I decided to wait a year before posting this to make sure it's what I wanted but after a year, my…read moreheart still hurts when I think about my mom's funeral so I need to get this off my chest. This is not where I would have picked but it's where my mother wanted her service so my sister and I respected her wishes. So many weird details went wrong and were never corrected that I wish I had spoken up about. They asked me for 7 songs (such a specific number) for my mother's funeral. I still burn CDs so I should have made it but I let them handle it as they said they'd take care of it all. They asked me for 7 songs but only put 4 on the CD. They cut 3 without asking me and 2 of them were more important than some that they picked. Also two songs were skipping the entire viewing. I was annoyed but focused on the hoardes of people I had to fake smile at. I assumed someone would swoop in and change the CD but once the viewing started the staff disappeared. Music was very important to my mom. I didn't know who to turn to when someone my mother wouldn't have wanted at her viewing showed up with her fake (admitted) service dog or what to do when a group I allowed to sing one song turned into three songs, one worse than the next. I'm not gonna lie and give them 1 star because the entire thing wasn't awful, but I would not want this funeral home handling my services. I understand that at any wedding, funeral, or other big event there will be mistakes and things that go wrong but these were all incredibly preventable and fixable things that just went ignored. That's just the truth.

Sorry to have to post such a disappointing review. My Father is buried at Slyvania Hills and,…read morerecently, my Mom joined him. The day after the service, my sister got a phone call from an administration representative at Sylvania Hills saying that we owed $2,500 to open up my Mom's grave. My sister shared that my Mom had died just a few days ago, and that she would get the funds together asap, but the representative persisted. Before hanging up, she told my sister that if she did not pay that day, she was going to send her bill to the collection agency. My sister was extremely upset and called my brother to discuss and discovered that the Sylvania Hills representative had called him as well with a demand for monies. Rattled, my sister called back and put the $2,500 on her credit card. NOW, we see on their price list that the cost to open the grave is $500. (We thought $2,500 was exorbitant, especially given that it's 2.5 times the national average). My sister looked at the invoice and someone had typed in $2,500, not $500. She then called and asked for a receipt but they are denying the request. Sylvania Hills, could you respond, please?

I was living in Washington, DC at the time. I tried to sell the plots, and contacted several funeral directors in the valley. They all told me that dealing with the company that now owns Sylvania Hills is nearly impossible. I then advertised of the plots for sale in the Beaver County Times; still had no success in selling. I ended up donating the four plots to a local church. Even then it was difficult trying to get the title to the plots turned over to the church. The representatives at Sylvania Hills were terrible. They did not return phone calls, and stone-walled me every step of the way. They were not interested in spending any time taking an action that would not profit them or the company. Avoid this company at any cost !!!!!

We were informed the cemetery had been sold and they had a few issues with other funerals. It took three phone calls from the funeral home to even get a call back from someone. Then they wanted payment up front, which we said we would give them the check the day of burial. We needed a small hole as she was cremated and just being buried in a decorative box. We were given a time to be at the cemetery and our family started showing up 15 minutes prior and no one from the cemetery was there. Once the funeral home arrived with the remains we looked around for an employee which we could not find. We measured the depth of the hole and it was 21 inches. The height of the container was 9 inches. The law states you must have 18 inches of dirt from the top of the container. The tools were left so my brother and brother in law dug the rest of the hole to meet requirements. We put the container in the ground and filled the hole back up with dirt. As we finished a worker came up to us and said "you did my job". We said well, you weren't here. He stated he was sitting in his van and we should have seen him. Seven of us did not see him at all. The employee was argumentative and very disrespectful. He stated we were the ones causing problems because use we were asking questions. The whole experience was awful and so sad that in our grieving we have to deal with this. We also paid 60% more than a cemetery in a neighboring town. I will be contacting the Better Business Bureau and the Pennsylvania Cemetery, Cremation & Funeral Association. If you had an experience please share it so we can get this business to do better for families and the many people buried in Union Cemetery.
