He knows exactly the right words to say and how to reach teenagers and they love him wholeheartedly. Without this program, I don't know if we would have had as soft a landing for our next step of the journey. I will warn you it is not easy. From in patient to outpatient was very disruptive and challenging - A battle which was made easier by inpatient. It is an intervention and a long term commitment. They will let you Donate crayons for patients to color but you won't get them back and patients only get 1 crayon at a time. They combine acute care patients that are violent with non acute patients which shortened our care for our child due to risk factors of these acute patients. Food is not edible and they only provide rice krispy treats, chewy granola bars, Oreos, string cheese, baked chips, bananas, apples and oranges but no healthy protein rich snacks. That doesn't seem like healthy options for patients. They kept my child's medicated shampoo and did not return it at checkout. We had hoped the other reviews would be false but unfortunately it was not a good experience EXCEPT Dr. A prescribed one thing that helped and we appreciate him! Understaffed over Memorial Day weekend and child's release time was delayed by 6 hours. Drum circle lady did not bring drums and sat patients in a circle to do chair dances. Group therapy was not therapy but patients sitting there. Janitor would empty trash cans but never swept floors so hair and dust balls were never cleaned up after a 4 day stay. The front entrance of the facility got completely flooded outside and there is not good drainage for heavy rain. Ranesha was funny at check in. Staff scare patients by standing over them at night to make sure they are breathing. My child woke up terrified by a staff person looming over her face in the middle of the night. There had to be a better way to monitor this. If that isn't triggering I don't know what is!?!?!?!! I asked to speak with a therapist or someone in charge and was told to wait. I sat in the lobby for over an hour, only to find out that staff had left while knowing I was there waiting. That level of avoidance is both unprofessional and concerning. During this process, I also spoke with another parent whose child experienced similar "treatment"--which appeared to consist largely of children sitting in a room for hours with little meaningful engagement. That is not acceptable for a facility entrusted with overnight mental health care for minors. I found out about the program and had a hard time grasping the concept of allowing my daughter to go away to this place for a minimum of 6 weeks. That would mean I'd have to face the reality of failing her. I could not fix my baby. I could not help my baby and turn things around for her. Neither myself, her dad or my daughter wanted to believe that. It was devastating to us all. She did not want to go. This made me again feel like a horrible parent. But I knew at the point we were at there was not much else for us to do but send her for treatment. By the time we arrived at the center, my daughter was not talking to me. She cried, I cried and I saw my 15 year old daughter who tried to bury her emotions ask me for a hug. I saw her 3 year old self reaching for her momma (Ok, I'm in full out tears right now). And that was in some sense confirmation that she will be alright. She ended up falling in love with the staff and they appeared to fall in love with her. While there she completed all sorts of therapy and we participated in family therapy. Found so much out about our daughter that we had no idea of. Our relationship has grown leaps and bounds. She is now on the other side of her eating disorder. And I have The Center for Discover to thank. I don't know what we would have done with out this program. I could go on and on. But IF you are remotely close to doubtful (I can relate) but in the words of Nike...JUST DO IT! You will not regret it!
