Ok five stars just because I had one of these while skating on the Canal today! I have not done this literally for at least 20 years. It was my wife's first experience. This is the ultimate Ottawa, Canadian Winter experience! By this I mean having an over priced, overly sweat, heart attack on deep fried bread while skating at -10C during Winterlude on the Rideau Canal. Unique experience in my books. Beaver Tails are messy! Half the effort is not getting your gloves full of it and the other half is trying not to get it on your face! Between that and skating you need the energy boost the sugar is going to give you! Sure it's just fried dough but these folks continue to innovate. All of their variations are really delicious. Until this summer visit we had only had these treats on the frozen canal during winter fest ( I think they taste better when out skating). Since the canal had boats in it we stopped at their Byward Market stand. We had the maple butter - very good. The next day the savory garlic and cheese version - good but not what we remembered. We came here as this is definitely a "MUST-HAVE" in Ottawa. They have these in Toronto as well, no huge difference for me tbh. We had guests from another country with us and advised them to try this and the smoked meat in the border of Gatineau and Ottawa. So we took them on this journey together. We ordered the reeses peanut butter cup one and shared one amongst 4 people, not everyone has the sweet tooth so I think sharing just worked for us all. We went on a rainy day so it was difficult to enjoy, as the rain wasn't stopping, we couldn't stand at the tables with stools. As everything closes early in Ottawa, we went around 6pm so the cafes and coffee shops were closed. All in all, I don't think you miss anything by visiting the Toronto location. read more

While obviously not the dining destination that is Montreal, two and a half days in Ottawa would find my mother, aunt, and I nicely sated by a pair of the capital's best restaurants as well as some of the finest bakeries in town. Never one to shy away from sweets, whether for breakfast or for snacks each of the five stops was pre-planned based on the recommendation of friends and 'foodies' alike and whether an effect of modest expectations or the fact that each stop was truly quite good I have to say we came away quite impressed with each. Beginning first with the famous, a stop at Beavertails seemed essential to the trip and after some discussion as to which location (and which Beavertail) was best we opted for the Byward Market location where a single coffee and a "La Quebecoise" with Maple Butter were ordered, prepped, served, and consumed in less than 10 minutes. Stretched and fried, crunchy on the outside and pliable within, sweet and large enough to share the overall experience was really no different than an elephant ear at the fair but the addition of the Maple Butter and eating at the original location are definitely something I'd recommend - though I cannot say the same for the coffee which was acidic and thin, like Tim Horton's but slightly less bitter. read more

It tastes great because it isn't healthy and who cares, if you're touring Ottawa, you've walked enough that it doesn't matter. Goddammit, I had my first beavertail at this particular stand and was looking for more BeaverTails Pastry locations for the rest of the trip. Also, my dad stole my cookies and cream tail while I slept and I will NEVER forgive him for it. For anybody who doesn't know, beavertails are basically the Canadian wheat doughnut. As far as I can tell, you'll only be able to get beavertails at this chain of stands/stores (BeaverTails Pastry) as the dessert is trademarked by the BeaverTails Canada Inc. As the name implies (beavers being Canada's national symbol/animal), this pastry is something of a national symbol in terms of Canadian culture and food. At the time, we had been driving through several of the eastern Canadian cities, and there was always at least one or two stands in the city. Many recommend you eat it hot, but I actually prefer mine cold. It becomes chewier in the process. Interestingly enough, while the wheat-based dough isn't gluten-free friendly, beavertails ARE apparently VEGAN as well as VEGETERIAN friendly according to the stand manager I talked to. My personal favorite is the cookies and cream. It's messy, but I like the sweetness and the extra crunch throughout working through the length of the pastry. Cinnamon sugar tails are actually less sweet than the cookies and cream one, and you can definitely pay more attention/taste more of the fry dough if you order this one. Mom's favorite is the nutella with banana, which apparently A LOT of people like it with nutella. Meanwhile, my Canadian friend insists I have to try the beavertail with maple AT SOME POINT (and I'm sure it's good, but I'm also 80% sure she's just having me on). Also be aware that this is not gluten-free for Be aware, this location is a stand. There's a counter attached to the side and a couple of high chairs and tables, but they tend to be taken up pretty quickly. I didn't see any real protection from the weather for those tables though. At most, there is a covered overhang over where you order and buy your treat. Additionally, I was told they tend to remove the furniture when the snows really start coming down and that they still get a steady stream of people coming by even during the coldest month. Not surprising, considering that many people seem to find Byward Market beautiful in the winter and a hot beavertail delicious in the cold. At some point, I really want to come back to visit during the winter just to see it all for myself. read more

There's this one in the Market and there's one out at the Tanger outlets. I'm not sure if you can count the BeaverTails express at Dow's lake? Doughy, crispy, chewy and sweet all at once. I have had all of them over the years but the Killaloe sunrise (named after the town they were created in) is still my all time favorite.
