We've had two nieces graduate from Vistamar and our daughter is currently a junior. We have been…read morethrilled with the experience that all three kids have had at the school. The school has an excellent academic program. The curriculum was carefully researched and designed based on best-of-breed programs from private high schools and universities across the country. Classes are rigorous and the faculty is knowledgeable and very focused on the learning environment. We've observed how our daughter has quickly become comfortable seeking out her teachers when she has questions, attending office hours, and becoming a strong self-advocate. Great skills to have for both college and life. One of the most amazing things about the school is the strong culture that Vistamar has created. While the pressure of academics is part of the experience, much of it is neutralized by the strong sense of community and support across both faculty and students. It's an environment that has been really beneficial to our daughter, because it's one that encourages kids to take risks and try new things. She's discovered areas of passion that she may never have found had she not been at Vistamar. Again, something that we want our kids to find at this age so that they can have it for the rest of their lives. The school also does an excellent job bringing students together from different backgrounds and points of view and, through the culture they've created, enable them to build relationships and work together. Group learning and group activities are a big part of the learning culture which help develop skills that will last a long time. The actual school building can be a bit surprising when you look at it from the outside. It's much more of the converted-warehouse-tech-company sort of look than the green-campus-boarding-school. But step inside and watch how the kids work and interact with the environment. It's designed in a way where students and faculty are constantly interacting and creates a comfortable environment where you will often see students lingering well into the evening.

(My other daughter attended a different high school that was the perfect fit for her.) Vistamar is a unique and special school. Its most important characteristic is their intentionality. They have carefully thought through each part of a high school and made intentional choices to build a different and excellent small high school that allows each child to bring their individuality to school every day. The intentionality comes up in both large (why they offer Spanish and Chinese in their language program and require students to pass an oral proficiency language exam in order to graduate) and small (the temperature in the building) ways. You will not find a more enthusiastic and dedicated faculty. Their math program is incredibly strong that is joyfully brought to life by amazing teachers. Their high-level Humanities curriculum requires engagement with great and challenging literature like The Odyssey. My daughter, who wants to be a doctor, has taken advantage of the robust science offerings. All of this is wrapped by two key principals: (a) small class sizes that allow the faculty to know your student and (b) the idea that "there are no spectators" in learning. Your students will be challenged and engaged. As for extracurricular activities, this small school has a number of great opportunities for students. On their sports program, you are not going to have Friday Night Lights football. But what I appreciate about their program is that students are encouraged to try new activities. They have a "no cut" policy when it comes to sports. Their program is built to inspire students to build good, long-term, healthy lifestyle habits and find opportunities to go outside their comfort zone, as well as make new friends. On college prep, the school has built a system that prepares students to be successful in college, while not making the students feel pressurized by the college application process. The school does not want to have students focus their entire high school time on getting into college. The counseling team works closely with each student to ensure that they get into the college that is the best fit for them. As someone who has worked in education for most of my career and as someone who has seen the joy in my daughter's eyes when she talks about her school, I cannot recommend this excellent and innovative high school strongly enough.

From initial contact they were very nice and accommodating to our schedule and what we are looking for. Our direct scheduler has always made her self available to us by early on giving us all of her contact information and i can reach her easily by any means and if something were to arise she calls me right away to let me know if a BT cant or us running late. Our supervisor is also amazing shes also available to us rain or shine if we have any questions or concerns about programs. She comes often to over see sessions to better accommodate his programs to him and keep him challenged. Once that my son got really sick they both were checking up on him to make sure he is okay and as a mother that really made me elated because they dont see him as just a number or another case, they saw him as a child, like a family member and that will forever stay with me. His BTs are always trying new ways to connect with him and make sessions fun and different everytime. They are always asking how he is, whats different, any new favorite thing or songs. They also help guide me so i can run his programs myself once they leave so we can continue on striving foward. I cant rave enough about our team but aside from us his parents his bigger cheerleaders are his team. They celebrate just as hard as we do when he reaches milestones that at one point seemed lightyears away. I hope this review helps a parent feel more at ease about taking their child to ABA therapy at behavior frontiers . Their progress has been nothing short of remarkable--far exceeding what we experienced with previous therapists. Mariah is our fifth speech therapist, and she's truly the most effective we've ever had. In just six weeks, she's helped our children more than any of the others, some of whom worked with them for 1-2 years at a time. I'm so grateful we found Kyra, and that she connected us with Mariah--she is an absolute gem! The entire experience has been fantastic. What I love most is how supportive and compassionate Mariah is. Her deep commitment and genuine care for our children's speech improvement is something truly rare these days. It's clear she's deeply motivated to see them progress, and she makes learning fun for them. This means the world to us. We've been so impressed that we've decided to increase their sessions from once a week to two or three times for quicker progress. Mariah also noticed my willingness to help and thoughtfully suggested compiling homework for me to work on with the kids between sessions--a wonderful extra touch. I have complete trust in her expertise and guidance. Mariah will forever be our favorite speech therapy angel. Thank you!

However, where SBCS leaves other schools in the dust is what they manage to achieve OUTSIDE the classroom. Class size allows the faculty to focus on EVERY student and their needs. No one gets lost in the crowd. That means if your child is dealing with any issues, they'll be noticed and get the attention they should get. This school is all about teaching to the whole individual. Learning to handle responsibilities, conflict, impulse control--the faculty have it under control. If you don't just want your child to grow up a competent math student, then this is where they should go to school. They'll learn how to be moral, caring, thoughtful, and self-aware people (who are also good at math or English or ...!). They've also had a new principal for two years now, Kirstin Born, who taught for twenty-five years before assuming the top position. You couldn't ask for a more savvy, sensitive, experienced person to guide the school. She bends over backwards to meet the needs and requests of her students' families. You won't complain about crickets if you approach Mrs. Born with any concerns. SBCS is great for any student, but it is a gift to students who need extra attention and personalized care in the hands of loving, experienced teachers and administrators.

Most just aren't given clear guidance on what to ask for or what their child is actually entitled to. What stands out to me about Rise is how parents are supported in really understanding what's happening and how to advocate in a way that feels realistic and manageable. Having a clear plan and next steps takes a process that can feel chaotic and makes it more actionable. Another strength working with Rise is that April has firsthand experience working within the school system, meaning she understands how things actually function behind the scenes and can guide families in a way that's well-informed and practical. If you're feeling stuck or unsure where to begin with the IEP and 504 process, Rise provides the kind of support that can help you feel more confident and less alone in navigating it.

But after years of navigating IEPs and constantly feeling like my concerns were never fully heard and being minimized, I was worn down. Over time, I started speaking up less. Even when I knew the legalities of IEP's fairly well, the constant pushback from school made me quieter, exhausted, and more willing to accept decisions. I was tired of fighting for nothing and eventually gave in. But this year, when a simple request to help my child turned into something far bigger than it ever needed to be, I finally realized I needed support. April was incredibly knowledgeable about IEPs and helped identify additional testing my child needed, what was missing from the current IEP, and what should be added moving forward. But beyond her knowledge, what mattered most to me was that she truly listened. She took the time to get to know both me and my child so we could walk into the meeting aligned and prepared as a team. You'll read plenty of reviews about her expertise, which are true. But for me, the most valuable part was having someone who genuinely heard and believed me. April took the time to listen because she knew where I was coming from and genuinely cared. Just having her next to me during our meetings made me trust my own voice again as well. Because she was more than just an advocate, April felt like a true teammate, and that made all the difference.
