We came to Belle Grove for the Tea with Elvis. This is a beautiful house in the Northern Neck. Nice long driveway with a beautiful river view on the back porch. The rooms were setup beautifully with lovely tea services. Delicious tea sandwiches, scones and desserts. Belle Grove sells various teas and you can spend the night on the property. They have several fun events scheduled throughout the year. We definitely want to return to this historic place. read more

My twin sister and I enjoyed a night stay here this past week and it was stunning inside and out. This is our 2nd visit. We stayed here ~6 yrs ago and had always intended to return. It is the birthplace of James Madison and the family home of the Conleys, his mother's family until the original house burned down. We are in the Conley room this visit on the first floor. Very accommodating, spacious, quiet and comfortable. We had dinner in the main dining room with another couple who are also here but in the Madison room, which is where we stayed last time and on the second floor just above where we are staying now. There is a small elevator that goes up one floor. Fully Covid vaccinated individuals are welcome without masks. Dinner was excellent and Michelle the proprietor, served us beef filet with a wonderful mushroom and balsamic sauce over garlic asparagus. A side of horseradish potatoes was very tasty. Dinner is an extra. The stay comes with breakfast each morning served between 8-845am. We are here for three nights. The breakfasts are wonderful. On our first morning Michelle, the "Commander in Chief", made her special BLT which was unique and delicious. Brett, Michelle's husband was not here during most of our stay. We did catch up with Brett on our last day. Michelle & Brett lease the property from the Foundation that owns the place and they run the B&B business of leasing the house. There is coffee, water and soft drinks available on both floors of the house in side rooms set up for that purpose and space for some work needs. We are both retired. There was a bit of maintenance work going on during our stay and they were preparing for Saturday and Monday weddings. None of that detracted from our stay. The former slave quarters and kitchen outbuildings have been renovated and restored since our last visit. The caretaker cottage is updated but not occupied as Michelle lives in the main house. We took a paranormal tour with a local specialist and visited the basement and summer kitchen outbuilding, where remnants of spirits have been observed in the past. We did not encounter any but did hear two voices at one point. The tour was $25/person. There are many historical sites, wineries and breweries to sample in the immediate area. Amazing how many of our Nation's founders came from this part of Virginia. We learned that John Wilkes Booth met his demise just down the road, as did Stonewall Jackson. We always like heading over to Colonial Beach for a few hours. Michelle explained that there are ghosts in the house and on the property, 83 we are told. My wife loves that stuff but we have not seen any ourselves. Last visit we took a private tour as we were the only guests. The house is fully occupied this time with 8 guests. Value is very good. For three nights, with three breakfasts included $175/nite +. We love the history and the solicitous folks who run the place and will likely return at some point. Nancy & Mark. read more

Belle Grove Plantation is a hidden gem and I have been fortunate enough to have found it. The owner/host (Michelle), a former military, is straight to the point - trying hard to make all your wishes come true. I do not have any complaints and even if I would have it, they would be pale when compared with a rich experience I had at Belle Grove. Setting my plan in place was easy and Michelle was super accommodating to assure that I get what I want. First stop was the afternoon tea. Wonderful location at portico, gorgeous table set up and quality tea with good finger food and sweets begs to be repeated. After tea, attending a tour of the historic house is must. There is a lot of interesting information that the tour can offer. It gives you additional air of importance. Dinner has exceeded the expectations. It was held on portico balcony with the river view. Food was prepared as if in high rating Michelin restaurant. The personal care was evident in the table set up, quiet check ups and excellent food quality and presentation. The plantation owner is taking great care of the property. I have noticed the landscapers discussing how to create the best view of the river. The rooms are very specious and luckily the bathrooms are 21st century upkeep with the soaking tub. The mattress was perfect and definitely big upgrade from a standard hotel quality. The breakfast was served outside, so that was a third meal in the tow eaten with the river view. It was a hearty egg and bacon sandwich with arugula and roasted peaches, that will set you up for another great day. read more

This was our first visit for afternoon tea. What a special way to celebrate a birthday in this beautifully restored historic home. So much thought has gone into making this a wonderful experience. We were greeted upon our arrival and immediately taken to the beautifully decorated dining room where our tea service was waiting for us. All of the tea selections we had to choose from are specially blended for the plantation. The teas are also available to purchase. We followed up our afternoon tea with the tour of the home. We enjoyed our tour guide, and she answered all of our questions. Everyone who was working made a point to stop and have a friendly chat with us during our tea time. To say I was blown away with this Bed & Breakfast would be a huge understatement. The rooms are spacious and finely appointed with true antiques. This is President Madison's birthplace after all. The history was explained in a brief tour before we brought our bags in. The view of the Rappahannock is stunning like the building itself. If you like history why not stay in a piece of it. Recently my significant other told me that her reservations were cancelled by the owner/manager of Belle Grove Plantation because she was in the hospital at the time reservations were made. The owner/manager did not make any effort or attempt to rebook or reschedule her birthday reservation for another date. She didn't even listen and did not make any concerted effort in trying to make things right, she simply hung up, shame shame. This owner/manager not only displayed poor customer service, but just didn't give a crap about people. Belle Grove Plantation is very historic, and my significant really wanted enjoy history while celebrating her birthday there, but the owner/manager seems to only care about money rather than focus on satisfying her clients. I will never set foot there again, and this review will resonate among all potential clients. You get a zero for your attempt in resolving this issue. read more

Belle Grove plantation bed & breakfast is a charming b&b and is the birthplace of James Madison. We first came to attend a family wedding a couple of weeks ago and we could not believe how gorgeous the house and entire setting is! From the moment you turn onto the driveway, you feel as though you have stepped back in time. Along the entrance is a lovely tree line with farm land on one side. On the back of the house, which is technically the front of the house, is the river, which provides beautiful sunsets. The grounds also has 3 outbuildings. An icehouse, cookhouse and I believe an outdoor kitchen. These are hundreds of years old and the owners are wanting to have them refurbished. Each room within the house is eloquently decorated and adorned with gorgeous antiques. From claw foot bathtubs, amazing bed frames, fireplaces, paintings, mirrors, rugs, dressers to armoires. Amazing! The beds are extremely comfortable and the entire house is spotless. The breakfast that the owner/s, Michelle and Brett Darnell created is absolutely delicious! It was SO good. Now if they only had a wheel barrel to wheel me out because I could not stop eating. Also, they are more than willing to cater to those with dietary restrictions. And if you are a history buff, this is the place for you! Brett and Michelle have a wealth of information, not only about James Madison, his family, and those that also lived in the house after the Madison's but they have a wealth of information about the entire area. It's extremely interesting and they are very informative. Also, there are many vineyards and historical sites within the area. When you are outside walking around the grounds, you may spot a family of deer, bunnies and make sure to look up. There is also osprey's that nest in top of one of the chimneys every year. As for the wedding, it took place outside and looked over the river. It was beyond charming and I cannot wait to see the pictures! There was a large tent to host the reception. The dinner was prepared by none other than, Top Chef contestant, Joy Crump! The meal was delicious! And thank you, Joy, for preparing 2 special pescatarian plates for myself and my husband. Now, Tammy, the wedding coordinator. She kept the day as relaxing as possible and she made the whole day go off without a hitch! The handling of everything, from start to finish, was sublime. She was awesome! So, if you love history, James Madison, antiques, wanting to escape from the hustle and bustle or are looking for the perfect venue for your wedding, look no further. This place is for you! If you do not have time to stay for the weekend, they also give tours of the plantation. Again, you feel as though you have stepped back in time. All you need is a glass of lemonade while you sit in one of the outdoor rocking chairs, enjoy the beautiful surroundings and state "well, I do declare, this is simply a beautiful day". read more

My husband and I like to do fun things when we can't be with family on holidays. I had been watching Belle Grove Plantation evolve and grow on its Facebook site. My husband and I decided that Thanksgiving 2017 would be the perfect time to book. We booked in September--and were successful after finally making contact with Michelle, the owner. Several things happened in our lives after that, so I did not delve into the DETAILS. We stopped for lunch on Wednesday on the way. I called Michelle to see if there would be a refrigerator to store our leftovers. She said No and reminded us that check in was 4:00. So we went to Fredericksburg to run errands--we live about 2 hours away, so sightseeing was not in our agenda. Just rest. We arrived and were graciously greeted by Michelle. She gave us a quick tour of the beautiful home.During the tour she mentioned that we were not to roll our suitcases on the floors. We are Seniors and I had wrenched my back the previous week, so we were leery about getting our suitcases up and down the outside steps that had no handrail and carrying them to our room. After the tour, Michelle asked us what time we would like breakfast and told us the other couple chose 8:00. So we chose the same time. We love meeting new people. Michelle asked us our food concerns. I said I did not do butter, sauces made with butter/whit sauces. My husband and I said we did not like eggs. She took us to our room and told us the guests across the hall were in charge of heat in our room. They had family in the area and we basically only saw them at breakfast. We were very cold during our stay and stayed wrapped in blankets and the quilt while sitting in the Sitting area. The bathroom's cold led one to get in and out quickly. Michelle was out for the evening. We were greeted Thanksgiving morning with partridges (?) eating grain in the beautiful driveway out our window. We had chosen a room without a water view. Our Thanksgiving breakfast was delicious and huge--stuffed French toast with a berry sauce and sausage. We loved talking with the other guests. I ate only half because I was sure that the Thanksgiving meal which was $50/serving would be overwhelming. The other guests asked Michelle if she needed our table to set up for Thanksgiving and she said soon. She told us it would be buffet and people could go back for seconds if there was enough. We went back to our room and huddled in blankets to watch the Thanksgiving Parade on TV. Our neighbors said the heat was set at 71 (?). Something may have been wrong because we finally felt heat at the end of our stay. We tried to find Michelle Thanksgiving night to ask for chai tea latte or cocoa for the guest coffee machine. My husband could not find her and so I called. She said No. I told her we were trying to get warm. The place settings for Thanksgiving were beautiful. The people seated at our table were delightful. The buffet was good, but I remember Michelle's missive that there could be seconds if there was enough food. So knowing that there was another room yet to get food, I did not take a lot. I expected so extraordinary choices, but it was common--but good -- Thanksgiving food. The sweet potato soufflé was very good. Two of the men at our table did go back for seconds. I was awaiting dessert which I expected to be huge. NOT. It was served to us--either pumpkin or pecan--a small slice with whipped cream. We went back to our room and watched some things we wanted to see. We were happy it was DIRECTV and we knew the channel lineup. There was no list in the room. The next morning breakfast was broiled grapefruit ( which our neighbor could not eat). Medicine interaction), scrambled eggs with a sauce and ham on a popover with asparagus. Our neighbor could not eat the asparagus. I could not eat the eggs and sauce and was able to get the popover bottom with a slice of ham. My husband did eat the eggs and was hoping he would not burp them up later. The asparagus was delicious. We again loved our conversation with our new friends. We then went back to ready for check out. We bought Belle Plantation wine glasses and whiskey sniffers. Michelle did not have anything for us to take them home safely, so we wrapped them in clothing in our suitcase and they got safely home. We then planned our exit to get us and our suitcases safely down the outside steps. I stayed in the door area and my husband stood below. I lowered the cases to My husband below outside as much as possible while I was tethered on the landing. We loved the beauty and the new friendships. We have checked Belle Grove off our Bucket List. read more
