Simon's knows EXACTLY what it is and lives up to being a touristy stop for anyone wanting to experience the various Wisconsin cheese options. The entryway has a map where tourists add pins showing where they are visiting from (and it is pretty much covered). They have various Wisconsin merch (magnets, jams, cheese heads) and an unfathomable amount of cheeses and sausages. They offer pizza and subs in the back (but we didn't grab either). Pros: Amazing selection of meats and cheeses, plus ambiance is spot on. Cons: Don't come here expecting any of the staff to make any recommendations or with the hopes of sampling anything (not happening). During my visit, the sandwich staff was having a debate on when they were getting off and the cashier at the front was complaining about how many tourists come through. Overall, purchased a few cheeses and peppered summer sausage and a bottle of wine. I'd probably try a different "cheese place" if I found myself back up in the area. read more

Recently, when in the area for a family reunion, Simon's was recommended by a number of relatives for their cheese curds and summer sausage selections. As it turned out, this was a fabulous recommendation, as the store is conveniently located and the selection and staff are wonderful. They carry everything from cheeses to meats to Wisconsin memorabilia. I must give a shout out to the staff for their helpfulness in everything from helping to pick out the best summer sausage to assisting getting our purchases ready to carry on a 10 hour trip home (including airport layovers and drive time). This place is so amazing. I can't believe I've waited almost 3 years to come here after moving to the area. Atmosphere: Large parking lot, easily could fit 50 cars in this lot. The store is HUGE. I mean wow. So big. To really look at everything they offer would take about a half hour or more. The bathrooms are very clean, and they have 2 stalls and a baby changing station in the womens. Service: Wow wow wow. The service here is top notch. David the general manager is extremely personable and knowledgeable about their product. The staff that checked me out at the counter was great too, I felt like family here. Product: They sell SOOOO much cheese. Meat, pickled veggies, drink mixes, pizzas (YUMMM), gifts, beer, and so much more. Wow, just wow. I had some friends tell me they wanted me to get some cheese curds and string cheese for them while I was up here on business. I did a quick search and this is the top place that popped up and that was for a reason. This place has LOTS of different cheese, as well as a deli, New Glarus beer and lots of different items. I picked up the fresh cheese curds (thank you 12 degree weather since my hotel fridge doesn't have a freezer) and some string cheese, as well as smoked string cheese. I got a smoked string cheese for myself, as well and already tried some. The smoke is prevalent but it is still very good. They had a big parking lot for buses and when u get inside u see why. There is something for everyone from cheese to fudge to greet take and make pizzas made to order and some in the freezer section frozen. They have various meats and sausage. Candy. packer and WI gear. Their shipping was down for awhile over the holidays. So now I live 4 hours away. I ordered up a lot of cheese that I like and it al was frozen so it will last awhile. I was on a speedy mission to get in-get out in under 10 minutes because I had a flight to catch but I've heard wonderful things about Simon's Cheese so this was on my "must visit" before I left Appleton. I am *definitely* coming back and spending more time in this shop. Senses were on overload when I walked in....wine, cheeses, accessories, gift baskets, fresh made to order pizzas and sandwiches food counter in the back and of course, samples! I was quickly assisted by someone who walked me towards their speciality cheeses and award winners. She was absolutely wonderful in providing prompt service because I had explained my time crunch. I am only sorry I didn't have more time to spend at Simon's! Prices are very very reasonable. I bought their award winning sharp cheddar, their recommended ghost pepper cheese (!!!!), and award winning feta. This tasty trio clocked in under $15. So, as someone with lactose intolerance, I wondered why in heaven's name would I come here? Well, read on. I visited Appleton for a work trip and having never visited before I had no idea what Wisconsin was like. Of course I knew the state was known for cheese but wasn't sure if that would be anything different than any other place. During my trip, I met a local who said that a visit here was mandatory. She also said try the cheese curds. The who? Cheese curds. Ok. I'll try them. So I drove here today on my last day and sampled some cheese. Good stuff. Noticed the souvenirs, very cute. Then went to the back of the store and saw a little sample area... Next to it were packaged cheese curds. Hmmm.. So I tried a few. Then, a few more. I walked around the store a bit and found myself heading back to the curds. Then tried more. I literally ended up being "that guy" that walks around the samples repeatedly while trying to act like like the sample was my first. Looked around to see if anyone was noticing me eating and eating these samples. I finally decided, yes, I will buy them. So I picked up a few fresh packages, some frozen too (for the plane) and a ton of other cheese. I ended up spending $90 on cheese -- and don't forget -- I'm lactose intolerant. I can't wait to have these curds (which were made today.. And they squeaked!) not to mention some of the other many many many varieties of block cheese I bought. How is it that I didn't discover this place until AFTER I moved away from Wisconsin?! Part gift shop, part specialty food store, this place is amazing. Don't go here when you're hungry, because you'll walk out with one of everything. They make their own fudge (delicious), and they make fudge with cheese (which apparently gives it a cheesecake-like texture). They've also got fresh curds (you better believe they're squeaky), and tons of specialty cheeses. They even have waxed cheese in all kinds of fun shapes (think Packer player, Christmas tree, Jack-o-lantern, etc.) Oh, and you can do make-your-own 6 packs of New Glarus, which is awesome (but again, doubly awesome if you no longer live in WI but need a Spotted Cow fix)! Everyone who worked there was super friendly, and very willing to answer questions. We had to ship some cheese out of state, and they were great about helping with the process, explaining they'd delay the shipping due to Thanksgiving (so the package wouldn't sit out too long), etc. They can get a bit pricey, since a lot of it is specialty stuff, but it's well worth it for the flavor and quality (hello bacon cheddar!). My first time visiting this particular cheese store was in March. I will definitely be back. I didn't realize how big the place was. I typically go to Krohns Cheese store in Luxemburg so it was nice to hear they work together. They had a huge selection of gifts. Tervis Tumblers (my addiction) along with Badgers/Brewers and seasonal gifts. They also make custom gift baskets. Their deli was mouth watering. Homemade pizzas with their cheese was so flavorful and stringy, so much better than frozen pizza. Which I learned you can freeze their pizzas if you wrap an extra layer of plastic wrap around the whole pizza. Their homemade warm sandwiches were equally as good. I'm not a huge chocolate fan, but they make a chocolate cheese fudge, which sounds strange, but sooo good. No flavor of cheese, just less dry of a texture. Of course I purchased their largest block. Pick up a couple beers, a bottle wine, some unique cheese, or come home with a homemade take and bake pizza. You could also grab something else that is in the store. I always have a hard time finding a gift for mom and mother in law for holidays. Now I have a great place to stop and get great gifts. This is my absolute favorite cheese factory! Simon's has the best cheese! I recommend trying their odds and ends cheese and sausage tray, which is made with leftover cheese and sausage pieces. The onion spread is amazing, well worth a try! I'm so thankful I live so close and I can stop by whenever I am out of cheese! I should have checked out Yelp first- I didn't notice the fried curds either. I did, of course, get fresh ones. I've liked curds for years but only had same-day fresh ones recently, and they're tons better. They had plenty of cheeses, and samples of some. The gift shop includes lots of fun Green Bay Packer souvenirs as well as other fun gifts - margarita glasses, magnets, scarves, etc. They also have several other local Wisconsin products - honey, salsa, sodas, beer, etc. Now, THE CHEESE!
