While visiting Maine I found Balanger's as a roadside whim. I had the steak bomb sandwich and I was very pleased the size of the sandwich and the freshness of the bread. The nice folks brought the food out to me after ordering so I was able to relax at my table and browse my phone. Truly a family business We met the owner his wife and daughter, apparently the whole family works there with his son in the kitchen as well as Joe the owner. The service was perfect and the bacon blue cheese burger my is still a topic of conversation days later. Homemade buns and homemade burgers it was one of the best burgers we have ever gotten. The fried chicken sandwich was excellent they even have good tasting gluten free buns. The homemade onion rings were excellent as well as the chocolate shake. The shake was thick and very chocolatity. They were doing work on the grounds so it looks like it will have a beautiful outside seating area as well as a great play area for the kids. Wow! Excellent meal. My husband and I each had the Haddock basket. It was cooked to perfection and reasonably priced. They have crinkle cut fries which are my favorite. Many of the drive in restaurants that provide a roll with their baskets serve up dried out commercial rolls. The roll that came with our meals was fresh and delicious. They have packets of butter out with the salt and pepper packets so you can serve yourself which was nice because I prefer a couple of pats on my roll. The homemade baked goods aren't even mid. They are gross. That and the prices are exorbitant. Food is how I remember it being as a kid, ok. The ice cream selection is on point, but there are better ice cream shops around. Nothing stands out as awful (except those baked goods) but nothing stands out the other way either. Call ahead of you can, that's what the locals do! There is plenty of parking and outdoor picnic tables. There is also a restaurant if you desire. I got a lobster roll because I couldn't get enough, your options are cold dressed with mayo or warm with butter. Small in a hot dog roll or jumbo. I inhaled mine sitting outside with travel companions who have to bring their own food due to allergies and health stuff. The restaurant and takeout staff are super nice. There is a tiny carousel for small kids and also a tiny fenced in playground for small kids and toddlers. Cute place. This was a great find. We arrived 40 minutes before they closed and it was never mentioned. Emily was amazing. She eagerly described the food and reiterated the homemade specials. I hate to complain because I know it's a small business, but I work hard for my money too. I had the puny fried chicken sandwich- 2 tiny chicken nuggets inside?! We all ordered fries with our sandwiches but were charged individually instead of "basket" prices. The frappe was milky/tasteless, ridiculously expensive. I'd rather have McDonald's. I've been here more times than I can count over the past 35 years. Typically I would give them 4 stars but they're starting to get out of ratio of cost vs quality and quantity. While fried whole clams are great but its now $20 for a pint. Regardless the pint is a much better deal than the basket which is my first real issue here. One complaint people have with a basket is the amount of fries you get instead of the protein. Belanger's has cheapened it even more by placing the roll in the basket. Makes it look nice and big but as you start to dig in you see that the majority of the basket was the roll right in the middle. A few fries around it and a few clams on top, we felt cheated. Great road side spot for homemade comfort food during COVID. They have outside picnic tables. We brought our dog and they gave her a bowl of water. I used to go here almost every week, I went for the first time since it has been under new ownership and disappointed is an understatement. I got the chicken basket and I had about 4 small pieces of chicken and the rest were all French fries and a lot were left over dried up ones on the bottom. I waited 45 minutes for my order as well. I'm not sure what happened but this is not the Belanger's I used to love. I asked 3 other people and that all said the same thing. Portion sizes have decreased and prices have increased. We have gone here for years. have gotten a mixed seafood basket without haddock.the wife and I share a basket because in the past have not been able to eat everything in basket. today was first trip in couple months anyways,what a disappointment the mixed basket was. I eat shrimp and scallops and wife eats clams and we share fries.there were 2 whole clams and 2 clam strips. we never remember ever having strips in a basket, before she always got 5 or 6 clams. when I asked young man about it he said that is what is in mixed basket now. did not know about change in ownership. what a shame to raise prices and cut portions.guess we will need to find another take out that will serve up good food and good portions. too bad to start downhill so fast. read more
