After researching several CCRCs a year and a half ago I moved from Connecticut to Birch Hill, a…read morevibrant retirement community. I experienced a warm welcome from residents and staff alike. I especially like the fact that everything is in one building - a beauty shop, housekeeping and maintenance services, a tavern, country store and physician services. Daily shuttle service for appointments and shopping is available for the day I can no longer drive. I seldom miss an opportunity to associate with other residents. It might be in the dining room where a restaurant-style meal is served daily. I am happy with the meals and menus which offer a variety of choices. Another time friends and I might join an exercise or yoga class in the newly designed fitness center. Every month there are movies and programs to choose from. A full calendar of trips are frequently scheduled to local theaters, restaurants and musical performances. Birch Hill is a pet friendly community. I was attracted to the country-like setting offering twenty-nine acres of natures finest where I can walk my dog or join a morning nature walk with friends. The community is minutes away from major shopping, local attractions, a university and community college yet surrounded by evergreens, birch trees, wildflowers and walking trails making for a tranquil setting I love. For me there is peace of mind knowing I'll be well cared for in a friendly, family like environment where residents and staff care for each other knowing what happens to one of us happens to all of us.

There came a time when there was not much to do. When the visiting Angel was here, and I was concerned that it was a waste of my time and not much used to me and, and they were very resistant in the office because they claim that I really needed to have somebody there. But they were not here and they could not see what was going on, and when I explain it to them, they did not hear what I was trying to say. They sluffred me off as an old person who was not really aware of my needs. The frosting on the cake was when they reported my case to the state office Adult Protective Services. and it resulted in an on-site visit to my house, and in my opinion, this was just harassment on their part. To stop their care of me at my house I finally had to put my foot down so to speak. It was going to mean the loss of significant income for them and that was really what was driving them not the fact that they were advocating for me, which they were trying to make me think it was the case, but not at all was the case. I would find another Agency because you'll be taking your chances with Visiting Angels Auburn.

In my personal experience, there is nothing angelic about their care, or this franchise. The low care was detrimental to the health and well-being in my experience as to be unsafe for the person being cared for. Negative stars.

I preface this by saying there are some great people working here. But they are far outweighed by…read morethe bad and by what appears to be awful management and carelessness when it comes to attending to resident needs. My relative has recently passed away during an extended stay at this facility, and I am glad that he no longer has to endure staying here. Many of the nurses are lackadaisical in their duties, and frequently do not pass information to the next nurses coming on for their shifts meaning that residents such as my relative frequently received the WRONG medication or missed doses of medications he needed. When these concerns were pointed out, nurses would lie, pass blame to other people for making decisions during meetings which they could not recall the details of, or flat out lie. Then, when my family members left for the evening, or when I visited without my parents and they weren't clear of my familial relation, they would talk about my parents behind their backs, IN FRONT OF ME, complaining about them and blaming THEM for the wrong decisions and moved the staff themselves made. Once they knew who I was, I got the same fake treatment my parents did. This culminated in experiences that put my relative through physical trauma and made his last days incredibly disrespectful and distressing. For days, they were left to sit in their own filth and in pain, as the staff would frequently forget to change his dressings or even try to lift him to where he needed to be in his room. And on the occasions where they tried and failed to move him, they blamed HIM, the patient. As if that weren't bad enough, nurses administered UNNECESSARY, extra doses of medication HE DID NOT ASK FOR, that were not approved by the family (who had medical power of attorney) which left him in a delirious state up to the end. Even the simple requests, such as asking for new sheets, tissues, or water cups were met by sarcastic remarks, condescending attitudes, and general standoffishness by a (mostly) unprofessional staff who seemed genuinely annoyed they were being asked to do the bare minimum to keep a resident comfortable. Again, there are a few good people working here and I am forever grateful for them and what they did to help. But nothing sums up our experience more than watching these few good people turn and RIP INTO THE STAFF for the condition of the patient because the people working under them are lazy, uncaring, indifferent, or all three combined. If you care AT ALL about the well-being of your loved ones, DO NOT send them to Hackett Hill.

Thanks to the great therapy and nursing care he left 1 month later able to do for himself and walk with a walker. You are a great bunch of people and deserve to be praised for all you do. I would recommend this facility to anyone who needs therapy. The staff is amazing and always have a smile and always jokes with them. Occupational therapy was so much fun. Richard baked cookies with a group of people and he told the therapist that he didn't need to bake cookies because he'll just buy them. LOL !! The nursing staff was so pleasant to him and myself. You girls deserve to be praised for all you do. Thank you all again. Richard and Loreen Hilliard
