So plan on bringing your own poop bags if you have a dog/s. And plan on packing out any trash that you pack in. :) There is a bathroom at the trailhead. Follow the signs and you will get there. The disappointment falls were quite lovely. there are also a lot of wildflowers still blooming which is awesome.

We had first time riders who got lots of attention and patience, and we had more experienced riders in our group who were encouraged to ride off the trail and test new skills. Lots of attention paid to matching horse personalities with the riders. We had such a great time that we returned for a second day of riding with 3 of us doing the cattle drive (amazing experience) and the rest doing another trail ride. The whole experience was so laid back and fun. Feeding the orphaned calves, playing on the homemade Zipline, playing with the four adorable ranch dogs, and the great conversation with Ed, his kids, and his ranch hands were icing on the cake.

The resort is a ranch and not the Four Seasons, so let's dial down our expectations and recognize the workings of the ranch. There will be dirt, poop, feathers, hair, urine, and unkempt struck and other things gentle folk may find unsavory. We found the ranch charming. We have experienced many close encounters with wild bison and most were less than rewarding, but exciting. Terry removes this. The train creaks, and groans into the herd. Windows open, and your bison friend pop up for food. You can touch them and enjoy close photos/videos. Kids will love this and animal lovers also. Your trip back the platform will provide some ranch insights and views of horse stables. That was our visit. You may also trail ride on horseback and even participate in dude ranching. Whether it is through the Colorado mountainside like us or the Texas hill country Travis is your man. He did two rides for us. First with my 7 yr old girl and wife. Then a second ride with 5 of us family members. He is engaging, interesting, knowledgeable about his surroundings, and willing to teach the art of horseback riding. Her prefers texts to book and will meet you to guide you to the trailheads. He did a couple 2 hour rides for us but I know he does 2/4/8 hr rides upon request. I give this review a 5 star but it was a 4 star experience. Only because the Troublesome Fire of 2020 burnt up a lot of Aspen trees along the train and it is slow to come back. Not on Travis just not as beautiful as other parts of CO.

This review is specifically for our experience at The Tavern…read more We came in with a large group the Saturday of Labor Day weekend while we were camping nearby at Bellaire Lake Campground. Part of our party (two adults and four kids) went ahead of us as we had dogs and needed a place where the dogs could be with us. Luckily, The Tavern was accommodating to that and we could sit with them on the patio. Since they got there ahead of us, their experience seemed to go smoothly. The rest of us (four adults, two teens, and a five year old) got our orders in and were warned that the kitchen was backed up and it would be a while for our food. And it was a while, about an hour or so. Aside from the youngest who was desperately hungry for her pizza, we managed fine. The drinks were delicious enough to tide us over: I got their take on an old fashioned, and my friend got a mule after someone in line recommended it to me. She said it was the best mule she has had at a bar in ages. The food was good and very decently priced. I got the caesar salad and a personal pizza and enjoyed both. It was good to not pay exorbitant prices in an area where options for restaurants are limited. It was a perfect day to chill out on the patio, and we also got the pleasure of the feral kittens who came to visit. After the long wait for food, we were anxious to get back to our campsite and settle in for the evening. Everything has to be ordered at the bar, and tabs need to be closed out there as well. This is where the waiting game continued, and where it became very clear they were not prepared for the holiday weekend rush. The woman who had taken our orders at the bar was in the back managing things in the kitchen, and the man at the bar was also busy being a sound tech for the musician that came in. There was another guy standing behind the bar doing absolutely nothing. It seemed he worked there, but only at the direction at the other bartender-sound tech. Which wouldn't have been a big deal if the line weren't taking up the bulk of the space in the small indoor dining area. It took at least half an hour if not longer to be in that line just to close our tab. When we finally departed, between choosing food, placing orders, waiting for food, and then waiting to close tabs, we had been there almost two and a half hours. It is very apparent that this is a well-loved local joint based on the interactions I had, the custom Yeti pints they had for customers, and regulars going behind the bar to pour their own pints. The atmosphere was great, and I love that. As I mentioned, restaurant options are limited, so beggars can't be choosers for our one night where we chose to dine out rather than cook at camp. But knowing how busy holiday weekends are, I was left disappointed but how things were being managed. I'd check this place out again on a calmer night or later in the evening for drinks, but definitely skipping the rush hours.

It also made it easier to connect with and understand our horses to make the experience more enjoyable. HCT was otherwise fairly priced & reasonably understanding if customers are running late. The trails were beautiful and unique. The dogs running along with us were entertaining. I couldn't have asked for a better time! Note: They have a little outhouse on the side, but unless you're ok with those, be sure to use the bathroom before!
