I live in San Pedro and I have passed by this shop several times. The window dressings always depict a high quality costume shop, with a lot of period costumes and they're open all year, not just for halloween. I walked in and was immediately greeted by the owner, Hania. She was very friendly and helpful and I took my time looking around the store at possible costume options. I had originally ordered a costume from Amazon, but they screwed up royally and I found myself having to find an alternative on the day of the event! I walked in and was immediately greeted by her. She offered suggestions on what I might like and showed me where everything was. I literally spent about an hour in there, trying to put different things together. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, as I had already spent enough on my other costume that was lost in transit somewhere. I ultimately chose to create a pirate costume, which Hania helped me piece together. All in all, it was a great experience. The customer service was seriously on point and it made me sad that I didn't have another event to go to, because I would definitely go to this store, again. It's a small shop, but it is full of quality costumes and not cheaply made, by any means. Many of them were absolutely gorgeous! You could be anything from Marie Antoinette and Queen Elizabeth to a floozy in a saloon! The choices for men are equally as exceptional! She also has all kinds of crowns, hats, masks, and props like guns from the old swashbuckling days. Pricing can be hefty on some costumes, but it depends on what you choose. The cheapest was $20 and others were $200 and up, but understand that the quality for those expensive ones are top notch! Definitely worth a trip! read more

Here's the ultimate in costume shops, just in time for Halloween. No surprise to me that I'm the 3rd person to award 5 stars to this smallish but incredible store, complete with chandeliers. I should have taken photos inside the place as opposed to merely through the window, because the scene was impressive. I best liked the royal court garb, 16th Century especially, heavy and rich and authentic, right down to the shoes. Ann Boleyn was in the window, looking stunning, see photo. She was still wearing her head, in addition to a magnificent outfit. Hania, the owner of this costume shop, is wonderful, as stated in previous reviews. So friendly. When I first walked in I inquired about a Joan of Arc costume and she asked if I wanted the dress or the armor. If I want the dress, complete with headpiece, I can rent it for $50 bucks for 24 hours. These beautiful costumes are used for productions & plays and are for rent or for sale. The shop will be open Sundays until Halloween. We were on the prowl to find a VERY particular type of hat and guess who had it? That's right! Behind the Scenes Costumes did. Yay! The humble and helpful owner brings even more excellence to this snazzy little spot. Most of the outfits are very reasonably priced, and simply for that fact and the quality of course you are definite to return! The very old costumes which are both authentic and good quality are in the thousands price range but you wouldn't buy one of these pieces to play around in anyway. It's serious business here! The store itself was nice the costume variety is nice compared to anything I've seen but it's definitely not kid friendly at all whatsoever my kids didn't touch one thing but lady there made them feel so uncomfortable! I came in one evening around 6pm after hiking, the week before Halloween looking for a mask for the Yelp masquerade party. And yes, I found this shop through Yelp. Luckily, I called first to see if they were still open, since it was near Halloween, hoping they had extended hours. It's a small but tidy shop with beautiful masks & baroque type costumes (available for rental), in addition to the usual Halloween stuff. So, there's costumes available to buy or rent. Too bad I didn't know this place existed before I got my costume for the year. The staff was pleasant and friendly; I think one of them was the owner. I couldn't decide which mask to get out of the three that I tried, so I got their opinions! You can park on the street or a parking garage for the building, which is entered on 7th between Centre and Palos Verdes. The 6th Street pedestrian exit is just a couple doors down from the shop. You won't find cheapy costumes here. Very high quality stuff. Brought the BF here to search for our costumes (he's a bit of a costume snob, "it's gotta look authentic"). We came in with a glimmer of an idea of what we wanted and the ladies helped us out. They didn't seem irritated by indecisiveness or put off by us turning down a few of their ideas. All in all EXCELLENT customer service. I will definitely be returning. I'd love to see the variety of costumes they offer. This is my third visit and I found another costume last minute. 2 for 3 and one of the times I found something, but changed my mind about going to the event. So really, 3 for 3. I'm in San Pedro all the time, and now have another reason to find cool costume parties (hint, hint :-) First of all, the selection they have is beautiful. The quality is high for even the "out of the bag" costumes. That being said, your always going to pay a little more for quality - so if your looking for a bargain, check out a few of my thrift shop recommendations. If your cool spending $60-$75 minimum for a party ready look, stop here. The girls working here today were so helpful. I only went in for a few accessories, and they were able to suggest a few items to make my costume more unique. While I browsed their racks, I regretted the fact that I already found this years costume, because they had so many great choices for both sale and rent. Okay so I'm going to a last minute NYE masquerade party, so of course I'm scrambling to find a cool mask, other than the $.99 masks they have at Party City. I must admit, I was hesitant to drive all the way to San Pedro for a couple of Venetian masks, but I sure am glad I did! The owner (didn't catch her name) was genuinely polite and friendly. She really wanted to help. I actually called before driving down there and she was very nice over the phone as well. She showed me several options based on my price range ($20-$30). They also have some AMAZING masks, which run up to $300.00 because they are genuine masks brought over from Venice Italy. She also made recommendations based on the dress I will be wearing and suggested I embellish my $20.00 pick with a few rhinestones from Michael's. How awesome is that?? I waited for my friend to call me back after sending her pic's of a few masks (the owner was totally cool about me sending pics, even though many establishments forbid it). I had a very pleasant conversation with her for about 20 minutes and she sent me on my way, with two carefully packed masks for tomorrow night. yea! I love this costume shop, it has something for everyone. However, the prices can be high for most... Well if you're dressing for the best, you gotta pay for it. A lot of the items she has in the shop are very colorful and intriguing. They don't look fake, they actually look like they were actually from the era of time they were labled as. I've known the owner for a while, she's actually a very nice woman. The only reason I didn't rate this 5 stars is because there is only one small dressing room- or a dressing box more or less. I was so excited to get my dress here until it fell apart before I left for my event. The bottom fridge has unraveled and about twenty pieces missing. I went back to the store to try and exchange my dress or get some money back for repairs and she refused. Stating. All sales are final. To me the dress was damaged. She should offer me something. A coworker told me about this store and I was so excited to find that they had a hard to find costume that I was looking for. However, upon calling the shop and asking a couple of questions, I found that the customer service there was horrendous! I called and asked if they had the costume I was looking for and the woman immediately said that they don't hold costumes. I said that I wasn't asking her to hold it, I just wanted to see if they had it in stock. She asked me what size? I told her I was looking for a LARGE. She said the size is called Medium/Large. I thanked her for clearing up the size and asked what the price is. She then apologized and said that she doesn't give prices over the phone. HOW IN THE WORLD DOES THIS PERSON EXPECT BUSINESS WHEN THEY'RE NOT WILLING TO HELP POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS?!!! Especially with the how the current economy is. I'm so disappointed that this place lacked customer service skills. I would have totally bought my costume there. Just rented a costume here for my daughter to use for an early American living history day at school. I was dreading having to go all the way to Palos Verdes to that school costume closet. This was way easier, cheaper, plus the owner was super helpful and the costumes were nice and clean!!! Unlike at PV School...where they were kinda grungy. Plus regular hours for easy returning. Plus the owner had a whole rack of costumes ready and waiting for this project. So many pluses! Plus she's right across the street from Hoja's. Go get your costume then go get some tea.
