Bought new TracTive front and rear shocks for my new BMW R1250. Easy install. On first adventure trip out, rear shock sprung a leak on day 1...trip over. Contacted BeemerShop, they immediately sent shipping label, repaired shock in under two weeks and sent back. Waiting to install and test out. As far as the failure, that stuff happens. He accused me of using a fraudulent or stolen credit card because my shipping address apparently didn't match up, even though the charge is pending on my account from their company. When I asked him why he wouldn't take my card and that his accusation pissed me off, he hung up on me. When I called back, every department ignored my phone call. I just had one of the best customer experiences of my Moto life at the Beemer Shop with Ted and his staff. I was in Baja on my r1200GS when I began to nice a leak in the rear shock... I already knew the stock shocks were not ideal for the riding I was doing but it's all I had... Knowing I was going to be passing through Scotts Valley I contacted the shop to see about a new shock setup for my bike. Ted and the staff were very fast to respond, offered some great suggestions and after going back and forth through email set an appointment. I arrived at 9am sharp and was met by Jeff (service mgr) and had a great chat. Ted suggested I get the new Touratech shocks given the kind of riding I was doing... They had them shipped direct from Holland (this is the only US Shop who has a direct factory relationship) and and the assembly began... Ted was kind enough to let me snap some photos and take some video while he did the install as well but I stayed out of his way... Rear shock installed and golden. Front shock... Rut roh. Turns out it had the wrong stud in the end and was too long for the bike... And here's where Ted and the shop really get 5 stars. It's afternoon in the US and he contacts Holland (so it's like midnight there) and they actually responded right away. Stuff happens in life but how we respond to the "stuff" is what we are really made of. Both Ted and the guys in Holland made it right... DHL express of the correct stud from Holland, Ted gives me the loaner bike, and all is well. None of us wanted it this way but really appreciated Ted and how he handled the situation. Life. Happens. How we respond is what matters. (He offered me lots of options) The reason I wanted my shocks done here is because they are SHOCK SPECIALISTS and don't just "open box and bolt on" In fact, once Ted opened the box he noticed a way that he could get me more pre-load adjustment on the shocks and took the time to disassemble them, make the tweaks, and put back together before putting them on the bike. I would have never known (and neither would most other shops) and this is another reason for the 5 star rating. These guys are pros. Period. If I lived in this area I would not take my bike ANYWHERE else for ANY service. If you need shocks for your bike HAVE THESE GUYS DO IT!! I would give them 6 stars if I could. Owning a Beemer is not cheap but the cheapest way to own it is to maintain it rather than fix it all the time. These guys specialize in the bikes and are well worth the ride. They are honest, polite, and fair. I went in for an oil change and I ended up spending more money, time away from the bike, and getting more done on it than expected. I couldn't be more pleased. She rides like a dream and feels brand new. I feel so much safer on a bike that is taken care of and performs well. There is a much more pleasant environment and friendlier feel here than the stealership. I am glad I found this place and Josh at the front desk. I'm surprised I've not reviewed the Beemer Shop before. Ted Porter is a national BMW motorsports star in an ownership demographic of the most demanding, fickle, self-adoring and cheap-ass motorists on the planet. That he has commanded their collective respect and commerce alone speaks volumes. Beyond that, there are a few unique elements of Ted's service that set him apart from the dealers and the other independents: 1) He's the official distributor of GS911, the aftermarket scan tool for BMW motorbikes that allow Joe Rider access to a fair little slice of technical, electronic vehicle control data and output commands for low, LOW buy-in cost 2) He's an official distributor of the elite motorbike suspension brand Wilburs, and will go beyond the BMW circles to sell, install, set up and service these shocks on other brands, like my own aprilia, of which there is literally no other shock option on earth. 3) Speaking of shocks, he is also the go-to expert on alternative ESA shocks for BMW that offer far more tunability than the factory units do. That's right, he's got them or can get them when the dealers and the rooty-toot interweb forumgods tell us there's no such thing available. Just wow!! In my preparations for one of my longest solo motorcycle rides on my BMW F 800 GT I did an exhaustive search for the most comprehensive Motorcycle tool kit I could find. My search lead me to the Beamer shop and the Moto Hansa ProSeries tool kit. Not cheap At $225 bucks but clearly one of the nicest and functional motorcycle tool kits I've ever seen. The only problem was this wasn't coming from Amazon with two day free delivery it was being shipped by the Beamer shop and I needed it by the end of the week. One quick call to the Beamer shop, they identified my order and it shipped out within minutes and I'm not kidding you folks, I got it the next day before noon. No I've never been to their shop but as the owner of 3 BMW's you better damn well believe I will be going there and giving them as much of my business as possible. Ted did a very thorough job of screening my typical load and riding style, in order to match me with the appropriate springs. 2. The Service Adviser, Stephen, is very professional, friendly, well mannered, pleasant, easy to work with and honest. He coordinated my in person installation, and provided me regular updates, which I appreciated. 3. I spoke with Jeff, a suspension specialist, and found him to very friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. He has a lot of wisdom, and it comes out even in casual conversations. 4. I also met with Jeff the Service Tech, and this guy is also very professional, experienced, honest, and has a great attitude. -His assessment of my bike was thorough, and I liked that he left good notes on the service order. 5. The presentation of their lobby, and the back work area (which I peeked at), are very clean and professional. All the staff were wearing uniforms, and everyone was friendly to me. What a difference! I ride an 2015 R1200RT and I'm 5'5". So the height was a challenge especially for uneven ground. Previously, I had my bike's suspension (shocks & springs) "adjusted" by a suspension speciality shop. It was a disaster! Suffice to say, it was dangerous. I'll spare the details. We discovered Ted Porter's Beemer Shop at the BMW Rally. Ted was very patient with my many calls and questions. He's a great teacher with clear explanations which gave me the confidence to try again with lowering the bike. WOW!!!! the new suspension changed everything... I love my bike again. Suspension is solid, allows for great control and all the electronics (ESA) work as they should. Well about 5 months ago I was introduced to the BMW world by obtaining my beloved 2006 R1200RT. I got a great deal on a used one that happened to have a couple of small problems. The main issue is that my front brake was constantly dragging, though the bike was still rideable. The other was that the bike was a little too high for me to manage. After some research I came upon Ted's Beemershop and called them and ended up having a nice conversation with Ted, who appeared to be a BMW enthusiast and was very willing to discuss potential issues and give advice. So I signed right up and scheduled an appointment to have Ted look at my front brakes and give the brake system a bleed (which he said would be required as part of the brake assessment). I also scheduled a valve check/adjustment as the bike was due for this as well. I was told this would take about 4 hours in total at the time. Here begins what seems like a bit of a horror story. I show up promptly at 9:30am with my good friend and check in. I'm informed that Ted won't be there until way later in the afternoon and that someone would come out to take my bike around. Out comes a mechanic who did not seem particularly friendly or interested in why me and my bike were there. Assuming all would be well, me and my buddy kick back in the waiting area and watch some motorcycling videos the nice front desk woman put on for us. 5 hours pass as the guy who took my bike back works on my bike by himself. At this point, my buddy has to leave and get back to his family and I walk down the street to get some food. I come back and ask about my bike and am told that it's almost ready. Around this time, Ted shows up and I manage to make a brief contact with him in which he says he'll take a look at my brake problem. Another couple hours go by and my bike is finished. Ted tells me he's not sure why the front brake is dragging and that it will take more time to figure out. He also catches the fact that my rear ESA was not functioning properly which is why the bike was standing too tall, though there is nothing that can be done to fix it short of replacing the $1800 unit or by buying a custom suspension (which Ted happens to sell). A little disappointed at using up my whole day to not solve any problems, I conceded that at least I got my brakes flushed and valves adjusted and figure I'd just head home. About 15 minutes later while heading down highway 17 at a good pace, my engine cuts out on me and my fuel gauge drops from full to empty. Thankfully I was headed downhill and was able to coast to a safe place and call Ted's. Ted came to the rescue with his trailer and picked me up and towed my bike back to the shop, which at this point was closed and Ted had somewhere to be. My friend had to drive all the way back from San Jose to pick me up and take me home and I left without my bike. Two days later I come back and my bike is now supposedly fixed after they found the fuel lines had somehow vibrated apart from the tank (which they had removed to do the brake bleed). After investigating this and removing my own tank later, I found these lines to have a very positive locking mechanism when re-attached properly, leading me to believe the mechanic did not re-attach my fuel lines correctly. Ted apologized and told me he looked at my front brakes again as a courtesy, though still had no solutions. So off I go again, this time very disappointed at the whole experience. As I ride off, my ABS light now comes on. Turns out that in looking into my front brake again, they bled off some brake fluid , causing the ABS reservoir to run low and set off the light. Another few hours of waiting while they removed the tank again to top off the brake fluid. At this point, Ted showed a little remorse and refunded me half of what I had paid (total of $400) at that point, which at least was something. Taking Ted's advice, the next day me and my buddy set out to work on my bike and try to solve some problems. Took about an hour to finally discover there was some sort of silicon goop on the back of my brake pads that had warped the heat shield and was causing them to drag. Removed the warped heat plate and the brakes now functioned perfectly. I also stopped by San Jose BMW who for $50 and 30 minutes of my time cycled my rear ESA in the computer and got it working again (this is something Ted can't do at his shop due to BMW's software). Overall, my experience with Ted's was heartbreaking after all the good things I had heard. Ted is very knowledgeable about airheads and older BMWs, but I would never bring a newer bike to his shop. Also be aware that if you are a new customer, it will likely not be Ted who is actually working on your bike. While the other mechanics all seemed savvy, the one who worked on my bike never gave off much of that vibe and had me worried from the start. I'm sure others have had legitimate good experiences here, but I wasn't so lucky. read more

Just wanted to say a huge thanks and provide feedback after thrashing the TFX front and rear kit on my BMW R1200 GSA - awesome!!!! On road I notice the biggest improvements on rough pavement and aggressive cornering, off-road the difference is astounding. Mind blowing even. I had no idea I was bottoming out the front end so much on the stockers and taking a real beating because of it. The front end just absorbs and floats over everything I throw at it now, riding confidence level hugely improved. I know many folks are hesitant to take this pig off road and away from tarmac, but surprisingly it is totally doable, even for a small guy like me at 160lbs. The TFX suspension makes it so much more enjoyable and frankly easier, as it does all the work instead of your body taking a pounding. Options wise, 3-way adjustable a must in my book, don't let anyone that rides off-road do otherwise. I crank the high speed compression up or down all the time moving on road to off, makes all the difference. I would be compromising too much without high speed compression adjustment IMO. I find the on-road settings too soft for off-road and vice versa. I didn't think I would play much with the adjustment but wow was I wrong. For the extra bucks separate high speed compression adjustment is worth it and really makes the investment even better. Lowering the ride height 1" took getting used to, but glad I did it. Helpful on-road and off. Ego aside it's a better fit for my 5'9" frame now. Rear spring rate at 160Nm perfect with my load rating! Glad I followed your advice. Very happy Ted wish I did it sooner!! Parts by mail, service on machines, nifty gadgets, post your classified on the billboard, what else could you want from an independent moorcycle shop? Owner Ted Porter knows his stuff like and shares what wisdom he can. I walked in with a box full of engine pieces, he consulted on what could be salvaged and what was junk. When I had a smokey engine, I sent him the cylinder head. he tore it down and inspected, and check with his machinist to find a leak. Finding none, they shipped it back to me and charged me nothing. When the transmission on my '88 R100GS stopped shifting, Ted personally brought a trailer to Capitola and hauled my bike to his shop, for a very reasonable price. The BeemerShop is known far and wide as the place to go so I gave them a call about upgrading the shocks on my 2011 GSA. Ted spent about 15 minutes with me educating me on what the shocks do, how they're made, how they can help, which one is right for me, etc... After a few thousand miles of some rough off roading, I had one shock start to leak and the BeemerShop fixed it and turned it around within a week (free). About two years later I sent them back again for a re-build (standard service interval) and again got a quick turnaround and found one of them was covered under warranty. i went to see ted for an emergency fix on my r65/5 on a black friday. he was incredibly helpful, he came out of the shop, helped diagnostic the issue, provided me with wrench and screwdriver, opened the tacometer, brought the bmw manual and ultimately helped me fix the issue. without him i would have had to rent a u haul and drive back my motorcycle to san francisco. oh and when we asked him how much we owe him he refused to charge us. thanks ted, you saved the day! read more

Since I live close by, I've been coming here for a couple years for oil and other parts as an alternative to the dealership in San Jose. Since learning about how the factory shocks on my 2010 R1200RT reach the end of their service life at around 35k miles I've considered replacement alternatives quite often. However, the cost of replacement suspension made it easy to postpone. Of course, every time I went into the shop I would see a myriad of shocks and suspension components hanging on the walls and in boxes on the floor ready to be shipped to customers around the world. Literally, they ship stuff to riders everywhere around the world! It finally occurred to me that suspension actually DOES wear out and that replacing it with a high quality, bike-specifically designed setup was a necessity and not just a nice add-on. And so began the questions and research. Which brand to get, who makes a better shock, ESA or manual adjustment? After a couple months of pestering Ted and Jeff with countless questions about suspension for my bike, I finally decided that Tractive shocks with ESA conversion was what I needed. Of course, there are other options, but considering all of my research and the opinions of these two guys, I went with Tractive. I now have a few thousand miles on the Tractives. The bike truly feels much sturdier and sounds solid when riding over washboard bumps in the road. My commute has become fun again and confidence restored in the twisties of Highway 17. The Tractives have refreshed the bikes feel and handling characteristics, making it feel stable and smooth. And this because of the guys (and gal!) at the Beemershop! 'I just wanted to let you know that I was super pleased with the work on my bike provided by Patrick & Josh, and customer service provided by Berl et al. The bike runs much better, especially brakes, as a result of the service. Josh was also was extremely helpful when explaining the work performed. If I had to choose just two words to describe Ted Porter's Beemer Shop, they would have to be Trust and Competence. These folks really know their stuff and I can always count on them to do the right thing, the right way. I've been a customer of Ted's since 2003 and since then I've never taken my bike anywhere else. Over the years, I've had a lot of work done on the bike, as well as quite a few upgrades, and I've always been completely satisfied, sometimes even overjoyed, whenever I go in to pick it up. Anytime the bike's been in the shop, getting one thing done, and they find something that should be taken care of and bring it to my attention, I never hesitate to give them the go ahead. Because I have faith in their knowledge, expertise and the fact that they wouldn't say it if it didn't need it. I have a 1978 R100/7 that I've owned since new, and you just won't find a better shop to take care of the Boxer Twins like they do. These old bikes just don't HAVE all the computer systems integrated into all the different parts, so you can't hook up a diagnostic machine to tell you what's wrong with the bike. You have to have someone who knows and is familiar with the bike and how all the systems mesh together. Not only that, but they have to have the vast experience that goes with it to be able to know what the possible problems are when the bike is making that odd noise that doesn't seem to be part of it's normal sounds. The Beemer shop is that place. I recently brought my bike in with a concern about a cyclic resonance it was making at a high rate of speed. Now, this sound was VERY subtle and probably only noticeable by me, since I know my bike so well. It didn't seem like that big a deal, but I wanted to get the expert's take on it, so I stopped by the shop. I described it to Ted and he took the bike for a test run. I had my doubts he would even be able to hear it, since it only occurred during a fairly narrow speed range and you really had to concentrate to hear it. When Ted came back a little while later, he told me that he did, in fact, experience what I had described but went on to say that he wouldn't have noticed it at all unless I had gone into detail about what it was. (I DID say it was subtle!) He then informed me of all the possible reasons it was doing this, and then eliminating them one-by-one, based on other details the bike didn't have. We were finally left with the fact that sometimes it just happens that a particular set of circumstances on a particular bike will result in the noise I was experiencing. No problem to be worked out, but it made me feel 100% better knowing that Ted experienced it and knew what it was. On another occasion, about a year and a half back, I was in the process of purchasing a heated jacket liner and gloves for cold weather riding. The manufacturer wanted to know how much extra power I had in my charging system. Not knowing this answer, I called the Beemer Shop and happened to get Ted on the phone. Turns out I had no power to spare. The bike produced just enough power to run the bike, and not a whole lot more. I must say, I was pretty crestfallen at this point. Ted then informed me of other options I had regarding my charging system. I could get the heavier duty components to replace the regular ones I currently had (cheaper), or I could upgrade one step further and replace the entire system with a DuraLast, which used the latest brushless technology (more expensive, but a much more robust and long lasting system.) He also mentioned that, due to the age of the bike, I was lucky to have gone so long without any problems in the original charging system. I decided to move ahead, opted for the DuraLast and had it switched out the following week. When I picked the bike up, Ted happened to be there and let me know that I could now run my heated gear, additional lights, heated handgrips and still have a power to spare. (I've since gotten all of those extras! Hey, why not?) I'm very happy with the new system and it was terrific to have all the options spelled out to me so I could choose the one I wanted. In conclusion, I have to say that you won't find a better BMW Motorcycle shop in this area, ESPECIALLY when it comes to the old Boxer Twins. I know I'll never go anywhere else. read more

I just got my motorcycle back and had such an unpleasant experience I felt compelled to share my experience here. I brought it in for a couple of reasons: alternator light was flickering on and off, the turn signals were not working properly and there was a leak between the bead seat and the bead on the front tire. After the repairs were done, I spoke on the phone with Ted who informed me that the electrical problems were due to a short in some connectors in the dash. When I went to pick up the bike I noticed that they had charged me for 4 hours of labor. When I told Ted I thought that seemed like an unusually long amount of time to diagnose and repair the problems I had brought the bike in for, he explained to me the difficulty of diagnosing electrical problems and how it can sometimes take a long time to find the problem. When I replied that I understood how that can be true but that I did not understand how it applied in this particular case because it seemed like a relatively simple procedure as far as electrical problems go, he became upset with me and told me that he would deduct one hour of labor and that I was not welcome in his shop anymore. When I tried to tell him that I would pay for the total amount if he did indeed take that much time to work on the bike, he rebuffed me and reiterated his position. I cannot help but think of his behavior as suspicious. If he did indeed spend that much time on my bike then he should have stood by his work and merely stated that it was a fair exchange of service for payment. But because he did not do that, I highly suspect that he did not spend anywhere near the amount of time he charged me for and that his anger was the result of the difficulty he was having trying to come up with a plausible explanation for why it would have taken someone with his expertise so long to solve such a simple problem. While it is not my intention to try to smear this guy and put him out of business, I feel like I got taken advantage of and my hope in writing this review is that he will think twice before deciding how much to charge in order to avoid any possibility of being viewed as predatory as he does in my particular case. My fear is that he will be more careful when talking to customers so as to not give the impression that the problem can be so easily fixed. My recommendation, should you decide to work with this business, is to pay close attention to the estimate you sign to authorize work on your motorcycle and the actual amount that ends up on the final balance due. read more

If you own a BMW, and you live anywhere near Scott's Valley, then you need to know about the Beemer Shop. I've got a 2015 BMW GS Adventure, and was experiencing some handling problems where the front would "chatter" through turns, and it was impossible to have confidence in the bike. Ted Porter (The Owner) is one of the US's leading experts on Motorcycle suspension, and he has relationships with all of the major manufacturers. I spoke to Ted and he knew immediately what the problem was, and he recommended that we install the Touratech rear shock, with a much heavier spring. I was in a rush to get it installed, so Ted offered to have the work done at his shop, as soon as the shock arrived from Germany. (custom ordered, with special spring rates for a larger rider). The installation was relatively quick, and I've had a chance to test the bike out on the windy roads of Pescadero and LaHonda. As far as I'm concerned, it's like riding a new bike. The handling is much improved, and as I ride over bumps or non-compliant pavement the bike seems to simply gobble it up, never tossing me or letting me feel a negative response to the pavement at all. I highly recommend taking your bike to the Beemer shop for parts, and service, but for sure you should bring it to him for all of your suspension issues. read more

I cannot say enough good things about Ted and his shop. I purchased a pair of shocks for my old airhead two years ago and got great customer service. Ted took time to learn about my bike, my riding style, the type of riding I planed to to, etc to make sure I ended up with the best shocks and springs for my specific bike. It took mer a while to get the bike in question on the road, and by the time I was able to actually put some miles on it two years had passed since I'd originally purchased the shocks. After some riding time, the shocks just seemed too stiff. The bike is pretty far from stock, so I cant blame Ted that the initial set-up was a little off. I got in touch with Ted and he gave me some advice on adjusting them to try to find some more compliance. I still felt they were a little stiff after making a few tweaks, so Ted told me to send him the shocks and he would put some softer springs on them. I was fully expecting to pay for new springs, since Ted really shouldnt be on the hook for my personal preferences about my bike, but he took the old springs off and put new ones on free of charge! Keep in mind these are two-year old, used shocks that had already been used on the road! No charge on the return shipping, and prompt response and turnaround time. To me, that's pretty unbelievable customer service. It would have been easy to ignore my request or to charge me for the new springs and their installation, but Ted wanted to make sure I was satisfied with the products and service he sold, and stood behind his work. That kind of personal responsibility and customer service just doesnt seem to happen all that much anymore, and Im extremely impressed and satisfied with Ted and the Beemershop. Ted recommended and supplied the perfect solution for my stubby legs trying to straddle three successive BMWs even already having the lowest seat on them (2012-R1200RT, 2012-R1200GS, & now my 2015-R1200RT-LC). Wilbers fixed the first two and the new Tractive Shocks are the only lowered shocks that fully integrate all the computerized suspension capabilities of the 2015-RT. The Tractives were spec's at 27mm lower, but I believe it's at least full 30mm. I'm now flat-footed and you all know what confidence that brings, not to mention the safety factor on hills, in the rain, and just in general. And even the leg-over the side cases is easier. Ted and his staff at Ted's Beemer Shop know their stuff. Being flat-footed is worth every penny. Thanks. read more

What a God send. I own an older bike. It broke down 130 miles from Ted's place. I called around looking for anyone that could help me. Everyone said it would be three weeks before they could even look at the bike. One dealer suggested The Beemer Shop because he knew Ted and his rep with older bikes. It took me 6 hours to lymp my bike to the area. Finally it could go no more. I called and they sent a guy to pick me and my bike up. I was surprised to see it was the owner himself. He personally took charge of my bike. He diagnosed the problem quickly and even swaped in parts to confirm the problems. The part I needed was 2 hours away and he gave me a loaner bike to go and get the part so I could get back on the road. When I got back he had cleaned the tank and fixed an injector that apparently hadn't worked since I bought the bike. The silver lining to this whole personal ordeal is for the price I would have paid to get my bike going so I could lymp home, I HAVE A NEW RUNNING BIKE. I will never question anything he or his staff suggested. I will be traveling the 3 hours from my home and pass a half dozen other repair places to come back. read more
