The kid wanted to do horseback riding since that has become a "tradition" when we are in Estes since she was 2 years old. We went to one place and they had a defined schedule for rides and were all booked. So drove over the Sombrero and were able to get a horse right away. We like Sombrero because horseback riding is "on demand." They don't have a set schedule. You get a horse whenever you are ready. They have great flexibility. Not only can you leave on the guided tour on your schedule, they offer different lengths of time. In July 2026, $50 for 30 minutes, $100 for an hour, and $135 for 2 hours. Cost is per person. There are longer trips too but I did not pay attention to that pricing. The kid and wife did 1 hour and really enjoyed it. Age requirement is 6 and up for a horse. They also have pony rides for kids under 6. The guides tend to be college kids who work for tips so be sure to tip them. Everyone who works here is super nice and friendly. The horses seem to be well cared for and happy. We were very pleased with the experience and undoubtedly will return the next time we are in Estes. read more

Took a group of 11 girl scouts for a 1 hour ride. This is what the girls had chosen to do for the final event of the year. Pros : 1. easy to book ride. I needed some extra slots opened up so my whole group could go. It was easy to contact them via email. got response back within 24 hours and was easily able to book the remaining spots. 2. communication was friendly and professional 3. arrived 30 minutes early as requested. It is clear where to park and also where to check in at. 4. Went to the window. This is when you will sign your waivers. 5. Horses were already ready to go. Pretty shortly after we all checked in and got waivers done, we got our helmets. They also had saddlebags available for those who wanted it. 6. You can carry your purse/backpack during the ride, you just can not get into it. 7. The helmet is required for those under 18. 8. They had the horses ready to go prior to our arrival. They chose horses for everyone and we loaded up fairly quickly. 9. Off we went. The ride was nice. Several beautiful views along the way. 10. Horses that liked to nibble they had a little nose guard type thing on them (it was breathable) so they couldn't stop for snacks with inexperienced riders. We had several of those in our group. Cons: 1. price is a fair amount higher than some other local spots in loveland or red feather. 2. the ride is horses nose to butt the entire ride, single file. Was not really able to chat. 3. our guides did tell us a few things but overall were not super chatty. We enjoyed our experience overall. They are highly organized and that was very much appreciated. They will take pictures of each rider near the beginning if you want a copy it is $10 per rider you want a copy of. read more

Really conflicted in this review. That staff was so kind. I've never ridden western, so I had a few questions on how to get the horse to back up and stop if needed. Staff said I wouldn't need to know either of those because the horses didn't really spook and they didn't need any space between them. About one minute into the ride ALL of our horses spooked. My daughter attempted to do a one reign stop which didn't work. My horse jumped in place and kept spooking. My husbands horse was pretty steady other than a little kick. After this all the horses were so close together we had no room to steer or back up. My daughter, who has ridden for over a year was so uncomfortable we ended the ride. This goes with saying no horse is spook proof but that's how these horses were advertised. If we didn't have some experience I don't think we would have been able to ride out the spooking. Again, staff was nice but more instruction would have helped. They did say they would do a full refund so that's really nice. read more

We made reservations online for the one-hour ride and were able to walk right up, sign our waivers, get our helmets, and get on a horse. Our trail guide, Kolton, was excellent & made sure we felt comfortable on our horses before we left for the ride. He told us about the ranch, the horses, how he came to be a guide, & answered all our questions. The trail was fun and not too challenging for beginners. My seven year old is 40" and Moose was the right gentleman for a kid's first ride. Fence was my mare and she perfection. My son also loved his horse but I forget his name (Dakota? It was a town or state name). We did an hour ride since it was the kids' first ride ever and we didn't know what to expect. It was the perfect time for us, as we got to ride by ourselves. Ill-fitting saddles, with every horse in the exact same awful bit (cuz who cares what each individual horse needs if you break their spirit). A "farrier" slaps on a set of shoes before they head out, it doesn't even look like the horses get trimmed first. Saddle sores, midline hoof cracks, various behavioral issues like biting or rolling, and overall terrible body condition with some sort of skinny it doesn't look like they eat, and many with such sensitive areas you can't even touch them. Excited for my first horse back ride since I was a kid, it never occurred to me that the Colorado warmth I've become so accustomed to would be missing here. I was in for a surprise when the middle-aged blonde woman "greeted" us. She was nasty and rude from the start, slamming the waivers down in front of us, snapping at us when we had questions, and showing extreme impatience. I don't understand why you'd treat people like this, I'm sure you know who you are because it was clear you treat guests like this regularly, you are so disrespectful. Odd because absolutely every other staff member went out of their way to help everyone feel comfortable and welcome. My advice is to keep her in the back away from the city slickers, paying guests who don't know about horses and don't appreciate the poor attitude as soon as they arrive and at every interaction. Taylor was our wrangler and he was funny and entertaining. The ride was beautiful. He went out of his way to help everyone on the ride feel comfortable and safe. My husband and I took our daughters, ages 12 & 14, on the two hour trail ride. It was fun. Our tour guide was Katie she was great at helping us and talked just enough to be entertaining but not annoying. This trail is very rocky which makes it a little more adventurous, my husband's horse did slip though and land on its elbows so we felt bad but no injury. The weather was perfect too, we had a blast. The horses though look bored and rough. My horses hair (the mane) was very matted. The horses never get showers it is very obvious. The hooves are cared for, although if a horses shoe falls off they continue to ride it over the rocky trail until the horse shows pain then they take it off rotation and put new shoes on it. I felt bad for the horses, no toys, no horse fun. They aren't allowed to snack along the trail at all, they're meant to do this though but they can't. It's so sad. The horses never raise their heads fully. Not even when teathered. I wish they'd take better care of the horses. read more

I had my first horseback-riding experience at Sombrero Ranch, and it was a lot of fun! my friends and I were in our own group that was led through a trail by one of the ladies who worked at the ranch. Before we took off, she gave us an easy tutorial on how to ride a horse through the trail (starting, stopping, turning, etc). We went with the 1-hour trail, and it was very scenic; naturally, there's plenty of opportunities for pictures for the gram. We also had a good time getting to know our leader, who shared about her life on the ranch as well as a little history about the area. Our horses were pretty well trained, and they are already pretty familiar with the trails; so riding the horses wasn't too difficult. We also shared a few laughs whenever our horses needed a "pitstop" occasionally. Some tips: - While phones are allowed to take pictures of your experience, just make sure that you can hold it with one hand because you obviously need to keep at least one hand on the reins (so iPhone Pluses and Galaxy Notes probably won't work here). - Your clothes will get dirty, stinky, and maybe even a bit hairy afterwards. You'll probably want to wear some older / spare clothes for this; at least go with some clothes that you'd be willing to toss in the washing machine. - They will have cameras along the trail, and you can order these pictures afterwards. This is one of the many fun ways to spend a few hours enjoying mother nature in Estes Park; however, this is a business. The older woman at The check"in office was all about the safety wavers and the money - it much of a friendly spirit. While employees enjoy the air conditioning and indoor restrooms, patrons get to wait in the hot sun with no shade and the option to use one of two nasty port-a-potties that wreak. The horses all know the various trails and timed is wasted as the trail guides pace the ride with frequent stops (every 10-15 horse steps) to check on trail riders and horse potty breaks. Not many of the trail guides and horse handlers have much of a personality either as they appear exhausted from the days work (6 days a week). Additionally, many of the riders could not even hear the trail guides comments or instruction due to riding in a single long column. At $80/person, and a large number of people signing up for adventure... they can put a little profit into customer care a reception! If you are considering riding with this company, be sure to: 1. Ride with a small group of 3-4 riders. 2. Use the restroom and hydrate before you check in. 3. Manage your expectations upfront... you will ride slow, in a single column, horse nose to horse butt, and you will not see to many breathtaking scenes other than a few snapshots of the valley and distant ridge lines until you reach the top where you will pause several minutes before returning back to the stables where the next group has already blindly paid their fees with high expectations. There are limited options for horseback riding in Estes Park, so if the employees are not courteous/polite up on the phone or at check-in, roll the dice and spend your money on the other company around the corner. read more

Me and my friend rented a car to drive out here from Denver to horseback ride. Unlike a lot of the other places I called, this place is open YEAR ROUND. They had lots of open slots, and this allowed us to plan our day to our liking. We did the 2-hour trail, which was definitely worth the extra $12. The horses were beautiful and the views were unreal.
