't locate the product on aisle 25 but I checked the aisles on each side, 24 and 26, just to be certain that I had not overlooked it. After being unable to locate the product, I went to the checkout counter to request assistance. A young lady at the checkout counter stated that someone would meet me on aisle 25 to assist me and she called someone on a walkie talkie. The young lady who met me was unable to speak English. I spoke with her in Spanish and she simply said if we have it, it would be here. However, she never moved from the spot she was standing in to check. During this time a man showed up, although she hadn't called anyone and I explained the him what I was looking for, and that I had called to confirm it was in stock. He proceeded to walk up and down the aisle, waving his hands and yelling rudely, "if you don't see it then it's not here." I told him that I had requested assistance because perhaps I had overlooked the item or perhaps it was in their stock overflow because the cashier confirmed that they carried it prior to my coming in. He then told me to leave him alone because he was busy. He left and no one in the store would give me his name or position. Nor would they provide me with the name and contact information of a manager. They simply stated that the manager would be back in 30 minutes or that the "big boss" was out today. I informed them that I would wait. Additionally, the young lady that I originally spoke with on the phone confirmed that she never checked for the product herself and that it was this gentleman who confirmed it was in stock. While waiting, the individual who yelled at me came to the counter and I requested his name. He told me his name is Chris. When I requested his last name, he refused and stated that he was the only Chris there. He started to walk off and I proceeded to take his picture. He became irate, told me not to take his picture, and instructed store security to call the police. He did not realize that a female police officer had been in the store shopping during this incident. He asked her to arrest to me and she informed him that taking his picture is not against the law and there was nothing that he nor she could do. Needless to say, I will never shop here again. Beauty World will not get another dime of my money after they refuse to let in customers after 7:50, when their actual closing time is 8 pm. We got there at 7:53 and only needed one item. I have purchased wigs and hair products from this location in Durham, NC for many years. Although the customer service or lack there of has NEVER been the best, today was my last hooray at Beauty World. I purchased a wig on yesterday. Got it home and it was the WORST quality wig I have ever bought! The shorter dark hairs of the wig literally stick out when the wig is installed. The unit clearly was the lemon of the run. Brand: Bobby Boss #bewareladies PSA: The pricing all over the store has increased drastically...pay attention if your continue to shop there. I know that due to the pandemic the store does not accept returns of wigs, but I had to take it back given the poor quality and the price. The manager not only refused to take it back, but insulted me by asking me to try the wig on so "he could see what it looked like on my head"...(not sure when he became a beautician), offered to "write on my receipt that the next time I could get a BIG percentage off my next purchase"...(what happens if I lose the receipt?) and kept insisting that "although he believed me...he could not take the wig back because all the other ladies would be bringing their wigs back". I could not believe it! Being the professional that I am I didn't respond as my alter ego told me too. Instead I kindly let him know that based on his attitude and response it was obvious to me that maintaining me as a customer was not a priority to him. Store policy or not, as the owner he could make any decisions he deemed appropriate. Given the fact that I was a long time customer (and he knew that and me) I would never just bring something back for the heck of it...there had to be an issue. As a result, this would truly be my last visit to his store. I will take a loss...no issues. My point in posting is we have to learn to spend our well earned dollars where they are appreciated. I only spend my dollars where I'm appreciated. 99% of the store is hair care products or enhancements for minorities and it's owned by a minority yet and still you feel unwanted and they act as if they could still be open without the frequent business of the minority groups they cater to. They are honestly a decent place but went in and no customer service really. bought a burts bees hand cream that I loved. Once I got home and put it on it spread like petroleum and smelled like play-doh and was also brown. I thought it was expired so I didn't use it. Then went to Walmart and found out it was not expired but a fake. As i kept comparing the two packages i saw the ingredients and all were bold which they never were. HOLY HAIR PRODUCTS! Oh my gah! Coming from a smaller town in GA this is literally the largest beauty supply store I have ever been in. Like ever. Id if I'm jaded or what not but this place is massive. Bigger than a grocery store. They... have... EVERYTHING. I.... mean.... EVERYTHING! I was so mad I didn't have more time to browse, like an hour or 2 lol because it's like the mecca of all things beauty related, for everyone, professionals included. For young and old, men and women. all ethnicities, because .......they have EVERYTHING. I even saw a formal dress, jewelry and shoes. There are also hair vitamins, bath products and home fragrances. They are so clean and organized as well which is a major plus in a store of this size so you won't get overwhelmed. Poor customer service. Online and on their doors it notes that they are open. I go up to the store and the doors are open, and begin to shop. After 10 minutes one of the workers begin to yell at me stating that the store doesn't open until 10am. Although I understand that because of COVID19 there have been many changes; however, as a business things should be put in place to inform their customers of those changes. I haven't visited North Carolina in seven years. When I booked my trip I had Beauty World on my itinerary. I have always enjoyed shopping for wigs here. What a big disappointment this experience was. The fist thing I noticed was how the store was rearranged. The wig section is pretty much self serve. I guess due to Covid trying on wigs is not possible. There are anti theft sensors on everything making it impossible to even open the wig packaging to see the actual color and feel the texture of the hair. You can't really rely on the displays because the hair has been on display for so long the texture changes due to being handled. So I bought one anyway. What a waste of money. The wig is supposed to be human hair. This hair is so hard and sheds a lot. Well, it's a lesson learned. It won't happen again. I'll just wear this wig when it's raining and I have errands to run. I'm so disappointed. Beauty World used to be the highlight of my visit to North Carolina. SMH. I'll have to find another beauty supply. Any suggestions my fellow Yelpers? read more

I purchased 10 bottles of Clairol color. The next day at the shop I opened a bottle , and oh my gosh , it smelled like fish. All 10 bottles smelled like fish. I know chemicals do have an unpleasant odor, but never fishy. I would never buy anything from them other than Thermal Irons. read more

This place is the mecca of beauty supply stores. I think it used to be an old grocery store or something. This place is enormous. They have everything from wigs, extensions, BUNDLES, salon equipment and supplies, clippers and other barber supplies, clothes, jewelry, skin care, etc... I'm handicap and it's difficult for me to walk. I went there to purchase a wig. They have a policy where you have to go to the front of the store and pay for the wig before the sales person will actually give you the wig. I asked the sales person if she could take the money and pay for the wig so I wouldn't have to walk to the front of the store. She said she was not allowed. She called the manager. He refused to allow her to pay for the wig and he also refused to do it as well. He said if I do it for me than he would have to do it for everyone. Beauty World is the best beauty supply store in Durham and surrounding areas simply because of their size and the sheer volume of items that are offered. You can literally go into Beauty World, (it's a size of a warehouse) and spend an hour or more there. They have everything with respect to hair, hair extensions, cosmetics, nails and everything else that you can think of. They even accept returns which is rare with beauty supply stores. Beauty world is my one stop shop for my beauty needs. This store has everything you need for ethic hair. They always have my favorite products in stock. When I need to get my hair braided, beauty world is my go to place to buy my hair. If I need help someone is usually there to help me with what I need. However, service can be slow sometimes depending on what section I am in. Wow! As many reviewers have already mentioned, this place is huge. Anything you could possibly need hair care related, you'll find here, which is why I'm giving in 4 stars. However, good luck finding it-- it's a struggle to find a store associate walking around on the floor and there aren't great signs inside to direct you around the store. When you do find an employee, it can be a toss up of how helpful and friendly the employee will be. Still, you go to buy the products, not to make friends with the employees, and the products you'll find (eventually), so I give it 4 stars. read more

Don't bother. Products are over priced and they have zero regard for customer service. I purchased a hair setting mousse but in my haste I picked the wrong brand. To make matters worse the price on the receipt was significantly higher than the price displayed in the aisle. When I tried to exchange it later the same day I was refused the option. Adding insult to injury, the person at the counter accused me of using the product and said I had to call the manufacturer. I've never been treated this way at a store. 11/13/16 ~ My sister, daughter and I were in the store last evening looking at eyeliners, the price was incorrect under the one's that I was going purchase so I went to the counter to purchase them the price was much more than on the stand. I was approached by a sales associate on the other isle who was EXTREMELY rude, using hand and arm motions and quite argumentative! I then asked for the store manager then proceeded to tell him how "unprofessional" the associate was towards me the customer and that It is my choice to spend my money there. Beauty World has ridiculously amazing selection. I think it's a great place to go if you know exactly what you want and are having trouble finding it elsewhere, or know what kind of thing you want and want to be able to browse all the products in the world to choose it. Like some of the other reviews here, I'm not sure I would recommend it if you have noooo idea what you want. You won't be able to really find any staff there that will answer your questions and help you choose a product, or recommend a product, or even tell you more about a product. It's really just all you. So do your product research beforehand to find out what kind of stuff you need. The prices there are pretty good, but I found that one product I wanted, I could buy cheaper on Amazon, or from the manufacturor, or from other websites. So I think there might be a bit of price inflation on other items as well. I still love it though! It's such a treat to go there! read more

I can only give one star due to the lack of customer service. I love wigs and will purchase several at a time if I receive great customer service. No one will help you while you are actually trying on the wigs. They'll sell you a wig cap in a hurry and just disappear. I'm used to someone assisting me and styling the wigs once I try them on and also offering their opinion. I got none of that here. They have a large selection to choose from but the mass majority should be replaced because they look and feel hard. I only purchased one because I'm from out of state and didn't want my trip to this beauty supply to be a big waste of time and gas for the person I asked to bring me in. i purchased a cheap jewelry set for 21.99 which was overpriced but I got it to wear to a function. When I took it out the package, it broke! I took it back on the next open day and they refused to give my money back and only agreed to give me an exchange. The function was over and I had to wear an old set I had after spending 23.00 on a cheap set that broke immediately from removing it from the package. He said some people wear them and bring them back. I showed him a picture with the old necklace but that still was not good enough. Okay. My son and I were goofing off a little bit in the store today while my wife and daughters were shopping. We accidentally knocked some bottles down off an end cap and broke the small protective caps that covered the tops of the bottles. There were about 10 total. About 7 staff members were called over immediately and surrounded us as if we were committing a crime. They were extremely rude even after I said I would pay for the items. Then the manager grabbed his security officer and threatened to call the police on me. In a calm voice I explained that there was no need to treat us this way. I had already agreed several times to pay for any damages so I did not know why I was being threatened. The total for all the product was $118. I paid and my wife and daughters put EVERY item they were going to buy down and we left the store, vowing to NEVER EVER shop there again. I hope they enjoy the $118 they got from us because not only will we bad mouth them on this page, we will make it our personal mission to bad mouth them forever to every person we meet and will NEVER set foot in their business again. The way they treated us was completely uncalled for. It was an accident and the damage was truly minimal. The only good thing that came out of this is that my children got a chance to see how these kinds of people care for the community that supports them. We have spent money in this store almost exclusively since we moved to the Triangle but I guess they don't want business from people like us. We are a hardworking, American family. So we left there and went to a local black owned business where we were appreciated and saved about $40 in the process. read more
