Over time, with Brightview's recommendation, my mother-in-law graduated out of Brightview to independent living--a true testament to the level of progress she made and Brightview's priority to put the resident's needs first. So, Brightview was the obvious choice when, after a long hospital stay and rehab, our family faced the challenge of arranging ongoing care for my mother, Dottie. Insurance terminated our coverage for rehab 2 weeks early with 2 days notice, which was terrifying. The sales team, led by Stacey Taylor and supported by her assistant Mark, worked genuine magic and secured us a space. We are forever grateful for their care and dedication. From the start, the Brightview team made a scary transition feel manageable. After the first evaluation period, it became clear that memory care would be necessary. The staff didn't just provide care; they created a comforting routine that helped my mother feel safe and steady every day. What stood out most was the care woven through every role: - Concierge staff who welcomed us with warmth and consistency - Activity coordinators who kept life engaging and meaningful - Day-to-day experienced and long-term hands-on caregivers who treated her with patience and kindness - The wonderful chefs who prepared meals with care and attention to nutrition - The healthcare teams led by Mary Jean McCarthy and Irene George, whose expertise and compassion were pivotal to her improvement - Above all, Kimkitta Cariah-Butler consistently demonstrated professionalism and warmth, making us feel safe and at home every step of the way. We are deeply grateful to everyone who touched my mother's life at Brightview Fallsgrove. Their teamwork and heart made a difficult time not only bearable but significantly better for her--and for us. We would wholeheartedly recommend Brightview to anyone needing quality care for a loved one. If you're evaluating options, Brightview Fallsgrove is a standout choice. Thank you to the entire Brightview Fallsgrove community for the care, patience, and unwavering support.

A Cautionary Tale (2019-2021)…read more Let me say this loud for the people in the back: If you are a young, beautiful, ambitious woman of color, DO NOT WORK HERE. This place is a mental and emotional war zone, a breeding ground for bitterness and toxicity. I endured this nightmare from 2019 to 2021, and after reading those 1-2 star reviews on Yelp, I knew I wasn't crazy--they are 1000% VALID. Working here felt like being thrown into a lion's den of miserable, insecure, and downright mean-spirited nurses--women in their 30s, 40s, even 60s--who saw me as nothing more than a threat just for being pretty & existing. Their cattiness, their bullying, their passive-aggressive smirks and eye rolls--it was like high school all over again, only worse because these were grown women who should've known better. Let's talk about the predatory behavior from the janitor staff. AS I SAID, if you are young and pretty, they will literally go out of their way to be seen by you. One had the audacity to block the elevator doors from closing just to flirt in my face when I was clearly trying to get to work. Another time--AFTER MY FIRST DAY OF TRAINING--I was waiting for my Uber just minding my business, eating my food from Silver Diner. I throw my trash away, and this random janitor pops up asking, "Do you have any more?" as if I was supposed to flirt back or engage. I ignored him, began to walk to try to meet my Uber, and that apparently bruised his ego. He walked to his truck, repeating distinctly out of my earshot "It's just a simple question" like I owed him a damn response. DISGUSTING. And if that wasn't enough, the so-called "team" of nurses took every chance to belittle and scold me over the smallest things. I couldn't breathe without being corrected in that cold, condescending tone. And the moment that broke me? A 4 East floor nurse got hostile over me saying "my bad." That was the final straw in a long list of being treated like a child, not a professional. Worst of all, the residents--our elders--deserved better. The care? Subpar. The attention? Rushed. The dignity they deserved? Often dismissed. Charles E. Smith Life Communities is a disgraceful, soul-draining environment. And to any young woman considering applying, especially if you are Black, brown, or just happen to be easy on the eyes--RUN.

How this facility received a 5-star rating from US News is beyond me! You walk into a very bright,…read moreupdated, and modern foyer with floor-to-ceiling windows, a fireplace, and, depending on which receptionist is working, a very friendly and welcoming staff member... and then... you turn the corner and it's the complete opposite! The rest of the building is old and in desperate need of a remodel. On my first visit, I hadn't even been to my mother's room and I was cringing. My 86 yr old mother came to this facility from the hospital, and she spent 5 1/2 wks here. Her first night she was placed in a room with another elderly woman who screamed all night. Needless to say, my recovering mother did not sleep that night. My mother had a contagious illness (hence why we landed here because none of the other facilities the hospital contacted would take her). The next day, my mother was moved to a private room in the basement (or as they call it, floor 1). There is a hall of patient rooms and a socializing/dining area with old flooring, old window treatments, and mismatched furniture, along with the kitchen and other working depts. It was very loud during the day. This level reminded me of the mental wards you would see in old TV shows/movies: old, dingy, isolated, dirty, beds sitting in the halls and without the worker's noise, if you yelled it would probably echo. The drop-down ceiling in my mother's room was stained from leaks, the tattered parquet floor was filthy, there was a pill, syringe caps, and trash on the floor when they moved her in and it was still there 2 days later. The furniture was old and beat up. The curtains probably hadn't been cleaned in 10+ yrs. The room's vibe was they went to the dumpster and pulled out whatever furniture they could find to make a room for her. The bathroom was just as old. I ran right out to get shower shoes; it didn't matter, however, because she only received 2 baths the entire 5 1/2 wks as a patient, and that was only after begging for them. The aid told her on many occasions, "I just gave you one," but I know that wasn't true by the way my mother's hair looked. I visited daily or every other day. I gave her a bath one afternoon because she looked so bad. Almost all of the patients have unwashed hair and look dirty. It's so obvious there is no patient care, and everyone is left to fend for themselves; the majority of the patients are elderly, and by the way they looked, I would say they're not able to care for themselves. I had to wash my mother's laundry until the last week. No one ever came to ask if she wanted/needed her laundry washed. The nursing staff is sparse, and they didn't engage with the patients. My guess is because of the language barrier. I'm not sure any of them truly understood or could speak English. It was very hard to find out what was going on with my mother. The PT/OT staff was very friendly but every single time I walked by the therapy room, which was at all normal daytime hours, the staff were on their computers, and the 2 patients were on a stationary bike. If there was a patient in the therapy room, there was always just 1 or 2. The bike was my mother's "therapy" also. My mother lost 15lbs in the 5 1/2 wks she was there. The food was awful! It smelled so bad, and the presentation of frozen fish sticks or thin slices of tilapia, canned vegetables, and a Dole fruit cup, which was provided several times a week, was a disgrace. There were no fresh vegetables, fruit, or "home-cooked" meals. I ended up bringing food in so my mother would eat. No one ever asked my mother why she didn't eat her meals and no one ever noticed she was losing weight. She said she was never weighed. I spoke with the food service manager and told him what she liked and disliked, but it went nowhere; he probably didn't understand me. Mom received 1 cup of water a day with no ice, and you wonder why she got dehydrated. If she rang the bell for more, someone might come an hour later. This facility does not care about its patients! I left many messages with the social workers but no one ever called me back. I had no idea what was going on with my mother and I am her POA since she isn't 100% here. Luckily, the last week I was able to reach someone in the front office after asking to go over the social worker's head, and she jumped on the task and I was able to get information about mom's release. My mother came home so frail and now we're having to deal with it. I thought the purpose of rehab after a hospital visit was to gain strength and mobility, but I was very wrong! I can not recommend this facility. We will not return. For those who don't have another option, good luck!
