Very professional office. The doctor takes his time with you and you don't feel rushed.

Earlier this year, I was experiencing a chronic red eye issue, where my eyes would alternate turning really red, and would last about a week or so, before switching eyes. I had my annual vision exam with an optometrist at the beginning of the year, was cleared of any issues, but figured I would see a specialist to be safe. Especially since the problem did not appear to be going away. The office, despite obviously being busy, was efficient and kind. After filling out all my forms, and doing the initial tests, Dr. Dacanay came and did his check-up. He was able to reassure me that everything was still ok with my eyes, and that the issue was due to dryness as a result of prolonged exposure to screentime from long work days, and possibly from allergies as well. He made a recommendation for an over-the-counter eyedrop I could buy, which has kept the problem mostly at bay since. Highly recommend this office for anyone in need of an ophthalmologist! read more

I feel sorry for those who are lured and not cured by assembly line surgery. This business -which likes to be thought of as a Medical Center- is in the business of making money. With the supervision of the bosses girlfriend, Cindy, who is also a medical doctor. But it is all about making money and not quality care. My husband has his eyes ruined by this outfit. And we are contemplating a law suit. read more

An all around great experience, with a very clean facility and cordial, helpful staff. Dr. Dacanay was very good at identifying the problem with my eye, as we we able to catch the recurring problem when it was happening, and best of all, find a CURE! He listened well, and answered all of my questions without rushing me, even though he was a bit backlogged. This was all really possible because of Cindy, the wonderful front desk person who helped me three times across three days over the phone as my eye condition continued to worsen. She was patient and helpful in every way, and didn't leave me hanging. Dr. Dacanay did not have any appointments available the first two days, but on the third day, Cindy was able to get me squeezed in for a visit due to a last-minute cancellation. From the moment I met Dr. Dacanay in 2016, I was blown away by his obvious care for me and for my well being. He went out of his way to teach me what was going on with my eyes. I learned from him that I have narrow angle glaucoma, something I had never even heard of. The way he approached me and empowered me to really know why I was experiencing the symptoms I was experiencing, and the choices I had for how to take care of my eyes, was such an expression of how he cares for the people who come to him for help. He REALLY impressed me, and I felt a deep sense that I can totally trust him, something that is very special when you are seeing someone for something as important as your eyes. And this has been my consistent experience with him ever since. Every time I have seen him he has done everything he can to support me, including educating me and providing options I had not heard of before. He went out of his way to see me in the morning before his office opened, because my right eye was really irritated and he had no available appointments and was going out of town the next day. He has both great skill and a heart of gold. And his whole office staff have also consistently provided me with wonderful support and care as well. I told him what a huge difference he has made for me, and he looked into my eyes with deep sincerity and told me that he is receiving as much from the people he serves, as he is giving, and added that "We're all just walking each other home." I LOVE that quote from Ram Dass, and I really needed to hear that in that moment. You are deeply blessed if you get to be supported by this beautiful human being. I recently transitioned to this office from another which I didn't care for. I find this office to be highly efficient and friendly. Maria one of the assistants who does a lot of the testing is excellent! Dr. Dacanay spends the time to explain the results of the tests in a way that's easy to understand. My only complaint is the location and lack of parking. read more

Dr Dacanay is a brilliant, knowledgeable, efficient surgeon and a warm, friendly, collaborative doctor. It's unusual to get those two sides together in a doctor. You can't get much better than that. Also, the office is well-run and efficient, and his office staff is beyond first-rate, extremely helpful and respectful. You won't have those hours-long waits and be shuffled around from room to hallway to room like in some of the other big-name ophthalmologists around here, and your eyes will be treated with the maximum of care, concern, and expertise. At my cataract surgery, Dr. Dacanay's good humor, and that of the surgery center staff, made the whole thing, if not literally fun, then at least better than tolerable. I should also mention that unlike a previous ophthalmologist I went to, he gave me lens options never mentioned or seemingly even thought of by the prior one. He took into account my entire situation, including the differences between my two eyes, not even mentioned by the other guy. 3 days ago I had cataract surgery performed by Dr. Dacanay, a wonderfully brilliant, skilled -----and heart-guided person. Now, we live 1 in Davis, an hr drive from Berkeley,. Husband & I have changed all our great doctors to Davis ones. BUT, we wouldn't dream of changing from Dr. Dacanay. Yesterday, barely 24 hrs after surgery, when I went for the follow-up appt, all tests showed my eyesight (left eye) improved from 20/50 to 20/20! I look forward to returning in a few months on behalf of my right eye. NOTE: PLEASE do your research & find a highly qualified ophthalmologist, or any physician for that matter. Some doctors graduated at the BOTTOM of their class but their licenses (hung on their walls) look like the best doctor's. If you end up not feeling comfortable with a doctor--then leave his/her "care" (I'm assuming you have that freedom--I realize not everyone does... another reason for universal health care). read more

I was in New Jersey during the winter of 2020 and my California self was freezing to death so I spent hours front of the heater to keep myself alive and warm and because of that all the heat has gone up and into my eyes and in result of that my eyes were dried out and it was very irritating. Reached out to Bellevue to go see the doc and he was amazing. Took his time didn't rush things and me feel like he cared so thanks for all his help. I have Glaucoma and my eye pressure is 20 over 20. I had laser surgery in June, and after one month, my eye pressure is down to 15 for both eyes! This is really good, and the Doctor is a very nice person! My mom usually goes to another Doctor in a different office, but I am so happy with Dr. Dacanay's services that I switched her over. Now she is a patient in the same office as me. Glaucoma runs in my family, my mother has it too, so I am very happy to have found a doctor who I can trust and believe in his performances. I've been a patient of Dr. Dacanay's for about five years. He performed cataract surgery on my left eye in 2017. I requested a replacement lens that would allow me to read in bed without glasses, since I was willing to wear glasses for all other purposes. The day after surgery I was dumbfounded to see the world clearly without a ghastly yellow tint and be able to read the way I requested. Two days ago Dr. Dacanay did my right eye. The cataract was not as debilitating as the one on the left eye; however, it had made that eye's vision sufficiently blurred and tinted to make a replacement reasonable. I had planned on having the right eye lens set for distance with the idea that monovision would allow me to go without glasses completely. Fortunately Dr. Dacanay recommended a mid-range lens because doing what I proposed would have left me with a no man's land of poor clarity in the mid-range. So now I have a mid-range right eye that matches well with a close-up left eye and only need glasses for driving. An added, but unexpected benefit, is my right eye sees better than 20-20. The results I've had are outstanding. The pre-op prep was thorough. The procedure itself took about 15 minutes. There was zero pain at any time. The initial day after visit went perfectly as Dr. Dacanay verified that everything was in place as planned and eye pressure was normal. To say that I am thrilled is an understatement. read more

I went to see Dr. Decanay a couple times in the last few years and just remembered to leave him a review since I was looking for him for a friend. I went to my regular optometrist who normally does my annual eye exams when I had some irritation and swelling in my eyes that lasted more than a week. It was outside of his expertise so he referred me to Dr. Dacanay. I'm not sure how complicated my issues were but it was totally within Dr. Dacanay's expertise, he knew exactly what it was. He's very knowledgable, great communicator, and just a really cool guy. I went to see him a year or so later for another similar issue. Again, no problem. He did several tests to confirm what the problem was, prescribed some eye drops, and problem was gone in a couple days. Great to have someone with his knowledge and experience nearby. read more

I wish I found him 5 years ago! I've seen Dr. Dacanay for the past year and I could not express how great he is! Back in December 2016 I had a conjunctivitis right after I just moved to the Bay Area and I was desperate to see someone who can take an appointment ASAP. Fortunately the front office let me get the earliest appointment and Dr. Dacanay examined me. He took time to explain what is happening and how to deal with it. He even recommended to take pictures of my optic nerves to see if there is something to be concerned with or in case I come back in the future with similar concern. This year I came back because I had mild pink eye and again he explained to me in detail on my condition. He took time comparing my optic nerves picture from the past with the recent one and made sure I understand about what's going on with my eye. Dr. Dacanay sincerely cares for his patient and he communicates in a way that makes his patient feels reassured and comfortable. He also seems to remember something personal about his patients and it makes me appreciate him more as a doctor! I can't say enough good things about him and his staffs. I love Dr. Dacanay. He's pleasant and professional and he always remembers something personal about me that he asks about, even though I only see him once a year. His office is full of very shiny high-tech machines that look extremely expensive, which would be intimidating except that Dr. Dacanay and the folks who work with him are always happy to answer questions and explain what the shiny machines do. One of them takes super-high resolution photos of your retina, which is really cool (and the doctor will happily show them to you). My primary care doctor asked me recently what I thought of Dr. Dacanay. She said she was curious because every patient her office had referred to him absolutely adored him. LOVE Dr.Dacanay and his entire staff. Reception to where the magic happens. Everyone is AMAZING. Everything is clean and sanitary Definitely not your standard Opthemologist experience. Everyone is so warm and personable. I've been seeing them for a pretty long time and let me tell you, I usually go in with one baby on my back and one in a stroller. Sometimes I have to do field tests which can take about 10-15 minutes depending on my focus and they are always so patient with me and my babies. They are always so surprised at how well behaved a 18 and 8 month old could be, but they still have helped me if they see that I'm almost done and they're beginning to get impatient which they don't HAVE to do and have never once made me feel uncomfortable. EVER. And I appreciate that sooo much. I never let the kids run loose out of respect for the office, patients, and very expensive equipment obviously BUT never have they even batted an eye. As for Dr. Dacanay himself. He's amazing. He's not a regular Opthemologist, he's a cool Opthemologist. He genuinely cares about his patients and communicates clearly with doctors when needed. I came to Dr. Decanay in 2017 with a concern about a previous retinal tear. I found his name online and thus was not referred by a physician, yet he saw me immediately. I have been seeing him ever since. A few years ago I found I had something in my eye I couldn't get out and though I usually wait before calling a doctor, I decided to see if he could see me. He saw me right away and pulled a shard of glass from my eye. I have absolutely no idea how a shard of glass got there, but he took it out swiftly and wordlessly -- a real pro. Good grief, how I was absolutely dreading cataract surgery! But when it finally came down to the day, the operation turned out to be a real piece of cake. Whew. Dr. Dacanay gave me all the information I needed beforehand. Then I jumped on BART, got off at the MacArthur station, took the Summit shuttle to the surgery center on 30th Street in Oakland and from there they really took good care of me. The operation was quick, easy and (almost) fun -- because they gave me a nice relaxant too. And now here I am, the very next day, with 20/20 vision in my right eye. It's almost miraculous. You just gotta love Dr. Ducanay, his right-hand-woman Cara, and the whole surgery team. read more

All the eye doctors I've seen so far have been primarily interested in getting me in and out with a new set of frames. I want a doctor who can help me take care of my eyes. Kind and efficient receptionists. Pleasant waiting area, very short wait time to see Dr. Dacanay. I had to have two funky procedures on my right eye, opening tear ducts. Dr Dacanay made sure I experienced as little pain as possible, and was concerned I was comfortable as possible, when I asked for a breather, he told me to take as much time as I needed, and even offered to play some music. Hopefully I would never need to see Dr. Dacanay again - but I would recommend him in a second to anyone who needed to see an ophthalmologist. I was referred to Dr. Dacanay from Alta Bates after a fairly intense trauma to my eye. He took a look inside my eye and let me know I had a retinal tear. He booked an immediate (next day at 8am) appointment for me to see a retina specialist and get fixed. Not only was he efficient, but he was incredibly informative. He explained what had happened and the potential solutions. He referred me to the "best in the business", and helped me feel comfortable and knowledgeable about what needed to happen next. He checked in with me the next day, answering any follow up questions I had in regards to what to expect and pain management. I had a very comfortable experience getting my eyes checked from Dr Dacanay and staff. I was concerned with some eye symptoms and they were very accommodating and got me in right away, the same afternoon, in between appointments. Dr. Dacanay literally saved my life & my vision in 2009 when he was still a doctor in Everett, WA. I've been searching for him to thank him for a very long time. I just finished having outpatient surgery for removal of a growth from my inner eyelid. Dr Dacanay did an excellent job of prepping me for surgery, minimizing pain and dealing with the anxiety I was feeling. The surgery went smoothly and he explained what he was doing every step of the way. I can't believe I'm typing this an hour after the surgery, but I feel great and the eye looks much better. He has a great chair side manner, uses electronic medical records and is up to date on the latest technologies and procedures.
