Great place to bring your dogs. People are always friendly and the park is kept quite clean.

Visiting from out of state and needed a place for my 2 beagle babies to run free! This is a nice park... lots of shade, met some nice people, one racist (no joke she was making comments about blacks and their dogs and I set her straight), several quiet readers and after 4 visits no problems. A big section is sand thus on dry days it can be very dusty and on wet days there are puddles (if you have puddle mud lovin' dogs). Dress accordingly. Most people are very conscientious and clean up after their dogs and I found the grassy areas to be nice and clean. One problem is smoking - they even took the effort to put a "smoking shelter" area in the park yet people smoke freely there each time I visited. I guess they aren't aware that most people can smell that stank from a mile away. Stop being THAT jerk, k?? Be better. Being a person with health problems, it's bothersome and I don't put my fur babies around smokers either. They also have some huge holes to fill from dogs digging. My mom is visually impaired and almost fell but thankfully I was lookin' out. All in all a nice park I am enjoying with the boys!

I literally couldnt ask for much more from a dog park. Behnke is a great park. It is in the municipal complex, behind the community center and next to the softball/baseball fields. I have been to the dog park twice this week, during the late morning/early afternoon time frame. Ive taken my 85 lb mutt Duff there. He had never been to a dog park before. There is plenty of parking. There is a 2 gate entry process to remove your dogs leash before letting them in the dog park. The dog park is free! And I didnt see any posted hours. The park is a large (acre?) open space. Lots of benches and a few picnic tables for human seating and a bus shelter (for the dogs that need a time out? LOL I dont really know what its for), and a retired fire hydrant for marking. There are a half dozen large trees for shade. There is grass along the perimeter. But its mostly dirt in the middle. There are two waste receptacles, complete with doggie bags. There are also poop scoop tools. There is a water fountain that is used to fill water bowls all around the park, presumably left by other dog parents. Probably a dozen bowls. Some people bring a gallon of water to refill the bowls, as well. There are tons of tennis balls, a few frisbees, some tug ropes and some other random toys. There is a donation jar for upkeep of the park. I didnt contribute money yet but both times, I've walked the perimeter and cleaned up a bit of small trash - candy wrappers- etc. But overall, the park is in great shape! And the people I've met so far have been friendly, easygoing, interesting dog parents. Some dogs are older and enjoy just sitting under the picnic table. Others are security and run along the fence line. While others romp in the middle. Any unwanted dog behavior (none of it major) has been addressed immediately. This dog park and its visitors make me feel comfortable bringing my puppies to play.

It's worth noting that this was the first public dog park to open in the Metro Detroit area. This is a small, dusty park taking up about one acre of land south of Hall Road on Groesbeck Highway. It's free and the only public dog park within a reasonable distance to myself so this is my primary dog park. That being the case, I've gotten to know the flaws and triumphs of this little bark park. Hours are from 7am until 11pm and generally draws a larger group of people and dogs after 5pm when people are home from work and looking to have their dogs run off the energy they've accumulated all day. Amenities include a single fenced park (all dogs in one area), a water fountain for dogs and people, available poop bags, waste disposal, wind shelter, benches, and plenty of butts to sniff. This park is near a baseball diamond so expect to see plenty of little leaguers around but the problem is the land around the park is built up to shrug water off the area. The dog park isn't. As such, it can become a complete bog during rainy times. Also, the grass is patchy at best and you can expect your dog to work plenty of dirt into his/her fur while here. There are plenty of regulars that frequent the park as well so you can expect to see familiar faces and dogs if you come back often. It's a great opportunity for dogs who aren't overly social to grow familiar with a few other dogs who come back every day. These folks do a great job of self-policing the "no aggressive dogs" policy but fights do break out on rare occasion. The owners are expected to remove their dog from the park at the first sign of aggression. Overall I'm happy to have a park that I can go to but would be willing to pay an annual fee if it meant more land or better landscape. Unfortunately, Orion Oaks is simply too far to drive.

Didn't know about this dog park until a month ago, better late than never! My dog Rolly loves coming here, granted he spends 1/3 of his time here playing the rest of it just sniffing around, but he leaves happy and that's all I want. There's plenty of shade and benches to just chill out after along days work. I've talked to a few people that have been going there for a while and aggressive dogs are very rarely an issue. All in all you can't ask for more especially when it's not far from the house.

Ask the Community - Behnke Memorial Dog Park

Is this park free to the public or is there a membership fee?

It's free but there are rules posted that regulars there will help enforce. So please be courteous to others and mindful of your pooch 😊

It's July 2019 , is this place still open and does there seem to be a time for smaller dogs to be there vs bigger dogs , I have 2 cockapoos. And is this a leash off park for the most part ? Thx ✌🏽

This park is still open and it is an open park. There is no set time for big or smaller dogs. If your dogs are controlled and not barking at other dogs majority of big dogs I've seen there handle them just fine. But if a person does not have a good… Read more

Review #501 October…read more31, 2024 Welcome To The Neighborhood With Macomb's Newest Outdoor Addition called- Pitchford Park ! I finally stopped in this park nearby My home to walk around the sidewalk paths, take photos to help others see so they can visit and enjoy it too. It is located on 49699 Romeo Plank. a 1/4 mile North of 22 Mile Rd. The park was created on 1.4 acres of donated land from a previous resident. It has a unique fenced in area with a membership key entrance called Pitchford Dog Park. The history story of Pitchford Park was named after a family of long time and now deceased residents that generously donated the land in 2021 to use to create a park using their last name of Joe Kay and Pamela Pitchford. Their parents were Bill and Joyce along with brother Todd who loved nature and the community of Macomb Township. Since I drive a few times a week on Romeo Plank Road, it was interesting to watch the reconstruction of the land to create now a community park. There are plenty of parking spots throughout the different areas of activities too. My photos attached show the entrance, trees, shrubs, flowers, tennis and pickleball courts, playscape areas, picnic tables and restrooms too. The newest attraction is a Dog Park for residents and non-residents with a fee and key to enter to use the areas for dogs to run and play with each other or their owners. Coming soon will be a Butterfly Exhibit in the Spring of 2025. For more information and registration to the Pitchford Park call: (586) 992-2900 and ask for director Sal DiCaro x 2800. Dog Park Fee: Residents $40.00 Non-Residents $56.00 Seniors $25.00 Non-Resident Seniors $35.00 Your Dog must have a license first to apply. Rules of the Dog Park are on the sign posted at entrance, and my photo is attached with the information. Hours of the park are Sunday through Saturday Dusk to Dawn. I'm looking forward again to cruise up here to enjoy my walks for exercise plus watch for the areas of nature to enjoy. Sincerely, Karen N. :-) Resident of Macomb Township

I was on a limited time crunch today, so I stuck mostly to the main, paved trails (happily many sections of this path still ran through the woods); but there are hiking and/or biking trails branching off in many directions all throughout the property. Make sure to watch the trail signs, as some are for bikers only. River Bends is also a dog friendly park, note that they must remain on a maximum of a 6ft leash at all times. While I visited today with only my pupperoni, River Bends park is great for kids of all ages. There are a multitude of play areas for children, great to help wear out their energy. There is also a disc golf course that winds throughout the park, supplying players with beautiful nature views. You could also enjoy a BBQ on one of their charcoal grills, relax at a picnic table, or pavilions if you have a large group; nature watch on a nearby bench, our even try out a game of horseshoe. The park appeared well maintained, for the most part; although a few signs could use some repair. They have restroom facilities, and port-a-pottys available for use (although I did not enter them to speak of their cleanliness). You can find trash receptacles around every bend, so there's no excuse for lazy littering, and there is a main sign available showing you all of the trails and their difficulties. You can find this sign posted off to the side of the parking lot; which itself, had plenty of available spots. Definitely a favorite park to stop and enjoy, highly recommend.

First and foremost, something IMPORTANT - if you click on, "Get directions" while in the Yelp…read moreapplication, you will be sent to the wrong place by Google. I'm assuming someone must have done the "find my location" drill originally when determining the location, and the GPS satellite was a little off that day, because if you follow the directions given on your phone, you're going to end up someplace else besides the park. Where will you end up, exactly? You will end up in the middle of Interstate 94, about half a mile away from the dog park, and you will be going around 70 mph when your GPS announces, "You have arrived at your destination". I've done it twice with the same result, in the same spot on I-94. Put in "Statler-Maloof Dog Park, St. Clair Shores" in your GPS, or, if it can't find that, put in "Brys Park, St. Clair Shores" in your GPS (the dog park is within the boundaries of the larger Brys Park), and that should get you to the right place. It's pretty close to where Harper and 8-Mile Road intersect. That housekeeping item aside, this is a great dog park. Additionally, it's open to BOTH residents and non-residents of St. Clair Shores alike. But, don't even bother going there until you complete the application process first, because you and Taffy/Killer/Spot/Duke/Coco/Diablo/Zoe/Bear, etc., won't be getting in without the electronic passkey (it's a key fob, in this instance) that you get after you get through the membership application. You can get an application at the dog park, online, or, have one mailed to you if you call up the department that handles it at City Hall. Yes, it's a pain to fill out the application, get all the dog's paperwork, and then take those things to the St. Clair Shores City Hall, where, if everything's in order, and you give them some money, they conditionally approve you as a member. It's conditional because you also must return later for an "Etiquette" class (not the dog, just you), and then, and only then, your electronic key fob is activated, and you and your canine quadruped can get through the gates, and use the park. You know something? It is totally worth it. Good people there, good dogs there, it's all so very copasetic. Definitely recommend!
