Delicious dinner. Pleasant surprise hiding in Montross. My husband and I have eaten in most of the places in the area and this is the best.....most sophisticated food we have found and great service too. The Inn at Montross has a new owner. Bob Nicolio is fabulous. We wanted a weekend away from the hustle and bustle of Northern Virgjnia and found a gem a couple of hours away. The rooms are spacious and comfy. There is a restaurant on site with unbelievable meals. And the basement pub charming (you can also get the full menu served there).The staff is welcoming and wants to make your stay a memorable one. We had dinner there on both Friday and Saturday evening. The Fried Green Tomatoes were the best I'd ever had. So fresh and tasty. Scallops and Grits were absolutely amazing. The Filet cooked perfectly. No-filler Crab Cakes were, well, loaded with crabmeat. On Friday night Bob asked what we wanted for breakfast and what time. When we got downstairs on Saturday morning he had coffee and juice waiting for us, and whipped up nice omelets with fresh veggies and bacon. You've got to stay and have Sunday Brunch! What a spread! Again, the staff is exceptional and the chef knows how to get the job done. We left feeling like family and can't wait to visit again! read more

My fiance's family owns a vacation house in the Northern Neck. In the warmer months we catch crabs off the dock for lots of meals or grill on the deck. Since it's winter now, we've been exploring activities that can be enjoyed when it's chilly out. A lot of those activities we've discovered have been food related...and wine related... To celebrate a special occasion we went to the much raved about brunch at the Inn at Montross! I've only ever been to a brunch buffet at the Marriot in Northern Virginia (which will blow your mind away with how extravagant it is) so that was the mental picture I had in my head. When we got the this one however, I was surprised at how casual and small this buffet looked. Once I started exploring though they had a really nice variety of options. I actually appreciated that I wasn't overwhelmed with choices. They had a few chaffing dishes with interesting things like stone ground shrimp and grits, a pot pie casserole thingy, super cheesy au gratin potatoes, etc. They also had a small carving station, an omelette station, fresh fruit, a few pastries and a waffle station. The omelettes were beyond delicious! The only complaint I have is that the staff was a bunch of young guys and weren't super talkative about what different items were and didn't offer any suggestions. We got waffles but the guy making them didn't mention all of the different things that could be mixed into the batter before cooking. Things like chocolate chips, candy, sprinkles, fruit, etc. So my waffle was pretty bland tasting but if I had been told about the yummy add ins I'm sure it would have been perfection. All the breakfast meat was pretty standard too. The table consensus was that it was plain old Jimmy Dean sausage and Hormel/ Oscar Meyer bacon. I also got a Mimosa which was super tasty and they brought a basket of AMAZING biscuits to the table. I could have eaten just biscuits all morning and been content. read more

My wife and I just returned from an amazing last minute visit to the Inn at Montross and can enthusiastically report that it lived up to all of the exceptional reviews. After a brutal work week in D.C., we felt the need to escape for the weekend and was lucky enough to score a last second room at the Inn. All we knew at the time of booking was from fellow Yelp'ers and crossed our fingers that it would live up to its reputation. Thank goodness for yelp, because without all of you we would have never found the Inn at Montross and would not enjoyed a truly perfect weekend. Cindy and her entire team were terrific from the outset and consistent throughout. Upon arriving Cindy directed us to her favorite vineyard where we were pleased to find a nice Virginia wine and a spectacular venue. We returned to a delicious dinner highlighted by some of the best fried green tomatoes we have enjoyed outside of Charleston S.C. and scallops with grits that were out of this world. Following dinner we enjoyed a cocktail while sitting on rocking chairs out on the porch. It was just what was needed to unwind. Our room was quiet and comfortable. And after a good night's rest we enjoyed a very good breakfast before departing. All-in-all it was absolutely terrific. The Inn at Montross is 5 stars in my book. read more

Went here for their brunch buffet for my Dad's birthday. Making the reservation (which I recommend you do) wasn't to hard. We called, left a message, but never heard back. A few days later, called again, and they said we already had the table reserved (had put in the reservation, but just didn't call back). The food was awesome. I ended up having an omelet (among other things). My custom omelet from the omelet bar included crawfish tails, tomato, wild mushrooms and spinach. Man was it good. Other buffet items included a custom waffle bar (toppings can go inside, not just on top!), shrimp and grits (so good), hand carved fresh steak, and much more. I wish I could give this place 5 stars, but they were slow on refills and failed to make that return phone call to confirm our reservation. read more

Everything was Delicious!!! This review is for catering services provided by the Inn at Montross. My husband and I recently had our wedding reception catered by Cindy, from the Inn at Montross. Cindy put us at ease from the start. She tailored our menu to our taste and budget. She ensured we had our favorite dishes (beef tenderloin, grilled veggies, pasta with homemade pesto) and plenty of delicious options for all our vegetarian and carnivorous friends. She helped us add personal touches like homemade cinnamon ice cream, my husbands favorite flavor. Most of all, throughout the planning process and during the reception, Cindy and her staff treated us like family. We had our wedding and reception at Westmoreland State Park. Cindy and her team brought in the food, china, flatware, glassware, linens, etc. and orchestrated everything so well it felt as if we were back at the Inn. They were warm and welcoming, and very professional. Their food was wonderful and they helped create a fun and relaxed atmosphere where everyone felt special. It was a great value too, just $50 per person. We couldn't be happier. As an added bonus, we were able to sample their delicious food on a weekend getaway to the Inn at Montross. I'll start by saying that Ken (the male Inn Keeper) was right. They've spoiled all our B+B experiences from now on. They've really set the bar high for us. Reservation: We found the place through a Living Social deal. We originally reserved the room and then had to change the reservation. I was able to talk directly with Cindy (the lady Inn Keeper and Chef) a couple of times before we got there. Every time I spoke with her it was as if I was calling my best friend to see if she would have us over for the weekend. The Inn: It is located right by the courthouse and caddy cornered to the police station. It has a drug store and 3 restaurants within walking distance. The house was spotless, the wood shined and the linens free of wrinkles. The decoration goes well with the period plus it is very inviting. There's ample parking. Our room was the Potomac. The bed was very comfortable and the room itself felt very peaceful. Right outside our room in the second floor was a living room with board games and reading material that basically extended our space. The staff: I expected good southern hospitality and was not disappointed. The servers were very pleasant but Ken and Cindy do make an impression. Ken makes you feel at peace with his calm and collected demeanor. Cindy is a powerhouse of positive attitude. They seemed truly pleased to have us over at their house. They even kept my milk in the refrigerator and invited me right in to grab it whenever I needed it. The food: Oh boy, the food. So, now you know why you want to spend a few days at your best friend's house -- she is a fabulous chef! For dinner, the Inn turns into fine dining, with everything perfectly seasoned. We shared lobster and shrimp bisque, chicken, spinach and artichoke flatbread pizza, and linguine with wild mushrooms. For dessert we had Helle's "nothing" cake which is "A light airy faux chiffon cake layered with real raspberry puree and silky semi- sweet chocolate." Breakfasts were delicious. She really surprises you. Everything is 5-star hotel quality. Cindy will meet your dietary needs. She even put together a fantastic cheese platter for us one afternoon based on what we liked. The region: We were able to savor wine from 5 different wineries. For staying at the Inn she has arranged for free wine tastings at a few local wineries. We went beyond the "close" neighborhood and discovered a few more. This area is the birthplace of George Washington and Robert E. Lee. We were able to enjoy Stratford House, also discounted because of the connection with the Inn. Your connection to reality: The Inn does have free wi-fi but after the first night you sort of not want to connect to anything but the silence, peace and quiet that surrounds you. Nothing is rushed, which helps to really relax. The one regret: Not returning for Sunday Brunch. We checked out shortly after breakfast to enjoy some of the sights. We truly should have just turned around instead of heading home. At least we have something special to look forward to our return. And we will return. Do we recommend it: You betcha! You gotta get out of DC at least once, to breathe in some fresh air, sleep soundly and eat gourmet food - all in one fantastic little place. read more

We will be back! My fiance and I drove down from Arlington, VA for a relaxing weekend away. Cindy and the entire Inn crew did not disappoint! From the time we arrived, everyone welcomed us and encouraged us to make ourselves at home. We ate at a local restaurant, but we quickly learned it did not even compare to the food at the Inn. The reputation of the Inn was evident as we visited numerous local vineyards. Everyone spoke highly of the Inn and the management. Its close proximity to multiple Northern Neck vineyards made it perfect for a vineyard weekend. We also lucked out and were able to attend The Wine & Oyster Festival at Straford Hall. Perhaps our favorite part of the weekend was enjoying a bottle of wine on the porch in the rocking chairs, something we never get to do in the hustle and bustle of the city. After a 5-star dinner, we met a few exceptional characters from the town of Montross. Their shared their extraordinary lives with us, telling us how they ended up in the small town and the marks they've made for themselves. It was a true highlight to listen to the tales of not only Cindy and Ken, but also those in the town who frequent the Inn. The review wouldn't be complete without raving about Sunday brunch! If we find ourselves having a lazy Sunday, we will definitely drive the hour and a half down to Montross just for this delicious cooking. This place is wonderful. The innkeepers, Cindy and Ken, are very sweet and welcoming people. As soon as you walk in you feel right at home, welcomed by friends. The best B&B I have ever been to so far and, we will be back when our schedule permits. Cindy and Ken are gracious, engaging hosts who made our stay over the top enjoyable. The room was clean, quiet and comfortable. We arrived Wednesday afternoon and once settled in were given all the information that made our stay pleasant and easy. We had a wonderful breakfast every morning and fantastic meal Thursday evening after about an hour of wine tasting. In addition to our nice stay at the Inn we found that the town to be very charming. This charming Bed and Breakfast Inn (only five or six rooms) is a renovated, historical property. It is immaculate, comfortable and run like a true Southern home. We stayed but a night---cushy bed, nicely decorated room with gleaming hardwoods. Here you can remember the sound of 'quiet' and a feeling of peace. Away from the rat race, hidden off the beaten track, owned and operated locally by genuine Southerners. Management is on site- smiling- ready to resolve any problem or meet any need. On the main level there is a reception area with three adjoining dining rooms with a lounge- and a fully stocked bar. If the weather is good, have your aperitif in a cushioned rocking chair on the front porch. Very Southern, very genteel. If you have come to stay the night and eat- you are in for a treat. The level of sophistication of this dinner menu cannot be overstated for its location- who KNEW?- I had crab cakes Asian style and husband had the Beef Wellington. There's an 'Airline Chicken' (ask- there's a story). I saw the lamb on someone else's plate- and couldn't believe how wonderful IT looked. The kitchen is still experimenting with some new dishes and featured a fantastic pear and fig salad with a Parmesan crouton that evening. If you're lucky- they will have found it a permanent spot on the menu. There is also a wine list featuring Virginia but has some Californian and Australian wines too. Now for the Sunday brunch, already renown locally. Call a head for a reservation if not staying the night. The highlights on my plate were a mac and cheese that rightly has become a local favorite, spicy shrimp to peel, and a roast beef with gravy. There was also a waffle station, an omelette station, beautiful fruit- but I was saving room for the desserts. Everything in miniature so you can try them all. Well, most of them anyway. Tiny cups with granola and berries, yogurty filling topped with cream, different kinds of truffles, homemade breads and pastries. Everything so very good! And of course freshness cannot be overstated as this Inn is in the middle of a major East coast farming region. Kinda the Salinas Valley of Virginia. We learned about the Inn by purchasing a deal on Living Social. After our stay last weekend, we cannot wait to come back. They also have a restaurant at the Inn, so come hungry! The Inn is a little less than two hours away from DC, and an easy drive, perfect for a weekend. We arrrived around 8:45PM on a Friday evening, and they had a table for us to have dinner, even with short notice, the food was great (Chef Cindy is an amazing chef, try the grit cakes), and the service was good. The next morning, we had a yummy breakfast and went out wine tasting. They are well-situations near five wineries, and have discounts at all of them, as well as two different historical sites. After wine-ing, we came back and rocked out on the front porch rocking chairs. If you have the opportunities, stay for Sunday brunch. The spread included soft shell crab, an omlette bar, belgian waffle bar and a carving board. Make sure to top it off with a strawberry mimosa from bartender John. My boyfriend and I spent a weekend here and loved the experience. Sarah was extremely welcoming and friendly, always asking if we need anything. Our room was very comfortable and cosy. We had dinner at the restaurant at the Inn and it was wonderful as well. Free breakfast on our first morning there was delicious- biscuits, bacon, eggs, potatoes, and home made jams. On our 2nd night, we had a late lunch hence didn't go downstairs to the restaurant until about 8:30pm (they close at 9pm), but because it wasn't busy, they decided to close early. However, the staff was extremely nice and reopened the kitchen to make us a nice dinner. We ended up at the bar in the basement with our food and had a nice chat with the staff. We also attended the Inn's Sunday brunch and can't stop praising the amazing shrimp and grits, pasta, biscuits, etc. that we had. One of the best brunch food we've ever had! Sarah also found out that we were going wine tasting and gave us a coupon for two free tastings at a local winery. We had an amazing and relaxing weekend at Montross and so glad that we found this little gem to stay and dine at. Definitely coming back next year! read more

My best friend and I used a Living Social deal and did the weekend stay here with the winery tours. Honestly we had never actually stayed at an Inn before so the intricacies of it were a little beyond us. We weren't sure what was okay and what wasn't. Overall though the owners/chefs of the Inn were really pretty awesome and it's a beautiful house. Cindy is a very nice (albeit hyper) person and she made sure that anything we could possibly want or need was covered. Ken (husband and co-owner) took a little getting used to for us. He seemed a little more standoffish to us when we first got there, but once we got to talking to him the first night we totally got over it and thought he was awesome as well. The wait staff were all really nice and helpful for the most part... pretty sure one of them thought we were a couple and not just friends which was amusing to us. We did have one waiter who wasn't that great during brunch but he wasn't really bad either. Couldn't remember his name to save my life but honestly we probably would have thought he was great too had the rest of the staff not been just so on point. Our only real issue was the fact that we couldn't get any air conditioning in our room. Unfortunately it seems like every two rooms share a unit and if you don't get there first then you are out of luck... We were always out of luck lol !! The food here is great!! When we first arrived Ken asked us if there was anything we didn't eat in preparation for the next mornings' breakfast. We didn't really have anything but my friend asked if we could make a request. She wanted French toast (nothing unusual there she ALWAYS wants french toast). He said no they pre-determine the menu and only buy what they need for each breakfast and everyone gets the same thing. However the next morning we came down and they surprised us with French toast. They altered breakfast so everyone got french toast. Honestly that was an amazing thing for them to do. Just an example of how they try to make sure all of their guests get exactly what they want or need to have a fabulous stay. All in all I'm not sure I'm sold on the whole "Inn" thing but this place is wonderful if you are a B&B Inn kind of person!! Definitely check them out :) read more

My boyfriend and I came down for a weekend getaway and were sorry it couldn't have been longer. From the moment we arrived ( which was late at nearly 9) we were so warmly welcomed it was like they had known us forever. Cindy greeted us and offered us drinks and food. Even though ken was getting off shift he got us settled in, got us drinks and an amazing chicken pizza- made to order. I highly recommend taking advantage of the winery yours included in the room- they were inviting and we found some new favorites at generals ridge and ingleside ... Tho if you're doing all the wineries take a nap and schedule a later dinner. Dinner was amazing and Joey took excellent care of us even encouraged us to get creative with our bar orders, as kens skills shine! We ordered salads and the stuffed quail and salmon Wellington- unique and so delicious! Cooked to perfection and full of flavor! After which we took our drinks out to the patio. The included breakfast was also great and fueled us up for a great day at the wineries. I can't say enough about this charming cozy comfortable catering staff & inn. This is our second stay at the Inn at Montross but our first visit with the new innkeepers, Austin and Sarah. We were very pleased with our stay- we were lucky to catch the Thursday family dinner and were pleasantly surprised in the tasty preparation of items that we chose. Breakfast was another highlight, and Austin was very accommodating of our picky tastes. The food was again well prepared and delicious. Our room was very comfortable and I love the upstairs sitting area and rocking on the porch in the evening. It's a great getaway from the fast pace of the city. It's like time stops when you come here. It's a great jumping-off point for visiting some of the new local wineries and historical sites too. It sounds like the new innkeepers plan to start making some very interesting packages and planning fun events. We'll have to come back again! read more

Montross is a small town on the Northern Neck with a number of historical places to visit nearby. From sitting outside on the porch, visiting with the other guest and the Inn keeper to enjoying a wonderful bunch on Sunday the weekend passed in a flash. This is the second time my husband and I have been to the Inn at Montross. We had such a nice time the first time, we invited another couple to go for Valentine's Day. Everything was great! We were greeted as soon as we walked in, had friendly and attentive wait staff, everyone checked on us throughout the meal, and the food was excellent! The atmosphere is very inviting and comfortable, and they had both fireplaces going and soft music playing... It was perfect! To me customer service is very important and is the reason I will return again and continue to recommend the Inn at Montross to everyone (of course the food is excellent too!)! Beautiful restaurant and great service. The appetizers we ordered were delicious (oysters and avocado salad) and the wine was really good too. My wife's entry was really good, but I ordered the flounder with crabmeat and was really disappointed. You could tell that my fish had been done long before my wife's entry was ready so when they brought it out the fish was mushy and barely luke warm with a sauce that really overpowered the fish. I know fish can be difficult to cook, but this was really lousy. Anyway, we enjoyed the wine and dessert was great so overall I'll give them 3 stars.
