It's very unfortunate that I have to express my disappointment with Elkhorn Stables. I did try very hard to talk to someone on staff about this. I called three times and also sent an email, but got no response. Our reservation was for October 17th at 11:00 a.m. however it was 11:40 before I sat on a horse. Apparently there were quite a few Mix-Ups where the guides did not know they were 2-hour reservations, one hour reservations and a private tour all waiting to go out at the same time. The one guide who said his name was Nate introduced himself but kept walking back to the office without any explanation for the delay. All he would have had to say was "gosh folks sorry for the delay will be with you in a moment" or something equally as vague to acknowledge our presence and the time ticking away. When we finally did get on horses that seemed to be randomly chosen, the young man leading our group never spoke a word. He never small talked, he never introduced himself he never offered to take photos, or ask if we had any horse experience. The only thing I heard him say was to tell one guest to "kick her harder" after one of the horses was stopped on the trail. The ride itself was okay, but only okay as we seemed to just do zigzags through the woods behind the barn. I really wanted it to get better as my friend and I were very excited about being on horses in the mountains. The very end was when the young man held my horse while I dismounted and asked me if it was too dusty being at the end of the trail, when I told him it was okay his reply was "I hate it, I hate all of it" then he led my horse away and that was the end. We only ended up being on the horses about an hour and 20 minutes even though we had paid for a 2-hour ride, but by then then we were so frustrated, as it seemed so many guests were, we just went to the car and left. Overall we felt jipped out of our money but also out of our precious vacation time. The two young men who were guides could benefit from some customer service training. we were never welcomed, thanked, or really even spoken to. I wish management had called us back after leaving three messages. Maybe that's typical behavior at the very end of the season, however their website says they're open year round. I cannot recommend Elkhorn Stables based on my experience with them. read more

Amazing memory to have, if you're on the fence--it's so worth it! Our guide, Jamie, was great! He is very passionate, answers any questions, and can share not only history to the beautiful countryside but also a lot about the horses. We did the 2-hour ride, it was a perfect amount. You'll go up and down the mountain side, if you're lucky (or not I guess) you may see some wild animals depending on the season (we did not but loved the piece of National Forest you go through), you'll have a breath taking view, & the horses do exceptionally well with what seems to be difficult terrain. If you're skeptical of horses, this stable seems to know their horses very well and they were so calm and well taken care of. The team we met were all kind, respectful, easy to talk with, and are doing humbling work. Overall--a majestic experience and I'm glad we made the hour drive to specifically come to this place! Looks can be deceiving and this place is certainly the case. It looks kinda rundown but don't let that deter you. We were also able to get a reservation the day before because we found out reservations are required for RMNP. Please, if you're considering a horseback tour, stop by Elkhorn. This place is amazing! Nash was our guide and he was really knowledgeable and experienced. He was incredibly patient with the little kids, the youngest being my 6yo. The horses were gentle although the downhill gave me a mild panic attack. My younger one loves the 2 cats and dog she saw and she said the horses were really nice. She was a little short for controlling the horse but she did ok and the horses seemed to know the drill. The views were spectacular even though it rained on us for about 15 minutes but we were mostly dry at the halfway point. It was serene and a great experience we were not planning for. I would absolutely come back here if it wasn't so hard on my back. However, I am certainly willing to allow the family to go on a ride without me the next time I'm in the area. read more

Absolutely would go again when in Colorado! The people here were so nice and helpful. And the price was definitely more than reasonable considering the amazing views you'll get to see while on the trail! Not to mention it was the only stable in Estes offering rides at the time we wanted to go(first week in May). My fiancé and I had gone to Colorado for a bday trip and decided we wanted to go horseback riding. We wanted it to be more of a special moment so we opted for the 2-hour private trail ride. We're not really experienced riders but we have ridden before. Our guide was very attentive the entire 2-hour ride and also made sure to give us helpful tips about the horses we were riding (I was told mine liked to stop frequently and would try to stop to eat several times so I was prepared to handle that more so than if he hadn't told me). We were taken all over the property. Quite a ways into the woods and mountains, away from the buildings and houses that were down below. Our guide told us all about Colorado and talked about his life and listened as we talked about ours. We really liked how personal the trail ride felt and felt as though we had known this person for years. He really made the entire experience really comfortable and engaging. We weren't quite prepared for just how cold it was going to be that morning and our guide would frequently check on us throughout the entire ride which was nice. We even stopped for pictures a few times. If you have the time, definitely stop by Elkhorn Stables for a fun filled adventure! read more

My husband and I, along with another couple, decided to ride horses while in Estes Park. I called to make sure they were open and they were super accommodating! It wasn't busy so we headed on over. The place isn't fancy-just as the online reviews has warned-but oh my goodness!! We had the most amazing time. "Mom" took us up the mountain and showed us sights we never thought we'd see in person. It looked like a TV show. Patches of snow were all around us but the horse were so well behaved. This was one of our favorite things we did and I'm so glad we gave it a try. read more

The stables don't look like much but this place is awesome! First off their horses are in GREAT health! They are strong and sure footed. You see they feed them alfalfa hay (which is expensive) and genuinely care about the horses. Making sure the animals aren't abused is my first priority! We did the 2hr tour and the views were breathtaking! Grace was our wrangler and she was awesome! She knew so much about the land and the horses. And she took awesome pictures for us! read more

Wow, what fun and for cheap! $50/hr per person. We had an awesome tour guide who breezed thru the rules and got us onto the horses in a pretty quick fashion. All the horses were lovely! The trail itself isn't much but the views are great and really, it's just fun to ride!!! Note: we took the 5 pm tour and the horses were hungry and tired by then so suggest to ride a lil earlier if you want a smoother ride. I will come here again! read more

Arrived at Elkhorn Stables around 9:30 AM. Hoping to ride horses on the snow, but there was no snow. The weather is unpredictable and can't be controlled. We had a BLAST!!! Jordan was an amazing tour guide. We did the 2 hour tour for $80 per person (great price)!!! The scenery and trails were beautiful. The horses were very well trained and the overall experience was fantastic!! We would definitely come back to Elkhorn Stables. My 10 year old daughter who had never ridden a horse felt very comfortable on the horse they chose for her. It is very safe for all ages. The 2 hour ride was the perfect amount of time. We feel like the 1 hour trip would have been too short. The time flew by. We were able to stop and take amazing pictures. We highly recommend Elkhorn and suggest anyone coming up to Estes Park MUST come ride horses. read more

My husband and I had been looking forward to this trail ride for weeks, as had my parents and their two friends who were in town all the way from MI. We were told by two separate employees over the phone that it was only $5 extra per person to make it a private group trail ride, so that is what we made a reservation for. Upon arrival, we were told that instead of the $85/person we had been promised, it was actually $100/person for private group rides. There is no mention of this on the website. When we explained that two of their employees (and gave names, but they were conveniently currently out on a ride) had told us it was $85 they insisted it had always been $100 and that was all they would accept. We were extremely disappointed and as other stables are (understandably) already booked day-of, weren't able to go for a trail ride anywhere. No COVID precautions seemed to be in place either (masks were not worn by any employees, no disinfecting of pens between uses, etc.) My husband will be going booking elsewhere when we go on our own ride in two weeks. read more
