Cute little cafe with lots of pastries and savoury goods as well. We came here for the drinks and was a bit overwhelmed with how good the pastries looked (didn't know which one to try!) Ended up getting the pistachio and Dubai chocolate croissant. As for the drinks, we got the matcha and the Hojicha with espresso shots. They serve coffee from Hatch (which is probably one of my favourite back in Toronto). Unfortunately, we didn't get to try the croissants fresh but they were still tasted buttery and flakey. The flavour and sweetness was the right amount (perfect for my Asian tastebuds). The drinks were also really good! It was pretty busy inside but there's plenty of seating (might not be great if you want to chill and study but great for hanging out with friends). Dao is located in the ugly (subjective) but functional shopping strip on Merivale. Parking is a crush on weekends, but several lots are joined so as long as you are ok with a brief walk, all good. As you walk in, the contrast from outdoor ugliness to indoor airiness and people happily chatting is surprising. What is Dao doing here?! It's a good surprise. The interior is stunning. Bright and airy, white punctuated with black. Plants break up the space. The seating was full, but turning over, so we got seats by the time we needed them. Service was excellent. I was in Nepean for my oldest's baseball game and the ball diamond had no restrooms. A full bladder forced me in the car to find the closest spot with a restroom. So grateful it did, otherwise I would have never found this incredible gem. Apple Maps brought up Dao Cafe. I was surprised to see it is open until 2200 and I fully expected it to be empty. Boy was I wrong. The cafe, which has lovely restrooms, was bumping. They offer a wide variety of coffees and teas. Will definitely be back to try a caffeinated beverage the next time I'm in the area before dinner. The pastries and desserts all looked incredible! The outside looks like colored white chocolate which made it hard to break into and a little too sweet imo. But the mousse was very yummy and I loved the crisp at the bottom! Two months ago, we stopped by this bakery to try out some of their cakes. The cafe looked cute and the decor was very modern. Everything looked very appealing. We decided to try out the mango passion cake, taro mille crepe cake, and Japanese white peach shortcake. I also got an iced HK style milk tea. Unfortunately, the cakes were way under par. The mango passion cake was very sour. The white peach shortcake was pretty much all whipped cream and didn't have much cake in it. The taro mille crepe cake was just flat. Dao Bake & Sip Cafe is a cool newly opened Cafe. They sell some baked goods brought in from Toronto, but they also have goods baked in house. They sell drinks like coffee and tea as well. The inside is beautiful and everything is expensive, lol. Those familiar with pastries from Asian bakeries found in Toronto will recognize the names. They have cheese tarts from Pablo Cheese Tart. They have Cream Buns from Hattendo. They have macarons from Daan Go Cake Labs. Their croissants are baked in-house, but are a collaboration with Chris Kwok, of Chokwoklat fame. They use coffee from Hatch. Being from Toronto, this place makes me feel a bit closer to home, haha. I got a chocolate croissant ($3.85), a White Peach Cream Bun ($4.60) and an Amaou Strawberry Cream Bun ($4.80). The chocolate croissant was very crispy and flaky. It tasted fresh and was delicious. Not too greasy. The cream buns were soft and the filling was fluffy and airy. The peach bun had real pieces of peaches in it. The strawberry bun had real pieces of strawberries in it. The place looked immaculate. Service was courteous. I do like that the prices of most items are the same price as they are in Toronto. The prices of the Daan Go and Pablo Cheese Tart items are the same. There's a slight mark up on the Hattendo items but just between $0.25-$0.75 more. The cafe is located in a strip mall. Came by after skipping the massive lineups on the weekend checked out this new cafe and bakery. They have a lot of items here and some of it seems like they're cross promoting with other bakeries or they have similar names to other bakeries. I only picked up a peach and pistachio tart on this trip and it was excellent. One of my favourite things the tart is that it wasn't super sweet. I'd definitely come back and grab a 6 or 12 pack the next time I'm here. They're still on a soft opening and I did encounter a few hiccups but I have no doubt they'll get through them. After moving from Toronto to Ottawa, and not having a lot of these cute Asian desserts here, I was so excited that Dao cafe opened in Ottawa. It's such a cute concept since they brought together several separate brands of desserts like Pablo, Hattendo and Daan Go. I had the cheese tarts, which were yummy as usual. The original is always good and the matcha has mochi balls and a bit of red bean in it. It's also a few dollars more than the original. I also tried the Hattendo cream buns finally, but honestly it was very underwhelming. I don't feel like the texture of the bun suited the cream. I got the plain cream one and the peach cream (seasonal) but the flavour of the peach one was very light. I don't think I would get these buns again. I didn't get anything from Daan Go but the macarons and cakes were very cute! Also, there was a huge line because they had just opened. We waited like half an hour but someone came out to offer us iced jasmine tea infused with fruit as samples, and it was delicious!! I've been here a few times now and have tried most of their desserts. The majority of it is alright, not great. The drinks are fun but also not amazing. Overall the taste does not correlate with the pricing. You're paying for the esthetics more than anything. I wouldn't come back on my own unless I'm entertaing out of town guests. read more

I recently ordered the Matcha Swirl Croissant & it was good! The buttery & flakey texture that you would want your croissant to be! The matcha flavor too was evident. However, when I divided the croissant with my hands, I expected an oooey gooey experience (from what I saw from their IG), but it was a let down. It could be that the cold weather had made the fat/butter component of the filling solidified a bit. Or the croissant had been on display for awhile. I also ordered their Wild Butterfly latte & it was sooo good! The Matcha Swirl, if I'm not mistaken, is only available on weekends. The service was good. There was a long queue when I came in just before lunch on Saturday. The ordering was quick. As for the ambiance, it was good. Place was light & airy. However it was busy. There was also NOWHERE to sit. I hope they would be able to implement a 30 min to 1 hour stay for the customers as some (I observed) were just there taking their time (eg. playing a video game, etc). Got to try Dao Cafe this week! It's right beside Tiger Sugar, but they also serve speciality tea and coffees here. It's newly opened, so it's still very bright, shiny, and clean. There are two doors, with the entrance on the right, which I did not realize until I entered through the exit haha oops! I had never heard of Pablo cheese tarts or Hattendo cream buns before, but they seemed to be popular, so I got a classic Pablo cheese tart, custard and matcha Hattendo cream buns, and a couple of garlic cheese buns like Coy W. suggested. I chose the classic cheese tart because it was my first time trying it, but they also had chocolate, matcha, premium (brûléed top), and bunch of different mini tarts. The classic had a thin layer of apricot jelly on top. The light and fluffy inside and flaky crust kind of reminded me of the Hong Kong-style egg tarts I always used to order at dim sum, but less eggy and flakier crust. What I liked best is that it wasn't too sweet (don't expect a savoury cheese tart because it's more of a light dessert). Next time I'd like to try the matcha one, which also has red adzuki bean paste and mocha inside, as well as the mini tarts, which have different toppings and/or fillings like mango and roasted chocolate almond marshmallow. I asked the server which cream buns are the most popular and she said strawberry, matcha, and custard. I got the matcha and custard. The custard was quite plain, just a bit of sweetness. The matcha had a hint of matcha flavour, but still a little if they sweetness and not too bitter or strong. Both were very soft and had a pillowy texture. Tasted fresh! The garlic cheese buns were not at all what we expected! We ate them in the car before heading home because they were still warm and crispy. My husband thought they had a very strong garlic flavour, but I could've done with more (given, I'm a huge garlic lover). The cheese inside wasn't the kind of cheese you might be used to and is like a much lighter, whipped cream cheese, but wetter? It was also sweeter, which was surprising. I would've preferred a more savoury, salty inside, but it was still good. Service was great! They pull out a tray and you let them know what you'd like so that they can either put it in a bag or box right away. They also asked me if I wanted disposable paper plates, napkins, and cutlery for the cake (cheese tart). Super nice, very quick and easy. I went on a weekday with lots of people seated but no lineups. Will definitely be back for more! read more

This cafe is so aesthetically pleasing! I came here with a few friends and it was quite busy. We managed to grab a table after ordering thankfully. You can order in or takeout. This is a new place in Ottawa , opened about 11 weeks ago. Its a very bright and cost place. The best for Instagram pics! There are a variety of cakes, pastries, savory croissants, hot and cold drinks. The staff is very friendly and happy to explain the menu in detail. I went during a busy time of the day so I had to wait for a little more than 30 minutes until a found a seat. So make sure to plan your visit accordingly. After hearing lots about Dao when they first opened up on Merivale, I finally went in to check it out. The café had a cool vibe to it with its modern Japanese Tea House feel. I tried the Pablo Cheese Tart and Evil Garlic Bun during my visit. I ended up liking the Pablo Cheese Tart wayyy better than the Evil Garlic Bun. The tart was creamy and rich and delicious! The bun wasn't to my taste - normally I love all things garlic, but I really didn't like how there was a sweetness to the Evil Garlic Bun - I wouldn't order it again. I saw that there were also cute animal macarons available, but I didn't try them this visit. There were lots of other treats to choose from, so another visit down the road will definitely be in order. This place is a cool addition to Ottawa's food scene! read more

My husband and I have been eyeing this place for a while and finally went for brunch. What a beautiful sit down cafe. I loved everything about it. Nice decor, lots of yummy things to choose from. We both ordered a slice of cake. I had the cute mouse and cheesecake it was so damn good and my husband had the mango mousse cake, which was also very good. He ordered the butter chicken croissant, which they warmed up. I had the smoked salmon and cream cheese. Again, both very good. Surprisingly, we were both stuffed after eating these two things even though they looked so small. We also order one of their smoothie coffees. Came up to about $60.
