The Marion County Sheriff's Department and the facility they run at 40 S. Alabama are some of the…read moremost gross violators of human and civil rights in this state, possibly the nation. There have been several death investigations over the years attributed to suicide. Reports of physical abuse rarely get noticed. The mental health cell blocks are where I experienced the most inhumane treatment. Deputies and mental health staff can place a defendant on suicide watch whenever they feel he or she is a threat to themselves or others. This authority is often abused by the staff and defendants are placed on suicide watch frequently without just cause. The housing units used to hold those on suicide watch are the nastiest areas, with serious health-code violations. Defendants are placed in cells naked with a mat, special blanket, and smock to wear if they have to leave their cell. Feces, from who knows how many different defendants over however long period of time, is clearly visible on most of the surfaces in the majority of cells. Defendants are rarely given the opportunity to shower and when they do, they find the showers covered in the same fecal matter as described in the cells. Defendants are under 24 hour surveillance by a camera sitting on the second row of bars directly in front of cells. Deputies are also suppose to make rounds verifying the physical safety and well-being of defendants. Since the majority of those placed on suicide watch have documented mental health issues, the environment is loud and agitating. It is almost impossible to sleep with the constant yelling, banging, and shaking of the bars. If you did not have serious mental health issues before going to suicide watch, you most certainly did after a few days in this environment. Deputies often physically abuse defendants and have the authority to take away the mat, blanket, and smock. I was left in my cell with nothing but my naked body and a steel bed-frame for several days at a time. This only further caused my mental health state to deteriorate. There are so many more horrendous, gruesome details that I am not including in this review. I feel they deserve their proper attention in a court of law. Through it all I never once attempted to harm myself or anyone else, which was their justification for keeping me on suicide watch. I was fortunate in that regard knowing many other people who ,while being held at Marion County Jail, took their last breath.

Police showed up half an hour later and refused to wear masks after they approached me and I told them I was 72 with pre-existing conditions. They indicated that MARION CO Chief Sherriff Billy Woods told them to not wear masks with 400,000 Americans dead from COVID! This Sherriff Billy Woods does not care about the Seniors in FLORIDA! Nothing was done about the shootings in MARION Oaks OCALA AGAIN!

Goodness, have I walked the canal about 50 times now?!…read more It's such a unique experience for Indy to have some water space in the middle of the city. This 3 mile loop will take you from 11th Street down to White River State Park to access the green space and extra trails down there. The canal water itself is not super cute, where there can be litter, and the water is rather opaque. They do drain the canal every so often to keep it from getting too uncute. The sidewalks are kept nicer, though a few spots in front of apartment buildings could use some TLC. There are also a few spots where the sidewalk is not level, so take caution if that is an issue. It's mostly stair access to the canal, but I *think* I've seen an elevator around the Ohio street basin. The canal has a few businesses along it for your merriment. Notably, there is Fresco on the Canal (I have a separate review for this) which is open March-October. Eiteljorg museum cafe is open daily around the lunch hours (11-3) and can be accessed through their patio gate. Entertainment wise, there is more going on. I've done the swan boat rentals, where you can pedal around on the canal. This is quite a workout! Rental of swan boats and kayaks is near the Ohio Street basin. There is also the gondolas, where your gondolier can sing, and they've always sounded marvelous. There's also a few stations for the Pacers Bikeshare around the canal, which is free for Marion County residents. Any time the weather is right, you can find me getting my steps in!

Love the greens, bridges, arts around it. It would better with warmer weather for sure. I couldn't walk far because of the cold. But overall I love the scenery.

Located at 337 W. 11th Street in downtown Indy, this plaza recognizes recipients of Indianapolis's Mayor's Community Service Award. This is an annual recognition given to some of Indy's most community service-minded individuals. In addition to having a plaza, commemorative bricks are created for each individual recognized. The program started in 1993 and the awards banquet is held annually. As a fun fact, myself and fellow Yelp Elite Sara R. were both recognized in 2007 and our commemorative bricks are practically right next to one another (technically one brick apart!). This plaza is open to the public and is also accessible, though parking in this area is always a little bit tricky. The Mayor's Community Service Awards recognizes volunteer contributions and commitments to community service. Marion County residents can be nominated in one of several categories, including arts and humanities, business, education, health, neighborhood, sports, and more. The year I was a recipient, the banquet was held at the Indiana History Center. This is near the end of the canal area - think Buggs Temple. Despite its presence right by the canal, very few people seem to know that Community Service Plaza exists (as evidenced by the fact that it hasn't had a single Yelp review until now). I have a couple personal photos that I'll post when I get home, but a friend of mine was sharing a story about the plaza and it made me wonder if this wonderful landmark was on Yelp. If you get a chance, I definitely recommend checking it out.
