Tucked away with a view of the pub, it was still loud and warm but not crowded. Our server was extremely attentive, checking in every time someone arrived and throughout the evening. Service was quicker than expected. The food and drink menu was extensive. With fare from Belgium, mussels and fries were a must for me. I went with the miso and ginger broth, super flavorful and a little spicy. Loads of mushrooms tucked in with the mussels. They were smaller than you will find in Brussels but delicious. Bread and fries to boot! The beer selection has all the European staples and something for everyone, even wine lovers like half of our group. I had a tasty brown ale, very rich and deep. Overall it was a good evening, save for the bathrooms under construction where I saw a dead cockroach in the toilet. Skip the loo if you can!

Cozy little place in Soho, London, serving Belgian food…read more The atmosphere of the restaurant was quite cool, and it really gave the impression of being somewhere in Belgium (even though I have never been to Belgium myself, haha). Our waitress was nice, but her English was quite poor, making the information and placing of orders a bit messy. Their menu was specialized around mussels, but I went for a sharing concept with my brothers between the Pork Belly, Beef Carbonara and Liege Meatballs, all of which were accompanied with potato stomp. The pork belly was okay tasting, but nothing special. The beef and meatballs however were really good! The portions were unfortunately quite small, and I felt like I left the restaurant hungrier than when I entered it. For me personally, this is always a huge dissapointment whenever going out somewhere to eat. If I were to go again, I'd rather go for the mussels. According to the others I went out with they were incredible. All in all this place gives you an authentic feeling of eating somewhere in Belgium, a decent tasting meal, and a lack of fullness for a fair price.

It was so rich and flavorful and cheesy and delicious..unlike anything I've ever tried before or since. This was on a road trip my bf and I took to Portsmouth btw, and I want to come back to the city just to go to this restaurant again! :) We also got a Croque Reuben (sandwich for me, large portion), Pork Belly (for him), Manniere Moules et Frites (mussels dish - Classic moules with garlic butter, white wine and parsley, served with toasted sourdough), Brugse Zot Sport (beer for him), Kwak (Kwak amber beer, cream, orange and fennel for me) and Orangina. The main dishes of pork belly (Pork belly slowly roasted in Lindemans Apple beer, served with Stoemp and seasonal vegetables, finished with apple beer and mustard reduction) and Reuben sandwich (Grilled sourdough sandwich with Gruyère and Cheddar, sliced pastrami, sauerkraut, gherkins, Emmental and Russian dressing) tasted great, and portions were really generous! The Good: The beer is authentically Belgian/Dutch. The nibbles too. The bar staff are friendly. The couches are comfy. The Bad: The bar is a little bit Disneyland Antwerp. The staff aren't equipped with any Dutch. The French radio piped in is very annoying after an hour or so. The Ugly: There is a God awful high-pitched whine when the beer is being poured from tap. So if you're Dutch or Vlaams and you're missing some home comforts stop in, bud don't expect this be become a home away from home.

One of those places that you have to go to at least once in your life…read more This Belgian (yes - Belgian) restaurant is run, owned and chefed by Frederic Desmette, a completely and utterly hat-stand chap. A character would typify him totally. If he likes you, then you will be allowed to stay, if not, then you will be encouraged to leave. The restaurant is almost a hobby of his and the food is extremely rich. He scours the continent for ingredients and often returns from a trip to France or Belgium with his van laden down with produce. An almost liquid cheese that his excitedly boasted was 100% pure fat, for example. The wine list is huge and well priced - it's the only place that I've ever had a red dessert wine. Expect a lot of chicory, a lot of cream and a non-stop commentary from Frederic himself. The building used to be a pub and still retains a lot of that character. It's also a little awkward to find. For a truly one-off gastronomic experience, I urge you to run the gauntlet of Frederic and give La Chouette a crack.

They are potato-y, crispy, a good size, and a nice consistency, as well as a great overall flavor. On their own, the fries/chips are super good... but what makes them even better is all of the different dipping sauces that are available to go with them. The sauce options are really unique and all of the ones I've tried were awesome! I also love that there are tons of different sauces to choose from! Also I think they switch out the sauces now and then which also makes it kind of interesting. The place is pretty small so sometimes the wait is a little while and it can get crowded, but it's totally worth it. It seems like most people order to-go, but eating there is much more fun. Plus, if you stay there to eat, you'll be able to sample/order more of the sauces rather than just one or two. I do wish that they had something other than fries, since fries alone aren't really a meal, but I guess that's one reason they are unique. I believe they have different sizes to choose from though, so depending on how big you go it could probably fill you up like a normal full meal would. Also, the staff is very nice, friendly, and helpful. Befries is kind of just an all-around great place.

The sate sauce is particularly nice - so nice that we had to have seconds. The slight downsides are that the only drinks that they have available are bottles that you can buy from a cabinet by the front door which I feel cheapens it a little. Luckily we found some stool seating by the front and were able to enjoy some beers and take in the ambiance. There's an upstairs that is accessible by a very very narrow staircase which even has handles for support, all part of the fun lol!! Beer: We tried out the Guinness (great pouring process!), peroni, and a local ale which the bartender allowed me to sample. He was very helpful and walked me through the different ciders they had in stock and even how you could add fruit syrups to sweeten the flavor. What makes this place even more memorable was the helpfulness of the young guy bartending. He helped us plan how to get to Gatwick airport extremely early the next morning and we owe him a big one!
