    Joey

I was recently passing through Oak Creek for a few days on an extended road trip, and one of my two Jack Russell's developed severe mouth pain and swelling to the point where I had to seek help. Bell Rock Vet Clinic was the closest so I called and got an appointment right away. Heather the tech was really awesome and caring, and Dr. Jarvis was equally caring and sensitive to my Joey. She quickly diagnosed what the problem was, prescribed some meds and we were on our way. Within 24 hours Joey was back to normal. What really impressed me was the phone call I received the next day from the Clinic asking how Joey was doing. They offered to call in additional meds if I needed them while on our trip. I can't praise Dr. Jarvis, Heather, and the whole staff enough, they were simply amazing and if I lived in Oak Creek, they would be my full-time vet..

It was not spiritual. It was not sacred. It was not soulful. It was not bittersweet. It was not Sedona-y. It was a traumatic ending with my cat trying to hide from the vet tech by running under the sofa and then trying to get away from the vet before I could get Leo situated underneath his blanket atop my chest for euthanasia. The event was very painful for him and he died with his claws still puncturing my t-shirt from when he tried to gain traction in order to run away from Jarvis holding a giant needle. It was clinical. It was rushed. It was cold. DO NOT EUTHANIZE YOUR LOVED ONE AT THIS CLINIC. The euthanasia room--if you can even label it that--is cramped with impractical furnishings and is very noisy. It is located at their check-out window and literally adjacent to their exit. I heard a woman talking about her dog to the receptionist with the dog on a leash, sniffing the door where Leo and I were supposed to be saying our goodbyes. Jarvis was professional and polite, but she was not kind or loving. When I took Leo to see her for our very first visit, I literally said, "We moved up here in October. It's been a very hard move for us. I am hoping it's just worms, arthritis, and depression." After her exam, she said, He's not even letting me touch it. He's got a tumor. Let's go look at it in the back. From the moment she said "tumor" in the exam room, I went into shock. I was on autopilot. I was hearing but I was not listening. I was not digesting the information. I followed her where she and her tech put Leo in the cradle. After a quick shave she used the ultrasound wand on his torso to show me the "huge" tumor in his abdomen, swollen lymph nodes, and suspicious tissue running through his intestines. Back in the exam room, she said she figured it was lymphoma, cancerous tumor, and intestinal cancer. She said it was aggressive. She said she could do 3 things: refer me to a specialist, offer palliative care, or euthanize. Given that he showed pain during the exam, I panicked. Without any counseling or guidance, I made the "wrong" decision to euthanize him so quickly. I returned later that same day having had just a 45 min break at home between commutes. I doubled panicked the next morning when I realized that I had killed my cat too soon. My relationship with Leo ended traumatically for the both of us on the heels of a sad chapter in our life together. I wanted our relationship to end on a high note, not a low one. And this could have been prevented if Jarvis had cared. Veterinarians have 2 patients: fur-parent & fur-child Had she offered any GUIDANCE or INPUT about decision making or a timetable, the outcome would indeed have been different because I would have chosen differently. I was on autopilot, in shock; Jarvis was not. Jarvis offered her medical diagnoses and had her vet tech hand me a fee schedule for potential services. Not once did Jarvis say, "I am so very sorry but I don't think it's as simple as worms, arthritis, and depression..." She never offered, "If I were in your shoes...If Leo were my baby...It's NOT a good time. You're in shock. You need to ease into this decision before you literally make a life or death decision...You need to feel 110% committed....Let's give Leo pain meds, steroids, and an I.V. before you take him home...let my vet tech give you a tour of the euthanasia room...here's a list of vets who provide home euthanasia services...call us when you feel ready...and let us know how we can help you make arrangements. I am so sorry for the situation. You're in a tough spot right now...I think you need to do what's right for the both of you at the right time, and today is not the right time. Get some counseling and talk to friends and family. Do some research online. If you're open to it, contact psychics, animal psychics, and healers in the area. We're in Sedona afterall. Are you OK to drive? Do you need a ride?" Nothing. The first I heard about The 5 Stages of Grief or a counseling service hotline was 8 days later in a handout that the pet cremation service included in the gift bag that held Leo's ashes. It never occurred to me to conduct any Rituals of Grief/Death prior to or just after the euthanasia. DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID. If I had the opportunity to do it over, I would have asked for the above: pain pill, steroid injection, I.V. Then I would have taken him home and logically and rationally thought about finances, time, Leo's behavior, and his growing medical symptoms. I would have conducted online research and reached out to friends and family. I would have contacted healers and psychics. I would have gotten a 2nd opinion and gone to the specialist. Finally, I would have done a home euthanasia so I could help Leo ease peacefully into the afterlife. If you read her comments to this post, you can see for yourself she doesn't know the difference between a "pet" and a Fur Baby. IMO she's robotic & practicing in the wrong community.

One is too many stars. We took our dog for stitches…read more We got a proposal for $3600. WHAT??? He needs bloodwork, X-rays, pathology, general anesthesia, radiology, it could have penetrated the chest wall, 4 hour hospital stay and too many other things to mention. We had to pay $219 after they did nothing except look at our dog. All that took an hour and half. This after driving over an hour. Once they gave our dog back to us, we drove 2 hours to Yavapai Animal Emergency in Prescott Valley. They examined him in about 10 minutes. Thoroughly explained what they would do. Give him a shot, clean and staple up cut and send him home. They were done 20 minutes later and we were on our way home. The cost was $680. When I told this awful place in Flagstaff that they should be ashamed of themselves, they told me "we offer the gold standard of care". What a joke. I WAS ALMOST PHYSICALLY ILL. DO NOT TAKE YOUR BELOVED FURRY FRIEND TO THIS PLACE. Two hours of driving to and from this place. $219 for absolutely NOTHING. Just for them to give us our dog back. They should return our money. And by the way, the Dr that came into the room for 1-2 minutes reeked of perfume so bad. If he had been in the room any longer, I would have had to get out my inhaler to breathe. Yuck.
