They've only been open a few weeks but already have a great assortment. The shop is curated with mid-century modern and modern furniture, art and records, plus clothes like vintage Hawkeye apparel, hats and jerseys. Fun fact: The owners know the team behind FindFurnish in Minneapolis, a similar store that has made trips down to Iowa City to buy some of their pieces before selling them at much higher, big-city prices. The shop is small but filled with all sorts of fun furniture and household items. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming and offered to help out with anything I needed. One of the staff informed me that any Alessi item could be ordered through the shop and purchased at the sale discount. Not a bad deal! If only I had more money to spend!

They are part of the TJ Maxx family however their main business is in the sale of Home Goods. I am just going to remain candid and be real with y'all. You can seriously do a lot of damage to your pocket here. I don't normally shop for home décor but one can easily get addicted to places like this especially if home décor is your jam. I had some self-restraint and spent about $60.00 at the sto! With that money I got a candle, two vases, a wooden laser cut birthday card and a pack of Christmas cards to last me through this season and the next. That being said, one can easily spend well over $50 due to the lure of "cute-ish" items. I get people need "retail therapy" however, choose wisely and ask yourself, "Do I really need this?" If you do, by all means shop away however in this economy, exercise some caution.

In some ways, Artifacts is the mother of antique stores, with several rooms filled with treasures, both small and large. It's right across the street from John's Market, and easily a world away. I found the selections to be fairly well organized and the store reasonably easy to navigate. It was also clear to me that the owners had a good eye and knew treasure from schlock. I found prices reflected well the value that they were probably worth. Best of all, wandering/exploring through Artifacts was a lot of fun. Besides "budget" consideration, the only other limiting factor for me is that I was going home to Northern Nevada in a few days, and my suitcase was only so big. I also knew darn well that places like this truly are like a box of chocolate, as you're never really sure what you'll find either now or later. And when I return to Iowa City in Fall 2022 and enter Artifacts, I'm sure it will be a whole new "Onion" experience. Gayle would say that we don't need any more stuff, while asking where we're going to put it. I'm not sure I understand her point. :)

Totally different shopping experience…read more Maybe it has to do with their location, but we had the whole place to ourselves most of the time we were there. Upon entering we were greeted right away by Doug. I remember Doug because he has quite the personality - in a good way. He asked us what we were looking for and showed us around the whole sales floor. Slumberland and Ashley have very similar items, Slumberland also sells Ashley brand furniture. After 45 minutes or so we left without buying anything. As far as the shopping experience, I didn't feel there was any pressure to buy and appreciated that no one was looking over our shoulder. The variety was just right. Lots of nice little accent pieces that caught my attention maybe more so than the furniture did. 4/5 stars because most of the guys working were taking smoke breaks out the side door of the building. When they would come back inside they'd bring the cigarette smoke with them.
