Sadly today I called in and discovered they have discontinued the shipping, walk-in sales only. It was the best. Every year we'd anticipate the cooler weather and plan our order and call it in over the phone and they'd pack a flat rate priority box with as much aged cheddar, fresh curds Colby and brick as possible and find a window where the weather would be cool and it wouldn't sit at the post office over a holiday or weekend. I'd bring them to holiday parties and hand them out to friends until there was only one or two pounds left and then we'd make that last until the next order. Sadly that was our last order, now begins the new adventure of getting the cheese. I don't know what's going to happen. I'll report back when I find out. read more

If you like sharp cheddar, try their 10 yr old cheddar. YUM! If you are into sliced American cheese, their cheese tastes a whole lot better than store brand varieties. ...and then there is the horseradish cheddar. I could keep going!!!!!! Delicious cheese at an amazing price! My favorite is the 15 year old Aged Sharp Cheddar.

I got 2 bags of fresh curds, mozzarella whips, and a soda. Curds came in ziplock bags but were fresh and delicious. Whips came vacuum sealed and refrigerated. Salty but oh so good. Can of Sundrop hit the spot. They do take cards but prefer cash. This is your small rural shop, so adjust your expectations but service was great and I will be back. read more

I am on a crusade (assisted by my brother), a holy quest for Colby like we had when we were kids in the 60s. It was delivered by a truck that delivered Elsheimer's cold cuts from Wisconsin to the Sherman country store in rural Hardin County, IA. I have no idea where the cheese was made. It was in the large longhorn style and was firm, rubbery, sweet and slightly salty. When Mom bought a chunk we devoured it like candy. I am still hoping to find some five star Sherman class Colby. To that end, I ordered two pounds from Belle Plaine Cheese Factory. It is not close, but I have had worse. It is pretty mild, but the main flavor is of mild cheddar. It is not offensively acidic as is some. It needs some salt. The texture just OK. At least it is not gooey, but it does not have the little holes and when a slice is bent it does not reveal much curd. It is not quite good enough for snacking so will be used for grating into casseroles or onto tortilla chips. I am not sure this is made by Belle Plaine, so cannot be sure who the maker is. I think they are the distributer. I understand that the rules governing the definition of Colby were changed a few years back and maybe no one makes a good product anymore. I will keep looking, but Belle Plaine is off the list. If you want mild cheddar, try their Colby. read more

No longer operational (Kraft's pressure on the FDA to institutionalize stainless steel and steam cleaning put a lot of small cheese factories out of business), but if Don is around when you go in he'll be happy to walk you through the process and show you all the equipment up close. Since closing his operation, he's just been selling cheese (some of the older cheddar is still from when he made it on site) and other random knick-knacks, plus a lot of recently acquired taxidermy specimens. Huh... interesting. There are actually some bad reviews of this place. Oh well, some people like to complain I guess... Now that my wife and I have spent some time eating cheeses in Holland and Belgium I think I know a good cheese when I eat one. We have gotten for Christmas some 3 year sharp cheddar, habanero cheese, jalapeno cheese & fennuusto cheese... they are all very tasty cheeses and typical with what I remember growing up here. Back when I was a youth growing up in Central Wisconsin, you could find an operational cheese factory similar to Belle Plaine about ever mile or so. If I am not mistaken there are now only two of these type places left in Shawano County. I miss the old factories that would have fresh cheese curd every day. The squick and taste of freshly salted cheddar curds is a wonderful memory. The curds at Belle Plaine are fresh and best I have been able to find. We now live in Ohio, so we usually bring back a cooler full of various cheese and curds. When we get low or for the holiday's we have then ship cheese. To have such a variety of cheeses and other products makes this even more special. Friendly family run business. They have always treated us with respect and personal service not found in the franchised outlets. Try some real cheese from real cheese makers. Let your taste bud experience what cheese really taste like. Aged cheese may not be for you at first but you will appreciate them more as you sample various cheeses. T. Grumpy read more

It is hard to pick one favorite of their many cheese flavors. i suggest trying the 5 year old cheddar - Sharp and really good! Look around the old factory to see the way the cheese used to be made. Belle Plain Cheese SHOP (no longer a factory) :( - sells a surprisingly wide variety of local Wisconsin cheeses. A trade-off of sorts. No longer a factory but now offering everything from Asiago to goat milk cheddar to feta. If you want to know how it is made the super friendly owners - The Brandl's will talk you through the process and show you photos. We came home with some of the best curds (super fresh and squeaky), 10-year old aged cheddar and gouda I've ever had. Picked-up some local preserves and honey too. We will be back next summer when visiting lovely Shawano County! read more

The curds are also sold at the local grocery store--Econo Foods and local gas stations. They are best right after they are made. You can tell if they are fresh if they squeek when you bite into them. Live in Shawano only several miles away.Get out there to buy cheese about a half a dozen times a year. The prices are very good most cheese is around $4.00 a pound.Don is a very nice guy` and always goes out of his way to be helpful.Product is as good as you can get nowadays. I grew up next to a cheese factory and the curds he sells microwaved slightly are almost as good as fresh out of the vat. read more
