I would urge anyone trying to find assisted living care for a loved one to visit JK House, talk to the Khader family, and see if it is a good fit for your family. Our loved one lived with fronto-temporal dementia requiring significant care and raising a host of challenging balance/falls, communication, and daily caretaking needs. The JK team worked tirelessly to come up with solutions that kept H safe and met her practical needs, while never losing sight of her as a real, present person and working just as hard to connect with her emotional and human needs. We know she felt as loved and cared for at JK as she did when we were providing care at home. From birthday celebrations to holiday traditions to everyday home-cooked family style meals, JK is committed to making a community that includes and supports all residents - and they succeed. It's a truly a remarkable place, run by honest, goodhearted, warm people who seem to have found a true family calling in service. We were lucky to find them and can't recommend them highly enough.

They are kind and attentive, dealing with irritability and other behaviors with grace and patience. The management is very open to communication from family members and every issue is addressed. Over time, with Brightview's recommendation, my mother-in-law graduated out of Brightview to independent living--a true testament to the level of progress she made and Brightview's priority to put the resident's needs first. So, Brightview was the obvious choice when, after a long hospital stay and rehab, our family faced the challenge of arranging ongoing care for my mother, Dottie. Insurance terminated our coverage for rehab 2 weeks early with 2 days notice, which was terrifying. The sales team, led by Stacey Taylor and supported by her assistant Mark, worked genuine magic and secured us a space. We are forever grateful for their care and dedication. From the start, the Brightview team made a scary transition feel manageable. After the first evaluation period, it became clear that memory care would be necessary. The staff didn't just provide care; they created a comforting routine that helped my mother feel safe and steady every day. What stood out most was the care woven through every role: - Concierge staff who welcomed us with warmth and consistency - Activity coordinators who kept life engaging and meaningful - Day-to-day experienced and long-term hands-on caregivers who treated her with patience and kindness - The wonderful chefs who prepared meals with care and attention to nutrition - The healthcare teams led by Mary Jean McCarthy and Irene George, whose expertise and compassion were pivotal to her improvement - Above all, Kimkitta Cariah-Butler consistently demonstrated professionalism and warmth, making us feel safe and at home every step of the way. We are deeply grateful to everyone who touched my mother's life at Brightview Fallsgrove. Their teamwork and heart made a difficult time not only bearable but significantly better for her--and for us. We would wholeheartedly recommend Brightview to anyone needing quality care for a loved one. If you're evaluating options, Brightview Fallsgrove is a standout choice. Thank you to the entire Brightview Fallsgrove community for the care, patience, and unwavering support.

There are tons of different buildings, and it seems to lend itself to various different types of active adult, assisted living, and other retirement living solutions. * The grounds are also pretty well kept. We visited in the winter primarily, so I cannot say how it looks in the spring, but it was quite scenic even then. * The meals looked to be of decent quality, though we did not partake in them ourselves. Ma didn't seem to complain about them either. * The amenities were ample, I think. Each room had a TV, though her room was shared with another resident. It was difficult to get a feel for normal daily life there. * The security was pretty tight I noticed, too, at least for motor vehicle traffic. Also, the building had a watch-person manning the front desk. The lobby included an apiary, which was inviting and cheerful. This is where my praise stops, however. I cannot say I had any positive experiences with any of the staff, outside of the front desk person. The folks at the gatehouse were usually pretty curt, but the nurses and orderlies were downright appalling. Only one I met had any kind of friendly bedside manner. The rest seemed annoyed to be there. I would not personally recommend this facility, but you should really talk to the residents to get a better perspective from life on the inside. For me, as a visitor, I was unimpressed where it mattered most: patient care and experience.

Skilled Nursing Facility: My mother was an inpatient at…read moreAsbury Methodist Village Skilled Nursing Facility from the end of Dec. 2022 until April 2023 for physical rehabilitation. She was a stroke victim and was admitted to Asbury with C-Diff which she acquired during her stay at the hospital. Aftertreatment, the C-Diff cleared, and she was able to participate in light physical therapy. Unfortunately, the C-Diff returned, and my mother was given another round of antibiotics, but she did not improve. By this time, she was receiving light physical therapy in her room; however, her health continued to deteriorate until she could no longer participate in physical therapy. The therapists and nurses frequently cited my mother's age (93) as a major factor in her continued decline. One evening, the sister of a patient passed by our room and asked to pray over my mother. She was an RN and told my brother and me to take her to an infectious disease doctor as my mother's situation was dire. This was just two days after we met with the doctor at Asbury who offered no solution to our mother's deteriorating medical status and could not explain why the antibiotics were not working. The social workers wanted us to move her into the nursing home as part of the facility, ignoring the C-Diff as a barrier to physical therapy. Following this new information, we decided to take our mother to an infectious disease doctor outside and independent of Asbury; however, we were required to utilize special medical transportation contracted with Asbury at our expense. The infectious disease doctor prescribed vancomycin, which is imperative to overcome C-Diff. In about 10 days, my mother recovered, but the damage was already done as the duration of the C-Diff in her system took its toll. From what I observed, the rehabilitation room is modern and contains several pieces of modern equipment. Asbury is a good place if you are young or middle aged and need to recover from a medical condition or accident which caused physical impairment. However, if you are elderly and frail, they are neither interested nor vested in your recovery. Rather, the emphasis is to move you out or into the nursing home section. Not recommended for the elderly. As for the doctor, basic knowledge (how did he not know about vancomycin and its prescription for C-Diff) was obviously lacking in addition to his limited time at the premises, thereby creating difficulty contacting him.

Meals are not nutritious, too many carbs & too low protein, nor are they flavorful. My mother has lost weight in the three years she's been a resident because she won't eat what's served. During the COVID pandemic, Five Star has made money by not providing what residents are paying big bucks for. The socially distanced activities are poor. They should be ashamed offering hallway bingo, hallway mixers & a rolling library cart for months! And, these boring, unimaginative & unstimulating activities are provided on alternative floors. Residents go for weeks with nothing. They're also saving money by scaling back the menu & having residents preorder. Much less waste, no serving staff, etc. Attempts to improve conditions have fell on deaf ears. To add insult to injury, Five Star has declined an offer for FREE on-site COVID testing of residents provided by Montgomery County. No reason was given.

It is absolutely a fantastic place in every way: the staff (*terrific*, numerous, always available, extremely patient & accommodating), the food (really delicious & varied), the programs (*300* activities per month), the interior (gorgeous & soothing), the physical setting (lovely & wooded, yet very convenient) and the general overall ambiance. The rental cost is undeniably very pricey in order to pay for all of the aforementioned, but we're very relieved that my mother can manage to afford such a pleasant situation at this stage of life.
