I visit many nurseries; from Torrance up to half moon bay and this is my favorite local nursery. It's small but compact and has some unusual smaller plants like hellebores and rare salvias. I'm pretty local to this nursery and have driven past it hundreds of times. I have been looking for air purifying plants for inside my house for about a year now and finally had a day off to actually visit. While Bellefontaine Nursery is not as large as some other nurseries I have visited (San Gabriel Nursery, to be exact) the customer service I received was top notch. Don't be too shy to ask questions. They really do have the answers to gardening questions you might have. They have a good selection of indoor plants, as well as pottery and gardening supplies. They have a large selection of rose bushes and succulents. I left with four plants and two pots but I know that I will be back again for more items. read more

Bellefontaine is my favorite nursery and always my first stop for my gardening needs and more often for friendly advise. Owners Alan and Dale provide very helpful and friendly advice. It is their 80 yr old family business and that longevity is due to customer service. Their personal service sets this nursery apart from others. They also have nice gifts and supplies. Alan and Dale have patiently answered my many questions and helped me add many plants to my garden. They will help you get what you are looking for even if it is not from them. Fair selection of succulents and smaller plants, considering the size compared to other nurseries. Cheaper than San Gabriel nursery, and much cheaper than anything on Colorado Blvd. Definitely recommend if you're just starting to add plants to your space, or looking for interesting succulents to spice it up. read more

This is a nursery straight from a Mad Max film. Most of the offered plants look as wilted, as if they havent been tended to for weeks on end. I expected some wiley vegetation, but upon arrival, I thought I arrived at the Scholl Canyon dump. Parking lot was empty, and the one employee who worked in the office where the sparse household plant offerings were located barely feigned a greeting. How is this place still in business, outside of being some pet project for a trust fund baby? Are hipsters just giving this joint 5 stars based off some monthly ra ra plant seminar? I agree with a few of the reviews, it's not a neat nursery, but the owners are so educated and it's easy to chat with them for what you're looking for. Their inventory is on the low side so unfortunately I couldn't get everything I needed but the owner did offer to order more for me. I would probably have given this place a 3 star but because of how good the service was and how sweet the owner is I gave it a 4 star. The lack of inventory made me want to do a 3 star because I couldn't finish my project in time. I would go here again! read more

This shop is so incredible! After 6 months of driving past, I finally stopped in to explore. Left with a huge smile, a new addiction/hobby, and two beautiful houseplants - Monstera and Philodendron brasil. Genuinely can't wait to come back and get more. Everything they had was gorgeous and perfectly curated -- from indoor plants to succulents to veggies to roses.. Such a badass place that I'm grateful to have in the neighborhood. The shopkeepers were SO rad. They were incredibly helpful, patient, and informative; an absolute joy to talk to. Their enthusiasm and love for what they do really shows. They helped me select not only the type of plant that fit my needs (indoor, not easy to kill) but the specific guys that I took home. They also suggested and discussed plants I was interested in but they didn't have yet (christmas cactus, I got my eye on you!). read more

I purchased some peppers and succulents from this place last year, and they grew well, so I returned this year and purchased a TON of herbs and ornamentals. Within a short period of time, I realized that all of the mint that I purchased had mint blight! It ripped through ALL of the mint and even the salvia limelight. I did what I could to stop it with neem and removing the affected leaves but it was too powerful, it started in on my prized oregano patch which I started from seed and is huge and fluffy, now it is dying from mint blight, it moved to another salvia, then another, and even a burdock. I had to rip out my burdock, seriously prune back my oregano (which as I am typing this, decided that I should just rip it out because I don't think I want to take the risk of it continuing to spread), and the salvias and aggressively spray with neem in HOPES that it will all survive, which may be folly because I have read on the internet that mint blight is near impossible to get rid of and it is advised to tear out and discard infected plants and disinfect the containers and area they were growing in. When I tossed the mints and limelight salvia, I bleached and scrubbed their containers and set them in the sun to be sure that the spores were killed. If you want blight and disease, then shop here. This blight has devastated my gorgeous garden. One last thing, I also got a scabiosa plant from here, and within a week I noticed it had powder mildew and was being attacked by aphids which I never have an issue with in my garden. They do not take care of their plants here. A ton of things are dyeing, not watered, not tended to, and if my mints (peppermint, spearmint, lemon balm) and limelight salvia has blight, then you can rest assured that anything that is susceptible to it in their nursery is going to be infected with it too. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. Their diseased plants have literally ruined a ton of hard work I've put in growing and nurturing plants from seed. HORRENDOUS! ** EDITED JUNE 2, 2021 I can see that the owner reached out via YELP, and at first I was under the impression that he wanted to make the situation right, but then said that he 'felt confident' that his nursery did not introduce blight into our gardens... hm. I've NEVER had this blight, in fact, I had to look it up on the net to find out what it was, so, dear owner, this did not already exist in my garden and happened immediately after I purchased your plants. If the owner had said 'hey, I'm sorry, clearly our plants did this to you', I might go back to resolve this, but to this day the blight continues, one more plant that has it. So, another one will have to get tossed. I think after the numerous plants I have thrown away I have successfully gotten rid of it in my garden, but no way would I go back to Bellefontaine. It's been really heart breaking having to deal with this issue, and then to have the owner imply that I CAUSED IT, or that it came from someplace else (when I've not purchased any other plants from any other nursery!) is just an insult. If you want a TRULY wonderful nursery where people are friendly and inviting and actually smile with you and engage with you when you arrive, go to Present Perfect nursery in Pasadena. The plants are super healthy. The staff is wonderful, and the place looks ALIVE and not like an untended ghost town. I got some super healthy plants here, with lovely white, lively roots and the staff was moving plants, watering, tending, pruning when I arrived. None of which I have seen at Bellefontaine. You can't even get a hello at Bellefontaine. As one of the other yelpers had also mentioned, it's a ghost town with tons of neglected plants growing roots out of the pot into the ground, wilted things and staff who could not care less if you are there. They have NEVER said hello to me when I've gone to Bellefontaine. It always made me feel unwelcome, the few times I have been there. No thank you, no more. My sister and I were looking for aloe vera plants and found a good selection to pick from. It's probably not the most organized place but I loved the small business feel. The owner was so friendly and gave us useful tips on how to care for our new plants. He wrote our receipts on carbon copy paper which I thought was awesome..who does that anymore? Thanks to Yelp I discovered this nursery. I was searching a camellia plant (Nuccio's was closed) to give as a birthday gift. When I arrived at Bellafontaine's I only had 20 minutes to look around before it closed. A quick walk around so many varieties of plants & discovered exactly what I wanted fo a fair price. The staff person was very helpful in helping me to pick out the best plant & gave me tips on how The soil should be amended before planting. I would give the nursery five stars but it does look a little run down & need some TLC, but it is a gem that could shine with some polish. read more

I am a retired landscape designer and while in business only bought plant materials from wholesale nurseries. I discovered Bellefontaine recently, and can tell you from experience this small nursery is hands down the best in our area, and I have visited just about every one. Firstly, Dale and Alan (cousins) are very knowledgeable. The first test I use for every nursery is to ask for plants using their botanical name, not common name. If the salesperson gives me a blank stare, which happens more often than not, I move on. Not only are Dale and Allen very knowledgeable, but they are willing to spend time and discuss the various attributes of species within a given genus. It's a wonderful place to just wander through the collection, not arranged as precisely as perhaps a larger nursery, but that's one of the charms of this business. I highly recommend Bellefontaine, whether you are a Master Gardener, a designer, or a gardening enthusiast - these are the guys you can trust. One more thing, their pricing is very fair; I have seen specimen plants here in 2 gallon containers that anywhere else would have been transplanted into a 5 gallon container at double the price. read more

Some people have a green thumb but not me. I have always loved roses and wanted to try planting some. The people at a big chain stores garden department told me to dig a hole and just water them very once In awhile. At Bellefontaine- Dale talked to me about soil, how much sun the location got, how much space between each plant I needed and the difference between bare root roses and the ones that were about a year old and in a plastic bucket. I prefer to shop at local businesses, so this was the right place for me. There definitely a wide variety of outdoor plants. Though, my partner and I were looking for indoor plants which there is a smaller selection. The workers are kind and helpful in answering questions. Each time I've visited the place there were different (more or less) indoor plants. Which I don't expect small shops to have massive quantities. The rubber plant we bought is doing great so far. Bellefontaine, for me, is the Target of plants (that is, if Target had friendly, helpful, and unbelievably knowledgable staff). Go in for potting soil. Lots of potential here, despite being a slab of concrete on Fair Oaks. Besides the seed selection, they seemed pretty well stocked, but it was hard to tell as several things were not labeled, or not priced. Despite obviously being a first time visitor walking in a circle three times, the guy behind the counter kept his head down and eyes averted , absolutely refusing to acknowledge my presence when I hung around him, eager to make a few inquiries. Another guy (who by his air of authority) I assume worked there brusquely passed me twice as well! W T F ? They ignored me so hard, it was hostile. Guys, I have money, and I spend it in stupid ways ALL THE TIME. I was eager to drop a big chunk of cash on my first visit dressing up my new huge yard with exotic specimens like passion vines, tiger lilies, climbing roses, clematis and pink magnolia trees. Yeah, I've experienced better. OSH is better. For a truly awesome, friendly, and knowledgeable staff, and infinitely higher quality stock and greater variety, do yourself a favor, and drive a few more miles to San Gabriel Nursery.
